Brilliant brilliant brilliant, intense, thrilling and unputdownable. Did guess who was doing the killing but really didn't detract from who intriguing this book is. Fantastic.Thank you netgalley for the advanced copy

Firstly i have to say i simply love DS Lively.
Great gory storyline and well written characters.
I read this far to quickly, its a real edgy read.
My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my copy.

I was completely blown away by this book it was sheer brilliance! I love books that grab you from the beginning and hold on so tightly that you cannot put the book down.
I was hooked from the start and couldn’t stop turning pages long into the night. There were plenty of twists and turns to keep me holding on… it was truly wonderful!

When a new Helen Fields book drops, all other reading plans fly out of the window.
Watching You features Dr Connie Woolwine and Brodie Baarda, back in Edinburgh to assist on what proves to be a very intense and complex case. Dr Beth Waterfall, a surgeon, is enduring a torrid time, still grieving for her daughter. A chain of seemingly unconnected, very unnatural deaths, bring her in to the investigation; which is a dangerous place to be. As the body count keeps rising, the pressure to find who is responsible ramps up.
I thoroughly enjoyed the writing, the plot held me gripped tightly, and the pace kept up throughout. The characters are well developed, the highly unpleasant, unnerving one getting under my skin. Just the thought of them makes your skin prickle. I really enjoyed touching base with Midnight, Dawn and Doris again.
I love Connie’s character. To say that she takes a very hands on approach to her profiling, is an understatement. The interactions, and verbal exchanges between Connie, and some of the other characters, were so well written and entertaining. I was cheering her on. If there were more women like her in positions of authority, our world wouldn’t be in the dire straits it currently is.
There is so much to unpack in this book, and when you think you have processed everything, the author throws more twists and turns at you. As I neared the end of the book, my heart broke, for many of the characters.
Watching You is chilling, and unputdownable. It’s a highly recommended 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read. I raced through it in 48 hours, and sadly have to wait patiently for whatever Helen writes next.

Wow! I have read *almost* all of Helen Fields books so I knew I wasn't going to be disappointed.
This is set in Edinburgh, following a major incident team investigating bodies that have no obvious link.
Fields’ writing is sharp and atmospheric, drawing you into the unsettling world of both the investigators and the perpetrator. The plot is well-constructed, with twists that keep you guessing and moments of genuine suspense that are hard to shake.
This book is amazing and I would highly recommend it!
📚I was able to read an advanced copy of title thanks to NetGalley, Helen Fields and Avon Books UK 📚
📚All reviews and opinions are entirely my own📚

I absolutely loved this latest, grizzly offering from Fields and I admit to devouring this in one session. We have our recurring characters in the form of Salter, Overbeck, Lively Connie and Brodie, I always like this aspect and getting to see the character developments is enjoyable. In this one, Lively really takes centre stage which was nice to see and his development really helped flesh out his character. The other characters are all strong as well, they all play their role exquisitely. The return of Connie and Brodie provides a different aspect to your usual crime reads, whilst I think some of their behaviour is out there, it is certainly interesting and moves the plot along.
As always, this is a gruesome, explicit read so this is not one for the faint hearted. However, the plot is so much more than that, it is incredibly dramatic and I was full of adrenaline the whole way through, not knowing where the next danger and twist was coming from. This also has a lot of emotion throughout the book, mainly down to Beth and her daughter, Molly's story. It made a crime read a lot more realistic and meant I was really rooting for the police investigation.
There are some very surprising aspects to this plot, which I will not detail but I ended up finding this a remarkable, fascinating read and one that I will remember for a very long time.
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for an advance copy.

When I say I’m a fan of Helen Fields’ books, I mean it.
I’ve read all of her series thrillers, the standalones and the legal thriller Degrees Of Guilt. My absolute favourites are the darkest thrillers which Helen Fields writes so well, The Profiler and some of the Perfect series.
I enjoy the Connie Woolwine series, the quirky psychological profiler is a great character and the books feel like a flight of fancy where anything can happen, and probably will.
There’s a k*ller on the loose, multiple victims with no connection, k*lled in wide variety of ways. There’s a great cast of characters both returning from the previous books and from The Profiler. It’s a very entertaining story with plenty going on, actual jump scare shocks, and plenty of twists.
Sometimes you read a book by a favourite author and it really makes you appreciate the depth and variety of their work. This is one of those books. Lots of fun and thoroughly enjoyable.

This looks like a big hit for Helen Fields in my opinion, packed full of twists and turns that I didn't always see coming. It's absolutely gripping!

Review of ‘Watching You’ by Helen Fields, due to be published on 28 August 2025 by Avon Books UK.
Police Scotland have a job on their hands when bodies start to show up, each having been murdered in horrific circumstances. The Major Investigation Team seek help from Dr Woolwine, who connects with the victims to try and establish motives and catch the killer.
This is an intense thriller, extremely well written characters, excellent detailing, full of suspense and pulls you in from the very first page.
I’d not read any of Helen Fields’ novels previously, but this will certainly not be my last. An outstanding read and highly recommended.

Another outstanding thriller from this author.
Very quirky characters and a devilishly twisty plot.
Plus a hint that AVa and Luc might be returning !

