Description

When twenty-nine-year-old Scarlett Vantassel comes to the conclusion that her life doesn’t resemble any of the things she actually wanted for herself, she drops out of school and moves back home, attempting to reconnect with the people she left behind. But a shadow falls over her return one early October morning when a sinister house miraculously appears in the center of the city, sparking a media frenzy that attracts attention nationwide.

Soon after the newspapers label it, "The House that Fell from the Sky," Scarlett’s childhood friend Hannah becomes obsessed with the idea that the house holds the key to discovering whether there really is life after death. Undeterred by her friends' numerous warnings, Hannah becomes increasingly consumed with the desire to enter the house, convinced it would allow her to reconnect with her recently deceased mother.

Despite a series of escalating events suggesting that the house may be more dangerous than anyone ever thought possible, a privately owned company seizes control of the property and hosts a lottery to lure the city’s residents, promising the winners a large cash reward if they dare to enter the house.

To Scarlett’s horror, Hannah uses her vast wealth to secure a spot among the winners to gain access to the house. Now, it’s up to Scarlett, her older brother Tommy, and her friend Jackson to face their fears and journey into a place where nothing is ever quite as it seems, and decide if they can help a friend in need, or if Hannah truly is lost.

When twenty-nine-year-old Scarlett Vantassel comes to the conclusion that her life doesn’t resemble any of the things she actually wanted for herself, she drops out of school and moves back home...

"Our very own Hill House right smack-dab in the middle of the city."

This is one house of ungodly horrors no one would ever wish to enter, not even those with a passion for jump scares and love for those creepy, unnatural creatures that would send any sane person running. "The House that Fell from the Sky" takes the topper for the most wickedly terrifying and deranged haunted house of horrors!

The story follows four friends whose lives didn't turn out the way they hoped, leaving them stuck and hopeless for a better future. Hannah, who's shut herself up in her family home as she loses herself to grief over the loss of her mother. Tommy, a man destined for an amazing sports career until an accident that changes his life. Jackson, a failure in the eyes of his father for not taking a "successful" path in life. And finally, Scarlett, who struggles from a recent breakup and a lack of creativity as the most popular horror reviewer on YouTube.

When a house falls from the sky, it gains immediate popularity worldwide. Hannah becomes one of many who becomes obsessed with where the house came from and why it's there. She begins to convince herself it holds the key to reuniting her with her mother and whether there is life after death. When Hannah jumps on the first chance to get inside the house, her friends follow, because no one ever lets their friend enter a spooky and potentially life-threatening house alone.

This is a story guaranteed to have readers on edge, gritting their teeth through one ghastly horror after another as the four friends journey inside a house they may not come out of. Delaney is superb with his creation of equally entertaining, witty, and complex characters who are all having a rough go at life whom readers will be able to connect with. While most horror stories lack a pliable reason for characters doing the insane and setting themselves up for an event they may not live through, Delaney's characters are so uniquely their own that their decision to enter a house that unsettles them all seems completely rationable.

The house itself is a wonderful, enticing mix of supernatural and psychological horror that makes it clear this is not the kind of house anyone should mess with. I'd love to say more, but this is definitely a novel where the reader has to enter the house themselves.

This book is, in my opinion, more scifi than horror, sometimes difficult to follow, but still hard to put down. The writing style is very good..

I enjoyed this very much. It was well written. Pacy. Good characterisation.

What do you do when a house falls from the sky? Apparently you want to go inside and this house is not heavenly, believe me!

Spooky, atmospheric, a real page turner!
Definitely one to get!

This book is like a fever dream, weaving between different characters, timelines, and personalities. You begin to wonder just what you’ve entered and what will become, but you will not leave disappointed.

I absolutely loved this almost perfect book! This was a page-turner!

I was hooked from the very first page. The whole first chapter was extremely foreboding. This is the type of book that you sit down to read and realize you are in for a treat. I stopped after the first page and fought against looking up the author because I couldn't stop thinking "Who is this guy? What else has he done? Where did he come from all of a sudden?" Now, anything Patrick writes is going to be on my to-read list.

The story is that upon returning to her hometown after her relationship ends, a house falls from the sky and lands on one of the random city streets. It is a large, black gothic mansion and is referred to as a haunted house. From the get-go you realize that the house has powers to supercharge people's emotions and fill them with dread, fear, and anger and that it preys on people's weaknesses. A lottery chances that Scarlett and her friends spend one night in the house in order to win a million dollars but truthfully they do it because one of her friends believes that her deceased mother is inside. It's part rescue mission, part Lovecraftian nightmare.

Remember years ago when everyone was into House of Leaves? "Oooo a staircase. Oooo a door." How spooky. This is so much better in really giving you a house to be afraid of. Scarlett encounters numerous monsters and situations that result in her death. Everytime she dies, she awakes back in the foyer of the house and a new nightmare begins. Some of the rooms filled me, someone reading safe in my own bed, with a sense of endless horror.

Now, as I pointed out from the get-go, this is not equivocally perfect for me. Some of the characters, especially when there are four or five together, fade completely out of a scene. They may have one line of dialogue just to remind us that they are there. The mystery of what the house is...who the mysterious godlike being is...is almost fully explained but not quite. There's the mysterious Crow Organization whose name I hate and whose ultimately fizzle out to non-importance. They are the ones who hold the lottery, after securing the rights to the house...and it's said towards the end that they must have been in the house once before but we don't know why or when or what for. It's almost like there's an entire other book that's missing here or yet to be written. I WANT A SEQUEL!

One other major plot point I don't like is the part about the Magician. In the beginning he seems to be a bigger character, possibly evil and having something to do with the house. He invites Scarlett to the house when only Tommy and Hannah were going to be there, and even secured a ticket for Jackson. The Crow Organization leader wasn't surprised to see him there. Why not? At the end it turns out that the children saved him years ago from a car wreck, and he feels indebted to their safety, but if that is the case then why did he think it was safe to bring Scarlett and Jackson to the house where they could possibly lose their lives? The motive doesn't add up. As well, his speech at the end about them being his true friends...it didn't work for me. I loved his character, but something was off.

Then finally, Jackson tells Scarlett he will always be there for her...but that he's also leaving town.

I demand a sequel! Lets have a return to the house as a rescue mission!!

Rose Red meets Haunting at Hill House. One October night a house appears in the town where Scarlett, Tommy, Hanna and Jackson live. It’s just not any house, it’s a horrifying house, a house where nightmares live. As these four friends are dealing with the failures in their own lives they are given a chance to spend the night in the “most haunted of houses”.

This book will have you on the edge of your seat, holding your breath and waiting for the nightmares to end.

Wow wow wow!!! Absolutely devoured this book. I actualy had to stop a few times. Not because I wasnt enjoying it, but because it was so creepy it started to freak me out!! Haha. Amazing story and I highly recommend it. I didnt cry honest! 😂

Firstly, I would like to thank Netgalley and Oblivion for providing me a copy of this book for an honest review. Secondly, holy hell is this book a trip.

If you enjoy exploring haunted houses, avoid this one because you may never leave. The characters are relatable and motives are clearly defined. The Lovecraftian elements are very clear, and I was proud of myself for thinking it. That is, until the characters started talking about how different haunts seemed to be from a Lovecraft novel. Much less proud after that.

Something Delaney did extremely well were the interactions between the four friends. Scarlett, our heroine, is 29 and after a tough breakup has returned home. Reunited with her family and friends, you’d think everything would be great but this isn’t a story about unicorns and rainbows. Next you’ve got Hannah and Tommy, the couple. Things haven’t been so great since Hannah’s mom died and with the appearance/temptation of the house it’s only getting worse. Lastly we’ve got the lovable Jackson. Jackson is just coasting through life, with no real direction other than moving out of his house with his father. With this cast of friends, what could go wrong?

