Description

Seeking the most powerful healing practices to address the invisible wounds of war, Dr. Ed Tick has led journeys to Vietnam for veterans, survivors, activists, and pilgrims for the past twenty years. This moving and revelatory collection documents the people, places, and experiences on these journeys. It illuminates the soul-searching and healing that occurs when Vietnamese women and children and veterans of every faction of the "American War" gather together to share storytelling and ritual, grieving, reconciliation, and atonement.
These poems reveal war's aftermath for Vietnamese and Americans alike and their return to peace, healing, and belonging in the very land torn by war's horrors.

Advance Praise

"""Ed Tick has devoted his life to listening and healing, with a particular call to the plight of veterans. His many books have reclaimed what it means to be a healer in the modern world. After decades of healing journeys to Viet Nam, this major poetry collection speaks to the braid of courage and compassion that waits in each of us. Journey with this wise healer and it will heal something deep in you.""

— Mark Nepo, author of The Book of Awakening and More Together Than Alone

""He catches bits of a changing reality in which the past of war and violence emerges as a haunting memory only to be caught up by the new glance of the healing-seeker...""

— Gianluca Cianelli

""These masterful poems of grief, love and compassion, are filled with exquisite moments of sadness and illumination. Such a deep sense of empathy and identification with the spirit of the Vietnamese people runs throughout this tender and compelling work by therapist Ed Tick.

Agony, hope and reconciliation permeate this touching collection. One feels these are not poems about Vietnam, the War, or the Vietnamese people; but rather poems of the Vietnamese people being expressed through the medium of Ed Tick’s keen mind and passionate heart. Love resides in all these poems written in homage to the basic goodness of humanity, recognizing that war veterans of all countries have more in common with each other than with their political leaders.

The deep sensitivity this master poet has for the religion and culture of the Vietnamese is well exemplified in his poem, “Minh’s House.” While walking through Tay Ninh Provence the author stops by the house of a peasant and asks the farmer about the graveyard alongside. After conversing, (Tick is fluent in the language) he offers a prayer to those buried which evokes this response:

“You light my incense,

bow and pray to spirits of those you never knew.

You are the first. You are kind.

You lift the sorrow from my heart and gift me this lucky day.

In the smoke of incense and the rising prayers you and I are also one.”""

— Joseph S."

As a personal outlet for grief and to deal with post traumatic stress, a psychologist to Vietnam veterans, survivors and activists writes their stories in a form of poems. Heartfelt, sad, and hopeful are words to describe the feelings of war's aftermath.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the read.

I'm in tears after just finishing this. Post-Vietnam ptsd told through poetry. Not sure what else to add right now as all the memories are still fresh.

This book is about the Vietnam war and how it affected the Vietnam community and the people living in Vietnam.
Coming Home in Viet Nam is written in an almost poetic manner. It gives the perspective from the Vietnamese people, and how the war affected their lives. We have all seen movies and read about the Vietnam war, but never through the eyes of the Vietnamese people.
This book opens your eyes to what these poor people went through and how it stayed with them and generations to follow.

Although the book didn't seem to be well edited, it still made for a interesting read. If you are interested in history, then you will enjoy this book. It is however not written in normal book format but rather as poems from the writer to the reader.
