Description

A Simple Loaf of Bread Can Create Many Small Pleasures

Imagine thick, luscious dough clinging to your hands while you press and knead it with your fingers. Imagine the aroma of fresh-baked bread drifting throughout your kitchen, making your mouth water as you wait for the dough to rise. Best of all, imagine biting into the crisp crust and soft inside still steaming hot from the oven.

In our hectic modern world of instant gratification, baking sourdough has become popular as a way to slow down and enjoy the moment. While it may seem easier to go to the store and buy a loaf of bread, this 5,000-year-old art brings rewards far greater than anything you can buy. While sourdough requires more effort than yeast bread, it also provides a tangy, robust, full-bodied flavor and a greater sense of achievement.

Sourdough is a great resource with all the basics you’ll need to know to get started on your baking journey. This book contains 20-plus delicious recipes specifically chosen for their short fermentation and rising periods. Sourdough allows you to not only bake this ancient bread but also to appreciate it as well.

In Sourdough, you’ll discover:

  • The history of sourdough, dating back to a Swiss fossil from 3,700 BCE.
  • Sourdough is experiencing a comeback today, partially due to its rise in popularity on social media.
  • How sourdough can be used in unexpected recipes such as pizzas, cakes, muffins, and pies.
  • The nutritional benefits of sourdough, including a high protein content, low glycemic index, low phytate content, and high lactic acid bacteria.
  • How the fermentation process used in sourdough lowers the pH of the bread, leading to better digestive health and disease prevention.
  • What type of sourdough starters you can use and how to ferment them easily at home.
  • How to maintain and feed your starter so you can bake it fresh at any time.
  • Recipes for French bread, brioche, beer bread, and baguettes, including a gluten-free option.
  • Sourdough breadsticks, buns, biscuits, and crackers to impress everyone at your next dinner party.
  • Sweet treats like sourdough banana bread, blueberry muffins, pancakes, and waffles.
  • The key terminology you need to know to bake sourdough, from activation to leavening to starter cultures.

And much more!

Sourdough is a delicious hobby that could become your next passion. Not only is it simple and inexpensive, it is also perfect for developing mindfulness or even to bake with your kids. Sourdough is the only reference you’ll need to get started. With recipes for any level from beginners to advanced bakers, this book has something for every kind of baker.

A good and thorough book about sourdough and what you can bake with it. Great recipes and tips about how to make better bread and other baked goods. However, I want pictures in my recipe books, and I wish this book would have had them. Otherwise recommended!

A BIG THANK YOU to the author, Mary Lo Caso, and NetGalley for the ARC of Sourdough: How to Make Artisan Fermented Bread, Rustic Pizza Recipes and Homemade Yeast. In Sourdough, Caso offers a comprehensive guide detailing the origins of sourdough and provides a complete step-by-step walkthrough of developing a starter and experimenting with new recipes. The recipes included are clear and easy to follow. The reminder to fail and begin again is much needed, as sourdough is not for the faint of heart. ★★★★★

I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I highly recommend this book. Very informative and lots of recipes. Easy to follow. So far I tried the soft French bread and the gluten free sandwich bread. They were a total success and my family loved them!

First of all, thank you so much to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for an ARC of this book.

On to the review!

I really enjoyed reading this cookbook. It is so informative, including the history of sourdough and the role it has played in different societies along the way. The author also gives a very in-depth description of the all of the technical terms involved in making your very own starter. However, she is quick to say that you don't need to use these technical terms at all in order to make delicious breads. The book is very comforting in that it is explained that baking sourdough bread should not be stressful and that experimentation is important. If something doesn't work out, the author just states that we can start over and try again. I love that she sees baking as "you" time, something we can do for ourselves. On this point, she points all of the health benefits of eating homemade sourdough bread as well.

The recipes seem to be very simple and yet very complex at the same time. The directions to make your own starter are very detailed and easy to follow along with. The ingredients are very basic and easy to come by. After you make the starter, there are so many different kinds of breads to make! There are recipes for basic bread, but also tortillas, focaccia, quick breads, muffins and even brownies and cakes.

The only reason this book gets four stars instead of five is that there are no photographs.

I would highly recommend this cookbook to anyone who wants to learn how to bake their own sourdough bread!

I’ve been making my own bread for years, first with a machine, then using shop bought yeast, finally venturing into sourdough. I wish more people would try, shop bought bread is not good for you with the amount of preservatives in it, this is an excellent book to help you on your way

If you are interested in sourdough, and want to understand the history and mechanics behind it, this book is very helpful!

