Description

Inspire the next generation to look after the world around them with The Secret Life of Bugs, a collection of delightful stories and engaging facts.

Let Luna, a friendly ladybird, lead you through this beautiful first guide to bug life. Learn about bug habitats – who lives where, from teeny tiny bugs (featherwing beetles) to the largest of critters (giant stick insect and goliath beetles). Find out the amazing things that bugs can do, like flying high or disguising themselves.

Read magical creepy crawly folklore stories from around the planet, too. The ladybug has learnt much on her travels and will be a great guide for young readers, perhaps inspiring them to develop a lifelong love of bugs.

Sadly, many insects are under threat, so the Ladybug guide will be an ideal character to teach children about pollution and climate change, and encourage them to care about all creepy crawlies.

Sumptuous and detailed illustrations take pride of place in this magical book that mixes natural history with a splash of fantasy, creating a book to be pored over time and again. There’s never been a better time to introduce your child to the beauty of every living thing, even the teeny tiny. Following on from The Secret Life of Trees, The Secret Life of Bees, The Secret Life of Birds and The Secret Life of Oceans, Bugs is the next book in the series.
Inspire the next generation to look after the world around them with The Secret Life of Bugs, a collection of delightful stories and engaging facts.

We loved the Secret Life of Bugs, the mix of information and folk tales was wonderful, they really complimented each other. Throughout the book we are following Luna the Ladybird as she explains all about bugs to us. The illustrations are beautiful and helped show the facts being explained. Each topic was clearly set out and explained. We loved the tiny facts.

This made learning fun and was very engaging to read

Love the concept of this book, I’m very keen to ensure my daughter doesn’t have the same irrational fears that I grew up with !

Visually this book is beautiful, it was the cover that drew me to it originally! love the illustrations throughout, very easy to tell what is what and they are all very cute. Each page is set out so clearly and differently which keeps it engaging and easy to digest the information.

Content wise, I found it very enjoyable to read, easy to understand and even found myself learning plus I really enjoyed that it covers bugs from across the globe and gaining insight about where they come from.

To summarise I found it a fun, engaging read and love the underlying message and importance of bugs, it’s a beautiful book that I’m sure we will read again and again as my daughter grows.

I absolutely loved this book. Such a great way for kids and adults to learn all about insects. I liked how they separated the bugs into different categories and were able to cover so many different bugs. The illustrations were so colourful, fun, and detailed. I know my kids will love it.
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

This is a unique and fact filled little science book perfect for schools or home.
I found a couple of things unique: first, even though the book was also very factual, there were also some stories and myths that showed how people look at the natural world to explain it; second, I found the format unique. There was a section on loud bugs, for instance, and other sections that help the reader look at distinct features of different kinds of bugs. In the end, kids can read a discussion on how necessary bugs are to the world, and they can even do activities to help ladybugs. Who doesn't want to help ladybugs?
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this

Thank you for the advanced copy of The Secret Life of Bugs,

Wow, this is a wonderful book filled with so many amazing facts about insects. I love that we had Luna the Ladybug as our guide throughout the book. That is such a sweet touch that we have a insect teacher guiding the way. I wrote down so many facts about bugs that I did not even know about and my science teacher heart was busting throughout the book with all the illustrations and diagrams that were labeled along the way. Not only was there great scientific facts, but I love that a legend was included that told us how butterflies got their colors. I think this is great for cross curricular studies in the classroom/library. This will definitely be added to my shelf at school and home. I have a toddler that loves bugs!

Wow! I thought I knew a lot about bugs (homeschooling mom of boys) but I learned so much! Luna the ladybug gives neat facts, sometimes a world tour, and even connects some poetry as she teaches you all about insects! The artwork is beautiful and descriptive. This is a book to keep and re-read!

Thanks netgalley and Moira Butterfield for a great book to educate kiddos in a dynamic and engaging way.

Join Ladybug on a fantastic journey to meet other bugs of the world. From all sorts of ants to butterflies galore, ladybug knows her stuff. The facts and tidbits are fascinating; I learned things I didn't know before. The short and very informative picture book is enchanting as well as educational. I had fun looking at all the different types of bugs there are and learned about some I didn't even know.

I really liked how this book gave factual information but also included fables and folklore about bugs as fun little stories woven throughout. The set up of the information was nice and well organized. I really liked the realistic illustrations. This was a fun and informational book! A great read for someone researching bugs or wanting more information about the insect world.

I think this would be a perfect gift for any child with an interest in insects - especially since so much of life wants to take away that inherent interest in them. I myself love insects of all kinds, and this would have been a great gift if I were a child again. The art in this book is cute and engaging, and the information is fun and easy to understand - without talking down to the audience.

I would have loved this book as a child, and would encourage it for any child with an interest in insects - or even one without one to foster one!

Thank you to the author, Netgalley, and Happy Yak for providing this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is a fun book which looks so colourful and magical showing us the wonderful world of bugs!

The book gives information in a very crisp and playful way suitable for the reading age group regarding some very common bugs we see everyday.

It gives a glimpse of their homes and how they survive in their habitats. The book also encourages kids to take care about these bugs; how bugs are of different types and sizes. The information has been given in a very fun, short storyline which is always a great idea when it comes to such books on educating the kids about nature and its inhabitants.

Such a good one! The artist is so talented!