Edinburgh is a city in the grip of terror as a serial killer works his way through multiple victims. In the midst of it all, a brilliant surgeon mourns the loss of her child. But it looks as if the killer of Beth Waterfall's daughter is planning to come for her too...
Can the besieged police forces of the city solve the mystery in time to save Beth - and all the other victims that the killer is likely to target in the months ahead?
Gripping and atmospheric, this fast paced thriller effortlessly holds the reader's attention. This one is not to be missed. It gets 3.5 stars.

WATCHING YOU has been sitting in my "currently reading" box for too long. I finished it the day after I placed it there, and that was three weeks ago. I had problems giving it a final rating. I wanted to give it 4.5 stars, because it was so engrossing—it really held my attention—and overall the writing was excellent, the pacing well done. But there was a problem with the ending, a twist I didn't see coming, but one that also offended my scientific intelligence. So after a long discussion with myself, I've decided to give it four stars, with a "highly recommended" addendum.
<b>Overview</b>
WATCHING YOU is part of the Connie Woolwine series written by Helen Sarah Fields. I read the first book in this series, <i>"The Shadow Man"</i>, but I have obviously missed one or two that came between that first one and WATCHING YOU. I shall have to remedy this omission. In 2022, I read the author's entire D.I. Callanach series and loved it.
<b>Brief Synopsis</b>
Dr. Connie Woolwine is asked to assist Edinburgh's Major Investigation Team in an investigation of a man's body found discovered several months after he had been murdered. She has worked with this team before. DS Lively and DS Christie Salter are the primaries assigned to the case.
We soon discover that the central evil figure in the book is a stalker referred to as "The Watcher". He is stalking a trauma surgeon, Dr. Beth Waterfall, who—over the course of the early chapters in the book—develops a romantic relationship with Lively. There are many twists and turns, as there always are in a Helen Fields' novel, and I enjoyed following them all. Mind you, I particularly detested "The Watcher" because lately I have read too many real-life news stories about innocent victims being stalked by detestable men using tools now available through the internet.
Helen Fields has always been a good plotter. As well, I think that her "characterization skills" have improved. A couple of "victims" were brought alive to me, in terms of empathizing with them, even though we knew they would die. I loved DS Lively, also. Plus, although Dr. Woolwine remains somewhat of an enigma, she is an interesting enigma.
The ending involved three unexpected twists, one I liked, one I felt was a bit unfair to the reader (no hints provided of an event that occurred prior to the story's beginning), and one that was scientifically unsound. It was this latter, in particular, that caused me to drop a star. Not all novels require a "twist" at the end; sometimes it is better to simply watch the inevitable unfold.
Still, I loved the novel until that one implausible twist, and other readers might not find it as implausible as I did. So 4.5 stars overall, and now I must search out the Connie Woolwine novels that I have missed.

Ohhh wow loved this book all my favourite characters in one book it was gripping and suspensful and i really didnt see the end coming great twist.. so happy for lively that he finally gets to be happy love the comradery between the team even overbexk
and the hint to callanch and ava coming back near the end YEY...
cant wait to read the next one

Once again the dream team of Woolwine and Baarda, with back up from Midnight, are brought into help Edinburgh police get to the killer responsible for a spate of murders on their patch. Ably assisted by DSs Salter and Lively, along with new pathologist Dr Nate Carlisle, all overseen by the ever present Overbeck, everyone is soon brought up to date and made aware of what is expected of each member of the team, though Woolwine’s methods, especially her special ‘hands on’ approach, take some getting used to.
I love this series and can’t get enough of the Woolwine/Baarda partnership,. Amazing writing, excellent plots with well developed characters, first class all round.
This latest offering has all the elements of the previous books and yet adds so much more. Full of threat and suspense. And what an ending! Didn’t see that coming at all 😉
Excellent read, 100% recommendation.
Thank you NetGalley and Avon Books UK.

Just loved this book. I’ve missed Eva and Luc but was happy to see the return of Connie, Brodie and Sam Lively. I enjoyed the developing relationship between Lively and Beth. The story was fast moving with plenty of twists, that I really didn’t see coming. It was such an enjoyable experience.

Edinburgh is facing a puzzling spate of murders that seem to have no connection to each other Could it be the work of one individual and if so, why? Dr Connie Woolwine is called in by Edinburgh police to provide her very specific expertise. Connie has a rare insight into killers and their reasonings. Her methods at times can be confronting but she has in the past always gotten results. Even grouchy DS Lively concedes this. Watching You is another winner from Helen Fields. I squirmed more than once reading this. Some sections were uncomfortable to read. Saying that, I read this book as quickly as possible to see what happens. The highest compliment I can give a novel! Thank you Netgalley for my advance copy.

