Description

Perfect for readers of Pumpkin Spice Café, Erin Sterling and Lana Harper.

In Oak Haven, this witch is about to brew up more trouble than she bargained for…

When Scarlett Melrose receives a call from her estranged sisters, she immediately knows something is wrong. The magic at their mother’s inn – and in fact, the whole of Oak Haven – has gone awry, and they need her help to save it.

As the conflicted middle-child, returning home has given Scarlett the heebie jeebies. And to make matters worse, she’s just come face-to-face with charming old flame and handyman, Nate.

When her spell to fix the magic goes horribly wrong, all Scarlett wants to do is flee back to the peace and quiet of her San Francisco flat. But she can’t keep running away forever, and she’ll need all the help she can to solve this magical mess.

With time slipping away, Scarlett must learn that sometimes the greatest spells really do come with the greatest responsibility – especially when love is involved…

This novel is so much more than just about magic and romance; it’s about embracing responsibility and facing the past to find true happiness. The slow-burn romance and the grumpy x sunshine dynamic between Scarlett and Nate were beautifully done, making this story a delightful escape into a world where love and magic are inextricably linked. It left me with a warm, satisfied feeling, knowing that sometimes, the greatest spells are those that heal the heart.

Scarlett and Nate was a fabulous couple. Although the romance is casual almost it is deep rooted in their history. I loved his dedication to her and that his love never waivers even at the end when he says "he won't wait". I could not put the book down until I knew what happened. Absolutely loved the story and the characters. Excellent read.

“In that moment, she knew, with a bone-deep certainty, that this was what home felt like.”

What I would give to be transported to Oak Haven! This book was such a fun wholesome read, Emily Grimoire gives you this cosy New England setting with these utterly beautiful descriptions that make you want to dive right into the pages. Then if the setting alone doesn’t completely win you over you get this adorable second chance romance! Scarlett and Nate’s ‘will they or won’t they’ history as teenagers made for lots of complicated feelings now that Scarlett has returned as an adult.

“When Nate grinned at her, Scarlett grinned back, and she suddenly realized that there were no bad feelings here, just complicated ones, and she didn’t want the moment to ever end.”

I loved Scarlett’s transformation through this story. She is a character that holds so much guilt and she spent ten long years avoiding it. Now she is forced to confront what happened in the past and heal, in doing so she embraces her magical heritage. Even with this I found this book to be such a fun and lighthearted read, from Scarlett’s quirky family, the many endless Earls and the most hilarious ‘villains’ I think I’ve ever read… I really enjoyed it

“Thanksgiving represented everything they loved about Oak Haven, where traditions were honored, where magic and wonder were celebrated, and where the bonds of family and friendship were strong.”

A return to the magical village and another good read. Nate has waited for Scarlet whilst she lived in the real world and denied her witchiness, now she is back. Scarlet is back as the village is failing, themagic is draining away. This book is all run through with magic and spells and portals, however it it a book about family, and being forgotten and feeling left out at its heart. Nate and Scarlet are will they won’t they for years and this comes to a head. The book weaves the magic in well, a few oddities aren’t are smooth such as the time to unravel the end and the unpicking of scarlet’s guilt but the rest is great,

An impractical five-star read, I don’t know with this one, I really enjoyed the whole story, but it took me a little while to get stared as I just wasn’t sure on the writing style at first, it felt weirdly negative, but them the more I read the more I got into the story and was able to put that aside. I think it helped that we got to know Scarlett better, as she was a little whiney at first, I found, and I just didn’t like her at first, I loved her soon after, just not for he first handful of chapters. The learning curve this book went in was what made it five-stars for me, the way they took what they learned and improved the town for its less witchy inhabitants. This had its good points, I liked how Violet was shown and the struggles of a teenage girl in modern times dealing with a mixed-up life, but it also had its negatives as well, and they were glossed over. If you like a cozy witchy story then likelihood is you will enjoy this one.

I really enjoyed this book, it’s the perfect autumn hug as you watch the rain and leaves fall with a hot chocolate and a blanket and I can’t wait to reread this book in that exact scenario. Scarlett and Nate make a really cute couple who I was routing for all through the story!

Summary: When Scarlett returns to Oak Haven to fix its magic, she faces an old flame, her sisters, and a magical mess.

What a sweet, quick, humorous and light hearted read!

Impractical Magic is a story that follows Scarlett and her family, the Melrose’s, who reside a quaint little witchy town called Oak Haven. Thriving off a largely untapped pool of magic entwined in Centuries old Oak trees, Oak Haven is largely inhabited by females, of which happen to be Witches! When something happens to the oak trees and the magic starts malfunctioning, it’s up to Scarlett and the Melrose’s to figure out what is causing it and how to rectify it.

The characters were loveable, the plot was written exactly like a cheesy hallmark autumnal movie (which is LOVED) and it was entirely hilarious throughout. I was entranced by the descriptive language used to describe oak haven, and the imagery it conjured of what could possibly be the most perfect town 😍

A beautiful story about family, love, friendship and just all round girl power, Impractical magic is fast paced and enjoyable and is the perfect read for those ‘ber’ months!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this arc. This book is a very cozy fantasy that follows Scarlett who is returning to her hometown after ten years because something is wrong with the town's magic. The blurb that convinced me to read this book compared it to Charmed and that drew me in. This book has complicated family dynamics between Scarlett and her sisters and her Mom. Also has a complicated relationship between Scarlett and her childhood best friend Nate, with whom she had a will they won't they relationship. This book was a cute east read, I recommend giving this book a try if you like Charmed or Gilmore Girls.

“Impractical Magic” was compared to a blend of Gilmore Girls and Charmed, and I believe it really captured that essence. It exuded a cozy, magical autumn feel with a splash of second chance deep rooted romance. I appreciated the bond between the sisters and their strong ties to Oak Haven and how they all came together to find a way to save their magical little town.
The you have the relationship between Scarlett and Nate that developed slowly, creating a will-they-or-won't-they tension that I found engaging. The only predictable aspect of the book was the identity of the culprit behind the town's magical mishap. Overall, I found the book to be an enjoyable read just in time for Autumn!
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC!

This perfectly cozy read for fall has it all. A picturesque inn, quaint little town, and a good looking handyman that makes the best coffee in the town? Oh, don't forget the magic. What more could you want?
Scarlett hasn't been home in 10 years. But after a ominous voicemail from her estranged sister, she races home to see just was trouble has fallen upon Oak Haven.

This was absolutely quirky as hell and I loved every second of it. I love a witchy small town story and this didn't miss. I did get frustrated with the characters and how they communicated with each other. It got annoying rather quickly with how quick they were to turn on each other. I get it, 10 years is a long time to build up some resentment but good lord.

All in all, a wonderful fall time romance.

Thank you to Netgalley and Avon for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this book! Scarlett is a very relatable character when it said

‘The thought of returning home filled Scarlett with a nausea-inducing blend of gleeful anticipation and overwhelming dread. There was so much wonderful waiting for her down in that valley, and so much awful.’

I got that, I wasn’t expecting the book to be funny aswell as romantic and a little sad, I really hope there is more books especially with the spell Nate is trying to conquer at the end.

P.s shout out for mentioning pippi longstocking too many people haven’t heard of her :(

If you are looking for a cute "romantasy" then you have come to the right place. The sibling banter between the 3 witch sisters is so funny to me and very realistic. The slow burn trope is usually one of my least favorite types, but this author did it very well and the ending was very worth it for me! At points, it did seem the author was forcing romance between Scarlett and her lover, but honestly the whole town was so it kind of made sense why it felt this way.

It's been 10 years since Scarlett fled from her hometown. After an urgent voicemail left from her sister she returns to chaos. Something's happened to the magic!!

Oh my gosh. I LOVED this. The world building in this book was brilliant! I adored the puntastic names of places. The back story of the Earl's. The inclusion of Spam. Everything about this was so cleverly thought out! There was a little bit of spice and some wholesome romance. With a "will they won't they" slow burn trope. The "whodunnit" was predictable but the rest of the story wasn't. EG portrayed the characters so well in this. You could feel the emotions. I did feel the ending was rushed a bit as I wanted to stay lost in this book for an age.

A beautiful debut!! If you're looking for your next cosy autumn read. - then get this on your pre-order!! (Link will be in the stories)

Will you be reading it??

*Note from me: I never want to dim people's shine. It's brave for the author to put themselves out there in the public eye. Books/stories are personal preferences. What might be my cup of tea may not be yours. And vice Versa! Keep on creating!

Thank you Net Galley for this amazing ARC! This is just what I needed to get me into the fall spirit. There’s everything you need…a small, women-led, witchy town, bickering sisters, the will-they-won’t-they romance, and of course, general magic-related chaos. Sure, there were some parts that fell a little flat or were rushed/too drawn out, but this is just a little feel good story that I very, very much enjoyed.

Scarlett hasn’t been back to her hometown in ten years, but when her older sister calls for help, she returns. Oak Haven is a place where the women are witches and when people leave they forget the town ever existed. As soon as Scarlett is back she senses that things are different. Something is wrong with the magic in the town and nobody knows how to fix it. Scarlett and her two sisters, including her mom, try to find the solution. She’s also still having feelings with Nate, the one that got away. This has the small town feeling, magic, witches, family, and love. I think this would/will be a good Fall read.

📖📖 Book Review 📖📖l Somehow in all of the time I lived in Boston and have been back to visit, I missed the exit for the magical Oak Haven and I am devastated. Bring it the pumpkin spice and everything nice because this is a town where autumn is beyond any picturesque, quintessential New England town; and magic is alive in the air. But it’s not enough to keep Scarlet from escaping to San Francisco to pursue her dreams away from her sisterly coven. But when alarm bells ring in Oak Haven and her sisters call for help, she returns to her hometown to face her own demons from the past along with the current town troubles. Between the mystery and the magic is a heartwarming tale of returning home and healing with those you love. Impractical Magic is a splendid fall read with the perfect setting and wonderful characters that would lend themselves to a nice little series if you ask me…

A great cozy mystery book all ready for Autumn. I fell in love with Oak Haven and its residents (and ex resident Scarlett). The Melrose family are thrown back together when the magic in their town starts to go on the fritz. Scarlett has to deal with the trauma from her father’s death years ago in order to help save her family and friends and the life that they love. I only occasionally read books like this and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Impractical Magic by new to me author E. Grimoire, published by Avon Books is the perfect autumn, cozy small town story.
Scarlett is reluctantly returning to her hometown only to learn some surprising things. Time didn't stand still for Oak Haven.
Blurb: In Oak Haven, this witch is about to brew up more trouble than she bargained for…
When Scarlett Melrose receives a call from her estranged sisters, she immediately knows something is wrong. Their mother’s inn has been in trouble, and they need her help to save it.
As the conflicted middle-child, returning home is giving Scarlett the heebie jeebies. And to make matters worse, she’s just come face-to-face with charming old flame and handyman, Nate.
When her spell to break the curse goes wrong, all Scarlett wants to do is flee back to the peace and quiet of her San Francisco apartement. But she can’t keep running away forever, and she’ll need all the help she can to solve this magical mess.
With time slipping away, Scarlett must learn that sometimes the greatest spells really do come with the greatest responsibility.