Good recipes, including alternate uses to bread you can make from the sourdough "discard", definitely worth the read!

Thank you Netgalley for the ARC!

A great book focusing on sourdough. I loved the depth of information and the variety of recipes for both bread and other baked items.
The first chapter is All About Sourdough - history, benefits, terminology. Then a chapter on Sourdough Starters - maintaining, feeding, and tips. Recipes are in chapters on Sourdough Bread for Every Taste; Pizza, Pies, Tortillas, and Pitas; Breadsticks, Buns, Biscuits, and Crackers; Quick Breads and Muffins; and Sweet Treats. Other than the breads chapter, probably about 40 - 50% of the recipes utilize discard.
The book makes me feel confident I could make any of these items. I do wish there were some photos included, but the entire book is black and white text.

Lots of good, useful information here. I'm still not sure I can keep a starter alive, but this makes it feel a bit more doable.

I was looking for a book to show me how to make sour dough and this explains everything you would possibly need to know.

The only issue I have with it is that everyone in cups and I'm in the UK so we would use grams. I can use a converter to over come this thought.

I'm looking forward to making all these delicious breads

What's better than homemade sourdough bread?

Sourdough by Mary Lo Caso is a very comprehensive recipe book. I made sourdough bread with starter for years, until I lost my starter because of a cross country move once. I was never able to find a recipe to make a new starter (no internet back then!), so I am thrilled to be able to try this again. I am amazed at the amount of items that can be made from sourdough starter! I had no idea. All I have ever made from it was bread, dinner rolls, cinnamon rolls and pizza dough. I never realized you could make cake, cookies, waffles, pancakes, pie dough, muffins, crackers, tortillas, pita bread and more... Wow! I want to try them all. I can’t wait to get started.

Thank you NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for this free eARC.

A big thank you to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This was an interesting read-I am a beginner, so lots of interesting facts. Enjoyed all the photos and helpful hints. Now if I just had a kitchen-to test these out. Maybe one day. 4 stars

A really complete and yet simple book on sourdough. I enjoyed the history and recipes and suggestions were clear and easy to follow. I'm excited to get started!

Sourdough baking became very popular during the pandemic, and it's always fun to get some new ideas and tips. I enjoyed reading through sourdough, although this is definitely a book that I'd prefer in print to flip through. But i greatly appreciate the opportunity of an ARC- thank you!

One of our New Years resolutions this year was to bake sourdough from scratch - including starting our own starter… so when I saw this book I was really excited!

Great information on history and step by step instructions. Really appreciate the ARC!

This is a very complete book with a wealth of information about sourdough, its history, health benefits, vocabulary. In fact, it is almost a treaty on sourdough. The recipes are well explained and cover the making of the starter and a variety of bread recipes. It also has spiked dough recipes as well as a gluten free starter and bread recipe. It is also nice to find a number of ideas of what to make with the starter discard, as it seems always a pity to throw it away. It is a cookbook without pictures, which is very unusual and some pictures would have been helpful to show how starter should look like for example. But it remains easy to follow for sourdough bakers of all levels.

Sourdough is a tutorial guide with recipes for fermented grain and homemade yeast products written by Mary Lo Caso. Released in 2021, it's 200 pages and is available in hardcover, paperback, audio, and ebook formats.

This is a well written and thorough guide to creating a starter, maintaining it, and utilizing it to create a surprising number of fermented bread foods. The book has a very spare layout with easy to read text and good formatting (bullet points, page design etc). The ARC provided for review doesn't contain any photography or diagrams, but the descriptions are comprehensive and easy to understand. The author writes clearly and encouragingly.

The recipes are surprisingly varied. It naturally includes all the steps for creating and maintaining several different starter cultures, but in addition to the basic loaves, the author provides appealing recipes for pizzas and pie-crusts, breadsticks, buns, biscuits, crackers, and more. We've tried out the basic (no-frills) starter, which is bubbling away happily. There are numerous recipes included which we intend to try. I like the "no waste" philosophy and her recipes for discard dough which would otherwise go to waste.

Recipes include a description, prep and baking times, ingredients in a bullet list, and step by step directions. Ingredient measurements are provided in imperial (American) standard measurements only. Optional ingredients and alternate preps are listed in parentheses in each recipe.

