Description

You don't like them.

They're not like you.

Are you one of those people?

Until Darren and Jodie move in, Lowland Way is a suburban paradise. Beautiful homes. Friendly neighbours. Kids playing out in the street. But Darren and Jodie don't follow the rules and soon disputes over loud music and parking rights escalate all too quickly to public rows and threats of violence.

Then, early one Saturday, a horrific crime shocks the street. As the police go house-to-house, the residents close ranks and everyone’s story is the same: They did it.

But there’s a problem. The police don't agree.

And the door they're knocking on next is yours.

You don't like them.

They're not like you.

One thing about moving house is always will the neighbours be ok! This is a compelling story about what happens when new neighbours become the absolute nightmare! Brilliantly written, lots of twists I didn’t see coming. Loved it. Thank you for letting me review this book. Another brilliant book for Louise Candliah whose writing gets better each time.

Instantly you feel fully immersed in Lowland Way and can grasp the sense of it’s community and what it could be like to live there. Until Darren moves in. From here, the neighbourhood takes a turn and suddenly things don’t feel all that rosy anymore.

You really begin to get to know how each couple living at each address are implicated in this. From the onset there are excepts from police house-to-house enquiries with a countdown to the event they are being interviewed about. This constantly gave me something to hold onto and I could feel myself wanting to read quicker and quicker as we got closer to this tragic event.

In each chapter, which follows a different character, you begin to suspect the motives for each individual and wonder how they could be implicated in the upcoming events. Once we reached the end of the countdown, I was surprised to find myself only halfway through the book! But then started the gripping investigations to uncover what really went on.

I never at all warmed to Darren, but in a way this is likely due to not seeing things from his side of the story. This distance gave me mixed feelings about him, but then when the book took a shocking turn, I couldn’t help but question all my previous perspectives!!

I found the writing brilliantly complimented the events as the reader began to get a sense of how Lowland Way was changing, and the impact this had on other residents. We then began to scratch underneath the surface of some characters revealing their true colours and vulnerabilities.

The ending at first had me confused as it was a link I hadn’t picked up on, but when I got it I was shocked! All the loose ends were tied up so I wasn’t left feeling frustrated either. A very enjoyable read, and certainly one for those that were fans of Our House!

Reading this has definitely confirmed that Louise Candlish is added to my list of five star authors! This has certainly proved to be a brilliant read and receive a five star review from me on Goodreads.

I'm a big fan of Louise Candlish, her books always keep guessing and wondering if my own, ever changing, theories are going to be correct. I enjoy a book with some well time twists and turns so Louise ticks a lot of boxes for me and Those People doesn't disappoint.
I will be the first to admit SOME of the characters were really unlikable... but intentionally so. A neighbourhood is made up of all types of people and so it was easy to see the characters who were a nightmare in their own right - self obsessed, snobs who looked down on anyone else no matter what; I think this was a good move - I for one was hoping they would get their comeuppance in any way never mind before the introduction of "the neighbours from hell."
When Darren and Jodie move onto Lowland Way, you get a pretty good picture of how hellish it would be for the long serving residents. It was very well written and I know I would have hated to be kept up all night with loud music etc. I think anyone would be unhappy about unsafe work taking place and fear an accident so I don't think any residents were wrong in being unhappy - perhaps they didn't necessarily go about things in the right way all the time.
I think this book is very typical of Louise's style - I was kept guessing and doubted my own theories of who had been involved. I could totally understand why many of the characters could be guilty. It does go 'round the houses' a little, I was willing it on at some points but it didn't take anything from my enjoyment overall.
I read it in one sitting, I am a fast reader anyway but I was gripped and I didn't want to put it down.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

As someone who missed the furore over Louise's previous book Our House (I will be reading it now I’ve read this one!), I was excited to read this one & see whether it grabbed me as much as Our House did for others. I wasn’t disappointed!

Each chapter is from a different neighbour's point of view, & you learn a lot about all of the inter-relationships & tensions going on throughout the street. Personally I immediately took against most of the neighbours, but as the story unfolded I found that my initial reactions were actually perhaps in relation to the wrong people, I didn’t figure out who was responsible for what happens & had a completely different theory for most of the second half of the book, so it was quite nice to have it completely wrong & be a surprise.

I read this in almost one sitting because I had to know what was going to happen next, and I think that’s really all you need to know!

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book is written in a very clever way from the start to keep you reading to get into the story to find out what happens. It is quite thought provoking for those of us who have difficult neighbours and the interactions that take place when faced with this situation. I have enjoyed this book and will be recommending to friends. Thank you to the publisher for the opportunity to read.

Devilishly good, Those People is sublime for its take on middle class house price snobbery. Absolutely loved this book - clever, deliciously dark and I loved the ominous ending.