"In a region known for its crisp autumn air and cozy clapboard houses and pumpkin-spice everything, Oak Haven was by far the crispest, the coziest, the spiciest."

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how I fell in love with autumn all over again.

I could quote sonnets from this book and its gorgeous description of Oak Haven, but I don't want to spoil it. All I can say is that this book has me extra excited for September 1st so that I can throw on a sweater, grab a PSL, and re-read this autumnal delight.

In Impractical Magic, Scarlett Melrose must return to her enchanting little hometown that she's been avoiding for the past few years, after receiving a worrying (and somewhat cryptic) phone call from her estranged sisters. As she reluctantly ventures back home, Scarlett is shocked to find that the magical town she left behind is now in disarray - and it's up to her to fix it! Trying to rectify the magical mayhem that has ensued becomes all the more complicated as she battles with feelings of guilt from the past as well as the reappearance of her old flame, Nate.

This novel is a blend of coziness, autumn vibes, magic, and second-chance romances. We see Scarlett transform from a reluctant heroine to someone who begins to embrace her magical roots, and I loved her quirky family and the slow-burn romance. The descriptions in this book are impeccable and it really does feel like a combination of Gilmore Girls x Charmed! So if you're looking for a cozy, magical read with a touch of romance and a dash of family drama, pick this up!

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this ARC.

This cosy autum book was perfect, had that cosy feeling of Gilmore Girls with Hocus Pocus
We follow Scarlett battle the love for her family, and riddled in guilt from losing her father. But her town needs her and the rest of the witches to find out why the magic has stopped working.

Cosy mystery strikes again with this cute, magical tale. Scarlett returns home after a ten year hiatus only to find the town in disarray! I really enjoyed the bickering between the sisters and I thought Nate sounded great. I absolutely thought Kelly was a bitch and it wasn’t until writing this review I saw her for being the “Emily” of the story. The book wasn’t about solving the mystery in the end. It was about family dynamics. The description is correct in saying if you love Gilmore girls and Charmed you will love this.

10 years ago Scarlet Melrose leaves the magical town of Oak Haven after a tragic accident. Now she has returned, can she let go of the guilt of the past and save the town she called home?

This was a cosy read, ideal for the autumnal/fall months. The second chance will they won't they romance that runs through the story with Scarlets childhood friend Nate is well paced. However, the main plot is the mystery behind the towns magical mayhem that is causing problems, and how can Scarlet and her two sisters help fix it. The characters are established well enough, with scope to grow them further and the Melrose family dynamic is one that I'm sure many reader will resonate with.

The story ends well, but several plot points leave the book open for a sequel, maybe even two. A possibility that i find very intriguing.

I have rated this 4 ⭐, it was closer to a 3.5⭐ but i can only give a whole star and it was worth more than 3.

I received this as an ARC and I just want to say that I loved this book. It was so cozy and cute. It explored some difficult concepts when it came to Scarlett’s feelings of guilt and inadequacy.

Scarlett is a witch from the town of Oak Haven, who fled 10 years ago to San Francisco. She receives an urgent message from her older sister asking her to come home because the magic has gone haywire. Reluctantly, she makes the trek home to discover that not much has changed since she last left. Her mother is still harsh and her sister’s witty, but her almost love? He’s turned into a hunk! This story follows Scarlett’s time back home and she rediscovers her first love and faces the things that made her flee in the first place.

I love a good second chance romance. Nate and Scarlett were always meant to be. And the way he stayed in the grove for a whole year put the icing on the cake. He never rushed her, even though she was hot and cold. He literally followed her lead and would follow her anywhere.

The dynamic between the sisters is what you would expect from teenagers. That’s something that I didn’t quite like. Generally, the personalities would mature after 10 years, but it seemed the sisters literally picked up where they left off. Not the mention the way Scarlett immediately felt inadequate around her mom. Her mother has a terrible way of expressing her concern and love. But not everyone can be perfect, so I did find her mom to be relatable.

The plot was pretty easy to follow and the culprit was pretty easy to sus out. You didn’t quite know the depth of all the treachery and it left a lot of questions that could be answered in a second book, perhaps following the love story of a different sister?

Impractical magic was a fun read, but it managed to tackle the subject of grief in a good, well researched way.
I liked the idea of magic needing the woodland to thrive.
The romance was nice but fairly slow going. I did really like the ending and I wanted the main characters to end up together.

**Book Review: *Impractical Magic***

*Impractical Magic* is the perfect read for anyone seeking cozy fall vibes, complete with a dash of witchcraft, heartwarming friendships, and small-town charm. Set in the enchanting town of Oak Hollow, a quaint little witchy haven where magic lurks around every corner, this novel exudes autumn warmth in every page, making it the ideal book to curl up with on a chilly day.

The story follows a lovable young witch who is struggling to master her powers while juggling the demands of her magical lineage. The town itself feels alive, with cobblestone streets, bustling local shops, and a close-knit community of quirky characters that make Oak Hollow a place you'd love to visit. The author does an excellent job of weaving together magic and mundane life, giving the story an almost tangible coziness that mirrors the beauty of fall.

What stands out most in *Impractical Magic* is how well-written it is. The prose flows effortlessly, with vivid descriptions that bring the magical town and its inhabitants to life. The characters are charming and relatable, and their relationships—whether familial, romantic, or platonic—are warm and genuine. There’s a sense of nostalgia in the way the book captures the magic of small-town life, layered with just the right amount of whimsy and witchy wonder.

For fans of magic, friendship, and heartwarming stories set against the backdrop of a vibrant autumn landscape, *Impractical Magic* is a must-read. It’s the kind of book that makes you want to light a candle, pour a cup of tea, and immerse yourself in its cozy, magical world.

But it needs some good editing and more relatable dialogue and phasing, I think.

Small town girl Scarlett has avoided going back home to her family. When her sisters ask her to come back, she knows there must be trouble. Upon arrival she runs into her ex boyfriend and discoveries he’s her family’s handyman.

With the help of her family Scarlett must get to the bottom of whatever is messing with the magic in her hometown… while catching feelings for her ex.

This was a cute fall read, it gave me the same feelings of how cozy I feel when I watch the show Good Witch. If you enjoy that Hallmark show (and the movies that came before it) you’ll love this book!

Some things felt a tad over explained in the beginning but I eventually got over it. I would recommend this anyone looking for a fun relaxing read this fall.

This book did exactly what it promised. I would highly recommend this book to book clubs looking for an atmospheric fall read. I definitely felt the Gilmore Girls-meets-Halloweentown vibes and loved every second of it. Was the writing the most compelling? No. Was the story light, enjoyable, exciting, a little mysterious, and pumpkin-spiced? Absolutely yes.

Magicians versus witches as the oak grove is under seized and magic runs amok. Can the witches save the town? Will Spam take over the kitchen? And will the two of them ever get together? A fun ride to find out.

I was excited to read this book as I loved the title, cover and blurb. If you love stories about magic this is the book for you,

Scarlett returns home to Oak Haven after 10 years away. She fled to San Francisco after the death of her Father for which Scarlett blamed herself.

Oak Haven is no ordinary place. It’s a magical town that’s not on any maps and anyone who finds it forgets their visit the moment they leave, Scarlett returns home to find magic in trouble and she needs to work with her sisters and Mother to fix it before the magicians take over.

This was the perfect read for the start of fall! I loved all the small town Gilmore Girls vibes and am always a fan of a character having to return to a home that they were trying to get away from! Thank you to NetGalley and Avon for providing an advance ready copy in exchange for my honest review.

Let me start by saying that this book was cute and I enjoyed it. If you’re looking for something lighthearted and cozy, Impractical Magic is a great choice - the imagery used to describe the town and its magic, especially during autumn, is perfect. And so many of the town’s characters are lovely.

That said, the main character is extremely unlikeable, as is her family for the most part. Scarlett’s self-blaming and guilt is too much of a focus and really doesn’t allow her character to develop beyond that. I can’t remember any other descriptors of her, other than this constant self hatred. With that, the family’s resentment toward her is also a bit extreme. These negative feelings seemed out of place in a book where the scenery was so lighthearted and cozy.

This book is also a bit long, in my opinion, and it started very slow. I wanted more details about the history of the struggles with magic, the main conflict and plot line, the magicians, etc. The book really picked up toward the halfway point, but then it felt rushed when things started to get interesting. I found myself thinking that there was a lot of detail in areas that weren’t moving the story along, but when I wanted details about the magicians and the trees, they weren’t there.

Last thing I’ll say is that there were some cringey parts that felt a bit like the author was trying to prove relevance or knowledge of current trends, in a “how do you do fellow kids?” kind of way. Some of the pop culture references just felt really out of place to me.

All in all, I really did enjoy this as a light fall read and I would recommend it to friends, with the caveat that the atmosphere and peripheral characters are what make the story.

Scarlett Melrose is a witch, one that ran away from her hometown and her entire family 10 years ago, she hasn’t been back, until now. After a phone call from her sister basically summoning her back to her hometown to help with the current crisis, of magic going wrong. Scarlett wants to get it over with and slink back to her life. It isn’t helped at all by her could have been something, maybe, one day, old flame she almost had with Nate, who’s aged magnificently in the 10 years since she left. Things go from bad to worse after her fix goes horribly wrong. So can Scarlet actually help solve the problem with magic?

I will admit I loved this book, it was fun, it was a great story with magical mayhem and all those great small town vibes. I loved that the town was a giant secret and had the forgetting spell. The magic system was great, well explained throughout the book and fairly simple to follow.

I will say my favourite bit of the book was the characters, they are fab and actually I think I enjoyed them all even the one I got bad vibes from. My favourites were obviously Scarlet and Nate but I also loved Zanir and Aphra just as much.

The storytelling was great, It is well paced with good dialogue scenes mixed in. I did guess where the books was going and I had my suspicions on some characters, which all played out as expected, but I didn’t go into this wanting to be surprised about the storylines direction. It was a joy to read and in the beginning I really enjoyed the cute nods to other magical books / systems from other fictional works. Such as the title. However these little nods quite quickly turned into something that felt a bit more forced and in one instance there was a whole chapter dedicated to a single quote from Gilmore Girls, I totally get that it was a big inspiration for the book and it’s setting and contents, However I feel this chapter was very much played upon to meet that reference rather than being a very important piece of the puzzle. Another instance saw a very intentional addition to the end couple chapters where another reference is placed. This also felt like it was mentioned to meet a quote rather than nicely rounding the story being told out. So I have docked my rating down to four stars as this book could have been epic without the forced references. While we are on the subject, I have my suspicions that Emily Grimoire is possibly a pen name, although I could be totally wrong, the opening page of the book is her life story and it has a very, striking resemblance to that of a rather famous character from a TV show called Emily.

With all that being said, this book is a wonderful autumn/ Halloween read and its release will be perfectly timed for October 1st. I highly recommend for any romance readers who love a small town vibe and witchy characters. It was very good and a great, easy read to enjoy.

Thanks NetGalley and Avon Books for the ARC of this book.

