Description

New York Times bestselling author Charles Belfoure takes readers on a breathless journey from the gilded ballrooms of Imperial Russia to the grim violence of the pogroms, in his latest thrilling historical adventure.

St Petersburg, 1903. Prince Dimitri Markhov counts himself lucky to be a close friend of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra. Cocooned by the glittering wealth of the Imperial court, the talented architect lives a life of luxury and comfort, by the side of his beautiful but spiteful wife, Princess Lara. But when Dimitri is confronted by the death and destruction wrought by a pogrom, he is taken aback. What did these people do to deserve such brutality? The tsar tells him the Jews themselves were to blame, but Dimitri can't forget what he's seen.

Educated and passionate, Doctor Katya Golitsyn is determined to help end Russian oppression. When she meets Dimitri at a royal ball, she immediately recognizes a kindred spirit, and an unlikely affair begins between them. As their relationship develops, Katya exposes Dimitri to the horrors of the Tsar's regime and the persecution of the Jewish people, and he grows determined to make a stand . . . whatever the cost.

A huge thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read Charles Belfoure's masterpiece, The Faberge Secret.

I mean it when I say "masterpiece!" The design of this novel was phenomenal! The story focuses on two important people: Dimitri and Katya. Dimitri is a prince who has close ties to the Tsar and is considered one of the best Russian architects. He is in a love-less marriage and plays the rules of Court-life well---though he is not satisfied with his current life. One ball though, Dimitri meets Katya--a rare female doctor. She is witty, intelligent, and she and Dimitri hit it off immediately. Katya brings him into her world of aristocrats--those privileged few who are wealthy based on their hard work rather than nobel blood. Her friends talk of revolutions and the blight of the poor workers of Russia. Underlying all the unrest, Russian police and mob-starters create chaos and havoc amongst the Jews living in Russia--destroying homes, raping Jewish young women, and killing any Jew they can get their hands on. Katya and her friends are appalled and want to do something about it. After witnessing a slaughter of Jews in a small town, Dimitri is won over to the cause. He hates the oppression but loves the Tsar like a brother. How far is Dimitri willing to go to help Katya and her friends fight against injustice? You'll have to read the rest and find out!

It's worth it, I assure you! Sex, espionage, betrayal, and revolution all make up for a very interesting read indeed!
