Description

The brand new thriller in the San Diego Case Files series from Sunday Times bestselling author Karen Rose
'High wire suspense that keeps you riveted' Lisa Gardner

Homicide Detective Kit McKittrick and psychologist Sam Reeves arrive at Mary Sherman's house after she fails to turn up for an arranged meeting with Kit's foster sister Akiko. Three weeks earlier, Akiko received a call from Mary out of the blue claiming she had information about her birth mother. Now, Kit, Sam and Akiko land on her doorstep only to come under fire from an unknown shooter and to discover Mary's dead body inside the house.

Who was Mary to Akiko? What information did she have, and why did she choose now to come forward? If her murder is not a coincidence, Akiko's safety could be at risk.

Kit is determined to find answers for her sister, but every piece of information revealed just leads to more questions, and no one connected to Akiko's story is quite who they seem. And there's a major stumbling block: an injured Kit has been officially taken off the investigation, and ignoring the order could have lasting consequences for her career. But how can she sit back when she, her sister and the people around them are in serious danger?

I have read everything Karen Rose has ever written and I have never found a book I didn't enjoy. This series, however, is my absolute favourite. There is always so much going on alongside the main plot. All of the children adopted and fostered by the McKittricks have such interesting stories. This is the first time that an adopted daughter's story has formed the main storyline and I think that made it all the more exciting. There was so much mystery and intrigue in Akiko's story and it seemed that every time one question was answered it led to several more. This really kept the tension levels high. What really added to the excitement of this book was the epilogue which left the hopes that the detectives might finally have a clue to the seventeen year old murder of Kit's sister Wren. I really hope Karen is writing quickly so I can get access to the next book as soon as possible.

I really enjoyed this, great story well written and developed characters and plot. Took me with it all the way. Kit is a detective with a past. She lost her sister and grew up in the system, damaged and broken she is being slowly put back together by her extensive foster family and Sam, a forensic psychologist. When a situation arises putting her foster sister in danger, Kit is never going to let it lie until her and her whole family are safe. They story is intense and gradually all falls into place as Kit, Sam and a team of detectives race around trying to figure out who the bad guys are and what they want with Kit's sister. Tense and gripping, also witty and funny the inevitable conclusion while not surprising is thought provoking and intense. I really enjoyed this and would highly recommend.
