A psychological thriller which examines the lengths family will go to to protect their own and how lies can affect you even decades onwards. Cass Green is not an author I know, but I’ll definitely be reading more of her work. A thought-provoking novel which will haunt me for some time to come.

This was a brilliant read! I really enjoy Cass Green as an author, I love the twisted domestic noir scenario where everyone has their secrets. Quite a quick read, or maybe it's just because I couldn't put it down!
Some absolutely horrible characters and some parts of the story are really sad. My heart broke for Irene, I really felt for her with all her family traumas. I wouldn't call this a thriller as such, more a study in family relationships with some dark twisted goings on. I really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it.

A slowly and carefully built suspense that reminded me of Ruth Rendell (who will forever be the queen os suspense for me).
Cass Green has a unique style; the stories are presented step by step, in a way that you keep waiting to see what will spook you. And then everything connects and all you thought you knew is not really what it seemed.
The pace is steady, the characters are greatly built, the dialogue is impeccable, and there are lots of twists. Another excellent read by this author.

I'd like to thank the Publisher who offered me access to this ARC through NetGalley, in exchange for my honest review.

How far would you go to protect your child?

Elliott and Anya have moved out of London and are hoping for a baby. Both of them are hiding secrets and one day their lives begin to unravel. But who is telling the truth? and what is the real story even if is beyond belief.

This will have you hooked from the beginning to the last explosive page.

On the face of it Elliot, a primary school teacher , his wife Anya, well paid job in London, are a happily married couple.
Though from different backgrounds they are in love, but is that enough?
Elliot has always been a little in awe of Anya and her parents, she runs to them whenever she has a problem that needs sorting, leaving Elliot feeling left out.
When her current problem is finally exposed he will be wishing he was left out.
This is a dark psychological thriller, where the tension builds slowly drawing you in.
Evil can only be hidden for so long!
A brilliant read from what is a new author to me, I shall certainly be reading her other books.
Thanks to Netgalley and Harper Collins for the chance to read this as an ARC.

This was a totally gripping read which I raced through; it’s the pretty addictive story of happily married couple Elliot and Anya. The couple come from very different backgrounds and Elliot constantly feels that he is not good enough for the more privileged Anya who is adored by her parents. Elliot’s upbringing was tough and he has some secrets he would really prefer stayed hidden. In his eyes and those of her parents’ Anya is perfect and can do no wrong. If you are beginning to smell a rat, you may well be on to something.

The narrative moves between 2003, 2018, 2019 and 2021 and it is told from the viewpoint of Elliot and another character: Irene. Irene’s search for her missing sons bring her into contact with both Anya and Elliot and secrets and lies, that not only Elliot is trying to keep concealed, begin to emerge. Elliot starts to realise that although he loves Anya unreservedly, he may not know her as well as he thought he did. He would do anything for her but maybe that will not be enough.

The novel is very well plotted and the characters are cleverly drawn. I especially liked Irene, a gentle soul who is drawn into events way beyond her experience. The writing is incisive and the ending, well I can’t say ….

Thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended.

Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Fiction for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Elliot, Anya and Irene are the main charters and very different people although Elliott and Anya are married she a high flyer in London and he is a primary school teacher a job he loves. Irene is Mum to Michael and Liam, liam disappeared in 2003 and had not been seen or heard from since He had been dating Anya but all has now moved on a decade or so.
Anya has strong loving people around her specially her Mum and Dad often putting them above Elliott she seems to have it all Elliot certainly didn't have it all growing up but you need you read this great book to find out more of his story. The characters are believable and generally quite likeable apart from one of them but it would it cruel to tell you, so I leave you to discover that for yourself.
I like the way that Cass makes the characters real with real things happening behind the main story that show how confusing life can be and how easy it is to jump to conclusions like most of us do. Well I hold my hands up and say I do at times often to either mine or my loved ones embarrassment, not that you wanted to know that so I won't charge for the info.
I really enjoyed this book it kept my attention and had plenty of twisted and the end you probably won't see coming but I won't jump to any conclusion about you there, but it is true to say that I didn't see it coming. It is definitely a five star 🌟 read and if your wanting to relax and escape from real life then this is a good book to have, it will also make your issues or problems take a back burner for a while or I hope it does.

I enjoyed this book as it 'kept me on my toes'. It was a book where I was annoyed that I had to do other things like go to work or make tea as I was enjoying reading it. I enjoyed the relationship between the two main characters and how their secrets both influenced them as a adults and how they unfolded into the present. The ending I wasn't expecting so that came as a surprise!

A very dark psychological thriller which I loved. Anya and Elliot are happily married, they are both from totally different backgrounds but are in love so that's enough. Anya's parents adore Elliot but he still feels left out when Anya always runs back to them when she encounters problems and they always sort it out for her but some of the problems just can't be sorted. Elliot also has his fair share of worry and anxiety when he makes an enemy of one of the dads at the school where he teaches. The story is very complexed but easy to follow, it is told over different time periods and it soon becomes obvious that someone isn't telling the truth. !!!

I loved this book, so much so that I read it in under a day as I couldn't put it down. I was instantly gripped and couldn't stop reading until I found out how it ended. I loved the way it was written from different narratives and found that this flowed easily unlike other books with multiple narratives which can sometime be difficult to keep track of. As the story is building you are left feeling unsure as to what the truth is and then when you realise - fabulous! There was definitely some surprises in there and something that I thought was a foregone conclusion turned out not to be! Brilliant read
