Description

She didn’t trust him in her youth, so how can she depend on him now?

Widowed a year, Ruby Roper must flee her Scotland home when she discovers her father-in-law plans to marry her off—and keep her only son. Running to her uncle finds her in an equally undesirable situation, surrounded by silent servants and mounting secrets. Very soon, it seems perhaps The Vynes isn’t the safe haven Ruby had hoped. After all, the last time she set foot on the estate, she’d lost something dear. This time, she could lose something a great deal more precious…unless she’s willing to put her trust in a man she’s not seen in years.

A wonderful feel good story! It’s a novella that you can read is one sitting. Being near Christmas, Hector has travelled to the Vynes to meet up with his sister and her husband, his best friend. Being the only guest there and his host is totally ignoring him, He takes to window watching waiting for his sister arrival.
The carriage that finally pulls up has a woman and young child disembark, which peaks his curiosity.
Ruby is widowed and lives with her in-law’s and young son Pip. Her father-in-law decides he is tired of the burden of Ruby and has arranged a marriage, but will keep Pip. With help from her mother-in-law she escapes to her uncle’s. There she makes a deal with her uncle to keep Pip safe. Meeting Hector they realize they knew each other as children and a friendship is renewed. Of course her uncle has other plans for Ruby. There are few couple of mysteries, a lot of story in so few pages!

Silver Bells by Heather Boyd
Distinguished Rogues #17

What a nice way to get away from it all today by reading a heartwarming romance with a happily ever after. Not too long and not too short…just right in every way.

What I liked:
* Ruby: married for love, lost her family, had a son, then lost her husband only to have to worry about how to keep herself and her son safe. Her choices were limited but she did the best she could with what she had.
* Hector: a scoundrel with a heart of gold. Charming, a good brother, wealthy, a lord, not in the market for a wife…until he was. I liked him.
* Pip: Ruby’s son: a typical four-year-old boy loved by his mother and able to charm Hector.
* Parker: Hector’s valet, an ex-soldier, wiser than most, a great defender, looked out for Hector and those Hector cared about
* Samuel Blackwell: I kind of would like to know more about him and wonder if he had a book of his own in this series.
* That the bad guys didn’t get away with their evil schemes
* That the story, though short, had everything required in a romance.

What I didn’t like:
* Mr. Roper: Ruby’s father-in-law was someone to get away from as soon as possible.
* Vyne: reprehensible and alone due to his choices

Did I enjoy this story? Yes
