On the eve of her twentieth birthday, Genevieve is taken aback by a shocking revelation: her parents have arranged a marriage for her. However, there’s a twist - they insist she pretends to be three years younger, fearing that she may not attract the most affluent suitors now that she’s past her teens. Initially hesitant to resort to deception for her future, Genevieve becomes enchanted by the charisma and charm of Hugh McKinley, her soon-to-be husband, and agrees to her parents’ demand to maintain his interest.
As she steps through the doors of the McKinley Estate for the first time, the young headmistress is filled with excitement, marveling at the breathtaking beauty of her new surroundings. However, as Genevieve settles into her new life, she notices disturbing occurrences within the mansion’s chilly corridors. As she delves deeper into her quest for the truth, the once majestic manor swiftly transforms into a realm of terror, where unimaginable horrors beyond her darkest nightmares are brought to light.

I loved the idea of a historical fiction novel with a horror element, and this was such a strong concept in the genres. The overall feel worked well with the concept and was invested in what was going on. The characters had that overall feel and was hooked from beginning to end. Gitte Tamar has that element that I was looking for and glad I got to read this.
Thank you NetGalley, the publisher and the author for this ARC! A great read for the start of spooky season. I love the illustrations throughout.

This kept me on the edge of my seat! My mind, like the MC, kept racing with questions and a creeping sense of dread and unease. The reveal in the end about who Hugh really was shocked me. I can't read/turn the pages fast enough to find out how Genevieve is going to escape the mayhem and madness. I liked it way more than I expected and was highly entertained.
Happy Publication day! (Oct 1, 2024)