This book was a trip from start to finish and never slowed. Gruesome at times, heart wrenching at times, and frightening at times, The House that Fell from the Sky is sure to leave the reader wanting more.

Wow.

My first note for this story was simply 'hooked'. It's been a long time since I've picked up a book with the barest blurb, without knowing the author and loved it so completely. It's even a genre I rarely read, having exhausted my appetite for horror and haunted houses in movies. But this was something else.

Scarlett Vantassel, horror vlogger extraordinaire, is granted the opportunity of a lifetime; a chance to enter the house that fell from the sky, a mysterious castle-like mansion that quite literally appeared out of thin air one night in the sleepy town of Winterview. Others have entered the house and either killed themselves or gone insane. A normal person wouldn't go. A sane person wouldn't bring along their brother, two friends and the world famous town magician. Hooked, right?

It was amazingly graphic in it's description of the house and it's interior. Several times I found my heart racing or a cold chill running down my spine. One of the wonders of the house was its ability to reanimate of sorts. Without giving too much away, I thought I was entering the Overlook Hotel, surrounded by The Thing, whilst experiencing the Event Horizon. Hooked, right?

Throughout the story there are several flashbacks detailing the characters lives and relationships. At first I thought they were meaningless, meant only to ease the nausea caused by the house but after a while I found them endearing. If you are finding the start a bit slow please keep going. I promise it picks up.

There were some flaws. It did take more than half the book to get anywhere near the house, let alone enter it but by the time they did go in I felt like I knew them all. Each character was well fleshed out and those few chapters of development made me care for them and their fate. It only made the ending more sad.

The ending was what I was expecting and more. I loved it.

I mostly liked this book. Scarlett is a sympathetic character. She’s a troubled person, who maybe isn’t making the best choices in life, but she seems redeemable and likable. I also enjoyed the dynamic between Scarlett and the other characters. Especially between her and her father, but all the characters were the sort of people I’d love to hang out with. Maybe just to creepily listen to their banter.

For me, the biggest drawback to the novel, was how it was written with a lot of telling and not enough showing. Stories feel more alive for me when I’m allowed to visualize some things myself. I ended up getting distracted trying to keep track of all the descriptions that were thrown at me in every scene.

This book takes the reader on a Horror and suspense adventure that leans more heavily into what we don’t see than what we do.

What I liked

1. The main character is far from perfect while still being someone I can hope is successful.

2. There is a sense of the unknown being more dangerous than our imagined origins for the mystery.

What I disliked

1. The pacing especially near the end feels all kinds of wonky.

2. As a reader I feel like I didn’t get the payoff of answers I’d hoped for. ( this isn’t my normal genre to read so if that’s a genre convention I’m missing it makes sense)

Who I would recommend this book for : This book would be a good read for those who liked books by writers like Stephen king and want to expand their experience of the horror and suspense genres.

Please note this is a 3.5.

This book has a lot of positives, but it does take a long time to get started. I absolutely loved the Lovecraftian horror that feeds through this book, with some marvellous eldritch descriptions and twisted concepts that give an incredibly punchy sense of darkness. The story was fantastic, and there are a lot of threads that are picked up and put together to form a sense of mystery and suspense that culminate in some absolutely delicious twists.

However, it did have some drawbacks. The characterisation leaves a bit to be desired, and I was a little disappointed that I didn't connect with especially the main character as well as I could have. A little bit more humanisation would go a long way to making them just that little bit easier to understand and appreciate. With that being said, the ending was incredible, and it carried with it a sense of unease that is sure to leave even the most horror-keen reader uneasy.

The characters in the book are all very likable and interesting. I found the house to be extremely scary and while the book was enjoyable, I wanted more. I felt like a lot of the time spent on the main characters leading up to their time in the house could have been used for more story about the house. I'm dying to know about the house and why/how it was made and how it became what it became.

That being said, The House that Fell from the Sky was interesting and I will recommend it to readers looking for a horror novel.

I will also be mentioning this book on an up coming episode of my podcast, Genre Junkies.

This was my first title from this author. I was immediately intrigued by the book’s cover and description. I definitely enjoyed the elements of Lovecraftian/Cosmic horror. I think that the author has a firm grasp on the sub genre. He can also write some really poignant storylines and great horror imagery. I was also happy with how Delaney made the niche his own. I didn’t feel like I reading recycled cosmic horror tropes. I applaud him for tacking such an intense and beloved sub genre. Delaney also throws in lots of “Easter eggs” for us hardcore horror fans. He respects and loves horror and it’s audience.

As a female review, I am very cautious of male authors writing female leads. Us women readers can usually tell when a man wrote the female voice. Though Delaney was not the worst example I’ve seen of this (not by far) it was still obvious and irksome. Not too mention the male characters would “describe” the girls in ways we are all really sick of hearing. The women characters who “don’t know how beautiful they are”, “don’t need makeup to be gorgeous” or basically, “aren’t like the other girls”. Both leading ladies in the book fit these tired stereotypes. I hope the author’s future works with female protagonists benefit from some women beta readers and looking at ways to circumvent the tropes.

Okay, here is what I liked so much about this story:

1) Haunting, mysterious, dilapidated, claustrophobic, gothic, dark house theme with H. P. Lovecraft vibes

2) Intriguing world building and promising theme: Haunting of Hill House meets Stranger Things/Goonies theme

3) Marvelous and brilliant cover: I’m truly hypnotized with creative illustration work.

I was so excited to start this story and learn more about 4 troubled teenagers’ adventure at this surprising, horrifying place with so many surprises.

It was a great story with teenagers who are not so pleased with the hand life dealt them. Hannah suffers from the loss of her mother and she became obsessed with the haunted house because in her opinion this place may be portal for her to reunite with the spirit of her mother. On the other hand Tommy was devastated because his sporting career is over after the unexpected accident ruined his dreams and future plans. Jackson deals with his perfectionist and unsatisfied dad and their problematic relationship. Finally we’re introduced with Scarlett who may have achieved something difficult and became the worst Youtube star. (Maybe she should stop commenting about horrific things!)

I loved the premise and terrifying house theme but I couldn’t connect with the characters and I didn’t enjoy their childish, illogical, boring dialogues. Mostly they were a little under developed and lack of emotional layers ruin their characteristics and turned them into whining spoiled children. But that was just my opinion.

Overall: A great plotline and promising start with not so likable characterization and dialogues. I still want to read more books of the author because he can find really good stories and gripping, high tension atmosphere built around the story also hooked me from the beginning.

I decided to give my solid 3 stars. I still find so many things enjoyable about the book but I unfortunately hated the guts of the characters.

And after writing this review, my NetGalley library is going to be empty for the first time. Yes, you may hear my ugly cries and screaming right now!

Special thanks to NetGalley and Oblivion Publishing from sharing this intriguing ARC with me in exchange my honest review.

Thanks Netgalley for the ARC.

The house that fell from the sky takes place in a city called winterview. One day a an ominous house appearance from no where. The house has awful effects on anyone whe gets near it, particularly if they manage to get inside. The story centres around friends Scarlet, Tommy, Jackson and Hannah depicting the events which lead to them entering the house and the challenges they face inside.

The part leading up to the characters entering the house is quite lengthy but i think that this is necessary as it helps to build the characters and helps the reader to understand each characters individual perspective.

I really liked the characters especially Scarlett and my heart went out to Jackson throut the book.

The descriptions and scene setting are really detailed its really easy to visualise what the author is trying to portray.

This book keeps you hanging through twists and turns that you wont see coming. Overall i really enjoyed reading this book.

While this book took a while to get to the plot, once it did, I couldn’t put it down.
The writing creates a constant, on the edge of your seat anxiety, and a palatable sense of dread.