This is a super cute romantasy with a few romcom and finding your way home vibes. The writing was really nice and I appreciated the authors storytelling style. The characters were well rounded for the most part. The reason this is a 4 star read for me is there were just so many unresolved threads at the end of the story for something not billed as first book in a series. I was left with so many ‘but what about’ thoughts at the end I was sure there would at least be an epilogue but no the book was just done. It doesn’t distract from the story, and if you aren’t the type to care that every little thing is wrapped up you probably won’t even notice.

This book features Scarlett and her family; her coming home and finding herself (and obviously saving the town). Her struggles to fit in and forgive herself featured prominently and was presented in a relatable way. The love interest started off feeling a little one dimensional but as the story progressed his own story was fleshed out and I grew to really love him.

This was a super cute read and overall I recommend.

If I could picture the perfect Fall, cozy read to snuggle up with it would be this book. I loved the chaos and the magic and loved following the town in their attempts at fixing the trouble. Maximillian’s character was so clever and had me giggling every time he changed his accent.

Watching Scarlett and Nate figure out their relationship was so enjoyable. You can’t help but fall in love with Nate’s patience while he waits for Scarlett to figure out where ‘home’ was.

I LOVED the ending! It had me frantically turning the pages, and if you read it you will know why! A whole YEAR???!! Sheesh!

I recommend this book absolutely 100% go get it. And then snuggle up next to a fire and enjoy the calamity that lies within these pages!

Honestly everything I am wanting in my fall book reading season! The witches, the fall town, the amazing character development. I really felt like as the book went on I connected more and more with the family, and even just the people in the town. I did want to include a couple quotes here that I highlighted while reading that just really made this a five star read just based on the writing:

-"behind a veil of autumn leaves, which made a patchwork quilt of crimson, amber, and evergreen" - I just thought this was the most beautiful way to describe foliage.

-"she suddenly realized that there were no bad feelings here, just complicated ones, and she didn't want the moment to ever end" - BEAUTIFUL

-"This wasn't the overwhelming loss of control, -- this was serene, unafraid - like something that was meant to be. As if every unspoken longing, every stolen glance, every missed opportunity had culminated in this single, perfect moment. As if a missing part of herself had finally clicked into place."

Just the perfect fall read in my opinion. ADD THIS TO YOUR FALL TBR! Thank you to NetGalley & Avon Books for the opportunity to read this book.

Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for allowing me to read an ARC of Impractical Magic by Emily Grimoire.

After 10 years, Scarlett returns to her hometown of Oak Haven, a truly magical, New England town whose idyllic setting is now under attack as magic begins to fail for reasons unknown. When this lands Scarlett back in the middle of her talented but complicated family, and Nate the boy she once thought was hers, Scarlett can no longer run away from the complications of her past.

The magical Stars Hollow comparisons are there for a reason! The small town New England, pumpkin spice, light a candle and curl up in a blanket in front of a fireplace with a cozy witchy book and a cat curled at your feet vibes are endless. When that is the easy and comfortable mood you are looking for, this book delivers. My biggest challenge with this book was the family, particularly the mother and older sister, I get that families are complicated and Scarlett made some mistakes as well but damn, it was plain and simple unhealthy, and I wish we had seen more of an acknowledgement and growth in that area.

Oh, I just adored "Impractical Magic"! It’s one of those stories that feels like a warm hug—perfect for curling up with tea by the fireplace.. The leading lady returns to her small hometown, convinced her past defines her after 10 LONG years. But as any mother would tell you, the past is just a chapter, not the whole story!

You can see the happy ending coming a mile away (and isn’t that comforting?), with a slow-burn romance that feels as cozy as fresh-baked scones. The foreshadowing? Clear as day—but sometimes, knowing it’ll all work out is exactly what we need.

If you love tales where characters discover their worth, and happy endings feel like a warm bed waiting, this book is a must-read. Trust me, darling—this one’s all heart!

An entertaining fantasy book centering on witchcraft to keep a town safe from the outside influences of the modern world. Set In New England there's plenty of eccentric and quirky things going on which made me smile. Somewhat different to books I normally read, refreshingly so. I did get rather annoyed and frustrated with the main female character, Scarlett who seemed unable to listen to others whilst keeping an enormous chip on her shoulder. Some romance but totally bonkers most of the time time. Light, non serious read to escape with.

This was a great cozy fall read. It gave me all of the Halloweentown vibes. This book follows a secret town that you can visit, but you won’t remember that you visited it or be able to find it on a map. In this town, the witches are the only ones with magic. If the men leave the town they have a short amount of time before they, themselves forget about the town. There’s a whole magic versus magicians storyline. The town’s magic source is in jeopardy and the town’s oldest magical family has to race to save it. There was a point towards the end that seemed a little silly, but it’s just a small portion. Overall, this was a cute fall vibes read. Check this one out when it comes out!

With time slipping away, Scarlett must learn that sometimes the greatest spells really do come with the greatest responsibility – especially when love is involved…

Impractical Magic by Emily Grimoire is a captivating paranormal romance that I devoured in just one day! Who wouldn't want to escape to a magical village of Oak Haven where secrets lurk beneath the surface? This enchanting tale has earned the author a spot on my list of favorite paranormal romance writers.

It is a must-add for fans of romance with a magical twist. The characters are expertly crafted, with Scarlet and Nate’s chemistry being particularly compelling. While the romance is steamy, I appreciated that it didn't overshadow the plot. I'm hoping for a follow-up book to revisit these characters and continue their story.

If you're drawn to paranormal romance with a hint of mystery, add “Impractical Magic” to your reading list – you won't be disappointed!

Scarlett returns to her home after 10 years, when there is a threat haunting her village and she must help. This was an adventure, there were twists and turns. The story was mainly action, I came in with the wrong expectation, anticipating mostly romance. It’s definitely lighter on the romance so if you don’t want a full love story, this is definitely your thing. Her and Nate were adorable, and with the scenes they did have together it was obvious they’re meant for each other.
Oak Haven is a cozy, seasonal, witchy village that makes you feel like home. The setting of this one is perfect and you felt as if you belong. Everyone is friendly and has a role in the town. It suits the story.
The plot was interesting and I definitely found myself wanting to figure out what happens. The mystery reveals itself in such a shocking way. It was seasonal, warming and always such a fun read

I loved the general idea behind this book. Not only am I a fan of Gilmore girls and charmed but honestly it reminded me a little of Halloweentown! What a perfect cozy fall mix! Also, being from New England, I can imagine the perfection of each season being perfectly decorated, since the town is run by magic. Only the females have magic (go us). People leave the town, and if the men leave for too long they forget. Scarlett was away for along time and beckoned back by her sister since something in the town is wrong, the magic is off.

This has family, magic, community and mystery. It was a wonderful read!

I want to start this review by thanking Netgalley, Avon Books UK, and Emily Grimoire for gifting me with a digital copy of Impractical Magic in return for an honest review. I am so happy to say that I loved this book and had a hard time putting it down. Honestly, I did not want it to end. The cover is what drew me to the book in the first place because it is so cozy, autumnal, and witchy looking. Really, what isn’t to love? Then I noticed in the corner that it said perfect for fans of Gilmore Girls and Charmed, which had me asking right away for the ARC. I am so glad that I have had the chance to read this one before it hits shelves. Emily Grimoire really delivered on the cozy fall vibes.

This story takes place in New England in a small town known as Oak Haven. This town is like no other town simply because it is run by magic. Seriously, there is actual magic in the air in Oak Haven. The town is always perfectly maintained and decorated for each season, and the smell of the town is the coziest of smells. Oak Haven is run by witches. The town is full of them, and only females are able to do magic. The men of the town hold no magic, but that does not seem to upset them because they all appear content with their lives. Anyone who enters this town once they leave it will not be able to remember a thing about it, no matter how much they loved their stay. The town is kept safe because of a forgetting magic that was placed upon it years before, and this spell is in every part of the town, right down to the crosswalks. When the men of the town leave it for more than three days, they will simply forget it along with everyone they know, whether friends or family; their memories will be gone.

Scarlett Melrose (one of the main characters) has been away from this little autumnal paradise for ten years, and she has no intention of returning anytime soon. It isn’t until her oldest sister reaches out and tells her that something is wrong and she needs to get home now. It is not long before Scarlett leaves California and heads back to New England, where she notices that something is definitely off the second she hits the town. The off feeling she has only gets worse when she walks into her family’s Inn. The signature smell is off, just as it was in town. Not to mention that she has been warned not to use her magic because the magic has been unpredictable. Granted, she hasn’t used it in the ten years she was gone, but it can’t be that bad, right? Scarlett soon discovers just how unpredictable the magic is when she tries to move a piano with it. It is up to the Melrose family to figure out what is happening with the magic. It is clear that if it isn’t fixed soon, the whole town will be struggling. Since the Melrose women come from a long-standing line of witches in the town’s history, it is up to them to figure out what is going on with the magic. The responsibility rests upon their shoulders.

This story is not only full of magic and coziness, but it is also full of second chances, discovery, spells gone wrong, and finding your place in the world. I loved the complicated relationship that Scarlett has with her quirky family and the realizations that she came to toward the end of the book. I thought the author did a great job with the descriptions of the town, and it really made me want to live there. I think that the way the author handled the magic was great. I also enjoyed learning about the different witches that reside in the town, along with the sense of community and belonging. The mystery of what was happening with the magic in the town and the steps taken by the community to try and solve the problem kept me interested. The slow-burn second chance romance I found to be sweet (I mean, he waited forever for her) and meeting all the endless Earls made me smile. Once you read the story, you will understand what I mean about the Earls. If you are looking for a story to get you into the autumnal vibes, then please give this book a go because I do not think you will be disappointed. I know I wasn’t, and I may have suffered a bit of a book hangover after I finished it. The story was just so darn good.

Thank you to NetGalley for the advance copy of Emily Grimoire's "Impractical Magic." This charming novel is an absolute delight and perfect for fans of shows like Gilmore Girls and Charmed.

The book exudes an adorable, cozy vibe that’s incredibly comforting. Grimoire’s writing creates a warm, inviting atmosphere, full of whimsical magic and endearing characters. The small-town setting and close-knit community feel like a hug in literary form, making it an ideal read for those who love a touch of enchantment mixed with heartfelt connections.

While the overall experience is delightful, there are moments when the plot feels a bit predictable, and some storylines could have been developed further. Nonetheless, the charm of the characters and the enchanting world they inhabit more than make up for these minor issues.

In summary, "Impractical Magic" is a lovely, feel-good read that combines cozy magic with endearing character dynamics. It’s a perfect choice for anyone looking to escape into a heartwarming, magical world, and I’m excited to see what Grimoire has in store next.

I really enjoyed this book. It has a very fall cozy vibe to it and was the perfect read for September.

Scarlett has been gone for 10 years when she is asked to return to help figure out why magic has gone awry in their small town. I enjoyed the relationship between the sisters, although I believe a little too much emphasis was put on the fact that Scarlett had been gone for ten years, I also enjoyed the explanations of the different types of
magic.

With a little bit of romance and mystery this book is a feel good, easy read. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC of this book.

Impractical Magic is a fun, fall read with a witchy twist. This was such a quick read, I couldn't put it down once I started, they story just flowed so well. This returning home story makes for a cozy autumn read.

