Description
Q: Who wanted Billie Ransom dead?
A: Who didn’t?
A writers’ group hires Cat Caliban to investigate the hit-and-run death of their most successful — and least popular — member. A young novelist and college professor, Billie Ransom has recently won the coveted contract to write the sequel to acclaimed bestseller THE FAR HORIZON when she’s struck and killed while out for a run one icy morning. Cat’s not convinced it’s murder, but her preliminary investigations identify a host of potential suspects, from rivals to disgruntled students to irate models for Ransom’s thinly disguised characters. Cat is forced to admit that if she’d known the writer, she might have wanted to murder Billie herself. Meanwhile, the group members are eager to help with the investigation and thrilled to be considered suspects. Cat tries to keep them out of trouble while walking in the dead woman’s footsteps to find out what Billie knew. But can she evade Billie’s fate?

This is set in the 1980s.
The author/professor was a self-absorbed know-it-all who was almost universally disliked. But that wasn't a good enough reason to do a hit and run over her at 0630. Now the writers group assumes the task of investigating a death which law enforcement thinks is accidental but Cat Caliban PI/writer believes to be otherwise. It's complicated by money, greed, lies, secretiveness, theft, and a growing collection of suspects. Every time they think they have a lead, it turns into a red herring and when least expected, a plot twist is there to make Cat and reader go nutz. Another fun brain teaser in a great series I've been following for ages!

This was a strong tenth entry in the Cat Caliban Mystery series, it had everything that I was looking for from the previous nine books. The characters had that element that I wanted and enjoyed the overall feel of this in this continuation. D. B. Borton wrote this well and was glad I got to read this.
In this 1980s-set mystery, a disliked professor’s hit-and-run death seems like an open-and-shut case—until PI Cat Caliban gets involved. What initially looks like an accident soon unravels into a tangled web of deception, secrets, and greed. As Cat and her writers’ group dig deeper, they’re led down one false trail after another, with each clue leading to more questions and surprising plot twists. The suspense is relentless, keeping both Cat and the reader on their toes. Another captivating and unpredictable entry in a series that continues to impress!