“Hannah grimaced, clearing her throat. “Afraid?”
“They should be.” She took another step forward, close enough to touch the girl. “Of what?”
“The house, silly.” She laughed, coughing up a demonic giggle from her drowned throat. “It’s alive, and it likes to play.”

Big fat nope to that, scariest line I’ve read in a while.

I do have some grievances with this book. The characters are all supposed to be in their late 30’s, and they all felt younger than myself and my friend group- all of whom are 25 and younger. Scarlett, our main character, is so very “I’m average but not beautiful even though everyone would disagree with this- also I’m not at all like other girls, I am funny.” It got annoying really quickly. I don’t know any almost 30 year old woman who thinks wearing converse instead of heels is a personality trait, which brings me back to: Scarlett cannot possibly be 29 based on how she is written.

I wish we had had more time in the house and more time after the fact, rather than the relatively drawn out build up to the entrance into the house. While some of it I can see as important to the storyline within the house, a lot of it was redundant subplot and it took me a while to get interested into the story due to that. I would have liked to know more about Vincent, the magician, and less about Tommy and Jackson, honestly.

All in all, the horror in this book is what really sold it for me, and it delivered well

The House that Fell from the Sky is a striking combination of supernatural and psychological horror that will have you turning the pages, trying to delve deeper into Delany’s novel as fast as you can.

Reminiscent of Stephen King and Joe Hill novels, Delaney takes a chance with this story, literally having a large, gothic mansion fall from the sky into the middle of a small town street. Four friends, with a mixed history, immediately develop deep and different connections to this wildly terrifying and intriguing house - one that drives people to commit suicide by stepping near its doors, and causes others to leave in catatonic states.

The stakes are raised when a lottery is formed, daring 3 people to spend the night in the house - earning them one million dollars each if they last until sunrise.

I will leave you there, reader, as you need to experience The House that Fell from the Sky on your own as my words do not do as good of a job as Delany’s at painting the horrors that come with it.

Patrick Delaney immerses you in the story through his detailed descriptions. I was captivated then terrified by the house that fell from the sky. If you think it's bad then wait till you get inside!
Captivating read, couldn't put it down!

Note: Netgalley provided me with an ARC of this delightfully scary work.

It’s difficult to write a review of this book without potentially providing spoilers & it’s best to go in without any clue of what is going to happen in this house of horrors... Just like the characters do! It’s a tense, exciting, atmospheric thriller & I would absolutely recommend it to horror fans looking for something original.

I really enjoyed this book. This is about Scarlett, her brother Tommy, Tommy's girlfriend, Hannah and Jackson, their friend. One night, a house fell from the sky into the center of their town. No one knows where it came from and there is an odd mist that surrounds it and it is enormous in size. A company buys the property and then holds a lottery for all the residents. If they are chosen, they can spend from sundown to sunup to win a million dollars. Hannah is chosen and brings Tommy. Scarlett and Jackson are invited by a has-been magician from the town to be his guests. What happens between sundown and sunup defies explanation. I felt this was reminiscent of House of Leaves, which I really enjoyed.
I would highly recommend this book!

Thank you to NetGalley and Oblivion Publishing for allowing me to read an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. The House that Fell from the Sky by Patrick Delaney is a story about mystery, friendship, love, loss, finding oneself, and living your best life no matter what. It's also obviously about a mysterious house that randomly appeared in a dying town one October night. The tale centers around "Sinister" Scarlett, a YouTube vlogger who is a popular horror reviewer with hundreds of thousands of followers.. She has returned home after being away at college for a couple of years. She, her brother Tommy, his girlfriend Hannah, and a bartender named Jackson have been friends forever. After an evening celebrating Scarlett's birthday, everything changed when the house literally appeared on Seventh Street. Naturally the house makes the international news and the police and military show up to investigate. The few who have managed to enter the house have gone insane or committed suicide. The Crow Corp. somehow takes control of the property and holds a lottery to allow people to enter the house. Hannah wins a ticket and somehow all of the friends are allowed to enter the house together. The inside of the house is like something straight out of a Lovecraft story complete with creatures with tentacles. The house is definitely no ordinary house and the events that happen inside it are definitely extraordinary and horrific.
Overall, I really liked this book. Patrick Delaney is an excellent storyteller. I felt like Scarlett and I could be best friends in real life. I definitely connected with her story. Delaney uses a lot of imagery so I could actually visualize the house in my mind. If anything, there was almost too much description of the house that it became a bit too much to where the story started to get bogged down with it, but ultimately it helped with the creepy vibes of the house. I rate this a 4.5/5, but since that isn't an option here, I'm going to round up to a full 5 stars just because Delaney is an excellent wordsmith and I really liked Scarlett as a character.

The House that fell from the sky made a HUGE impression on me. I can say without a doubt it will be part of my 10 favorite books of the year.

The mood of the story is set pretty quickly : dark, eerie and slightly paranormal. That odd creepy mood stays consistent during the whole book, and I absolutely loved it. The tension never truly goes away, and what a pleasure that is !

I need to point out how clever that book is. The installation of the plot, with the whole media circus around the mysterious house that fell from the sky is captivating, and provides a great way to introduce how the event is perceived by each of the characters that will have some importance in the story.
In a way, that book reminded me of Dark Matter, because once the characters get inside the house, they are on unfamiliar ground, need to start comprehending things that are way beyond their current comprehension of the world and need to piece fragments of their minds together to keep their sanity and understand the events going on.

I loved reading about characters that are over 25, are somewhat mature, yet still have flaws and weaknesses. The characters are 70% of what makes that book great. We have a small group of friends, who have known each other for years, and have gone through much before the current events. They have such a strong bond, such a deep history between them ! That is definitely what makes characters more realistic, more likeable, more EVERYTHING for me.

Hannah does stand out from the others. She is that shy-ish girl, that mostly keeps to herself after having dealt with her mother's death, and her best friend Scarlett leaving their hometown to go to college with her boyfriend. You know instantly Hannah is different from her friends, and from time to time, we get some insight of the way she acts when there's no one around, of the way her brain works. Those moments were really interesting to me, and they highlight the house-related events all the more. Hannah's brilliant.

More than the creepy exciting story, more than the characters, more than Hannah, what drew me the most in The House that Fell from the Sky is the author's writing. I've become quite picky when it comes to reading lately, but the writing here sucked me in immediately, and I must admit I became a little addicted to that story. I never knew where the story was going, and kept being surprised as I read on. There's no better green flag for a book ! Until the very end, I had absolutely no idea what would happen.

This is a perfect read for fans of paranormal and thrillers. If you like Stephen King, I think there's a strong chance you will like this book, and maybe more of Patrick R. Delaney's work !

The House that Fell from the Sky by Patrick Delaney – 4 Stars
Publisher: Oblivion Publishing
ISBN: 9780578660790

The House that Fell from the Sky is difficult to review, but I thank Netgalley and the publisher for making it available to me for an honest opinion.

I enjoyed the story and loved the imagination put into it. The “House” is really much more than a house. I don’t understand the title at all, nor its characters suggesting it is a house. It appears as a physical, but paranormal, structure covering city blocks and at least seven stories high. Plus, the powers of the “House” go beyond just the physical structure alone and affect anybody close to it. The descriptions of the horror within it are vivid leaving little more to imagine; they are outright, unbelievably frightening. The four main characters (Scarlett, Tommy, Jackson, and Hannah), each with mental flaws or inhibitors that prevent them from moving on in life successfully fit the story well for each has a major disadvantage in facing the horror of the “House” that demands they work together to do so. A fifth character Vincent, a magician from the past who has an unknown, until the end, connection to them helps coordinate the teamwork and direction through the house.