Scarlet's conversation with the Uber driver first thing pulled me into this book. I loved how throughout the book they would make little jokes about how no one would remember being there.

Although the main plot was serious the author did an amazing job of making the story and the characters so much fun. I enjoyed that the romance element was mostly a sub plot and didn't feel forced on you.

This is one of my new top favorite fall books and I will eagerly be waiting to see what comes next from Emily Grimoire.

My only con with this book is that the ending felt rushed, the story was built up so beautifully just to end the story with flashes of scenes.

Book Review: Impractical Magic by Emily Grimoire

Impractical Magic is a delightful blend of whimsy, romance, and mystery, with just the right dash of magical charm. From the moment I started reading, I was drawn into the quirky, magical world that Emily Grimoire has crafted. The characters are vibrant and full of personality, and I especially loved the unique magical elements sprinkled throughout the story.

The plot moves at a good pace, with enough twists to keep things interesting without feeling rushed. The magical components felt well-integrated into the world, adding a sense of enchantment without overpowering the character development and relationships. The romance was sweet and playful, balancing out the mystery and adventure in the plot.

If you enjoy lighthearted, magical reads with a mix of romance and mystery, Impractical Magic will be right up your alley. Emily Grimoire has created an enchanting tale that leaves you wanting more, and I’m definitely looking forward to her future works!

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the ARC! and Emily!

I actually really enjoyed this! It was a cute cozy tiny bit spicy fall read. The self deprecating and the family drama got a bit annoying but overall this was a cute story. The final conflict was odd and I feel like the timeline could’ve been shorter but overall I liked this. Pick this up for a fun easy read this spooky season!

A big thank you to Avon books for this review copy!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was everything that I wished ‘The Pumpkin Spice Cafe’ had been last year for me…a whimsical, slightly cliche, small town, autumnal romance but this time with witches and magic!!!

I instantly fell in love with the small town setting and the little references to Gilmore Girls that were sprinkled in; He runs a hardware store with a little nod to how he makes great coffee and should sell that too…and has a sign behind the counter ‘featuring a magic wand in a red circle with a slash, and the words "NO SPELLS."’ sound familiar?

My one negative was that I thought that the pace picked up towards the end a bit too much compared to the start and we jumped over some things quite quickly to get to the end. I would have happily read more pages to have fleshed out these things a little more but that being said, this was definitely an enjoyable and cozy read, perfect for the upcoming autumnal season!!!

Ok so I really enjoyed this book. It was fun and lighthearted and a perfect cosy autumnal read.

Scarlett has come back to her home town after a self imposed exile for 10 years, when she is requested back by her sisters to help save the town after all the magic has turned into chaos. Scarlett plans to leave as soon as this mess is cleaned up, but in the process she has to face things from her past which have stopped her from returning for all this time.

This book includes a slow burn, second-chance romance that kinda felt like a side story to the main plot. I would have liked more of this romance story line as I was left wanting extra detail about this, especially their relationship before Scarlett left as it’s mentioned a lot but not delved into. Nate makes for a super interesting character and the storyline between them flowed really nicely, I just wanted to read more of it and to really explore their connection and what keeps drawing these two together, time after time.

Also, the town of Oak Haven was perfectly cosy and enchanting, I wished to be there along with the characters. The description and world building was something I really enjoyed about this book!! It’s just a lovely witchy super enjoyable read that I devoured super quickly!

This really is for fans of Gilmore Girls and Charmed and I couldn't put it down. It's the person returning-home cosy, witchy book for autumn and is a lot of fun.

I really enjoyed the explanations of different types of magic, as well as the family dynamics. The romance angle was a bit predictable and I think it could have had more fire to it but it was cute - any guy who waits 10 years for someone deserves a happy ending.

The magician aspect was interesting too and I hope that it's going to be looked into more in a sequel. I'd love a book for each of the sisters as they're all such strong but different characters.

If you enjoyed The Witches of Thistle Grove series, Hex Appeal and The Ex Hex, this should be your next read.

This was a fun fall read. The setting is great, Oak Haven really came to life and the autumn aesthetic really came through. The mystery was light and fluffy, if quite predictable, but fun nonetheless. I disliked Scarlet for most of the book, she was very self pitying, and caused herself (and everyone else) a lot of easily avoided problems. I liked the romantic side plot, it was quite sweet but definitely isn't the main focus of the book. Overall this is a quick and enjoyable read for the autumn season.

A very comfy cozy witchy book for fall! I enjoyed this a lot. Scarlett is very interesting and I think a lot of the characters malign her more than she deserves. I will say, as much as I enjoy Gilmore Girls, the small town aspects of this book would have been more interesting and realistic if they didn't feel copy pasted from the show. I already watched it, I don't need version 2.0 witches. But if that's what you're looking for, here you go!

Oak Haven is a town where magic is still present and is where Scarlett's sister and child hood crush reside. People who live here never leave, except Scarlett did just that after a horrific accident resulting in her father's death which she blamed on herself. After her sisters told her that she was urgently needed back home since magic was going haywire, she reluctantly returns. There she has to face her past trauma with her family as well as her childhood crush.

Crazy thing begin happening in Oak Haven like books attacking people in the book store, needles becoming polyamorous, flamingos in people's yards. It is up to Scarlett and her sisters to solve the problems and figure out who is behind releasing dragonflies that are throwing the balance of everything off. While I was suspicious of the culprit from the start, I really enjoyed reading about how it got to that point.

I enjoyed Scarlett reconnecting with her childhood crush Nate. I do think Scarlett was a bit too stubborn, but her reasons were justifiable. I like that they were able to move past the tension and all of the other problems that seemed to be preventing them from moving forward.

This was the perfect cozy read for the fall season. I enjoyed every bit of it and I liked that the chapters were short enough for me to sneak a chapter in here and there throughout the day. The characters were very well thought out and all stood out individually. Thank you Netgalley, Avon Books UK, and Emily Grimoire for an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed the chemistry between Scarlett and Nate and enjoyed seeing both of their character growths throughout the book. I really enjoyed this book! Is it a work of literary fiction that will change your worldview?... Well, no. Is it a cozy fall read that will give you the feels?... Hell ya!

Scarlett - the middle child of three witchy sisters - is summoned back to her hometown of Oak Haven after ten years of living in San Francisco as a "muggle. Her hometown embodies all the elements of a female-witch-driven society, including pumpkin-spice everything, small-town vibes and a memory spell that makes visitors forget where they've been. But, things are going horribly wrong in this picturesque town as magic wreaks havoc on its citizens. They need Scarlet's help, but she harbours a secret guilt over the death of her non-magic dad ten years earlier when they last needed her help.

Honestly, this was a perfect book to read in the fall with its cooler days and darkening nights.

If you like the cozy-fall-witchy genre, you will enjoy this book. I was really worried about starting because I read reviews in which others found Scarlet to be whiny, but I didn't find that at all. She had reasons for her reluctance and lack of self-confidence. All things are addressed throughout the novel. I personally enjoyed watching her navigate her past and move into the future. Her family is made up of endearing but quirky personalities, and they are far from perfect, which I felt made the journey more relatable.

You will enjoy this book if:
🍁 You love seasonally-themed books
🏘️ Enjoy cozy, small-town stories
🎃 Think pumpkin spice should be around all year
❤️ Root for second-chance romances

I will most certainly be adding this to my Fall-Themed recommendation list!

This cozy witchy fall story is sooo cute! I had a good time reading it. I related heavily to Scarlett our main character. She comes back to town after 10 years away. We have our typical family traumas and dramas, second chance love story (although it was kind of secondary to the main story), and a lovely fall vibe. This book reminded me of the TV Series, 'The Good Witch'. Was it crazy complex GRRM levels of convoluted and spicy, NO (hence a lot of the lower reviews which aren't fair IMO). Was it fun and a quick read that had me giggling? YES. It was wholesome and I needed that right now as we head into fall. Give it a chance and go in with the mind that its simple, fun and still a good story!

If you want a cozy fall vibe, this book will hit that mark for you. Scarlett is from a family of witches, but happily living alone and on her own away from her hometown. One day, she gets a call from her sisters about their mother's inn - a curse has been placed on it, and Scarlett needs to return home to lift the curse. Scarlett reluctantly returns home to her estranged family, where she also runs into her former friend and flame, Nate. The curse that Scarlett tries does not work, and while she wants to run away to the comfort of her new city and apartment, she knows she must stay and kick this curse - even if that means relying on those she left behind. This was a fun read for a decent storyline with good characters. The lore was interesting and I loved the magic and spells. This book also incorporated the fall vibe very well.

This is such a great autumnal cosy read, it's low stakes, closed door rom com set in a cosy magical small town.

Scarlet left her hometown 10 years ago after she blamed herself for her father's death following a spell that went wrong until she is asked to coke home by her sister with an emergency they need her help with.

Scarlet not only has to face her family and the guilt she feels but also her best friend Nate, who, prior to her leaving, were going to see if the friendship could become more.

Impractical Magic by Emily Grimoire was a delightful read. I really hope this becomes a series, maybe even a family saga! The banter between the sisters was fun, and there was a great spark between Scarlett and Nate. I loved how the book explores the town’s history and made me feel like I had walked through it many times. The story is open and inclusive, and while there aren’t many surprises since the plot is hinted at throughout, I found the ending very satisfying. It tied everything together beautifully and stirred up strong emotions while addressing even the smallest problems.

The main character does tend to worry a lot and often blames herself, but her thought process was clear. I didn’t care much for the mother character, as she seemed pretty unlikable. Overall, I give it 4.5 stars. I enjoyed the story a lot and will definitely read the next one if there is one, but it didn’t fully capture my heart.

his is the perfect fall escape!

When Scarlett gets a surprise call from her estranged sisters, she knows something’s up—and it’s not just their complicated family drama.

The magic at their mom’s inn has gone haywire, and Oak Haven, their quirky little hometown, is in serious trouble.

As if dealing with her sisters wasn’t enough, she bumps into Nate, her old flame who just so happens to be the inn’s handyman.

This book had the perfect fall vibes!

The family dynamics were super fun to watch, especially as they evolved throughout the story.

And the romance? Oh, I loved it! The slow burn between Scarlett and Nate was just the perfect amount!

If you’re in the mood for a cozy magical read that reminds you of the fall, you’ll definitely want to dive into this one!

There’s family drama, hidden doors with portals and second chance romance. I love how the story unfolds and the challenges the FMC has to face. She has to over come her own grief and face herself head on. I swooned over these characters. If I could slip into Oak Haven and live out my days I would tmrw. I loved it. 10 years after leaving her witchy hometown after a tragic accident, Scarlett is summoned home to help fix magic. The town of Oak Haven has a pretty cool magic system, once a non-witch leaves town, they forget they were ever there. However, the magic is on the fritz and Scarlett just might be the key to solving the problem. She has to face the tragic accident head on before she can move forward. She also has a love lost that she so shouldn’t rekindle… because as soon as magic is fixed, she is outta there. Can Scarlett fix magic and be on her way?

Ok so this was so cute. I had just finished a DARK (exclamation point) witchy read before this and needed something innocent and cozy. This really was a perfect autumn read. A cozy witchy, kind of romancey, mystery. I thought it definitely portrayed small town the way it was meant to be. I liked the second chance romance, although it wasn’t a huge part of the story. One thing I didn’t like was the mom and sisters attitude toward Scarlett, I think a lot of it was unfair and the mom was so mean for no real reason.