Disturbing, gripping and totally brilliant!! Helen in in her stride
When I saw that Helen had finished a new book I just knew I needed to get my hands on it! Every one of her books, be it Ava/Luc or Connie/Baarda has me up reading into the small hours and sneaking away to read ‘just a bit more’. This book was a perfect example of this, so much so I pretty much put a pause on life because I was just so engrossed!
Helen’s Connie Woolwine books are guaranteed page turners. As we get to know her more and understand her quirks we also see how her relationship with her colleague Brodie Baarda changes and develops. Theirs is an unusual collaboration, borne from mutual trust and respect which allows them both to support the other to flourish. Another character we get further insight to is detective Sam Lively. Such a funny, sarcastic guy. Lovely brings a little light relief to an otherwise dark narrative.
At times this book is an uncomfortable and difficult read. Helen really ramps up the creep-factor in this book and creates scenes that are both compelling and yet terrifying. If you’ve not read any of Helen’s books before, then firstly why not? And secondly you can start here. All of her books whilst connected in location and characters can be enjoyed independently. Although word of warning once you start this series you’ll find it hard to stop!
Thanks to NetGalley for my advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

I absolutely loved Watching You! If you’re looking for a tense, well-crafted thriller that takes you on a rollercoaster ride, look no further. Be warned…….this is definitely not one for the faint-hearted. Helen Fields does a brilliant job building suspense while gradually revealing the full scope of the crimes. The Edinburgh setting adds a gritty, atmospheric layer that perfectly matches the story’s dark tone.
The plot follows a string of brutal murders across the city, seemingly unconnected, but hinting at a disturbing pattern. DS Lively and forensic profiler Dr. Connie Woolwine are determined to uncover the truth. Meanwhile, surgeon Beth Waterfall, still grieving her daughter’s murder, begins to suspect she may be the killer’s next target.
Dr. Connie Woolwine is an intriguing character she’s a sharp, intuitive forensic profiler known for her unconventional approach, blending deep empathy, psychological insight, and gut instinct to get inside the minds of both victims and killers in ways others can’t.
Beth also brings a lot to the plot, she’s grieving and vulnerable, yet quietly resilient. Her trauma, combined with the looming threat against her, adds real urgency to the plot. The investigative team, especially Lively and Woolwine, bring energy and wit; their banter offers welcome lightness amidst the darkness.
What I appreciated most was how the killer’s presence loomed throughout the story, whether through chilling glimpses into their thoughts, chilling scenes where they watched victims unnoticed, or the unsettling chapters narrated from their point of view. The threat was ever present, keeping tension high and the reader constantly on edge. Helen Fields paces the reveals perfectly, offering just enough clues to keep the pages turning without giving too much away. The suspense builds steadily, and the sense of unease never lets up.
Watching You doesn’t rely on shock or gore alone. It’s a smart, character-driven thriller with sharp pacing and a conclusion that’s as satisfying as it is unsettling. I’d highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys dark crime fiction with a psychological edge.

When Edinburgh's Major Investigation Team find three bodies and zero leads, forensic profiler Connie Woolwine is called in. But while she practices her unusual methods, someone is watching and planning his next victim...
Watching You features characters from Helen Field's other books: Connie and Baarda from The Institution (which I've read) and The Shadow Man (which I haven't), Edinburgh's MIT from the D.I. Callanach series (which I haven't read), and Midnight Jones from Profile K (which I have), but it can also be read as a standalone. I love the way these books fit together, creating standalone thrillers which can be read in any order, and I am immediately adding the ones I haven't read to my to-read list.
Watching You alternates between the police investigation into a series of brutal murders and the perspective of The Watcher, as well as between the present where the investigation is taking place and the past where The Watcher first encountered trauma surgeon Beth Waterfall. I really enjoyed seeing the different strands of this book come together, and I was torn between wanting to read as quickly as possible to find out what happens and wanting to savour the story. Helen Fields writes dark thrillers like no-one else, and this one didn't disappoint with the brutality of the murders or the suspense of the investigation. I also loved the way she wove real-life issues into the book, particularly the misogyny of a world where victims are usually women and killers usually men.
Watching You was ultimately a four-star, rather than a five-star read, for me because I had to suspend my disbelief a little with the ending. But I found it an absorbing read that I can't stop thinking about, and I am very much looking forward to discovering more of Helen Fields' backlist. Highly recommended.

This was a really engaging crime thriller featuring an increasing number of murders in Edinburgh which have the police baffled and so the call on the inimitable Connie Woolwine, a forensic profiler with very unconventional methods. Alongside this we learn about surgeon Beth who is reeling from the loss of her daughter and we learn just what pushed her daughter to the brink. There’s some much mystery as to what links the increasing number of murders throughout as well as chapters told by someone who clearly has Beth in his sights and his behaviour gets more concerning as the story progresses. The twist in this is fantastic and I only saw it right before the moment it was revealed. The characters are great and there’s some interesting dynamics and Connie herself makes for a fabulous read in her own right,

Fields at her best again. Twists that I never saw coming, characters I felt emotionally connected with. I'm in love with Lively. He's fabulous and as for Woolbine...I just wanna be her.

Ooooof, started with a bang and ended with a twist that I genuinely did not see coming! Did miss a few familiar faces from previous books, but hopefully they'll be back for the next!