I enjoy horror and began liking the detailed descriptions of the rooms within. However, the repetitive detail for each and every room became annoyingly tiresome to wade through. Hey, I get it. The place is scary, but I really didn’t care after the first four times to know what every crook and cranny looked like. Likewise, the “monsters” or occupants or spirits or whatever descripting are necessary, but later when still more ghouls were introduced, the same descriptions again with minor variances became boring. It was like going through a haunted house at a fair where every so many feet a figure pops out that isn’t much different – it’s the popping out that is scary. Yet, I must emphasize that the initial descriptions were shockingly memorable and provided a clear visual of the horror.

It took 15% to get to any horror. Until then, the four main characters and a few others were the story and that wasn’t well done. Much too much dialogue between the characters and little cohesive foundation. It took me a while to realize that Todd was Chief Briggs and he was Jackson’s father. Plus, Hannah was sort of a “left-town” person with very little description of who she was and details of why. I feel character building should have been done more effectively. This brings me to the “BEFORE” chapters which to me were no more than the author realizing that the initial character introductions were already too long, but the content in those chapters still needed to be told. They were of no real value and became page fillers. So, my summary of character building is that it was overloaded with chit-chat between young adults that acted like teens and from the dialogues I was being asked to form my own opinions instead of the author presenting meaningful meat and potatoes.

Despite struggling through the things that annoyed me, I couldn’t put this book down. The constant horror, twists and turns, and need to continue were gripping. Eventually, the entire picture became clear and the end came, not entirely as expected. However, it was presented effectively and was memorable.

I find that there were many 5-Star parts of this novel, but just enough 3-Star annoyances to make this an overall 4-Star performance. I look forward to improvements in this author’s future books to solidly define him as a great horror writer.

Amazing book!!

It's deep, dark and creepy. On par with some of the top horror writer out there!

I loved it. I was captivated, scared, freaked out and reeled in.

A must read for any hirror/sci-fi fan.

Will definitely look out for other titles from the author and recommend highly to fellow book lovers.

I loved this book! The characters were so well developed and I found myself being interested in each of their backstories. The beginning of the book sets up the characters and shows how truly wicked the house is. We get glimpses into the characters and it made me want to keep reading to find out more. The house itself is just downright creepy and the author does a great job at describing whatever scene is unfolding.

There was never a dull moment in this book for me personally, it always piqued my interest. I made notes throughout the book and I was always in awe or freaking out about situations, which says a lot about how much I enjoyed the book! If you enjoy strong characters and great scenery (and like horror, duh), read this book! You won't regret it.

I really really loved this book it was just what I needed. It reminds me of this show that was on the syfy channel I think it was of a house that basically appears out of nowhere, oh it was called channel zero: no end house. If you liked that show you will probably like this book. I will definitely be checking out more from this author. I also want to thank netgalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to review this book for my honest review!

Wow, if I've ever found a good book to read late at night, this is definitely it.

Especially the opening, the first chapter was my favorite part of the entire book. It defined our setting, characters, relationship, and main conflict without it ever seeming like the author was pushing it too hard. Definitely one of the best spooky intros that I've read, especially fitting for a book this crazy and unique.

The rest of the book was accordingly paced, it never felt as long as 500 pages and we got the perfect amount of time between the house and the characters. Speaking of characters, that was another strong point for this book. This book is very action-packed and very crazy like I talked about, but the author deals with this by putting flashbacks of happy or traumatic memories in between. I particularly enjoyed those, giving depth to characters that might not have had a lot earlier.

My only critiques are some better dialogue and a slower pace when we got to the house. As much as I loved the characters, I felt that the flashbacks was the only thing that held them together. I needed more distinguishable dialogue during conversations so when I heard someone saying something I'd instantly know who was saying it because of their personality. And, this is a small critique because it's only about the plot, but at some rooms in the house, I think it would've been necessary to slow down a little bit to make sure the reader was getting a full grasp of what was going on.

Great book, I've had little luck with finding good Net-Galleys and I was super pumped to receive this one.

First off, I need to mention how much I dig the cover of this book. Probably one of the coolest that I have seen in a long time. Next, I’m not about to go into this long description of the story and describe various characters etc. it is annoying when people give away half of the plot in their review.

I like this book. I like how Patrick allowed us to get to know each character. Often, authors are fast to get to the money shot. Not this book. It may be a slow burn but once it gets going, it gets going. I used to feel the same about the works of Joe Hill or even his Father for that matter. Both are brilliant writers and I have no doubt that Mr. Delaney will be among these greats one day. This is worth a read. It gets there and it stays there. I never lost interest once. I’m looking forward to his next novel.

I love haunted house stories, novels, movies, TV shows, if it has a haunted house chances are I've seen/read it. I love the cover, and that with the title grabbed me. After reading the description I was utterly sold. There is so much to love about this book. The homages to many of my favorite haunted stories both overtly in the text and subtly with the use of similar imagery and scenes added so many moments of joy to the tale for me. I loved that even characters acknowledged some of the more subtle ones as well.

A lot of the story involves the characters outside of the house, making the investment so that you care what happens inside. Jackson was 'my' character, I typically latch onto one. The parts that took place inside of the house were my favorite, as I expected. The creativity in those parts was wonderful, with beautiful dark imagery, and a truly creepy vibe. I'd love to see the house realized in a movie, or miniseries.

This should appeal to fans of epic atmospheric horror, or anyone who, like me, adores hauntings.

It's extremely rare for a book to terrify me so badly that I have to walk away several times, but this book did just that. As an experienced horror fan I found this book deeply unsettling in its ability to terrify me.

Patrick Delaney has give us the best horror book of this decade (at least in my mind). His excellently written terror fest is exciting and immersive. It is well written.

The characters are well thought out. The house itself being the best character. As alive in its haunting it should be considered a character, in my opinion.

The only thing I hated is that it sometimes scared me to the point I would have to walk away and watch children's shows to ease my mind. But if you love horror the best scare is the one that doesn't easily leave your mind.

Well done Patrick Delaney. I'd like to thank NetGalley for the opportunity to review this eARC.

Ok I think i need to re-read this and then my full detailed review will come closer to the publication date on Goodreads. I LOVE the premise of this so freaking much. If anyone tried to sell me on a haunted house story along the lines of The Haunting of Hill House or anything Shirley Jackson? Sign me the frick up. I seriously appreciate creative concepts like this so much, and yes, it was also executed well. I’ve been waiting for something like this that isn’t just a knock off but it’s not cheesy or gimmicky either which I’ve read in a lot of horror.

Would you spend a night in a haunted house for one million dollars? 👻

When a creepy house strangely falls from the sky one night in October, Scarlett's childhood friend, Hannah, becomes obsessed with the idea that the house is a portal to the afterlife and that it will allow her to reconnect with her dead mother.

Hannah is therefore determined to enter it and the opportunity to do so arises when a private company hosts a lottery, promising the winners the large amount of a million dollars if they manage to spend one night in the haunted house. Hannah will use her wealth to secure a place amongst the winners and enter the house - it is to save their friend that Scarlett, her brother Tommy and friend Jackson, will manage to step into the house too and from that moment on they will be involved in a series of scary events that will lead them to face their greatest fears, but, will they come out of the house alive?

This book has all the ingredients for the perfect horror story: .

• a gothic, scary looking , mysterious house that miracuolously falls from the sky,

•the protagonist, Scarlett is a horror books blogger, .

• the story is set on Halloween 🎃 .

I can't even put into words how much I have enjoyed reading this book, Patrick Delaney's writing style is just a pleasure to read- his attention for details and fast paced dialogues make this book a great spooky story to read under a cozy blanket on a rainy night.