I also listened to the audio and the narration was really great. If you need something cozy this is for you!

I picked up Impractical Magic hoping for a cozy, witchy escape, and it mostly delivered. Scarlett’s return to her family’s inn and her awkward reunion with Nate gave me all the small-town charm vibes I wanted, even if the romance felt a bit slow. The magic mishaps and sisterly tension kept things interesting, but I did wish for more of that Gilmore Girls-style banter.

I really enjoyed Impractical Magic! Scarlett’s return to Oak Haven had me hooked from the start—her mix of humor, determination, and magical mishaps made her so relatable and fun to follow. The romance with Nate is sweet and slow-burning, and the small-town, witchy vibes give the story such a cozy, charming feel. I loved the mix of family dynamics, magical twists, and a touch of nostalgia—it felt like curling up with a warm cup of tea on a rainy day. Definitely a fun, lighthearted read for anyone who loves magical romances with heart.

Impractical Magic by Emily Grimoire is a cozy, witchy romance that blends elements of family dynamics, personal growth, and second-chance love, set against the enchanting backdrop of a small-town community.
Scarlett Melrose, the middle child of a witch family, has distanced herself from her hometown of Oak Haven following a tragic accident that claimed her father's life. Years later, she is summoned back by her estranged sisters due to a mysterious curse affecting their mother's inn and the town's magic. Upon returning, Scarlett confronts her past, including unresolved feelings for her former flame, Nate, the local handyman. As she attempts to break the curse, Scarlett grapples with family tensions, rekindled romance, and her own sense of responsibility.
Grimoire crafts relatable characters, particularly in the portrayal of the Melrose sisters' complex relationships. Scarlett's journey from guilt-ridden isolation to embracing her role within her family and community is central to the narrative. Nate's steadfast presence provides a grounding force, highlighting themes of forgiveness and enduring love.
The novel explores themes of reconciliation, self-acceptance, and the importance of community. The small-town setting, reminiscent of "Gilmore Girls," combined with magical elements akin to "Charmed," creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. The story balances lighthearted moments with emotional depth, offering readers a comforting and engaging experience
Most definitely felt like the character development could have been more robust because of wanting so much more with the characters. I fell in love with the story, but the characters could have been more than what was portrayed. I would recommend as a palate cleanser, but I would not 100% recommend this to my book lovers because of the feeling of flat characters.

This was a great mix of gilmore girls, charmed and halloween town. Some of my favorite things!

I’m going to do a reread when it is fall outside! This made me want to be cozy in stars hollow! The mystery was fun and the sister dynamic was too good. The romance was a second chance friends to lovers and was okay but I wasn’t expecting it to be some great romance.

The puns and wit were so great and obviously a great reminder of gilmore girls! This was a great quick fluffy read!

When a spell intended to break the curse backfires spectacularly, Scarlett yearns to escape back to her quiet life in San Francisco. Overall, I have mixed feelings about this one. There were some things I really enjoyed; the sisterhood dynamics, the mystery element, and the overall autumnal atmosphere. However, some things really fell flat for me. I wanted more from the characters in general; they all felt a bit flat and one-dimensional in my opinion. "Impractical Magic" is a charming contemporary cosy fantasy. Set in the matrilineal magical small town of Oak Haven, New England, the story follows Scarlett Melrose, the screw-up middle child who returns home after a decade to confront her past mistakes and resolve a magical crisis.

Grimoire's enjoyable writing style brings the cosy setting to life. The fluffy novel blends family drama, second-chance romance, and a hint of magical mystery, creating an engaging story that explores self-discovery, reconciliation, and standing up for yourself. The book reminds me of My Big Fat Greek Wedding in the best way.

The book's strengths include its quirky characters, atmospheric writing, and quick world-building. One nitpick: the use of "muggle" for non-magic users feels slightly unoriginal, and could invoke negative feelings for some readers. It's a minor flaw in an otherwise enjoyable read.

Perfect for fans of Gilmore Girls and Practical Magic, this cosy autumnal tale offers an ideal blend of magic and small-town charm. It's best enjoyed on a crisp autumn day with a warm blanket and a pumpkin spice latte.

My first Emily Grimoire book and this was so cute and cozy! I know with any book that gives strong Stars Hallow/cutesy small town vibes it tends to draw in more readers for a quick fluffy read, but I think it’s great to invest real emotion and real characteristics (the FMC deals with guilt and self-sabotage and her behavior shows it!) into the book too.

Looking forward to the next read from her.

This was one of my last reads of the year and it was a fab one to wrap-up with! This witchy romance is the perfect cozy vibes that would be perfect year round.

Even though this is very firmly a romantasy, and quite a funny one at that, the romance didn’t feel forced or too in your face. Finally reunited after 10 years about, it felt absolutely perfect.

Rather than some cheesy, the answer is love solution or the type of love that becomes all-consuming. Nate genuinely just believes in Scarlett and this unwavering support drives her. To see the two of them complimenting each other perfectly rather than ‘completing’ each other was really refreshing.

And whilst this does have some pretty cozy, small town witch vibes it also manages to deal with some of the bigger stuff too. It explores grief, guilt and the weight of expectation.

The town is under threat, magic is going terribly wrong - as are all of Scarlett’s attempts to fix it. And the sleuthing to solve what’s going on will grab your attention even if the romance doesn’t. I loved exploring the magic system and the world it’s in. I’d love to return to it with some of the other characters.

In short, this is a lovely rom-com that perfectly balances tension with humour. It’s got a brilliant romance at the heart of it and characters that could step off the page they’re so lifelike. I really loved reading this one!

This fantasy book was a really enjoyable read with a lot to love. The world-building was rich and immersive, and I appreciated the depth of the setting. The characters were well-developed, each with their own unique motivations, and I found myself rooting for them throughout the story. The plot had some great twists and kept me engaged from start to finish. While there were a few moments that felt a little predictable or slow, they didn’t detract too much from the overall experience. Fall vibes entirely with this novel! A second-chance romance in this Gilmore Girls meets Charmed in this magical romance. Three sisters that are all witches. Scarlett Melrose is moving back home with her witchy sisters after ten years. Her eldest sister has asked her to return to her hometown to help her save it from something mysterious. We get more insight to their sisterhood and why Scarlett left in the first place. Her reconnection to her past fling Nate has shown up whilst in the midst of trying to save her town. It sometimes has the feel like the old days without electronics and then it brings up social media, declaring that the story does take place in modern times.

If you’re looking for a comfy fall read with magical romances and second chances, this is the one for you.

“In that moment, she knew, with a bone-deep certainty, that this was what home felt like.”

Impractical Magic by Emily Gilmore is a whimsical and heartwarming exploration of family, self-discovery, and the quirks of modern witchcraft. Gilmore masterfully blends humor with heartfelt moments, creating a story that feels both magical and deeply relatable. I found that it was the perfect a cozy mix of Gilmore Girls and Halloween! It was jam packed with small town vibes, a family of witches, and second chances. Although I LOVED the romance, my favorite part of this book was the dynamic between the sisters.

Such an easygoing read full of magic and the importance of family values. Based around Scarlett’s return to her cosy small home town with an element of second-chance romance thrown in for good measure. I found the characters really natural and reminded me of my own sisters and how different we are all from each other, but how family ties us altogether and we would do anything for each other in a time of need. Impractical Magic by Emily Grimoire is a perfectly playful trip to the cutest magical town, Oak Haven. After 10 years away, Scarlett Melrose is summoned back to Oak Haven by her two sisters who are trying to figure out why there seems to be something messing with the magic in Oak Haven. From there, we get very relatable family drama, messy enchanted mishaps, a little romance, and a small town cast of characters that I immediately fell in love with.

Impractical Magic is not usually my type of book, but it surprised me! A fluffy, cosy book with some small town vibes, making me think of Gilmore Girls. I have seen this described as the perfect autumn read and I wouldn't disagree. I found it to be a good pallet cleanser and enjoyed the focus on family dynamics, though I felt the pop culture references and puns were a little silly and overdone. I felt for the most part that the characters needed a bit more depth, and the main character's inner monologue was very repetitive.

It has made me consider reading more like this!

Oak Haven is a magical town - literally. Scarlett Melrose was raised there and left after blowing up her life. Now she's called home by her sisters to fix the town's magic, but of course it isn't that easy to fix and Scarlett will have to face all her past troubles in the process.

This is a fun, cozy fall read. I loved the quirky town members and the silliness of the magic. Overall a fun book for a fall afternoon.

Thank you to the team at AVON books for letting me read this ahead of it’s release. I don’t usually stray into the realm of magic or fantasy in the books I read, but I’m really glad I made an exception for this title. It wasn’t ’too much’ for me, so I feel like it was a good introduction to this genre for me. I really enjoyed the home-town vibe of this story, it reminded me a little of Gilmore Girls which I love! Scarlett is a flawed and interesting character, she’s funny, broken, stubborn and determined - we can all relate right!? The relationships with her family and friends is at the forefront of this story, especially with Nate, the ‘is he the one for me?’ character! This was a perfect read for autumn, and it gave me that cosy feeling heading into winter.

I gave this book a solid 4 ⭐️ stars. This book feels very much like Charmed meets Gilmore Girls meets Practical Magic. I loved all the messed up magic that immediately had me thinking of the Halliwell sisters would turn things upside down. The small town made me feel as though I was in Stars Hallow. The banter between Scarlett and her relatives had me laughing out loud at times. Scarlett and Nate were so cute, definitely enjoyed the "Williams Hardware" and flannel wearing mentions that brought the feeling of Gilmore Girls full circle. This book was cozy and great for the season. The only downside is that the ending fell a little flat and left me wanting more that never came. I did enjoy it but wanted just a little bit more.

This was a cute book that was definitely predictable but still enjoyable. I think the characters felt a little out of place at times, and some of the characters inner conflicts didn't seem to be resolved, but that didn't take all the way from the experience of this book. I liked the setting and the plot and I want to see more from the other characters. 3.5/5

Impractical Magic by Emily Grimoire is a whimsical, enchanting debut novel that blends fantasy with self-discovery, humor, and a dash of romance. I can't believe this was a debut novel! It had everything I look for in a book - great writing, witches (of course), heart, humor, and so much more. I mean who doesn't love a second chance romance with a sprinkle of magic?

This really is like when Gilmore Girls meets Charmed!

If Practical Magic and Gilmore Girls had a book child, this would be it.

PROS:
Cozy, magical, and heartwarming
Childhood friends to lovers
Charming small-town romance

CONS:
Somewhat predictable

This book is an adorable, cozy read, perfect for anyone looking for the literary equivalent of a warm hug—much like Gilmore Girls does for so many. While the story is somewhat predictable, that predictability adds to its charm, like the familiar comfort of Gilmore Girls. The romance is lovely, but the standout for me was the town itself, bursting with life and character. I highly recommend it for fans of small-town magic and sweet romances!

