Description

Our oceans are filled with fantastic creatures that need our help, and Popoto, the Māui dolphin, is just one of them. Follow along as Popoto explores important issues such as overfishing, pollution, and how you can help save our oceans in this vibrant picture book. Created to celebrate the diversity of life in our planet's waters, Popoto's story and beautiful illustrations will inspire young environmentalists to take action.

The Māui dolphin is one of the world's smallest dolphins and can only be found off the North Island of New Zealand. As a critically endangered species with less than fifty members alive today, it is important that we spread the word about these fantastic little dolphins. We can still save the Māui dolphin! With a bit of compassion and a lot of hard work, everyday people like you and me can work with cetologists (scientists that study whales and dolphins) to educate kids and adults on the importance of ocean conservation.

Advance Praise

"Beautiful Popoto tells us about the joyful life of Maui dolphins and the challenges they face due to overfishing and abandoned fishing nets. Noemi Knight and Alvin Adhi use the charming dolphin to raise children's awareness of the beauty of nature and the threats posed by pollution. I enjoyed the story, the lovely drawings, and the hope that the story gives for a better future by teaching and inspiring the next generations about recycling, respecting nature, and taking action to preserve the environment.

This book follows a beautiful, young Maui dolphin and the struggles that he faces. One of only about fifty of his species left alive today, Popoto shows the perils of overfishing and plastic pollution from his perspective. As an avid ocean-lover myself, I hope this stunning book is a call to action for young readers everywhere. I love the way the author included small ways that every family can contribute, and I look forward to reading more from her in the future. This book should be a must-have in every home, every classroom, and every library.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Popoto The Maui Dolphin is an educative and fun story for children about a specific type of dolphin - the Maui Dolphin, who are almost extinct. There are only approximately 50 left in existence today and to save this breed something has to be done. The Maui Dolphin is found in New Zealand and is a small breed of Dolphin. This adorable tale introduces children to Popolo who is a Maui Dolphin and teaches children in a fun way about conservation, saving the oceans and animals and so much more! The illustrations are so cute and eye catching and every classroom would benefit from such an important book about animals that are endangered and almost extinct due to climate change and more.

Thank you to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for the digital review copy to read. I found this title to be a wonderful blend of informative/educational, entertaining, and thought-provoking. I didn't know too much about maui dolphins and this story had a nice way of situating them scientifically, culturally, and as part of a fun tale. You can not only learn about the creatures and where they live, but also get some background on the importance of these animals within New Zealand. All while "meeting" Popoto as a likeable, fictional friend who introduces us to larger conservation efforts. The illustrations are incredible, and the action items of things you can actually do right now to help wildlife were spot-on.

This is such an important topic to educate future generations about. This book is a lovely way to do that, warm and sympathetic, and not didactic. It's also quite practical in its advice of how there are small changes you can make in your lifestyle that would make a difference to the terrible pollution of the oceans. We have just this planet and it's important to start realising that, and making changes. It's great for kids and even for adults!

The cover has an overall appeal to both children and adults. The book gives many pertinent facts about the world’s smallest dolphins found around New Zealand. It was very interesting to me because I didn’t know of their existence. The illustrations are bright and helpful. She gives practical ways to help the ocean and earth by recycling and writing to the New Zealand prime minister and the US President (although she just says the White House) to make better decisions regarding the oceans.

I was given a copy for my honest opinion.

A cute story about Popoto the Maui dolphin! Popoto educates children on not only Maui dolphins but also the importance of ecosystems and recycling. I think it was a good way to illustrate these ideas.

I decided to read this book because I am an educator who focuses on working with children to encourage better reading habits which helps with fluency. I am always looking for fun and engaging books that make my students excited about reading. With that being said, I throughly enjoyed reading "Popoto the Maui Dolphin." I loved the use of the Maori language, vivid illustrations, and a broad range of important topics. I think this book will be loved by many people whether it be teachers, parents, or children themselves.

My favorite thing about this book is the way that complex topics are simplified for the readers. For example, the main character talks about the dolphins being endangered. However, the term in endangered is not just left for the reader to figure out. The topic is simplified in a way that makes it easy for the reader to understand. The book goes into what being endangered means for an animal, and then talks about how a species can become endangered. This is important because it creates an opportunity for children to have conversations with their teachers, parents, or peers about how to help animals that are endangered or having issues due to climate change etc. I love that the book makes sustainability seem fun and simple, so children don't feel overwhelmed by a topic that could be potentially overwhelming, "scary," or sad. Lastly, the illustrations in this book were so beautiful. I was glad to see diversity within the character because a lot of books lack diversity in terms of the types of characters that the readers see. This is important because you want people to relate to your book, and if there is proper representation then more people will find themselves more personally connected to your story.

Overall, I believe that "Popoto the Maui Dolphin" was a fantastic read, and the public would definitely agree!

Aw, this is such a lovely and well illustrated children’s book all about a dolphin species I had never heard of until now. Popoto is a Māui dolphin, a small species of dolphin living off the coast of New Zealand, and he tells his story about the Māui dolphins like him, how endangered they are and what you can do to help them survive.

This picture book has such engaging illustrations it drew me in from the start. Popoto is a Māui dolphin, a small species living near New Zealand, one of only sixty of his kind left in the whole world! The book begins with Popoto speaking to the reader about how the Māui dolphins got their name. I like this detail as it’s interesting to learn, and then Popoto begins explaining more about his dolphin species, where they eat , what foods they like to eat, and how the pod sings. I really enjoyed getting to know Popoto through the words and pictures, it’s a really interesting read all about his little known dolphin species and worth learning about just from these early pages.

As the book moves on we’re introduced to details of why the Māui dolphins are so endangered. Popoto explains how fishing and plastic are the main causes and I like how this is shown not only through the words but the illustrations which do a good job of showing the sad way these issues affect the dolphins, without being too distressing for young readers. The whole book is given a positive outlook though, about how children can ultimately help the Māui dolphin species by doing various things. There is also a glossary at the back with a few words which children might onot understand explained, as well as some fun Māori words which are used in the book too, explaining what they means and how to pronounce them which I found helpful as I didn’t know Popoto is actually pronounced slightly differently than my brain thought it was.

The illustrations are really engaging and colourful and I don’t think this picture book would have the impact it does without them. The illustrations really are lovely, showing well the way Popoto looks and the various things in the ocean including other creatures and the bad stuff like the plastic. I really love this book for the illustrations alone. Popopto looks so cute and it’s so colourful and engaging, the illustrations will definitely draw readers in, both children and adults! I’m sure many will enjoy the pictures and it really makes the story have a stronger impact. Some of the more distressing images like what happens when the dolphins get trapped by fishing nets are given a cute look too, helping to convey the important message in the book while not looking too horrible for children to read.

Overall this is a lovely read and I’m so glad I had the chance to learn about the Māui dolphins. Popoto’s story is engaging and it makes you want to pick this up and read all about this fascinating dolphin species, and the things children can do to help the dolphins are great ideas too. A lovely read I would recommend!

Popoto is a Maui Dolphin, this informative book with marvelous illustration tells us about the animal, that we might not be aware of. Their near extinct situation makes this book more precious to raise awareness about their need to be preserved. A good way of telling kids to help doing their part to start paying attention of their actions, that can result in endangering animals.

We really try to make our home library filled with important topics. This one included. I will say there are moments in it where I don't know if the age range was correct. The illustrations are great.
