Fairy Tales for Fearless Girls

Anything that proclaims and fortifies female empowerment i will always be down with. I absolutely LOVED this anthology.

I love this! I will be buying this for my sort-of-niece! The art is gorgeous, the stories are engaging and have a great theme of princesses and warriors as strong protagonists, rather than the damsels in distress. I know that sounds run of the mill and like every sort of "give them a pink sword, now THEY'RE the heroes!" sort of book for girls that has come out since I was a kid in the 90s, but this book is genuinely quite well thought out and represents different cultures and different aspects of what it means to be a girl in the world. And I really cannot stress enough how gorgeous the illustrations are!!

These heroines don't sit around waiting for a prince or a Jack to save them; they get on with things themselves, using wit, strength and bravery to overcome obstacles and save the day. These are lesser known stories; I read a lot of folk tales, and I was only familiar with one of these. (Mollie Whuppie, if you're curious.) The illustrations are fantastic and add exactly the right tone. This is a lovely collection and will be very popular.

Fairy Tales for Fearless Girls is exactly the kind of book I wish I had when I was younger, a collection of stories of girls being clever, honest, resourceful, brave, happy, courageous adventurous from all parts of the world. But most of all fearless and true to themselves. The stories were nicely complemented with the beautiful drawings depicting these amazing, fearless girls. Sincerely I want a few several copies to pass on to some of my friend's children and one just for me to own.

I love fairy tales, mixed up fairy tales, mythical fairytales, and so this title appealed to me in so many ways.
We talk a lot about girl power and being true to who you are as a woman but our old favourites still paint women as the weaker sex, the ones who must sit and wait for the prince to come rescue them.
In the authors introduction, she explains that this is not that type of book- this is about women who are fierce, determined and active in changing their lives and the world around them.  More often than not, they are braver, stronger and more powerful than the men in their stories.  
They are all truly excellent and I devoured them.  They were well written, short but intense and I enjoyed the differences between cultures.
I highly recommend anyone with a daughter to get this book and share it frequently.  
I will be buying this title for my school as I think it will fly off the shelves....girls are looking for more from their heroines now and this book gives them more!