Four stars. This would make a good beginning guide for folks who want to make high quality grain based fermented breads from scratch. I would also recommend it as an instruction text for workshops, activity groups, library acquisition, and similar uses. It would have been enhanced if it included photos, but even without, it's a solidly useful basic manual for sourdough.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes

This is a great collection of recipes, instructions, and ideas for using sourdough. It not only gives some of the history of sourdough, but provides first how to create your basic sourdough starter. Then it moves on to the easier sourdough recipes, providing good step-by-step instructions on how to create the bread. Then it goes into recipes that are more challenging. The book provides not just recipes for bread and gluten-free bread, but dinner rolls, flavored sourdoughs, cinnamon rolls, waffles, pancakes, and desserts like brownies along with many others.

Overall I enjoyed reading through this book and if I get brave I may try making sourdough again. I used to make it years ago when someone gave me a starter. I'm a little hesitant to make a starter myself, but I may give it a try. I've always heard that the older the starter is, the better the bread - and I adore sourdough bread!

Thanks to BooksGoSocial through Netgalley for a copy of this book.

Wow just in time to create a starter and make bread in the cooler weather! This is a well written and thorough guide to creating a starter, maintaining it, and utilizing it to create a surprising number of fermented bread foods. Recipes include a description, prep and baking times, ingredients in a bullet list, and step by step directions. Ingredient measurements are provided in standard measurements only. Optional ingredients and alternate preps are listed in parentheses in each recipe. This would make a good beginning guide for folks who want to make high quality grain based fermented breads from scratch. There are no real photos so that is a drawback for those that like to see the photos. I am excited to try a few of the techniques.

Thank you to netgalley, author and publisher for the opportunity..

A perfect introduction to a "starter" (yes I can hear the groan).

I did enjoy this and found it interesting, wonderful instructions on how to get going as well as what to do with it other than bake bread. A great addition to a baker's collection.

Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for an ARC of "Sourdough: How to Make Artisan Fermented Bread , Rustic Pizza Recipes and Homemade Yeast" by Mary Lo Caso. I was very interested in this book as I was maybe the only person I know who didn't resort to making their own bread during the Pandemic. I figured it was probably time to jump on board and learn more about this area of baking - something I am not at all familiar with. This book was fairly easy to follow, however I am still a beginner and definitely need more time to become better at making such a simple but complex recipe.

A truly informative read that gives you a vast amount of knowledge on sourdough. I had a wonderful trip through the history and the first sourdough dated back further than even I imagined. I had no idea of all the benefits of this bread but there are many. As you continue you are introduced to all the terminology you will need to know to make this bread. I usually try several recipes when I make my way through a cookbook but with this one I'm working on getting the starter just right so that I can have a field day when it is. I've marked quite a few that I want to try and that sound delicious. I enjoyed how informative this book was and am having fun at the beginning with my starter.

I've learned more things about the sourdough and I found this book really useful. The recipes seem so easy and I was craving bread all the time I was reading it. And I loved how there were included other types of recipes where you can use the sourdough too.

Very informative book on all things sourdough! I will definitely refer to this book when I'm ready to give sourdough a try!

I was very impressed with how in-depth this book goes into sourdough. Most I have read skim over the why and how of sourdough. This book gives so much information before readers get to the point of making sourdough. I can hardly wait to have a bit of free time to really dive into the process of making sourdough.

Mmmm! Recipes and Tips to Try!

Like most of the world I jumped on the Sourdough bandwagon during Covid. It was a great way to relax and yummy results. I would recommend this book to anyone starting out! Mary Lo Caso also has an online presence so make sure you also follow her there.

I received a complimentary ARC of this book from NetGalley on behalf of the Publisher and was under no obligation to post a favorable review.

Great Sourdough recipe book!! Not only are the recipes fantastic, but the information, help and knowledge behind making sourdough (good Sourdough) is in here!! Easy 5 stars! A must have for anybody that wants to make a good sourdough bread, but isn't sure quite how!!

Everything you want and more in a Sourdough cookbook is in this book. You'll even get some interesting history of this historic dough. Didn't think you wanted to know the history, well you'll think differently as you learn about it in this book. Sourdough has been around for a long time and has never lost popularity, but has increased in popularity or come back into the limelight since 2020. People were making their own sourdough as they were home during the pandemic. Sourdough can be used for many things including pizza, cakes and pies. You'll find all sorts of recipes in this book.

Other things you'll learn from this book are sourdough nutritional benefits and how to ferment it, which is important. The starter types are also discussed along with maintaining them. If you think of this as a hobby or something you want to do because you truly enjoy making your own sourdough this book can help throughout the process. The details and information here is fantastic, but the lack of photos is something I don't like finding in a recipe book. This one is very lacking.