The House That Fell From The Sky will be published on the 1st of September, you may want to mark the date on your calendar! 😉

Overall I felt this deserves 3 1/2 but could of been 4 stars. It started out well for me. The writing and suspenseful building of the unknown in the first half of the book was fantastic and it reminded me of some really great writers and movie directors so I expected the story to just get better. But by the time I got to about 65% in, it seemed to just drag slowly on from there. I think it was because it was overly descriptive once the characters made it into the house and much of the rest of the book was describing what the parts of the house were like. Some of the characters were barely likable & maybe only one or two really felt connectable and nothing life changing really happened until 95% through (in a flashback). Ending was decent but I really think I would of rated at a solid 4 stars if the book was 100 pages less. At over 500 pages it could of been cut back a bit and been just as good. I received this ARC from netgalley in return for my personal review.

The House that Fell from the Sky... what a book!

It does get very creepy and scary at some points, although admittedly I am not a big horror / H.P. Lovecraft connoisseur so fans of the genre may think I'm exaggerating when I say I had to take a break from the book and "look away" when it got too scary. It was so spooky!

The characters are somewhat unlikable but not in a bad way. You kind of want the House to win as you're following their antics... oops.

Would you spend a night in The House that Fell from the Sky for $1 million? After reading the book my answer is... thank you but no, thank you -you can keep your money!

Disclosure: I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for my advanced reader copy of the book. This is my honest review.

It’s going to be difficult to write a review of this book without spoiling the book. Books of this genre are better to go into completely unaware and unsuspecting.
The book is extremely descriptive, and whilst I do like that and it very much adds to the horror of this book; it can become a little too much and too tiring. Sometimes, I think, it's best to leave something to the readers imagination, (isn't that the best bit?). Some of the characters frustrated me a little and I felt their dialogue wasn't fitting to them or their age but besides this, the book was very good and I enjoyed it. I would read more from this author.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

OK, wow. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book like this. The world Delaney builds around the mysterious mansion is excellent. Not only is he able to conjure a massive structure, where time or space don’t seem to matter, he also portrays both likable and convincing characters.

At first, I was skeptical of Scarlett and her group of friends. They all seem to be in their late twenties, but yet were acting a lot younger. But then I thought, I also just turned thirty, and when I’m around my sisters and friends I don’t exactly act my age either. I think their interactions and the way they mess with each other made them seem more real and relatable.

The whole idea of the house and the company taking over is something completely new to me. It’s a fresh breath of air in the horror genre. The way Delaney is able to describe each room in the home is exceptionally well done. I felt myself teleported to the characters’ horrifying experiences.

I believe that The House that Fell from the Sky will be a huge hit in the horror community, and is definitely worth a read!

This was a great story with teenagers who are not so pleased with the hand life dealt them.

“𝙇𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙗𝙚 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙖𝙨 𝙙𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨. 𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙘𝙖𝙣’𝙩 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙚 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙨𝙚𝙚.”

This book starts off with a bang of confusion. A loud noise, flash of light and oh, a house appears in the middle of town. I mean, I would definitely be curious if a random spooky gothic victorian house appeared out of no where in my town. I’ve seen my fair share of scary movies and I’d still be that sucker to check it out.

Brief synopsis: After the news labels it “The House that Fell from the Sky”, Scarlet’s childhood best friend , Hanna, becomes consumed with entering the house. Hanna is convinced the house can bring her mother back from the dead. A company takes over the house and hands out lottery tickets for a lucky few to be the first to enter the worlds most haunted house.

The part that I loved most about this book was the character connections. I related and connected most with the main character. Her name is Scarlet and she’s a horror book nerd like all of us. Do I have you attention now? I hope so! This book felt like a mix of “Silent Hill” and “The Evil Within”. The visuals formed in your mind while reading is enough to create things that aren’t there in real life. I was really impressed with the book being about 530 pages that the pacing only slowed down once for. I gave this book a 4/5 ⭐️!

My mind has been chewed up and spit back out. I feel the walls vibrating and the shadows are moving in my periphery. How long have I been here? 1 minute? 2?

Wow! This was a mix of Pretty Little liars with dark, very dark twists. The written is so good that sometimes I really think I was "watching" instead of reading. Excellent!

I was excited to get an arc of this book as the cover and description appealed to me. The book is about a weird and horrifying house that appeared in the middle of the town one October night. The story begins rather slowly, the heroes won't get near the house till 1/5 of the book roughly. Additionally, there are flashbacks to the past that provide information on the characters' personalities. The second half of the books is more dynamic especially when Scarlett and her friends went inside the house. The book is quite scary with some Lovecraftian motives. The ending left me a bit disappointed as I expected something different.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for this arc in exchange of an honest review.

Delaney's book grabs on the first page and doesn't let go. A perfect mix of horror, sci-fi, and Lovecraft. Four friends + one haunted house = the best haunted house story since Rose Red and Haunting of Hill House.

Three stars from me! I rate based on the Goodreads system, so three stars translates to, "I liked it," In my opinion, it is difficult to find a unique, not done to death before, scary / spooky house story. With that being said, the basic idea of The House That Fell From the Sky is indeed unique, and because of such, I was thrilled to read this book. I am naturally an inquisitive person so no matter what I am reading, I am always asking, "How?" or "Why?"
and I am frustrated when the answers aren't provided. With this being said, I would have liked a clearer picture of just how this house came to be. My favorite genre is horror, but as much as I have read books involving paranormal encounters and haunted houses, most works leave me wondering, as stated before, "How and why?" I can accept that a house fell from the sky with a good backstory, but I can't accept that it came to be just because it happened to happen. I also couldn't connect with the characters, but neither of these things kept me from enjoying the book. I read to escape and for fun, and this book provided both of these things to me. I will certainly read more Delaney because I enjoyed his work.

The best way to approach this book is by knowing as little as possible going into it. That’s what I did and it was an amazing experience!

Briefly, the book is about four friends who, with the help of an enigmatic magician, try to understand the house that suddenly appeared out of nowhere one dark and stormy night. The house is strange enough on the outside, but once it’s doors finally unlock they realize the true nightmares lay within

This book hit a lot of personal likes of mine: from a focus on character building, to themes of family, friendship, and grief (a la Haunting of Hill House) to an irresistible mystery that needs solving, to terrifying images of monsters and dark chaos. I love that there’s such a cool mix of horrors (ghosts, ghouls, creepy crawlers, monsters, eldrich terrors, etc). Healthy doses of Silent Hill, Lovecraft, King, and more. I also loved how imaginative the inside of the house is and all of the twists and turns in the second half (with some moments in the final act I did NOT see coming!! At over 500 pages it drags just a bit in some spots, but overall I was definitely down for this epic tale!

Suspenseful and fantastic story!
One of those classic, dangerous house mysteries.
The plotline was mixed up with the eerie behaviour of the characters and the spooky setting.
So dark!!!

Ok. So I was expecting something completely different than what I got! This is a slow burn, lovcraftian vibe, creature feature. I enjoyed it but for someone who likes a high pace plot, this would not be for you. Thankfully, the author is not incredibly wordy and that does help the plot move along. Overall, good storyline and unpredictable ending.

