"When Things Fall Apart," the inaugural novel in The Kit Hanover series by Alan Brenham, is a gripping work of crime drama, thriller, and police procedural genres, recommended for mature readers. Kit Hanover, a determined homicide detective, navigates challenges in her career, facing prejudices from a veteran partner. The plot intensifies as Kit investigates her first murder case, encountering unexpected twists. Brenham skillfully crafts a tale of high-stakes thrills, danger, and tension, with a compelling protagonist in Kit. Detective Kit is assigned her first homicide case with a murdered body washing up at Marine Creek. The only problem is that her assigned partner, Wade, is openly hostile and makes no secret of his disdain of her Native American heritage. The hostile work environment eventually leads to her reassignment. Kit is determined to solve the case anyway. This puts her in the crosshairs of the killer, and she will have to outsmart and out gun him to survive. This book did not shy away from the violent nature of the killer and the vitriol that hatred shows some of our community face on a day-to-day day. This can be hard to read for some, but I think it's important to remember that Wade's treatment of Kit isn't viewed as wrong by many in this country.

Kit is a rookie police woman who is stuck with a male partner who hates women amongst many other categories. When they find a murdered body that is quite gruesome, Kit no longer has to work with him and begins her own search for the killer.
That is not the only mystery.
A mysterious person going by the name of "Ken" is obsessed with the thought that his wife is committing adultery. He is the "if I can't have her no one will" mindset.
He begins to focus on Kit and her family as potential adulterers he begins to target both Kit and her family. It is a traumatic event and Kit must figure out who "Ken" is to protect herself and her loved one.
While I did figure out who Ken was before the end, it didn't ruin the book for me. It moves along at a fast clip
Geeeeez that poor family!! I don't think I could go through all that! Anyway!! Great book! This book had everything! It had high suspense, intrigue, action packed, murder, mystery, some great police work, a fantastic who done it and some really crazy twist and turns! The storyline was very interesting and had me glued to my Kindle! I highly recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me! This is a new to me author and I can't wait for more from him! Fantastic read!

This is an entertaining book because the plot is quite unpredictable, and despite the writing being a little stilted at times. I also prefer a main character who doesn't act so stupid.

I've been reading several of Alan Brenham's titles lately when this one popped up on my recommended list. It's definitely as good as his other titles. This one centers on a young rookie police woman who has to work against the prejudices surrounding her at every level. But she will not be detered. She became a police woamn for all the right reasons and is determined to be THAT policeman who makes a difference. An excellent character who Brenham has developed an excellent story around, it could not have worked with a male lead. I'm impressed with his writing skills and his ability to make her human and a hero.
