Description

CBI agent Buck Taylor is back in book 6 of the CRIME series by Chuck Morgan, 2020 Pacific Book Awards Best Mystery Winner for Crime Denied (Book 5).

Colorado Bureau of Investigation agent Buck Taylor and his team have investigated some interesting cases, but these may be their strangest cases yet. While Buck’s team deals with a missing Native American woman, Buck is called to a small town full of conspiracy theorists to determine if the deaths of seven hikers, all who died under mysterious circumstances, is a crime or a natural phenomenon.

With time running out, Buck’s team must deal with human skeletons, dermestid beetles, and a lack of evidence to try to save the missing woman. At the same time, Buck’s investigation leads to hidden government bunkers, sonic weapons, bigfoot, alien abductions and a top-secret Cold War program that will send chills up and down your spine, to determine where the conspiracy theories end and the truth begins.

"Chuck Morgan’s Crime Conspiracy is the sixth book in his Buck Taylor series, but the author gives enough background information throughout the story to allow it to be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel. Morgan’s plot is thought-provoking, giving readers much to consider as Buck investigates the disappearance of Dee Hightower.

The secondary plot concerning the fate of Professor Carmichael’s “ghost grizzly” survey team in the Weninuche Wilderness Area is a bonus for readers, giving them an additional mystery to solve.

Morgan’s characters are well-defined and authentic, and while this was my first Buck Taylor novel, I soon felt as though Buck was an old friend. Crime Conspiracy bristles with red herrings and pesky evidence rules that are true-to-life, and I had a grand time reading it. Crime Conspiracy is most highly recommended.  Reviewed by Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite

I found Chuck Morgan’s Crime Conspiracy to be a wonderfully compelling read, containing a superbly crafted plot that finely balances the many facets of this complex and dramatic story. All of the characters were unique and engaging, and some were positioned nicely to build on the mystique within the story; Deputy Sheriff Scott Sage was one such player that carried this potential, which was established in a very subtle way. The thing that Crime Conspiracy does perhaps best of all is to reflect what true reality is, where there are no black or white answers; life more often than not comes in shades of gray, and this book is painted in all of the richness of that color. This is a book you can’t put down, which will entertain you on many levels, and at times make your skin crawl; the kind of book that remains in your thoughts long after you finish reading.  Reviewed by Steven Robson for Readers' Favorite

Author Chuck Morgan has crafted another great story to add to the Buck Taylor legacy, and this one really takes the prize for the most intriguing and surprising so far. One of the things I especially like about the series is the continuous progression of Buck as a character, always willing to develop and learn new things, openminded and adaptable to any situation. This makes for a truly dynamic story where anything is possible, and a hero you can root for even when it looks like all is lost. Without wishing to give away too much about the secrets revealed in this story, suffice to say the reveals are well timed in the plot, and the atmosphere is electric once the truth is unveiled. Overall, I would highly recommend Crime Conspiracy as a chilling read for action and crime fiction fans everywhere.  Reviewed by K.C. Finn for Readers' Favorite"

This book has at least three different mysteries, and is very well written. The characters are excellent, and the setting is interesting. Very entertaining, although I don't like it when not all questions are answered.

Crime Conspiracy weaves two major plot lines.

Dee Hightower is a diligent and ambitious Native American woman. She studied part time for six years to get her diploma, but on the night of her final exam, she disappears. Is she one of several ‘disappeared’ Native American women or is there something different going on here?

Professor Dale Carmichael and his team of students are on a hiking trip, tracking grizzlies in the Colorado mountains. Somehow they all end up dead. Does the strange manner in which they are found have something to do with the mysterious military operations being carried out in the area?

What happens to Dee may be a bit dark for some, but as a murder mystery, this is an intelligent, original and well written book. The characters are intelligent and credible and the setting in Colorado is interesting and evocative. I would certainly recommend this book and I look froward to trying other books by this author.

A compelling read, this book cleverly weaves multiple plot lines in a way which is engaging and not confusing, No need to worry if you have not read the other books as the book stands alone. Very good, detailed mystery although a couple of loose threads to perhaps be picked up in the next book.