#WatchingYou #NetGalley
Set against the moody, gothic backdrop of Edinburgh, Watching You is a tense and intelligently written thriller that delivers both psychological depth and high-stakes suspense. Helen Fields, known for her gripping police procedurals, introduces readers to a new, disturbing case—one that intertwines personal loss with relentless violence.
What I Liked::-
1 Gritty, Dark Atmosphere: Fields paints Edinburgh as a city cloaked in shadows, where danger lurks behind respectable facades. The sense of place adds to the constant feeling of dread.
2 Strong Female Characters: Surgeon Beth Waterfall is a compelling protagonist—haunted yet resilient. Dr Connie Woolwine, the forensic profiler, is equally captivating, offering sharp insight and emotional complexity.
3 Layered Plotting: The storyline unfolds with precision. The victims seem unconnected at first, but the web gradually tightens, leading to a truly satisfying reveal.
4 Themes of Grief and Obsession: Beth’s heartbreak over her daughter adds emotional weight, while the killer’s obsessive behavior keeps the psychological tension high.
Overall, Watching You is a dark, gripping thriller with a deeply emotional core. It blends meticulous crime investigation with a haunting psychological narrative. Helen Fields proves once again that she can deliver both shocks and substance, crafting characters you care about while unraveling a truly disturbing mystery.
Thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for giving me an advance copy.

The body count is rising fast in Edinburgh and Dr Connie Woolwine 'Wooly' and Brodie Baarda are enlisted to bring their particular style of investigation to catch the killer.
Dr Beth Waterfall is grieving for a daughter - a beautiful and unique spirit who suffered a brutal regime of stalking and personal attacks before losing her life. Understandably, Beth Waterfall a surgeon at the local hospital, finds her world is rocked to the core and struggles massively to rebuild a life worth living.
There are some deeply unsettling characters in Watching You, Helen Fields breaths life into some of the most disturbed and depraved individuals - and also pens the bonkers Dr Connie Woolwine whose methods in this book are more out there than ever. Actually felt really quite sorry for Brodie Baarda in this one, he felt more like a taken for granted accessory.
The main policing team are great too, some really likeable characters among them and I enjoyed following Salter, Lively and Overbeck who set a balanced pathway alongside Connie Woolwine's more unconventional one.
There is A LOT packed into this book, with twists and turns that didn't see coming.

Twisty, turny, fast paced and thrilling. Absolutely everything I hope for in a Helen Fields story. Her plotting is superb and this opens with a build up body count as corpses turn up in unexpected places. Then the reader is hit with the prowling sense of menace as events are viewed from another perspective. The watcher is sinister but connections between the deaths are unclear. Bring in the old favourite team to help; Woolwine and Baarda add their distinctive touch to the investigations.
Helen Fields is a clever author. She depicts Edinburgh well; there’s a real sense of location which makes the setting familiar and plausible. And she’s using a cast of recurring characters in a slightly different way to usual. Readers will be familiar with a number of individuals in this story and aware that Callanach is away. The story is superb as a stand alone, but there are subtle character developments which are clear if the reader is familiar with earlier stories and series. I love this fresh take on a recurring theme. It keeps it fresh and with the skilful plotting, it’s real edge of your seat ride. I was literally breathless more than once. Just superb psychological thriller/ murder mystery in this race against time.
My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.

I think what makes this book is the characters, they're relatable, sometimes clichéd, but so incredibly interesting.
Add to that a string of deaths with no clues left behind, and it's a recipe for a great read.
Entertaining to the last page, and surprised me more than once.
Very very enjoyable but also very very scary how easy it is to hide behind a keyboard and destroy someone.

Fans of Helen will rejoice with this latest novel, which reintroduces plenty of old fictional friends and a city that is full of unsettling acts. Edinburgh’s police are flummoxed by one body, then another… and another. This is a novel with a high body count, a mother pining for her daughter after the bad actions of another and a killer who is consumed with enacting their deadly missions. We don’t want to give too much away hence the writing in circles. Allow the police to welcome you into their investigation, burrow deep into the minds of those most at risk and be glad that Helen is showing no signs of slowing down this fantastic series.

Dr Connie Woolwine and Brodie Baarda are called in to assist in Edinburgh. There are a spate of unconnected deaths, and the deaths are not at all similar.
Connie has to use her unique gift to unravel the mystery of who is responsible.
This is a fast paced thriller, twisty and puzzling. I could not predict the killer, and when the reveal came, it was an absolute shock.
There are quite a few characters in the book, but not so many that I had to take notes.
Very cleverly thought out, the plot will stun the reader and make your head spin. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.
I recommend.

Watching You by Helen Fields, published by Avon Books UK, is a raw and gritty, gripping thriller. Complex and complicated with twists and turns that had me in suspense till the very last page.
I recommend the book, 5 stars.

Helen Fields can do no wrong, she is an auto buy author for me. Her stories, writing everything and this book was no exception. A thrilling read, I would recommend and I will be buying a trophy copy!

Oh my! Well that definitely did not go the way I had imagined and I love that! What a twist. So it's written from multiple povs and there are quite a lot of characters and things going on. In saying that, it's still quite slow paced and rather than focusing on things always happening, it's more of a slow burn that builds thst dark, eerie tension throughout which works really well. The characters were original and just really human! I love characters that are believable and who react like people really would so that helped get me hooked. Overall, I really enjoyed it

As always, Helen Fields delivers! Brilliant storyline, I love Baarda and Connie and can't wait to see where their lives take them next. Story grips you and sucks you right in, and the twist at the end was very unexpected - fabulous!

Watching you is one of those books that has a really surprising ending. I honestly did not expect the way that it went!
This is the story of a series of murders happening over a period of time and to start with there seems to be little link. Dr Connie Woolwine and Baarda are brought back in to see if they can figure out the profile of the killer.
Overall this is an enjoyable book. Not fast paced, but interesting and keeps you asking questions.

