Description

THE TRUE STORY OF THE FIRST NHS BABY Hold On, Edna! is a nostalgic tale of community spirit, hardship and family ties, culminating in the greatest change to ordinary working families in modern history. The birth of the National Health Service – the UK’s greatest asset – coincided with the birth of one little girl in South Wales, Aneira ‘Nye’ Thomas, the first baby to be delivered by the NHS. Born one minute past midnight, the midwives told Nye’s mother to ‘Hold on, Edna!’ – aware Nye’s mother would have to pay for the birth if it happened before the clock hit the hour mark. Nye’s story follows generations of her family who battled to survive before the NHS was launched, through to those who went on to dedicate their lives to working for the NHS – and also, ultimately, to be saved by it. An extraordinary, heart-breaking, and yet uplifting testament to a time not so long ago when the value of your life came down to how much you had in your pocket. A timely tribute to the NHS and ordinary British working-class families. Perfect for fans of Call the Midwife and the Lovely Lane series (Sunday Times bestseller). Aneira has given numerous interviews, several coinciding with the 70th birthday of the NHS in 2018, with the BBC, Lorraine Kelly, and the Guardian.

I found this highly interesting and eye opening about how much conditions have improved and how grateful we should be for the NHS. I also had an extra surprise at the beginning as I live locally to wells and godney so was of extra importance knowing details about the past of the local area. It is really well written and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

An excellent tribute to the NHS,
Hold on Edna was the call given so that the birth of a little Welsh girl was paid for by the National Health service.
The launch of the NHS was the most positive move towards a civilised and dignifying advancement in health for all.
Anerira has delved into the past to understand the difference it would have made to her ancestors. Families were in fear of having an infant with a cough or a injured wage earner that meant they could not work meaning no spare pennies or shillings for the Doctors help. . So many new born babies died from diseases and dirty conditions now in the past,.
Most new mothers are now delivered safely , many injuries incurred through everyday living and basic health issues are now dealt with by our excellent services that are free. The support showed and given by the family, many of who have worked in the health service is written with pride and respect by this first NHS baby.

This is the true story of the first NHS baby. We are in South Wales on the night before, when patients still had to pay to be medically treated. Edna was in labour. In fact, Edna's baby was about to be born and it was fast approaching midnight. If Edna would "hold on" formanother minute she wouldn't need to pay and the Midwifes were encouraging her to do this. The story then goes on to tell us about four generations of Nye's family who had battled to survive before the NHS was launched.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's interesting and informative. It sickens me to think that people could o ly be treated if they had money in their pocket to pay for it. We are lucky to have the NHS.

I would like to thank NetGalley Mirror Books and the author Aneira Thomas for my ARC in exchange for an honest review .

This is a brilliant piece of social history with real life stories woven into it, which makes for an enthralling read. Detailing life for the poorer generation in particular- think the workhouse- and the difference brought about by the introduction of the NHS. The title refers to the birth of the author and the birth of the NHS. Informative and a great read. Thank goodness for our NHS!
