The Parish family has moved into the village of Redwell. The family has moved from the big city to this small English village to get a new start for a job where Rob the father/husband can run his own business. At first things are going well with the exception of the villagers are sometime friendly and sometime not. At times, they hear voices in the house. James, their son is trying not to hear voices. James goes with two boyfriends to play in the forest. They take him pass a small cottage that is overgrown with trees, bushes, grasses that it can hardly be seen. When James asks about it, they tell him to stay away from it as people have disappeared after investigating it. James wants to explore the cottage but they don’t want to. Why? James goes to the cottage after school and is abducted. When James waits up, he finds himself in a small room, maybe a closet and can’t leave the room. He is befriended by an older man who tells James he has a powerful mind that gives James the ability to control people. James isn’t too keen on the idea. His parents are frantic because James hasn’t come home and people are starting to stop looking for James. Will James go along with this man to learn about his mind’s power? Will he be able to escape?

At first when I started reading this novel, I didn’t know what to think. It wasn’t starting as I expected it to. The characters and their habits were well described. The novel’s ending makes me hope for another book to follow as I do have question that weren’t answered in the book. Overall, it’s a good read!

I'm a big fan of English folk horror - Ramsay Campbell is one of my favourite authors - so was pleased to read Stuart Bing's 'Dark Minds.' The blurb/setup also reminded me of the 1970s TV show, 'Children of the Stones' which I also loved.

On reading it, actually it's not really all that similar to Campbell's books but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

New arrivals in an English village find themselves embroiled in a good versus evil battle in which the son, James, finds himself literally wrapped up in that battle.

It was a pretty quick and enjoyable read.