3.5 out of 5 stars
"Watching You" by Helen Fields kicks off with a gripping and unsettling murder told from the victim Dale’s point of view—a unique and haunting choice that instantly drew me in. Set against the atmospheric backdrop of Scotland, the story quickly expands to another murder, this time of a local homeless man, and shifts to the perspective of Detective Sergeant Lively. The plot thickens when Lively begins to bond with the doctor who tried to save the second victim, all while being unknowingly observed by the “Watcher.”
Fields uses multiple points of view throughout, including those of the victims, which adds depth and dread but can sometimes feel disjointed. The suspense builds well in parts, and the voyeuristic element is undeniably creepy. However, the narrative occasionally loses focus, and the emotional impact lessens as more POVs are introduced.
While the premise is strong and the writing solid, the pacing falters in places, and some character development felt rushed or surface-level. Overall, this is an intriguing psychological thriller with some standout moments, but it didn’t fully deliver on its chilling promise.

⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5)
Watching You is a dark and gripping crime thriller that pulls you into the twisted mind of a killer and the tense world of those chasing him. Helen Fields crafts a story that's as chilling as it is compelling, with just the right blend of suspense, psychological depth, and procedural detail.
The plot follows a dedicated team of investigators unraveling a series of brutal, meticulously planned murders. The killer is always one step ahead, and the investigation takes the reader through a maze of secrets, lies, and personal demons. Fields balances the pace well, using sharp cliffhangers and unpredictable twists to keep the tension high.
What I loved:
Atmosphere: The tone is dark and immersive, with a strong sense of unease that lingers throughout the book.
Characters: The detectives are well-developed and flawed in believable ways, making them feel human and emotionally engaging.
Tension: The suspense is relentless, and the killer’s point of view adds an extra layer of creepiness.
What didn’t quite work:
Complexity: There are a lot of characters and subplots, which can be a bit overwhelming at times.
Violence: Some scenes are quite graphic and may be too intense for more sensitive readers.
Overall, Watching You is a gripping read that blends police procedural with psychological thriller elements. It’s intense, character-driven, and keeps you guessing until the very end. A strong pick for fans of dark, gritty crime fiction.

Watching You is a fast paced well plotted thriller that will have you holding your breath, crossing your fingers and hopiing for the best.
Watching You is gripping from start to finish.
Expect the unexpected from Helen Fields and be prepared to read long into the night.
The atmosphere is dark and creepy and the atmosphere is tense with twists and turns, secrets and lies.
Trying to guess the ending is fruitless ( though I tried) as a major twist will shock you.
Highly recommend Watching You but be warned you will be looking over your shoulder during and after reading.
Thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books UK/Avon for the privilege of reading and reviewing Watching You.

Excellent twisty storyline.
Keeps you guessing right to the end.
Thoroughly enjoyable.
Great book as always from Helen Fields
Thanks for the opportunity to read and review

I loved the character of Connie Woolwine! And I enjoyed the cameo of another character who I really liked from a previous book.
This was a very tense, immersive read. As we know from early on the who, though not the why, I thought this was going to be an enjoyable, albeit straight forward, police drama with the unique twist being the addition of Connie who uses some strange methods to unravel the mystery. And it was that - however! - there was a plot twist that made my jaw drop and then a further twist that actually made complete sense that I should have spotted earlier but the author was too clever for me with the little red herrings!
Many thanks to Avon Books UK and NetGalley for the ARC.

As always, a massive thank you to netgalley for allowing me to read an ARC of this book.
I have been a fan of helen fields for years. I've loved every single book she has written and this is another one to add to that list.
In this we see a return of the brilliant Connie Woolwine, and other returning characters, on another case that they need to solve. Helen really knows her stuff when it comes to detective work and it really does shine through in her writing, I've never read a detective book written by her and been left wondering what its all about. Helen describes the detective process really well and it all makes sense. As always, some twists and turns in there. I couldn't put this down. I have been in a reading slump but this definitely got me out of that. I look forward to the next installment of Connie and the gang

Helen Fields can do no wrong. Another page turner. On par with her previous books that's for sure. Can't wait to read more. Am currently reading her previous series now

There is a killer lurking, called The Watcher. There are several unexplained murders in Edinburgh and the number is growing. Watching You is a thrilling and well thought out mystery. DS Lively and Dr. Connie Woolwine, a forensic profiler, are tasked with this complex case. DS Lively finds an unexpected deep connection to surgeon Dr. Beth Waterfall, who lost her daughter to a vicious stalker. This is a book with very well developed characters, some who are deeply disturbing, and it will keep your interest. There is an unusual twist at the end that I admit I’m uncomfortable with and I didn’t see coming. Still I recommend this dark and complicated story. With thanks to Netgalley and Avon Books UK for this ARC. My opinions are my own.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Do you prefer your thrillers on the darker side? Well, you’ve come to the right place. Helen Fields once again serves up a true spine-chiller.
Let me introduce you to the Connie Woolwine series. Connie is a forensic psychologist brought in from the US to aid the local Scottish police. By her side is ex-police officer Brodie Baarda, there as her assistant (of sorts) and protector.
They’re working alongside DS Lively and his partner in tracking down a potential serial killer, hopefully before he strikes again.
Helen Fields has the magic recipe to balance a police investigation while showing a vulnerable side of the team trying to bring down a killer.
Each installment of this series gives me a better understanding of our characters and I’m becoming more and more connected to them.
Can this book work as a stand-alone? YES! Absolutely! But you’ll be missing out on the character development. So my recommendation is starting at the beginning with The Shadow Man!
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books UK