Four friends find themselves drawn to a mysterious house that just appeared in the middle of their town. A big mysterious mansion that literally fell from the sky and propped itself up in the middle of the town refusing to allow entrance, a sickness, sadness, and madness emanating from it, infecting all those in the surrounding area.
When the four friends (Jackson, Tommy, Scarlett, and Hannah) sneak to the house, they all are overwhelmed by different sensations and all hallucinate different things. Hannah thinks she sees her recently dead mother in the house and becomes obsessed with going in to find her.
Somehow the house becomes the property of a corporation that holds a strange lottery to allow two random people (who can bring friends) via a special invite. Whomever is picked must stay in what everyone calls "the haunted house" overnight, and if so they will win $1,000,000 each.
Of course the four wind up in that mansion and realize it's not just haunted, its maddening and malevolent.
In the end they all do the best they can for each other but things still don't end picture perfect. Reading some of these scenes was absolutely horrifying, like traveling through hell on acid perhaps...I wished they had gotten into the mansion quicker but when they did, things really picked up and the bizarre creatures and mind-resets they experienced would be truly horrifying.
The complexities of the characters and their relationships both with each other, and with their parents, made them so much more realistic. The fact that they all felt like losers at the age of 29, each in their own right not where they thought they'd be at their age, had a familiar feel. I enjoyed the tension between Jackson and Scarlett. I appreciated the distance that happened between Hannah and Tommy. These rifts and tensions happen in all types of relationships, so it is always good to have this type of tension, since simple easy relationships are something I loathe in fiction (can't relate lol).
Although I felt the pacing could've been a little quicker before they entered the mansion, I enjoyed getting to know the group. I liked towards the end the mansion chapters and flashback chapters sequences, because the mansion was heavy and I like having a break and it created the page-turning atmosphere you want it a book, I just wish it had been that way from the beginning, or closer to the beginning. Still, this did not take away from my overall enjoyment and the major creepy vibes that happened before they even entered the house. I especially loved Jackson's hallucination (?) on the street outside of the bookstore. The monster in the sky. Wow.... I would recommend this book for lovers of horror and would really enjoy seeing this as a movie.

As per usual, Abby and I had a blast reading with the @night_worms for the #NightWormsBookParty - we both love a good haunted house story!

Patrick Delaney's THE HOUSE THAT FELL FROM THE SKY has an excellent premise and some wonderfully written scenes! It took about 100 pages for me to get into it, but besides the need for a bit of editing, it's a great read.

Twenty-something Scarlett Vantassel is struggling at life, so she decides to move back home to renew old friendships. But she soon discovers her childhood friends have struggles of their own and are vulnerable to the foreboding darkness to come. A mysterious house literally falls from the sky, right in the middle of the city, which causes upheaval in the town and media chaos. And this house is not your average suburban cookie-cutter tract home either; it's a gothic-style mansion oozing with disquieting undertones, nefarious intentions, and puzzling questions. Scarlett is cautious while others want to score a ticket to see the show. Scarlett’s friend Hannah is determined to gain admission as she believes it answers the age old question - what happens in the afterlife?

Remember Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? Well, Delaney crafted a clever story with a similar, sinister vibe - but with horror! We received pretty cool swag, including a lottery ticket with the book, so I assume that connection is purposeful, which is awesome. The chapters that focus on the house itself are fantastic, easily five stars! However, the character development is unbalanced so brought it down to three stars. Some details are gratuitous, while others are missing altogether. If this book were restructured with a focus on the house from the start, it would be a better reading experience. Also, editing down about 150 pages would provide a more succinct story and sharpen the pace. Although, for a being a 500-some-odd page book, it was an easy read. As an aside, major props to the cover art as it is a stunner!

All in all, this is a fun ride in the end. Read it so we can talk about it!

Special thanks to the author for my copy.

As the title states, this is a story about a House that fell from the sky. Well we really do not know where it came from, but one day it just appeared in the town where friends, Scarlett, her brother Tommy, his girlfriend Hanna, and their friend, Jackson live. Jackson's dad is the police chief and is talked into letting the four friends and Scarlett's dad get close to the house. The house by now has already caused one death and one person who went inside seems to now be insane. After leaving the house and for the next year they all start to see weird things. This is the one part of the book that I just can't wrap my head around. The house is bought by a corporation who decides to let lottery winners inside the house on the next Halloween eve. There is very little explanation as to what the government or any authority tried to do for a year's time. Anyhow, guess who wins the lottery, kind of. Inside we are treated to some very detailed descriptions of what they are seeing and what is happening to them. This was my favorite part of the book. The visuals the author was able to create for me were detailed and while creepy, they were great. I will not go farther as I do not want to ruin the very gripping ending. I give this book a solid 4 star rating. I am very stingy with my 5 stars. I was privileged to be given this book in exchange for a review from Netgally, this was surly one of my best pics.

**This review will be posted on my Instagram book blog close to the publication date**

A house that dropped off the sky, and a group of friends adamant to find out the secrets that lie within. Such a catchy blurb, what’s not to like! I was a bit intimidated by the length of it but I had to get in!
Alright, first things first, it’s exceptionally written, even when the dialogues seemed a bit forced, the writing flowed very well and I truly liked how it was written and the way the whole story was told. This might be a chunker but the chapters were short and that helped in keeping the reading pace up. The idea was brilliant and really enjoyable, reminded me of Charlie and the chocolate factory, and took it up a notch by adding in the creepy, evil vibes of the house.

What bothered me just a little bit was how descriptive it was. It took very long to get to the heart of the story and after that, it was kinda predictable and read so much like a YA, the characters all acted and talked like spoiled teens, which they aren’t in this story! I encountered a few brick walls in the story too, which is normal I guess, given the length of the book. So basically what I’m saying is that this could have been better 100-200 pages short.

I have to say it, I think this book and writing takes on after King, well written, character-driven, and full-on descriptive, but just a tad bit short on the execution of a brilliant idea. Also, now I want that special edition of The Stand that’s mentioned in the book if it exists. Lol.

Thanks to Netgalley, publishers, and authors for the ARC.

Thank you, Oblivion publishing, and NetGalley for a copy of The House that fell from the sky by Patrick Delaney. This is a new genre for me to read and I was taken in by the Blurb and the fantastic cover.
When a mysterious house falls from the sky in the small town of Winterview. There is a lot of speculation where it is come from. At first no one could enter the house. There were no door handles and those who have got disastrous side effects.
The story centres around four friends Scarlett, Tommy, Jackson and Hannah. The build-up to the day they go into the house and what they faced whilst in there and Vincent the Magician who at first the authorities thought the house was a stunt, he pulled but when they change their mind when things start to happen.
Well what can I say about this book. I loved the premise of this story. It really drew me in. But I found the characters were a bit immature for their age considering they were supposed to be in their twenties. I expected this book to be spine tingling scary novel. Or is that my perception of what a horror book should be, I don’t know. I thought that the build up before they went into the house was too long. I wanted more about the house and the author kept going back before. When they were all friends together and when they first met Vincent. Don’t get me wrong, its not a bad book but I just expected more than it delivered.

Finally a haunted house story that is actually creepy.

A house appears in the middle of the city. No one knows where it came from, Only that no one can get inside. A corporation buys it and creates a lottery for the people in town to go inside the one day the house opens up. However, before the door opens the house still haunts people.

There are many unhappy souls caught in the house. There is no reason why they're caught and I'm glad it's never explained. I don't need reason in a ghost story. I just need creepy ghosts.

The beginning was slow. As much as time was spent on the characters I could never figure out the main character, Scarlett. Her wanting to become a detective came out of no where. She had a popular vlog for horror novels. She never mentioned being interested in mysteries or true crime. Personally, I judged her considering The Stand as one of the best books written. I know people are fans of Stephen King but really? The Stand?

"Rose Red meets Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

When twenty-nine-year-old Scarlett Vantassel comes to the conclusion that her life doesn't resemble any of the things she actually wanted for herself, she drops out of school and moves back home, attempting to reconnect with the people she left behind. But a shadow falls over her return one early October morning when a sinister house miraculously appears in the center of the city, sparking a media frenzy that attracts attention nationwide.

Soon after the newspapers label it, "The House that Fell from the Sky," Scarlett's childhood friend Hannah becomes obsessed with the idea that the house holds the key to discovering whether there really is life after death. Undeterred by her friends' numerous warnings, Hannah becomes increasingly consumed with the desire to enter the house, convinced it would allow her to reconnect with her recently deceased mother.

Despite a series of escalating events suggesting that the house may be more dangerous than anyone ever thought possible, a privately owned company seizes control of the property and hosts a lottery to lure the city's residents, promising the winners a large cash reward if they dare to enter the house. To Scarlett's horror, Hannah uses her vast wealth to secure a spot among the winners to gain access to the house.