This was a cute, wholesome, funny, light hearted read. It had magical realism/supernatural elements, fun adventures, a thoughtful mystery, many intriguing side characters, a lovely cast of family and friends, and a dash of non spicy romance all in a cozy small town! Perfect read for the fall and Halloween season.

Cute. Cozy. Sweet.
If you’re looking for an atmospheric, autumn read, look no further. This book transports its reader to a land full of autumn hues and witchy brews. Women everywhere will love this matrilineal society.

While I really loved her subtle yet beautiful trans-representation and the all-too-real sisterly bickering, there were some flaws. Scarlett’s character development took a roller coaster ride. The snark from the characters often felt off-key. And while she’s clearly going to millennial nostalgia, more often than not, it seems like Grimoire just rips off key moments from tv shows and movies. All in all, it’s not spectacularly written, but it’s a fun read.

Impractical Magic by Emily Grimoire is pure joy from start to finish. The story follows Tessa, a young witch with incredible powers but hilariously little control over them. Her magical mishaps and journey of self-discovery kept me hooked, laughing one moment and rooting for her the next.

Grimoire’s writing is both funny and heartfelt, and the characters feel so real, especially Tessa’s eccentric grandmother, who adds an extra dose of charm. Beneath the humor, there’s a lovely message about embracing who you are—even the messy parts.

If you’re in the mood for a feel-good read that blends magic and self-acceptance, this book is for you. It left me smiling and believing in a little magic myself.

I had high expectations for this book but it feel flat. I was hoping that it would deliver on the cozy fall vibes but there wasn't a lot of that. It was mostly a good story with a good plot but there was a lot going on and then it felt like the resolution was written very quickly and everything wrapped up nicely without ever addressing the underlying issues. I adored the characters and the world so I was just hoping for a little more!

I'm shocked that this has so many negative reviews because this is exactly what I've been chasing!! Too often when books are marketed as "Gilmore Girls Vibes," it means the author has literally just copy-pasted Lorelai and Luke's personalities into a small town. These characters felt distinct, with homages to Gilmore Girls characters, but also felt like a unique story. The town itself felt VERY Stars Hallow coded and there were so many great references to lines of the show. However, this also had a magical witchy twist that made it so fun and perfectly autumnal. I can't put my finger on what movie or show the witches reminded me of, but I loved it and I found the magic to feel fun and draw inspiration from a lot of classic witch stories without directly being attached to any other particular cinematic universe. Overall, such a fun book that I would absolutely recommend to any GG fan or anyone looking for a quirky witchy fall read.

I absolutely adored this book. I was in a bit of a reading slump when I first started it so I really dragged my feet through the first 20% but once I got to know the characters and the plot started picking up, I flew through it.

This book is the perfect mix of familial love and romantic love - it never left me wishing for more of one or the other. Although I guessed the twist almost immediately it was still a really fun read and I loved the process of Scarlett, Delilah, Luna and Nate figuring out how to save Oak Haven.

If only Oak Haven were a real place, I'd surely move there in a second!

From the moment I cracked open Impractical Magic, I was spellbound! Starting it yesterday and finishing today, I couldn't put this book down – a rare treat that delivered on every page. Imagine a cozy blend of Gilmore Girls meets Charmed with a dash of Sabrina the Teenage Witch and the heartwarming charm of a Hallmark movie, all wrapped up in a quirky, magical town perfect for a fall escape.

Emily Grimoire crafts a world that feels familiar yet enchanted, weaving warmth, wit, and a touch of magic that kept me glued to the story. Her characters are wonderfully quirky, the small-town setting is dreamily atmospheric, and the magical elements give it just the right amount of sparkle without losing its relatability. If you're looking for a book to curl up with as the leaves start to fall, this is it. An absolute must-read for fans of heartfelt magic and small-town stories!

This book had amazing fall vibes and a cute storyline. I enjoyed that the characters were written with depth instead of having flat characters with little to no backstories. No, we got great backstories and the ability to understand the shifts, the moods and the motives.

I love reading witchy books at this time of year and I feel like impractical magic gave me what I wanted. A cosy read where all turns out just fine with a little bit of romance thrown in. I did feel like I never really understood why the oaks were poisoned nor the motive for those behind it. It seemed a bit wishy washy and not really reason enough to justify what was done. But overall I enjoyed the read.

Sorry for the late review I suffered a family bereavement a month ago so haven’t been reading at all.

Title: impractical Magic
Author Emily Grimoire
Rating 4.5 stars Cawpile 8.86
Release date 1st October

I really enjoyed this book, especially the family dynamic. This book hit me in the feels in more ways in one. When you have run away from your past and it calls back what do you do. That is what happens for Scarlett who left her home 10 years ago when her father died. Now her sisters have called her back.

Let’s add another complication she is a witch.

This book had all the family angst that was needed of someone coming back home after a long time. Sprinkle in some romance and I was invested at page one. I emphasised so hard with Scarlett but also all the other sisters because I felt in some way each represented part of me and how I have navigated grief in my life myself. We sometimes forget others when we need to go through our own pain but it’s okay to.

I loved Nate and how team Scarlett he was, he is so cute I wanted to wrap him up and the friends references as well as the Taylor references this book is a must read as we head into the spooky season.

I cannot wait to read more from this author because it was a fun ride but also an emotional one which had me stop and stare at my kindle for a bit when I did not want it to end in my eyes a sign of a book needed at the time. Everyone go read this book now for magic, romance, with some angst.

Review will go up 22nd again sorry for the delay

If I had to sum this book up in a word it would be fun. It was like The Ex Hex meets Halloweentown. Right away it was clear that the book didn’t take itself too seriously and was goofy, which I appreciate in a witchy romcom. It had great cozy small town vibes with a good dose of romance and genuine stakes for the magic — a perfect add to an autumn TBR. Luna was a really fun character that I would love to see get her own story.

When Scarlett returns to her hometown to help with a curse, all she wants is to flee back to her quiet San Francisco flat. But she can’t run away forever. With time slipping away, she’ll need all the help she can get to untangle this magical mess, discovering that the greatest spells often come with the greatest responsibility—especially when love is involved. 💫

This book took me on a whimsical journey through the magical small town of Oak Haven, where spells go awry, family bonds are tested, and love is rekindled.

The town itself is brimming with a cozy, witchy aesthetic that instantly draws you in. Grimoire's descriptions of Oak Haven and its charming, quirky inhabitants make you feel like you're right there among the autumn leaves and magical mishaps! The atmosphere has a warm, Gilmore Girls-esque vibe, but with more spells, potions, and a dash of chaos (which I love)!

The romance between Scarlett and Nate is subtle but charming, especially for fans of the grumpy x sunshine and second chance tropes. There’s a lot of tension, warmth, and nostalgia between them, which feels real without being overly dramatic.

While the book is fun and lighthearted, deeper themes are woven throughout—family, responsibility, and learning to face the consequences of past actions. It’s a perfect blend of cozy magic and emotional depth that will resonate with readers who enjoy witchy small-town stories.

Overall, Impractical Magic is an enchanting, feel-good read with just the right balance of humour, magic, and heart. If you’re a fan of slow-burn romances, witchy vibes, and finding your way back home—both physically and emotionally—this book is for you! 🍂✨

Impractical Magic is a delightful blend of mystery and romance that makes for a perfect read during the witchy season. While it doesn't fit all the classic definitions of a cozy mystery, it certainly carries that cozy, whimsical vibe that fans of the genre will enjoy.

The story follows Scarlett, who, after leaving her hometown of Oak Haven a decade ago for a new life in San Francisco, returns only to find that magic in the town has gone completely haywire. Books are coming to life, random portals are opening up everywhere, and there's a bizarre culinary twist where entire menus taste like Spam—it's ridiculous, but in the best possible way.

Scarlett teams up with her two sisters and her long-lost maybe-boyfriend, reuniting after 10 years apart, to solve the mystery of why the town’s magic has gone off the rails. Their dynamic adds a charming layer of tension and humor to the story as they work together to restore balance to Oak Haven.

The book is cute, enchanting, and filled with just the right amount of magical chaos. It's a quick, enjoyable read that’s perfect for readers looking for something lighthearted and fun. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more from Emily Grimoire!

“It’s hard out here for a witch.”

rating: 3.75/4★
a cozy mix of gilmore girls, halloweentown, and charmed.

i thought the mystery was fun and i enjoyed the sister dynamics. i can see why ppl got annoyed w the fmc being really guilt-ridden and self sabotaging, but i didn't think it was anything awful. the romance took me a min to get invested and it's fairly simple, but a romantic second chance friends to lovers.

it was kind of exactly the vibe i wanted and gave major stars hollow vibes. i couldn't help but read it in that amy sherman-palladino tone w its quick banter and endless references but with the added creativity of fantastical elements. are there silly pop culture references and puns? yes but that's part of the gg charm.

quick fluffy urban fantasy read, with an added bonus of a diverse small town including a trans side character.

A solid small town paranormal debut about estranged sisters, second chances, forgiveness and magical curses that has Scarlet Melrose returning home to Oak Haven where her mother's inn has been curses and her sister's need her help. As the middle child, Scarlet always felt like the screw up especially when she believes herself to have been responsible for their father's death. Returning home drudges up all those feelings and also forces her to confront her first love, Nate. Full of Gilmore girls meets Charmed vibes and a dose of Practical magic, this was good on audio and perfect for fans of authors like Lana Harper, Hazel Beck and Erin Sterling. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review. I hope we get more stories in this world featuring the other two Melrose sisters! I thoroughly enjoyed this friends-to-lovers story. Scarlett and Nate are caught in a captivating “will they or won’t they” dynamic that keeps you hooked. Nate has serious book-boyfriend vibes, and you’ll find yourself rooting for him throughout. The magical mishaps along the way add a fun and enchanting twist to the narrative. I also appreciated how the story beautifully highlights the idea that, no matter how long you’ve been away, family always has your back.

-Gilmore Girl vibes

-Women who are in control
-Taylor Swift references
-Mysteries to solve (that aren't always murder)
-friends to lovers (with a while in between)
-sister relationships

read this!!

This book is super cute and a fun fall read.

Scarlett has been away from Oak Haven for 10 years. She left after her dad passed away and never came back, that is, until her sister calls her begging her to come help fix the weird things magic is doing to their town. Oak Haven is a town that people will forget about once they leave, because they're hit with an amnesia spell immediately. This way, the women of the town are able to practice magic all the time. Recently, the magic has been going crazy. Scarlett comes back to find magical flies ruining Oak Grove, where all the magic comes from.

Scarlett and her sisters must work with the people of the town to figure out what is going on and what they can do to save it.

There is a love story intertwined in this, but it's pretty PG.. with one scene that would be more PG-13.

This is filled with cozy spooky vibes and hilarious banter! The sister bond from charmed and hilarious one liners from Gilmore girls is the perfect way to describe the atmosphere this story creates! The plot is a little hectic , but I think that’s the point. I definitely recommend this for anyone looking for cozy, witchy , New England fun!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- such a fun autumn read with magic, small cosy town vibes and amazing characters.

🎃 cosy small town
🎃 Witches
🎃 Second Chance
🎃 Romance
🎃 Magic gone wrong

Impractical magic was such a fun cosy read with magic and autumnal vibes throughout.
The writing style flowed so well and allowed me to really get into the book and enjoy it.