So before I start the review I must say that Helen Fields is one of my favourite crime writers I know that once I start one of her books I will not be able to put it down.
This book is simply phenomenal in the crime genre. It grips you from the first page to the last and in my opinion is her best book to date. It pulls you along at a frantic pace and by going back in the time line it keeps you hooked and you really do feel for some of the characters.
If you are a Fields fan there is one subtle part in the narrative that is a sort of blink and miss it moment but I almost screamed out loud....read it you will if you are a fan understand.
I can not recommend this book highly enough if it does not win multiple crime writing award this year there is no justice in the world. I would say more but to say more may give the plot away and oh wow what a plot.
It is a masterpiece in the genre read it you will not regret it.

There’s a killer watching and lurking deep within the shadows in Edinburgh. A body is found and surgeon, Beth Waterfall and her team do their best to save him to no avail. There’s a second discovered at Jupiter Artland and this one is unrecognisable – soon there will be more. Who is The Watcher stalking grieving Beth? Her much loved daughter Molly fell victim to someone who ruins her life a year ago and it seems that Beth herself will become a victim if DS Christie Salter, DS Sam Lively, forensic profiler Dr Connie Woodwine and ex-met officer Brodie Baarda cannot find the killer in time. It’s a race, who will get to the end first?
There’s always a whoop whoop from me at the anticipation of a new Helen Fields and this series is excellent with a terrific Edinburgh background. The two central characters of Connie and Brodie are so good, I like the contrasting personalities, their razor sharp minds and insights, their fascinating relationship and the lively banter between them. I also like the addition of DS Sam Lively, he’s very likeable in a grumpy sort of way and witnessing him changing is a light in among the darkness. Beth Waterfall’s daughter Mollys situation is described heartbreakingly well and poor Beth’s feelings are relatable.
The story is told via alternating chapters of the investigation with the perspective of that of The Watcher which is chillingly powerful. This really builds the tension and suspense often sky high. It’s tightly plotted, it’s hard hitting, fast paced, there is never a dull moment and the usual rollercoaster read that I’ve come to expect from Helen Fields. There’s plenty of emotion as well as shocks and as the author rarely holds back, I know what I’m in for and definitely not disappointed. There’s a strong sense of impending doom as the reader waits for something awful to happen but praying that your worst fears aren’t realised. At times the tension is off the scale, there are some absolute cracker scenes with chapter endings that result in the odd expletive from me, that is after I’ve picked my jaw up off the floor! The author really is on fire!
As for the much debated ending, well, I like it. A lot. It’s creative and original so what more can you ask for? I look forward to reading what the authors fertile imagination conjures up next – I’m assuming it’ll be Luke and Ava. Three cheers!
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Avon books for the much appreciated early copy in return for an honest review.

Any book by Helen Fields is always worth reading and this latest is no exception. It is well written, with an original plot and the characterisation is just spot on. Set in Edinburgh, when a body is found Dr Beth Waterfall is assisting with the investigation. I really liked her character, although profiler Connie is also brilliant and very original. The pacing has a steady flow, sometimes a bit slow, but overall this is a very good character driven novel, with an unexpected twist, which I really enjoyed and would recommend to lovers of thrillers. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

A terrifying psychological thriller that page on page never fails to stoke up everyone’s worst nightmares. Every character involved in this murder investigation is an intelligent and logical individual who nevertheless succeeds in failing to apprehend a serial killer whilst the perpetrator continues to evade punishment. A profiler and partner despite years of experience only appear to successfully ascertain the idiosyncrasies and weaknesses of the investigation team whilst the perpetrator continues to remain invisibly obscure. A slow agonising build up to an excruciating and harrowing exposure towards a conclusion that defies each and every possible logical revelation as to the identity of the perpetrator. A five star read that is screaming to be made into a movie that would defy each and every expectation.

As a longtime fan of Helen Fields and someone who’s read most of her backlist, I was really looking forward to Watching You—and it did not disappoint! Fields once again delivers her signature blend of suspense, tension, and emotional depth. I especially loved the return of some familiar characters, which added an extra layer of connection and nostalgia for those who have followed her previous work.
There were moments where I found myself getting a bit lost with the number of characters and shifting perspectives, but it all came together in the end and made sense. Fields’ storytelling remains compelling, and the pacing kept me turning pages late into the night.
A strong addition to her growing list of thrillers—definitely recommended for fans of the genre and anyone who loves a twisty, well-written crime novel.
Big thank you to Avon Books UK and NetGalley for the ARC

A Helen Fields novel is something special and for me this is one of the best. It is a Woolwine and Barca series Anne it is great to meet Connie Woolwine again, who definitely does things her own way! The characters are so well developed and the pacing keeps the tension building. There are plenty of twists along the way, the biggest of which genuinely took me by surprise. Which doesn’t happen very often! A terrific read. Definitely can be read as a standalone.