Now, it's up to Scarlett, her older brother Tommy, and her friend Jackson to face their fears and journey into a place where nothing is ever quite as it seems, and decide if they can help a friend in need, or if Hannah truly is lost."

Sold at the mention of Rose Red. In other news, I am now rewatching Rose Red.

I have just finished reading the house that fell from the sky and WOW if you like creepy tentacled beasts then this is the book for you. I found the novel to be a beautifully crafted, atmospheric novel that drags you in to a surreal nightmare scenario. Which is what the citizens of Winterview realise when a massive Gothic house turns up out of nowhere and anyone who gets close to it goes insane or dies. Ultimately its a tale of friendship on acid and having the worst trip of your life. My only critcism with the book is, it is long a 573 pages and I found my attention wavering at times but plough on as it is good

This book was all over the place. It was eerie and atmospheric, but also confusing at times. The horror elements in this book were extremely vivid and very creepy. Most of it read like a horror film. This would be an awesome film if adapted correctly.

Scarlett is home at her father's house when the power goes out suddenly and things get weird fast. The house that appears in town, taking up multiple city blocks, is a complete unknown. Police don't know what to make of it, neither does anyone else. The closer you get to the house, the stranger things get.

Strangely, this house sits there for a year before this giant Crow Corporation announces the lottery being held. Scarlett and her friends are granted access to enter the house and whoever can survive the night inside the house will be awarded one million dollars each.

So, Scarlett, her brother Tommy, his girlfriend (and Scarlett's bestie) Hannah and their other very good friend, Jackson (along with one other individual whom I won't reveal for spoiler purposes) enter the house and have to survive the night. But, inside the house they are constantly getting separated, shown terrifying sights and are getting sicker and sicker the longer they stay inside.

The cast of characters in this book were great. I loved Scarlett. I loved how she interacted with each of the rest of the group. She has her flaws, yes, but who doesn’t? And she is dealing with her own struggles that you get bits and pieces of along the way. I wasn’t a huge fan of Hannah, on the other hand. She just seemed problematic for me.

All in all, this was a really creepy book. But even having read it in its entirety, I'm still left confused. There is a lot of going back in time and being given information about things that happened in the past that connect everyone together, that help tell the full story... But still, WHAT?!?! Very scary visuals and sense of fear, though. I really enjoyed this one.

Wow, what can I say about this book? I definitely didn't expect to love it so much!

Scarlett is a great character and I found myself relating to her lots - a blogger, into anything horror related and older than a teenager too! I found that I couldn't wait to read more about her life and her relationships with her friends. Jackson and Tommy I also loved. Hannah was a pretty annoying character for me, but she needed to be like that in order for the story to progress.

I loved the description of the gothic inspired house and I could really imagine what it looked like. The description of the horrors inside the house were also great and I found it really spooky and creepy. Some of the creatures were very inventive and pretty scary to imagine! I liked learning about the back story behind the house and where it came from and how it was built. I hate when authors leave things like that unexplained. I also really liked how there was past connections between some of the characters.

All in all, a great spooky read that I will definitely be re-reading in the future. A brilliant horror story that I wouldn't mind having a sequel to!

The House that fell from the sky - there, this is the focal point. I requested this book just by seeing the title. I’m a big sucker for anything that involves gothic mansions and creepy/haunting houses.

Scarlett, a horror book/movie blogger feels like she hit a dead end and wants to stop the routine, one a night while filming her last vlog, she and the entire town of Winterview notices other worldly disturbances, which is caused by a giant house literally falling from the sky!

The story is developed carefully and is divided into 4 parts. First, deals with the people of Winterview and their view on the house. Second, provides a background of our 4 main characters - Scarlett, her brother Tommy, his girlfriend Hannah and their friend Jackson, who is in love with Scarlett since forever. All these characters supplemented the story with their unique traits. Third, there’s a new bad boy corporate in town who claims the house to do “experiments” and to make it “interesting” the Crow Corporation announces their own version of “Hunger Games” - 4 people, 1 night. 1 million each!! The final part, happens inside the house with the 4 participants.

The house itself gave me Haunting of the Hill House feels and I think its safe to say that its a love-child of Lovecraft & Willy Wonka. Weird + creative + insanely creepy. They weren’t that horrific for me, but the happenings definitely churned me!! The house has a indefinite reality - it can change as it pleases, and resets itself when someone ends. After all “the house is alive”. I loved the concept, but my only complaint is that this is a big book, easily 500+ pages which sometimes minimised my interest and hold to the story.

4/5 ⭐️

Thank you Oblivion Publishers, Patrick Delaney & Netgalley for the arc. This is my own honest opinion.

It’s a very slow start. I mean VERY slow. But if you make it past the 15% mark you will fall in love with this eerie book. It defies genre and is part science fiction, part fantasy, part mystery ...and so on. I read the book but I think it would be even better as an audiobook. I think the characters would be even more vibrant if you heard from Scarlett directly. I am still thinking about this book even a week after finishing it. And for me that’s a sign of an amazing story. No wonder it’s received so many positive reviews. Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

Synopsis from Google:
When twenty-nine-year-old Scarlett Vantassel comes to the conclusion that her life doesn't resemble any of the things she actually wanted for herself, she drops out of school and moves back home, attempting to reconnect with the people she left behind

My Thought:
Personally I think it didn’t have to be that long. The characters here are really good, I really liked that. It’s kinda hard to get into the book, at first, it’s a bit slow. The opening with the house arriving was good. Maybe if certain parts had been condensed a bit, it would've kept the pace and tenseness at a higher level.

I liked the relationship between the characters. One mention is that I really wish we'd gotten into the house a little bit sooner than we do because I read a couple of hundred pages and kept wondering if it was around the corner. Rather than build tension for me, this sort of just started making me want to rush past the stuff that didn't really seem to have anything to do with the actual plot. Mentions of character's appearances were a bit repetitive, and I could've done without certain bits that felt a little more like trimmable bulk than necessary weight.

A very good story, gripping and entertaining. I liked the spooky atmosphere, the style of writing and the world building.
It's a page turner that kept me on the edge till the end.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.

This was not the best horror I have read, but it still made for a decent, fairly original read. A huge mansion type of house just lands on top of a part of a town and no one can figure out where it came or what the motivation was. It will not let anyone get inside at first, even with the military and scientists trying everything they know. I cannot really say I ever really connected with any of the characters. Pretty much all of the main characters have issues/drama going on, and the author spends a good bit of time on that and a little less on the actual house than I would have liked. So that made it a little harder to want to pick up and read some days if I was not in the best of mood in the first place, knowing I would be reading about others' drama issues. It still made for a good book though. Just one of those horrors with a little more drama in it than I like.

I am a big horror fan though I’ve never really branched into horror books. I am so glad I finally took the plunge.
This book was the first thing I thought about when I woke up, constantly trying to find time to keep reading this book.
Though it had a bit of a slow start I was intrigued. At around 35% it really picked up and there were a few twists and turns along the way.
I highly recommend this book to all horror fans out there.
Given the opportunity would you enter the house that fell from the sky? I know I would.
I found Scarlett’s character very relatable what with being an avid horror fan who never really knew where my place was in the world.
This book was very descriptive and really well written in my opinion.
I can’t wait to see what else Patrick R. Delaney has got in store for us.

THIS BOOK WAS GREAT! I am a huge horror fan, rather it is books or movies. This book did not let me down. I loved this story so much. It gave me all feels I was looking for. I could see reading this in October and but I couldn't wait so I had to read when it when I got approved! This plot and story were done great and so easy to follow. I had all the chills I wanted from this. The characters were written very well! I felt like I was in the middle of Hill House! I loved this! I will make sure to check out other works by this author!

I highly recommend this read!