This book is perfect for the book girlies who love Gilmore girls but with a little magic added in 🥹

The town in which the FMC returns to after 10 years of being away seems cosy and so much fun. The world building has made me desperately wanting to experience Oak Haven first hand because it sounds dreamy 😍

The love interest/ romance seemed slightly predictable however this does not prevent me from enjoying a book. I loved the cosiness of the romance and the MMC and FMC were absolutely adorable together 🥹 The will they won’t they have their past as teenagers added so much anticipation to this story which I thoroughly enjoyed!

The FMC was such an amazing character. Her development throughout the book is so nice to read from being a guilt ridden person to healing and being forced to confront her past allowed her to grow stronger.

A second chance romance is exactly what I needed.

Thank you to NetGalley, Avon Books UK and of course Emily Grimoire for this EARC 🫶🫶

First of all, I'd like to say Emily Grimoire is a great name for an author of witchy books.
Impractical Magic is such a cosy story. It feels like watching leaves fall while drinking tea and searching in your book of spells.
Such a great read. It's fascinating. The love story is a slow burn but what a firework between them!

Loved it, couldn't put it down. The cosy vibes, the story line, the characters, oh its just such a wonderful book.
Take me to Oak Haven!!!

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC and to Emily Grimoire for writing such a beautiful book.

If you took all the good vibes from cozy witchy fall books and shows/movies like Gilmore Girls and Halloweentown, it would be Impractical Magic.

The whole idea of something being off with the magic of Oak Haven and the three sisters needing to come together to fix it was really fun, especially considering Scarlett hasn’t been there for 10 years.
I also found it really unique that muggles could interact with the town but would have no memory of it afterwards.
Not only was the setting fun, it was full of amazing New England setting descriptions that made me nostalgic for a place I’ve never been.
I love a second chance romance and this one between Scarlett and Nate was so cute. Friends who never explored the something more, despite everyone knowing it was there, has so much promise and this one was done really well.
There were so many fun quirks throughout as well, like the mishaps of the broken magic causing the dining room to change settings. I also liked the fun modern references sprinkled in and nods to tv shows and the like.

Overall this was a fun, cute and cozy read perfect for this time of year. I really enjoyed it and thought it was a great debut novel!

As a practicing witch, I found this book to be the perfect autumn read, blending cozy magic with heartfelt romance. Scarlett’s journey back to Oak Haven is filled with charm, humor, and a touch of spellbinding drama, making it easy to root for her as she faces old flames and new magical challenges. The mix of family, love, and magic felt authentic, like a beautiful blend of Gilmore Girls meets Charmed. If you’re looking for a sweet, magical story that warms your heart, this is definitely the book to curl up with this fall.

This really is like Gilmore Girls small town mix with Charmed sisters. It was a fast, cute and predictable read. Scarlett goes back home to her witch town after 10 years away. Her sisters and mom called her home because magic is acting funny. Together, they have to fix it while Scarlett reconnects with a long lost love, Nate.

Gilmore girls meets Halloweentown in this fun fall read.

Scarlett Melrose is a witch who returns to her hometown of Oak Haven after 10 years away only to find out something is wrong with the magic in town.

This book is super fun and quirky in just the right way. I loved reading about the quirky witchy town Oak Haven, and the Melrose family felt real with their drama. There were also tons of fun references and the author is clearly a big Gilmore Girls fan. The plot was bumpy at times, but I just kinda went along for the ride. Overall a super enjoyable fall read.

Very cute!
Scarlett has stayed away from her secret hometown for years. But when she gets a desperate call from her sister she goes home, reuniting with an old friend (maybe more) and her family. But things aren't well in town. Magic has gone haywire and it's up to the family to figure out why.
Loved the story. My only hiccups were a conversation Scarlett has with a sister while chasing a bad guy (felt toobflippant/humorous compared to how the sister is portrayed elsewhere in the story) and what felt like a missing celebration with Scarlett's "return" at the end.

I absolutely loved this book from the first chapter. I loved that it had modern cultural references in it, although it did make me long to live in Oak Haven. It sounds like the magical equivalent of Stars Hollow, and how many of us wish to live there too?

It definitley gave off both Gilmore Girl's and Halloweentown vibes which also endeared the story to me. While I was able to guess who was behind the chaos, I didn't guess how the problem would be solved. I wished that there had been a couple paragraphs on Scarlett's final reunion with her family and the town, but overall I still loved the story. I also feel like there is room for a second book, which I'm hoping there is because I don;t really want to leave Oak Haven behind.

I am very grateful to the publishers for sending me an adavcned e-copy of this book! It was one my anticipated Fall reads and I'm so glad it lived up to my expectations. If you enjoy cosy Magical realism, rom-coms, Gilmore Girls or Halloweentown then you will surely enjoy this book!

I was so super excited when I was accepted to be able to read this book as an ARC. It was described as having the feels of the Gilmore Girls and Charmed - two of which I am absolutely obsessed with. I can safely say that I could see the influence of both of these TV series throughout the book. Impractical Magic was very easy and enjoyable to read and would be perfect to add to your autumnal TBR. It is definitely a palette cleanser.

Tropes -
Second Chance
Small Town Romance
FMC Saves Town
Witchy
Cosy Vibes

FMC Scarlett Melrose receives a call from her sister from her hometown of Oak Haven. Something has gone wrong - the town has been cursed by something unknowing. Scarlett doesn’t really want to return home due to conflicting personal issues that she experienced while living in Oak Haven when she was younger. She knows she needs too because her family is in need of help. 10 years later Scarlett arrives home knowing she has to help solve the mystery.

Review may contain some spoilers from this point forward.

All Scarlett tries to do is help, but when her spell backfires, it only seems to make the magic in Oak Haven worse. It seems like nothing is going well, except her past fling with Nate. As soon as they find one another, it seems as though not much has changed since they last met. Scarlett and Nate seem to go back and forth with their relationship status quite a bit. It is obvious that they both have feelings for one another, but Scarlett is determined that she is going back to Sans Francisco once the town has been saved from its magical malfunction.

In terms of the Charmed vibes, it was mostly because of the three sisters, Scarlett, Luna and Delilah. Each of the sisters brought their own strengths to practising magic as well as their individual personalities. I think that because of Scarlett believing that she was responsible for the loss of her father, she holds herself back from being so close with her sisters, and more so her mum. Luna is sweet and kind, and always tries to see the best in everyone - she is well travelled and considered a very diverse witch with everything that she has learned along her sighting. Delilah is very strong, she seems to be the one that is most responsible and feels like it is her role in doing so. Delilah has a heart of gold too, but hides under a sarcastic front.

When Scarlett came up with the bird idea, I knew she was going to have to be the one to do it, considering her younger self turning herself into a fish. Scarlett is the type that once she has something in her head, there's no going back she will be doing it. I felt so bad when she got stuck as the bird. The fact that Nate never gave up on her was so cute, but when he was near the bridge those few times and couldn’t hear her was such a shame. I feel like the fact she was gone for so long kind of just got brushed over. I would have liked to have seen her reunion with her mum and sisters as their connection with them was just as strong, more so since all that they had been through.

The description of the town really did give Stars Hollow vibes, I always wonder what it would be like to grow up in a small town where everyone knows everyone. I loved the community aspect - the town hall meeting was giving Gilmore Girl vibes as well. Overall this was such a cute and fun read.

I absolutely adored this book! I didn’t know what to expect and was hooked from the very first page. I loved that we jumped right in to Scarlett’s return to oak haven. Emily Grimoires ability to make this book have all the cozy comforting vibes of fall classics like Gilmore Girls while also keeping the stakes of the mystery high was masterful! I truly could not put this book down once I started reading. The dynamic between Scarlett and her sisters and mother added such an emotional and relatable depth, it was one of my favorite parts. My man Nate though was one of my favorite characters and he helped make this story so enjoyable for me! Love how hard he went to bat for Scarlett, love his unwavering dedication, and LOVE him calling it like it is always. Earl 13 will always have my heart!

This book is like a spooky fall hug and I am absolutely recommending it to everyone!!

Impractical Magic tells the story of Scarlett, a witch who has to return to her hometown after a decade away. The Melrose family (Scarlett's family) have been in Oak Haven since their ancestor founded it, and so they've always been looked upon to solve the problems the town faces. Ten years ago, it was saving the magic oak grove from poison, which worked, but accidentally killed Scarlett's father. Now, magic is on the fritz again, and so Scarlett must return to the home she swore off to contend with her intense mother, anxious and prickly older sister, drifter/magical prodigy younger sister, the grown-up version of the boy she left behind, and a whole town of disgruntled people. Oh, and the nefarious magicians.
It was less than a romance than I expected it would be. Scarlett and Nate's plot was one of several, and about equally as important as repairing her relationship to her sisters or getting to the bottom of the magician mystery. At times, Nate fell a little flat, but he was a likable enough guy. Scarlett and her sisters were well-done characters, and their interactions were mostly well-written. There was a really fun cast of characters throughout the village. It felt like a fleshed out place. Some of the resolution did feel a little rushed, and there were still some loose threads at the end. But as a whole, it was an enjoyable, cute little fall read.

A fantastic autumn/Halloween read. Oak Haven is the town for fall/autumn. Magic and coziness in every corner just make the town work, and make it feel like the perfect village. Except somethings gone wrong. Scarlett has to return to figure out what's causing the issues, however she's been away a long time and left a lot of unfinished business in the area, family issues, ex-boyfriends, town feuds. We have it all.

I loved the small town feel and it was really was as adorable and cozy as described. And the mystery throughout that we have to unravel was quite enjoyable to figure out, even if it got a little lost by the end. I loved the characters, and all the pop culture references to Gilmore Girls and Practical Magic for example. It wasnt the most stand out book I've book I've read, and the romance lacked a little pizazz, i wasn't really invested. But a good enough story and perfect for the season.

Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read an ARC copy of Impractical Magic.
Overall, this was a good book with Practle Magic and Charmed vibes. It was a slow burner and took me a while to read but I got there in the end as I dislike DNFing books.

Scarlet is a witch from Oak Haven an Autumnal witch town where there is magic in the trees which feeds the town. The Monroe witches are the founding witches I believe and everyone looks up to them Scarlet has become the black sheep of the family following her father's death and she has not been home in 10 years. She is left a message by one of her sisters that she has to come home to help save the town as the magic is dying. Scarlet is wary of coming as memories of her father and the boy Nate who she was supposed to be with will be there.
The town's magic is going haywire garden gnomes are packing suitcases and getting Ubers out of town, book characters are coming alive and the protection spell that makes normies forget about the town when they leave is breaking. The witches work together to find out what is causing the sickness in their Oak Grove and figure out a plan to save the magic.

I thought this was a really cute book. It was a cozy, small town romance that was a mix of Gilmore Girls and Practical Magic. I enjoyed the storyline and the family quips back and forth. Nate was such a sweetheart and I loved his character!! This was a nice fluffy read that was quick and entertaining. It read like a hallmark or lifetime movie which is how it could be described as a book. Definitely worth the read if this is what you like. I do think they left some things unanswered which can be frustrating. But if the author continues with another sister, those questions may be answered more. Otherwise it was a good read!