Firstly I would like to thank netgalley and Avon books and the brilliant author Helen Fields for a early copy of her book to read.
This book is set in Edinburgh not to far from where I live.A crime read.A death then more follows a serial killer on the loose..DS Lively and forensic Profiler Connie Woolvine are on the case will they find the killer before the next victim...my rating is 3.5 rounded to four as found it to be a bit slow in parts...looking forward to reading more of her books.
This book will be reviewed on goodreads and Amazon.

Edinburgh's murder investigation team is at a loss looking for clues to three unsolved murders committed over a short period of time. Enlisting the help of forensic profiler Connie Woolwine, they soon realise they have a serial killer to contend with.
I still find it difficult to believe that I only discovered Helen Fields' novels in 2021 when I read One For Sorrow, the seventh book in the Luc Callanach series. Since then, I've consumed all but two of the author's novels. I've loved everything I've read and one of the things I've particularly enjoyed is the way in which some of the characters pop up in other series. Watching You is a prime example of this. The setting is Edinburgh, home of the murder investigation team that Luc Callanach and Ava Turner are part of. Both detectives are absent, so it is down to DS Lively and DS Salter to lead the investigation, with Detective Superintendent Overbeck keeping a close eye on proceedings. To help the investigation, Dr Connie Woolwine (The Shadow Man/The Institution) and her partner Brodie Baarda are brought in to consult, and the pair enlist the help of Midnight Jones (Profile K/The Profiler). Anyone picking up this book as their first taste of the author's work shouldn't be concerned as the story works well as a standalone one and will probably entice you to go back and read the rest of the back catalogue.
The story goes at a blistering pace as we go from the first victim being dragged to their death, through to the conclusion of events. The author puts you into the mind of some of the victims as they live their final few moments, graphic and grisly descriptions are avoided, but it is still enough to give you an unsettling feeling.
I have never been a fan of Sam Lively, but in Watching You, we see a completely different side to the brusque and uncouth DS who is regularly a pain in Luc Callanach's side. As the investigation intensifies, we get a greater understanding of why he behaves as he does and even see a softer, more caring side.
As the bodies begin to pile up, it takes consultant Connie Woolwine to link the deaths and spot the connection, local surgeon Beth Waterfall, whom DS Lively is attracted to. We are given brief glimpses into Beth's background, and this is the most chilling aspect of the whole novel. We discover that Beth's daughter Molly was a successful artist until she attracted a stalker who made her life a living hell. The lengths that the stalker went to are truly terrifying and incredibly plausible. No matter how hard she tried, Molly could not escape the grip of the stalker, and her life spiraled out of control with devastating consequences.
Everything leads to an intense conclusion, with more than one life in jeopardy, as the killer homes in on his target. Not content with a cold and sadistic serial killer, Helen Fields throws in a couple of almighty twists at the end, which I certainly didn't see coming and raises the brilliance of the book. I also loved the final scene in the police station, which warmed my heart, putting to rest a fear that had existed for four years.

I had read a few thrillers prior to this and so I was going to leave it on the shelf for a later date but I'm glad I didn't because it was so addictive.
I do own two of Helen's books - The Institution and Profile K - but I haven't yet read them, but they will definitely be bumped up my TBR list now.
This book grabs you instantly. It is fast paced and tense and doesn't let up from the first word to the last.
I read so many thrillers, they're my most read genre, but it seems that no matter how much I enjoyed them, they do get a bit samey after a while. So it was lovely to read a thriller that still gave me everything I expect from the genre but with a fresh perspective.
There are quite a number of characters, main ones, secondary and background, heroes and villains. But it never feels too much. Every character is given enough time to develop and you really get attached to them, even the 'baddies'.
I have read a couple of reviews that are questionable about the ending but I loved it. It was so unique and unexpected and yet really wrapped everything up in a shocking but satisfying way.
I didn't realise the character of Connie Woolwine is in a few of her books, and it didn't hinder my reading of this one having not read the others, but I'm looking forward to spotting her turn up again.
It doesn't rely on gore, it doesn't sensationalise the violence, Helen relies on suspense, fear, to keep the thrilling pace up and she's done it to such a great extent.
This was an incredible book. The twists and turns with a big reveal I would NEVER have seen coming.
The only thing I didn't like was the cover but that's because I have a phobia of butterflies so I won't hold that against her 😊
It is such original, tense, fast-paced, layered, fabulous, intriguing, edge-of-your-seat stuff.

Yes it's a thriller about a serial killer so obviously there's going to be some difficult topics, but as well as murder and death and loss, this book contains mentions of physical illness, mental illness, memory loss, suicide, stalking, and malevolent spirits.

