Rose nearly had a happy ending. She was given up for adoption by her teenage mother and placed with a loving couple. But her fate was sealed when her adoptive father died in World War 2 and her mother remarried to a controlling and abusive man, Hugh. When former serviceman, Pat, fell in love with her, Rose could not believe she was worthy. He offered her a chance to escape her horrific home life.
