A Heart Worth Healing

Thank you to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for a fair review. This is another in my romance series, which I'm really enjoying so far and hope you do too. 

This was a nice, short and sweet read. It was quite simple, not too much going on - a tiny smattering of intrigue, a great big heaping dollop of guilt and a need to do the right thing. I liked the fact the MC is made out to be independent and feminist and such without making fun of her sister, who just wants to marry. That was nice, as I have a gripe with strong female MC's who use negativity towards traditional roles to further enforce their own individuality

This book was well paced, and I didn't find that any one bit felt too rushed or too slow. Its drama is routed in real life, which was enjoyable - as whilst I would have enjoyed just a touch more drama it was also nice to read something that was realistic in its adversarial events. 

I love the fact it's based loosely on real events - on a real Doctor who moved out following malpractice; and I know it isn't related to the story but reading the author talk about this in the author notes was really nice, as you could tell how passionate she was about the story, how much love went into researching this amazing real life individual. That really shines through in the book too, just how passionate the author was to see Elliot succeed.

The romance is nice, you know from the get go who our handsome rogue will end up being; but that wasn't a negative for me. I'm not a huge love triangle person who always appreciate when we know who to place our bets onThe only thing I would have liked in the book was some kind of retribution on the mayor or his wife. Have one of them slip and fall or hurt themselves and have to be patched up by Elliot. Make them face their own prejudices, and have to accept that what they did was wrong. I liked the ending scene with the other Doctor/Pharmacist, but I would have adored a 'stick it to em!' scene with her naysayers. </p>

I kept expecting throughout the book for something to either go more wrong or for it to turn out her malpractice was a deception. When she said she couldn't remember doing it, and that the signature didn't look right to me that screamed that one of her peers had done it and pinned it on her. On the one hand, I'm happy she has to just own her mistake and work to improve and accept it; but on the other I really thought that's the way the story was going and would have liked to have seen her succeed. I'm glad the story went the way it did, though in my head I still recon one of the other newbies did it and knew they could pin it on the exhausted 'Lady Doctor' with little investigation.</p>

Simply put, I really enjoyed this book. It was similar to a Cat Sebastien in terms of its level of peril, and I always enjoy that. It had a satisfying ending, and I love that it's based on a real individual.

Will running away be the answer to her plight ...

I am always a sucker for tale with female doctors set in the past when just being a woman was already a struggle.
This story is told from the heroine point of view, a woman on the run from her past and mistakes. 
Believing beginning anew would erase her slate.
I much liked this read even if I was upset by Ellie.
Sure, she was forthright about being a woman, yet she chooses to hide the why behind her need for a new place.
And while it is no 21th century with all the social networks, it was also not the middle age, informations and news traveled, slower but nevertheless.
Ellie is no debutante, she is a licensed physician, yet it is her coming of age story. The moment when she will reach adult age and endorse her failures and move forward instead of hiding.
In some way it is more a woman fiction than a romance, as the love story can have its chance only if she stands for herself and accepts her errors.
So we follow Ellie from her first day in small mining town, where she has to fight her way as being a female doctor is already an impediment, plus being ignorant of the wildness and also always looking over her shoulder, afraid her past comes to be known, she is in for a bumpy ride.
Her love interest is a man who struggles too, he has his own demons, he strives to stay standing on his own two feet. Yet he is the first of the many hands stretched to help Ellie find she came to the right place.

This book is Ellie’s first leg in her journey to her new beginning.
A lovely second chance story.
Yet I would have liked to know a bit more about Ellie’s life in Sage Canyon, if some of the mean protagonists got some paybacks for their despicable actions.

I have been granted an advance copy by the author, here is my true and unbiased opinion.

I absolutely love this style of historical fiction. Rural small town America, women defying the odds, and a dash of romance! The storyline kept my attention and I really liked the character development. It had a hallmark “When Calls The Heart” feel and I really liked that especially after having just watched the show. I would recommend this book to others.

After a life and career incident at her job in Boston  Elliot “Ellie” Lennox decided to make a change in her life and went west to be the town physician  in Sage Canyon Colorado. The mayor who hired her was under the impression he had hired a male doctor- the mayor just had not read her paperwork carefully because she had made sure he knew she was a woman. The mayor was certain the towns people would not accept a female doctor so Ellie knew she had to prove to him they would.
This is a good book for a quiet afternoon of reading. It is a strong female showing she has what it takes to succeed. The friendship and romance are just the right amount.

One mistake can change your life forever - or so Dr. Ellie believes as she leaves her family and home to practice medicine in a small town in the west.  In a male dominated field such as medicine, it's impossible for her to defend herself or be given any forgiveness for a mistake made in utter exhaustion that led to a young boy's death.  Once Ellie arrives in her new home, the mayor who hired her is horrified to learn that Elliott is actually Ellie - not the male physician he believed he hired.  Luckily, Ellie is determined to make this job hers - and provide good medical care for the town while she does it.  This is a charming and inspiring story.
