September, 1967

After twenty-seven years with the FBI, Assistant Special Agent, James Riley, has officially retired. Finally out of the crazy and unpredictable world of law enforcement, he and his wife, Meg, are excited to start the next chapter of their lives in the small town of Monrovia, California.

Meg throws James a surprise retirement party that brings their daughter, Clair, and her husband Tom, home from Ohio and reunites James with his old friend Bob Maywood. When Clair announces that she and Tom will be moving back to Monrovia, James and Meg are thrilled. However, their excitement turns to terror when Clair and Tom fail to return from a short walk. A search of the neighborhood leads James and Bob to an abandoned house, where they find Clair’s opal and diamond necklace and a chloroform-soaked rag.

James and Bob team up with his former supervisor, Special Agent Hank Welch, to find Clair and Tom. They will soon find themselves caught in a web of lies, revenge, and deception that threatens the Riley family and friends.

I enjoyed this novel. Light read with interesting characters. I did not feel a sense of imminent threat from the somewhat inept criminals, but was surprised at the ending.

Not a bad story - but quite a terse read. It all happens very quickly, with no spare words - ideal if you want to get to the end, but a little more character fleshing out would have been nice.

”Hand across the Grave” was a great read! After the first chapter, I knew it was going to get good! James Riley is retiring after being with the FBI for twenty-seven years, his wife planned a surprise party. His daughter Clair and her husband come across country to be at the party, and announce they plan on moving back. The celebration is short lived when Claire and her husband go missing during their walk. The retirement is short lived at least until James can get his daughter back. It was well written and had some unexpected twist!

This is 1000% what a who done it should be. There is a multigenerational cast of characters, with back story enough to suspect them all. How can a retiree have his house busted into after his daughter and husband go missing, and he happen to be gone? There is so much to this story, I read it in a single sitting. I couldn't put it down. You won't be able to either. Put on your sleuthing cap, and give this book a read.