This book is a great spooky season read! It had a cosy feel with a sprinkle of spice. There were some great takes on sci-fi/fantasy tv shows, books and even "he who shall not be named" made an appearance (him I could have done without) but it cemented that the book is essentially a contemporary romance, wrapped in fantasy/pnr.

I loved the premise of Scarlett being ordered back to town when its magic goes haywire. Scarlett has a major dose of Survivor's Guilt/PTSD and the haranguing of her mum does not help. Scarlett and her sisters are all very diverse characters and I loved getting to know their personalities. I have decided that I'm a mix of all three - Scarlett's misguided guilt, Lu's eternal student and Delilah's put upon demeanour lol.

The will they-won't they of Scarlett and Nate continues and I loved the interfering of the Earls and the complete faith the town had in the fact that they belonged together. There is some miscommunication/jumping to conclusions but they are under a lot of magical related stress!

It was fast paced, most of the characters I enjoyed (Mama Melrose finally grew on me, Polly I still have no time for!) The setting was great and I actually enjoyed all the wee links to the modern world.

I really hope we get Del and Lu's stories now!

First things first, the cover is absolutely gorgeous and i was drawn to it instantly and luckily the story within was just as wonderful. If you want autumnal, witchy cosy vibes then this is the perfect book and there is a lovely slow burn romance going on as well!

So this is the story of Scarlett who receives a call from her estranged sisters and immediately knows something is wrong, Their mothers inn has been cursed and they need her help.

She really doesn't want to go home and she really doesn't want to run into Nate, her old flame but she comes to help and when the spell she casts to help goes wrong she has to try her best to put things right.

It has a lovely atmosphere to the story and really felt a bit like gilmore girls to me. I'm a sucker for a second chance romance so i really loved watching that play out as well

Highly recommend!

I thought this book was insanely charming. It is described as Gilmore girls meets charmed, and I can say that’s pretty accurate, sometimes too accurate but it was cute.

This story follows our lead Scarlett, who ten years ago left her charming, yet very witchy, hometown to process the loss of her father, and has not been back since. This left her family, friends and potential love interest in the lurch. Scarlett is then summoned home by her family, because the magic in the sweet hometown is on the fritz and they need the help. In this world, only women can yield magic, and any man who passes through will not even remember they have been.

I really enjoyed this one, I thought the writing was great as well as the world building. There were a few times where I thought that Scarlett was great at magic even tho she hadn’t used it in ten years, that just didn’t make sense I’m summing this book up to a 4 star ( 3.75) but that’s because there was a moment I got a bit emotional and that will always boost a rating for me

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this E-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Impractical Magic is hilarious, heart wrenching, and perfect for a cozy fall day. There are references to musicals in it that had me doubling over with laughter. They were so clever! Be prepared to laugh and cry and maybe throw your book across the room only to pick it right back up again. You’ll enjoy Impractical Magic if you like musicals, slow burn romance, rekindled love, and a touch of impractical magic.

This was a lovely way to kick off my fall reading list. All the characters were lovely. It gave small town gilmore girls vibes and I couldn't be happier. I loved the Nate and Scarlett dynamic. This plot line was perfection and not dramatic. Many novels in the genre have unjustified 3rd act breakups, and I am beyond thrilled this did not follow suit.
Five stars and will recommend to friends.

Male female, second chance, small town, paranormal (witches), contemporary romance. This slow burn had Gimore Girl (hello - the author is Emily Grimoire/Gilmore) and Charmed vibes. It was a cozy pretty quick read. I'd give it a 3.5 but rounding up because it's definitely not a 3.

Another cosy book perfect for autumn. This book has strong themes of family, romance and witchcraft set in a small town in Connecticut that makes the perfect autumn backdrop.

I’ll admit it kind of took me a little while to get into it. I felt put off by the bickering at the start and the choice to include Harry Potter references seemed odd considering there’s a trans character even if she’s a minor one. I think authors have to realise that including such references these days puts up really big “You are not welcome” signs to a lot of queer readers, myself included.

The references I did enjoy were the Gilmore Girls’ ones. This book was bursting with them. With the entire setting inspired by the show, it was only natural to have a lot of mentions, so I wasn’t disappointed.

A great witchy book to read this Halloween!

This is an interesting witchy mystery with plenty of unusual small town characters that bring some of the Gilmore Girl vibes we all need, with a good dose of wacky magic. I was intrigued by the mystery of the magic in town playing up and causing havoc, bringing with it some funny moments and some less funny ones. It's also made me realise that portals are dreamy, because who wouldn't want to step through a door in their home to an exciting destination? This isn't something I'd usually say as a die hard romance gal, but I could take or leave the will they, won't they second chance romance in this book. I think it wasn't given enough time and attention in the plot to truly develop, and relied more on these characters' history than their present, but since I was happily enjoying a nice autumnal witchy read anyway, it isn't a dealbreaker for me in this book. I would say that I felt bad for Scarlett that the people closest to her weren't far more welcoming, and I know I would have bounced right back out of town if that was my reception! Her sisters, or more Del really, was a bit irritating as a character but I thought everyone else was interesting and worked well into the story.

I received a free copy of this book. All views are my own.

This was definitely an autumnal read, advertised as Gilmore Girls meets practical magic I'd say that's pretty much spot on, this is the equivalent of a hot chocolate on a cold winters day, comforting and throughly enjoyable, second chance romance was a surprise and loved the pop culture references throughout

Impractical Magic by Emily Grimoire is a charming, witchy novel with cozy autumn vibes, it is perfect for fans of small-town mysteries with a magical twist. This novel is set in the town of Oak Haven, the story follows Scarlett Melrose, who returns home after a decade away to help her family fix the town’s wayward magic. The town itself is steeped in magic, but something has gone terribly wrong, leading to unpredictable spells and a crisis that Scarlett and her sisters must resolve.

Scarlett’s complicated relationship with her estranged family and her old flame, Nate, adds depth to the narrative, while the town's whimsical, enchanted atmosphere gives it a cozy, autumnal feel. The magic system, involving witch families like the Melroses, feels well thought-out, and the novel blends lighthearted humor, romance, and mystery. This is a fun easy-to-read style and the warm homey setting makes it a wonderful choice for fall-themed reading lists.

Overall, while some parts felt a little rushed toward the end, Impractical Magic is an enjoyable, feel-good novel that is perfect for the fall/spooky season

I'm giving this 3.5-4 stars based on the little I was able to read. The story sounds like something I'd really enjoy, and I would love to read a finished copy, but I ultimately had to set this one aside because the formatting on my copy was super weird! All the paragraphs ran together, even with fiddling on my kindle settings, and it was visually hard to deal with. My star rating is based on what I did read added to where I expected the story to go.

I loved this book. It was exactly what I needed! The autumnal witchy vibes were everything I wanted and more. I loved the little town that no one would remember but that Luna has travelled so many different places.

I think her relationship worked out well but it always led back to some form of miscommunication which wasn’t my favourite

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend to everyone!!

GIVE ME ALL THE FALL VIBES. This was such a cute read. It's a prefect debut from Emily, and during my favorite season of the year. It had all the things that I love in a book: small town, grumpy x sunshine, second chance romance. What more can you ask for.

Scarlett's back, after being away for ten years. She's tasked with 1)finding a solution to the Inn's and town's magic problem 2)if she wants to be with Nate. Along the way a lot of drama happens, both with her family and the towns people. At the end of the day, Scarlett's grown from the beginning of the book to the end of the book - and that's all I could ask for.

Welcome to Oak Haven, where the leaves are always golden, the coffee is eternally spiced, and there’s just a bit more magic in the air than anyone wants to admit.

If Gilmore Girls had a magical baby with Charmed, you’d get Impractical Magic, a swoony, witchy second chance romance that feels like wrapping yourself in a cozy, enchanted blanket.

Scarlett Melrose, our reluctant middle child witch, is called back to the small town she’s been avoiding like the plague. And for good reason, her family’s inn is cursed, and her estranged sisters need her help. Cue the magic, the sibling drama, and oh, did I mention the ex-boyfriend handyman situation? Yep, Nate, the gruff yet charming guy who’s apparently been fixing more than just the inn’s leaky roof while Scarlett’s been off in San Francisco, is very much still in town…and very much still good with his hands.

But when Scarlett’s first attempt at breaking the curse backfires, causing more chaos than a black cat on Halloween, she realises she might need Nate’s help (ugh). As much as she’d rather escape back to her spell-free life in the city, Scarlett is forced to confront not only the curse but the emotions she’s tried to bury. It turns out that Oak Haven’s not the only thing with a complicated history—her heart’s got a few tangles, too.

With a perfect blend of grumpy x sunshine energy (seriously, Scarlett’s snark vs. Nate’s low-key charm is chef’s kiss), a slow burn romance that will keep you hooked, and a town that feels like it’s straight out of an autumn dream, Impractical Magic is the perfect cozy read. It’s got all the witchy aesthetics you crave, bubbling cauldrons, moonlit spells, and a touch of whoops, did I just summon something weird? alongside a heartfelt story of family, forgiveness, and finding your way back home, both literally and emotionally.

Emily Grimoire’s writing is as light and warm as a pumpkin spice latte, with just enough magical mishaps to keep you laughing (and swooning) along the way.

The town of Oak Haven feels alive with its quirky residents and charming, small town vibe. Seriously, you’ll want to move in and start your own magical candle shop by the end of this book.

This was a cute, cozy, rom-com fantasy, with witchy elements and a light magic system. It honestly gave Charmed vibes with the one sister moving away for some time due to a catastrophic accident and being asked to return home to assist the family with town troubles.

Very cozy friends to lovers small town romance.

I loved Scar! This book was so cute and well put together, each page made me want to keep reading to find out what happened. I could picture the Oak Haven and people in it, I could almost smell the pumpkin and spice. The way Emily used each chapter to give us a bit more of Scarletts history was fun, I enjoyed that you could picture her as a child in the town and as a young woman finding her way before she left. I love the way Nate came into the story and was her right-hand man, how she had the push and pull with him in the relationship gave us the perfect conflict to love. I cant wait to see what Emily comes out with next, I've followed her on good reads for the next book!

What a cute little read!

I loved the cosy vibes from this, perfect for the time of year.

So much mischief and magic gone wrong, whilst serious for the characters, it made for some funny scenarios.

Scarlett kept putting her foot in it and making things worse but she was so funny.

The romance was cute and developed well. Kind of "it's always been you" vibes.

I really did enjoy this. Just a nice light-hearted, comfort read.

This book was packed with cosy witchy vibes! Oak Haven sounds like an absolute dream especially in autumn! Full of interesting characters, lots of back story details and fun anecdotes it felt like you really knew the village. ⁣

I loved the magical mishaps going on. Especially the gnomes that packed their bags and left ⁣

This book definitely has a refreshing modern twist. So many witchy books tend to be historically. I loved the topical references, like the spell that tells you which streaming service a program is on! And the introduction of mobile phones to the village which caused a big stir. ⁣

You could definitely feel the tension in the Melrose family. I did think they were particularly harsh towards Scarlett and used her past mistakes against her a little too often! ⁣

Overall a wonderful seasonal read with lots of lovely magical moments 🥰
