Rose nearly had a happy ending. She was given up for adoption by her teenage mother and placed with a loving couple. But her fate was sealed when her adoptive father died in World War 2 and her mother remarried to a controlling and abusive man, Hugh. Rose soon found herself locked in her room, beaten and raped by a tormentor she could not escape. This pattern continued throughout her childhood.

When former serviceman, Pat, fell in love with her, Rose could not believe she was worthy. He offered her a chance to escape her horrific home life. Rose happily settled down with Pat, but was haunted by the mental trauma she suffered as a child. When the man who she had to call “Father” took an interest in her own children, she was forced to tell the secret that she has held on to all her life.