Thank you, Frances Lincoln Children’s Books, for the advance reading copy.

This is a great nonfiction book that entertains like a fiction book. My 5 and 7 year old loved it. My 2 year old loved the butterflies. I can also see our daycare and school classrooms using it as a lesson aid in educational settings. As the adult reading the book, I really liked the illustrations and folk stories/songs. I'll be looking to check out more in this series.

An absolutely beautiful book all about insects. Great for all ages, lots of facts and representation from all over the world with the bug inspired stories (though, bug is the incorrect term for most insects as this book taught me)

This is such an informative and beautifully illustrated book on bugs. I have a phobia of all creepy-crawlies. But somehow the drawings in this book make them look adorable even to me. Great book!

Such a wonderful, educational, and informative book! The illustrations are very eye-catching and colorful. There is so much information in this book; children aren’t the only ones who can learn from it! I can see children returning to this book time and again and finding something they didn’t notice before.
I appreciated how easy the information was to understand, and I was thankful that certain words that were unfamiliar had the proper pronunciation provided. The short insect/bug stories woven throughout the book were a nice touch!

We loved this book. Great for children who are interest in the world and want to learn more about the way bugs live and go about their lives. Beautiful illustrations and I even learned some facts that I didn't know.

This gorgeously illustrated book is unlike other similarly-titled ones. It mixes science with folktales. It is exclusively done in cartoons, so those who are maybe squeamish about bugs can still view and learn about them.

The ladybug tour guide joins the reader throughout - and who doesn't love a ladybug.

I especially like how the formatting changes from page to page - the. flash card page was my favorite.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC. I will purchase for my library.

This type of picture book is exactly what I want when I'm looking for non-fiction for my preschooler. The book is chock-full of facts without being wordy or excessive. The illustrations are beautiful and eye-catching and give extra detail to the bug descriptions. I even had to laugh because the book taught me facts about bugs (specifically ladybugs) that I didn't know as an adult reader! That is always a win for a parent. Grab this one before the next time your kiddo asks a specific bug question. . . you'll have the perfect book to read with them that answers their questions!

This book was very enjoyable for my first graders. It was interesting and very unique. We enjoyed learning about new bug facts and we liked that it had information about a ton of different bugs. We also thought it was unique that it had stories from around the world that were about bugs! The teeny tiny bug facts were interesting.

Overall, this books was gorgeous. The illustrations were captivating and even the teacher learned some new facts about bugs. This book was so great that I am getting it for our classroom when it is published. One of my students even said, "I need this book in my house!" and they all wanted more time with it to explore and learn even more. I noticed there were others in this series; I will be checking those out for my classroom as well.

This book brings you on an adventure with Luna the ladybug, where she tells you all about herself and her insect friends.

This was an incredible and informative read. The book has a few short stories in, which I enjoyed. The pages were filled with facts and illustrations about bugs and I think a lot of kids (and adults too) can learn from it. Everything was explained really well and even the more difficult words were easy to understand.

I would definitely recommend this to teachers or parents with young kids or even to libraries who are looking for books for the younger audience.

Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Do you know the difference between moths and butterflies? That cockroaches can hiss? Or why the ants can never win? The Secret Life of Bugs is a beautifully illustrated children’s book, packed full of facts about bugs that will delight and inspire.

The different chapters of the book act as short stories, with detailed illustrations for children to explore. One of my favourites was The Song of the Cicada. There were so many cute and creative touches, like Luna the ladybug’s optometrist report. The images are bright and colourful, and the characters of the bugs jump off the page.

This book is a great way to learn about different bugs, in their backyard, and around the world. It also includes important messages about the importance of bugs, and protecting our environment. These messages are really accessible for children, and include practical steps and activities they can do at home to protect bugs. I look forward to buying a physical copy of the book when it is published.

Thank you Quarto Publishing Group and NetGalley for a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed are my own.

The Secret Life of Bugs by Moira Butterfield

Great picture book to introduce bugs to young readers, in a fun and educational perspective.

The whole book narrated by Luna the ladybug. She introduced us how she was born (hatched out), what she ate to grow (metamorphosis) and even her relatives (various types of ladybug). Also, the book introduced other bugs by category, like swimming bugs, giant and tiny bugs and nighttime bugs.

Along with lovely illustration, young readers can understand the bug world easily. Last but not least, I love the idea saying bugs are important to us and vital to our environment too.

Many thanks to NetGalley, Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books, Happy Yak and the author for my copy.

Luna the Ladybird takes us on a brilliant bug safari!

This lovely non-fiction picture book is laid out like a journey through Luna's world with her acting as our personal guide. She teaches us about her own species, then moves onto others, giving plenty of detail but in a way that engages young readers. Every fact is in small segments and every few pages, the book is broken up by a fictional folktale, such as how butterflies got their colours and the story of The Puzzle of the Honey Tree.

A section on the most amazing bugs reads like the Bug Olympics or DC Superbugs, such amazing superpowers and a page on how the bugs fightback against their predators is a real hit with our little ones.

Lovely visuals and just the right mix of education and fun makes this a great, engaging book to start your little ones learning journey about the amazing secret life of our bug buddies.

We read this book with children age 4-8.

Thank you to NetGalley and Happy Yak for sending this eBook for review consideration. All opinions are our own.