Patrick R. Delaney has written a story with a huge concept and some more regular ones we all know, grief, friendships and the choices we make.

Scarlett Vantassel has a fantastic horror YouTube channel which she has taken a break from in an attempt to reconnect with the people she once loved. Its not long before a creepy house appears in her town of Winterview, bring unease and mystery. Pulled to this house by her friend Hannah, Scarlett must face horrors unimaginable.

It really warmed me to read of these characters friendships and bond. It is very clear that the main group of Scarletts friends are the real deal. The type of friends who really have your back. It annoys me and causes tension when one becomes unreasonable, but perfectly understandable as the experience grief. The character development really shows towards the end of the book.

What an unique plot. I felt that some description parts went on too long but I also felt that the author had such a great vision and understanding of this story that it needed to be in there to make sense. I really enjoyed the suspense of, how is this going to end? Why is the house there? When a book makes you question these things you generally don't give up on it and this kept my interest dispute the long descriptions.

I gave this 3 stars on Goodreads. Only because of the heavy description that did not suit me as a reader but it does not mean it won't suit someone else! If you like stranger things, this will be right up your alley. If you enjoy big descriptions that really set the horror and bizarre experiences these characters have, add it to your want to read list and sink your teeth in.

Thank you to Net Galley and Oblivion publishing for an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.

I enjoyed this book. The characters were well likeable and the pace was spot on. The spooky vibe is what kept me reading. You know when you are watching a horror movie and it is the music or sound that puts you on edge? That noise makes it hard to turn away and that is what it felt like reading this book.

Ultimately, I felt like the ending was missing something. I've taken some time to put my finger on this feeling and I'm not sure I wanted a different ending but I do feel a little dissatisfied. I would still recommend this book though because it was a great journey!

Reading this book felt like a rollercoaster. But a long one. Is that good or bad? Depends on if you like rollercoasters! I do. It starts off strong. Scarlett is feeling pretty down. Her entire life is changing and she doesn't know where to go next. Back living with her father and working a dead end job. While thinking of filming her final vlog something huge happens. A loud noise, loss of power, weird lights, and then there is a giant house that seems to have just fallen from the sky. Sounds intriguing. You know they are getting into that house, right?

So, part of the lull was the time it took to get back to the house. At first it is all action, the army and some shady private security company descend on the town. Then....nothing. We do get to know more about the relationships between the four main characters (her dad just kind of disappears after being pretty cool in the beginning.) But this is where I put it down a lot in favor of other things. It's not that it isn't interesting and that there isn't a lot to learn about the characters, Scarlett's brother, his girlfriend, her best friend...but sometimes they just talked about stuff instead of showing us things and letting us experience it. Because of that, I don't think I ever really liked any of the characters that much.

Don't worry, though, it picks up again about halfway through.

The House. This house reminded me of House of Leaves without having to turn the book every direction to read it. It becomes a psychological thriller. You don't know what is real and what is just the house messing with you. That's the fun part. Everything is not tied up for you in a neat little bow, but it shouldn't be in a story like this. If you like haunted houses and narratives that mess with your mind, this is for you. It was for me.

🧡 Review 🧡
This book took me all last month to read. I'm not really sure why. It was a slow build I'm guessing is why. About halfway through it picked up and I finished in a couple days. The story isn't bad, it's actually effectively creepy and it's a great plot. The bond is what the story is really about. It's a good read for spooky time of year. Thank you to @netgalley and @patrickrdelaney along with the publisher Oblivion publishing for allowing me to read the book.

Four Friends find themselves in front of a house that essentially falls from the sky. Out of nowhere this house appears in the middle of the city, and about a year after it appears they have a trial about who owns the house. The new owner of the house host a lottery for anyone who can survive the night in the house wins $1 million. Hannah, Tommy, Jackie, and Scarlet are all best friends who are into the house. There is one other man named Vincent who enters with them. The story is essentially about the bonding of friends and what we do for each other as friends with a super creepy factor mixed in.

I just finished this book and I have no idea what to think. It started out good and interesting and I had the feeling the book and I would get along well.
Then came the second chapter and I felt like I was reading about a bunch of teenagers instead of people close to 30 and I became annoyed with the book and almost didn't finish it. I say "almost" because after the second chapter, my interest into this book was sparked again, so I kept reading.
Then, something I've ever experienced with a book before happened.
I read and I read, because it started to get really interested when they went to check out the house and then I glanced at the little number down on the page that tells me how far I've read in percentage. I was shocked and stunned to see that I had almost finished the book without realising it.
The issue is that I can barely remember anything that happened in the middle. It feels like reading the first few chapters and then, all of a sudden, I had already reached the end. Even if I am not fond of a book and don't want to remember the middle, I usually remember having read the middle...
However, the end made this book really worth the while. It starts with the car accident and from that, it picks up pace incredibly fast and I was completely smitten by the book once again. The ending almost broke my heart, which was not exactly what I expected. I felt for Scarlett when she lost her best friend and brother and I am uncertain whether I think there should/could be a second book or not. The ending was incredibly well done; I love a ending that sums up the book well while staying open, so there's room for a potential sequel.
I have no idea how to rate that book. The ending is 5-stars worth, in my opinion, but I am irritated about that missing middle.
Three stars seems a bit low, because that book wasn't medicore, except for the second chapter (I really did not like that second chapter...).
I think I am going to settle on four stars because I was positively surprised by the ending.

This book is about four friends who, with the help of an enigmatic magician, try to understand the house that suddenly appeared out of nowhere one dark and stormy night. The house is strange enough on the outside, but once it’s doors finally unlock they realize the true nightmares lay within. A quick creepy read

I have to thank NetGalley for potentially introducing me to my new favorite author and potential favorite book of 2020. I have heard of Delaney before, but never read any of his work. This book checked ALL of the boxes and more. From the instant I started reading, I felt an instant connection to not only the stories, but the characters, as well. All of the main characters are so relatable and likeable. The story has all of the classic horror elements, with modernity added throughout with many awesome pop culture references that had me smiling from ear to ear. I can't remember the last time a book not only terrified me but actually made me emotional, as well. The ending is perfect and I could not have asked for a better ending. This is the first book I have read in exchange for a free review that I think I will have to buy a copy of for my collection, as well as any other books from Delaney now.

What a ride!
From the moment I saw the cover, I knew I had to read it! I’m so grateful to Oblivion Publishing and NetGalley for sending me an e-copy in exchange for an honest review!

Delaney is very detail-oriented and that allowed me to visualize every moment as if I were there in the scene. He also invests time in his characters, which allowed me to get to know them and gave me more of an interest in their journey as the story progressed.

I know not every reader appreciates a slow burn, but I enjoyed every moment Delaney put into building up the tension and dread. There was even a moment that spooked me so much strictly because of the build up and from that moment on I couldn’t read it at night.
When the characters finally interact with the house, the pacing gets thrown off a bit, but that actually helped me to get into the mind of the characters.

What didn’t work for me was the age of the characters. They were supposed to be late twenties but acted more like early twenties at the oldest. I also wish we got more of an explanation regarding Vanessa and the creation of the house. I don’t like the big gaps of information even in a cosmic horror story like this one when some mystery is expected.

Overall, I really enjoyed my time reading this book and I want to read many more stories from this author!

Highly twisted nightmare of a story delving into life after death. Totally resets the bar of what a haunted house story should be.

A rather ominous house violently appears out of nowhere in a small town that is going nowhere. So what's this house all about? What's inside its locked doors? Give it a read. I was glad I did. Characters are well drawn so you get to know these people. They are all 30ish and sometimes I felt they acted immaturely for that age, but that is just my opinion. The story makes extensive use of imagery so the reader can get the full effect of the environments the characters experience. You will able to "see" what they see. Job well done, Mr. Delaney!
