Description

"In this inspirational memoir, Connie looks back on her life and asks, “did I make a difference?” She reveals the wisdom of being open to opportunities and where that led her. At the same time, Davis acknowledges that risking can be dangerous, and it can be difficult to weigh the consequences and to determine how much risk one can tolerate.

An underlying thread throughout is that one has to develop and trust their intuition.

If you can put yourself out there, move out of your comfort zone to be open to new friends, it can lead to new adventures.

By sharing episodes and stories from her life, Connie inspires you to take calculated risks. And although life doesn’t give too many second chances, it’s not too late, and there is still time!"

This is the book that I wish I had read in my teens and early twenties! She engaged me from the first page and kept me really interested to the last page. For a great read, pick up this book.
With heart and using clear, understandable language, Davis reviews significant moments and choices in her life and how they led to a richer, fuller, and more adventurous adulthood. While encouraging healthy examination of potential risks, she speaks to the value of being open to possibilities that life offers.
It’s evident that her healthy and loving parents encouraged her and her two brothers to stretch and experience the joy of living. That she opened her eyes to unexpected opportunities is part of her own choice about how to live fully. She trusted her intuition and opened herself to the wisdom and kindness of others. Life unfolded and blessed her AND all of us. This written overview of her looking back is an inviting view of what life can offer—IF we are open to it.
This book will make a great gift for high school or college graduates. It’s a great one for parents to help them support a non-conventional life. This book is one that I’ll be giving to friends and family, particularly to teens and young adults who are embarking on the adventure of adult life. I hope they will find a rich treasure of experience that they can enjoy both in the doing and in the remembering.

Risking Is Better Than Regretting, Live Without Regrets
by Cornelia E. Davis

This inspirational memoir is unique in that it is a combination of travelogue, as well as a guide to taking chances and living your best life through adventure. The author, Dr. Cornelia E. Davis, "Connie" is a retired epidemiologist who has worked in public health and disease control. Along with her stellar educational and career credentials, she was one of the first black women admitted to the University of California School of Medicine. Because she has worked in or traveled to 97 countries, Connie has had many adventures which she shares in this book about taking risks in a safe manner.
The book is divided into five sections, with risk-taking topics such as seizing opportunities, savoring time alone, and simply having fun in the journeys. She tells her adventure stories in each section, including travels abroad during her college years and throughout her medical career. Traveling by flying, hitchhiking, bus, train and foot, Connie journeyed to Florence, Somalia, Norway and many more countries. I found it fascinating to read how she achieved an exemplary education and maintained such a prestigious career, while still making it a priority to travel, discover new cultures, make friends in faraway places, and have exciting adventures along the way. She described how she kept a history notebook throughout her life, thereby documenting life events and discoveries. Her parents instilled in her early the belief that travel was educational. Her writing described examples of when she found herself in potentially dangerous situations. Connie responsibly discusses how risk taking and travel, both solo and in groups, can lead to the possibility of treacherous or threatening situations, so personal responsibility is encouraged.
This book is an intriguing account of exciting, detailed, true stories about Dr. Davis' trips and treks to many countries through her educational and medical career. She blends in practical and encouraging suggestions for those interested in establishing and achieving their life goals by taking risks in order to achievement personal and professional fulfillment, thus living a life without regrets.

Risking is Better Than Regretting is Davis' recounting of her adventures as a young black female doctor as she took risks and travelled around the world.
Davis reminds us that there is a big, beautiful world out there, and that some of our best experiences come simply by starting. You learn to be open to new ideas and ways of thinking, new foods and cultures, and to trust yourself so you know when/who to trust.
Some of the most wonderful experiences she recounts are ones that were unplanned - ones that happened because she said yes to life, and trusted that it would all work out for the best.
It's about being able to look back on life and know that you took the chance, you explored and had adventures, you were uncomfortable - but you grew and learned.
I read this book not long after the talk started about opening up again after more than a year of COVID shutdowns and lockdowns where there was no possibility of going anywhere or having any adventure - it has been so long that I'd grown comfortable being at home in my small bubble, my wanderlust nearly forgotten. It made me want to get out and live again - to take trips - and have adventures.
You never know where life will take you, but it won't take you anywhere if you never risk anything.