Wow, Watching You is a cracker of a read that grabs you right from the first page and doesn't let go until you reach the end. Connie Woolwine, a forensic profiler, and a colleague are asked to help the Murder Investigation Team on an open case and when more murders follow Woolwine and the police team search desperately for victim links. I enjoyed following Woolwine working with the police team to find the murderer and whilst DS Lively is skeptical of Woolwine's working methods will they get results? The authors writing is very good and engaging, the story flows well and moves from past to present times easily. The plot is very believeable and stalking and the effect and consequences it has on the victim and their families is dealt with well here. Does this connect with the murders and why is the victim being stalked? I kept trying to second guess what would happen next and who the murderer was and I couldn't have been more wrong. I enjoyed the brief catch up with Midnight, Dawn and Doris and how they are faring and liked that Lively's personal life takes a turn for the better here.
I really enjoyed reading Watching You, if you like police procedurals that are well written and full of thrills, mystery and suspense with characters you take to heart and root for then this is for you and I'd recommend it. I hope the author has plans for Woolwine, Baarda, Lively and Salter in future books and I would definitely want to read them.
4 stars

If there’s one thing that Helen Fields is good at is the incredible opening chapters to her novels! I’m always drawn in from the start - more often than not gut-churning and gory, but with incredible scenes that have you wanting more! Loved the twist in this one - absolutely didn’t see that coming! Loved the cameo from Midnight from Profile K (The Profiler) and it always has me wanting more!

I am a fan of Helen Fields, and have read many of her books. Watching You is a gritty police procedural with a dark side, along with likable, relatable characters and relationships, albeit the ending left me a bit baffled. Recommend this book and all of this author’s books!

When a homeless man is admitted to hospital with multiple stab wounds, DS Lively rushes to the hospital hoping to speak to him before he is operated on. Surgeon Beth Waterfall is ready to operate and Lively barely gets a word out of the man before he has to be sedated.
When he later speaks to Beth Waterfall he feels a connection he hasn’t felt in years. But Beth is hiding her own trauma, the stalker who ruined her daughter’s life is now seemingly out to ruin hers.
Meanwhile DS Christie Salter is called to the discovery of human remains in a well-known beauty spot. Then an elderly woman is brutally killed and it’s clear that the Edinburgh murder investigation teams are going to be very busy.
Profiler Dr Connie Woolwine is brought in to help but with no forensic evidence and no connection between the victims how much can she actually do.
Fast paced, gritty and utterly gripping, this will have you on the edge of your seat and guessing from start to finish.
Helen Fields is a brilliant author but she has outdone herself this time. This original, dark, gritty story had me totally hooked. I read it in two sittings.

As usual this was a fabulous read by Helen Fields.
A gritty police procedural novel with the added bonus of a criminal psychologist. Connie Woolwine is back and she's straight into the case.
Three murders seemingly random have the team flummoxed, and they need all of their combined skills to catch the killer.
The characters are great and have close camaraderie with each other, friendly banter helps them during difficult times.
Watching you is a pacy novel with an underlying sense of suspense and intruige. Certainly a novel to lose yourself in

Helen Fields is back with a bang with Watching You her new thriller. Set in Edinburgh with DS's Lively and Slater and specialists Dr Woodwine and Brodie as the main characters. We're very quickly thrown into a rip-roaring story that never really stops to take a breath. The twists and turns are enough to give you whiplash and the ending is amazing and totally unexpected. An absolutely fantastic 5 star read for me. Recommended if you want a book that grips at the first page and doesn't let go.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advance copy. All opinions are my own.

Wow! What a whirlwind this one is!
Just when you think you know what is happening, along comes another twist which changes everything!!
When a body is found, little does the police force know that they may be dealing with a serial killer, as the bodies mount up, suspicion falls in different places, but just what is going on. As DS Lively and his associates begin to investigate, things start to become far more personal for them all.
This really is a fast paced read, I really found it impossible to put down, especially the last 40%, where so much happens!
There are quite a few key characters in this one and they are all well developed and they grow on you throughout the story.
It certainly wasn’t predictable and the conclusion was not what I was expecting, with more than one surprise late on in the book!
All in all an absolute must read, but do clear yourself some time as you won’t want to put it down!!

I loved being back in Edinburgh, especially with Dr Woolwine and DS Lively combining forces. I really enjoyed the book, and found the resolution to be unusual and intriguing. I was also pleased to get a fleeting glimpse of a particular pair of characters, and am hopeful that we will see more of them soon.
An enjoyable read.

Ok, what can I say other than, I was hooked and I didn’t want it to end and I wasn’t expecting this to be like that. Please give this book a go!!

Raw and visceral
Fascinating - I had no idea of the topic in the book but THAT was an eye opener!
Horror in many ways mixed with crime
But with that Fields stamp of quality on it as ever

I knew this was going to be good, all the author’s books are, but I had no idea just how good it would be and like the others definitely not for the faint-hearted!
Gripping does not come close. A brilliant twisty plot. The fabulously complicated Woolwine and Baarda join Lively and Police Scotland when three gruesome, yet apparently unconnected, murders confound them.
Brilliantly tense and fast paced this read hurtles you along in its grisly wake. I was completely engrossed in this, but OMG the twist!
Fascinating and all the more horrific because this might be a work of fiction but the topic is very very real.
Again the author knocks it out of the park.

I absolutely loved this book, with its familiar characters. This author has been a favorite of mine and I can’t wait to see what she'll write next.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for the opportunity to read this ARC.

I adore how Helen Fields can draw you in and weave a story. This one…. Wow… Absolutely amazingly brilliant from start to finish and oh boy, what a finish! 5 solid stars! A must read.

3.75 stars
I've had a good time with every book that I've read from this author, but sadly this wasn't my favourite of the series.
It took me longer than usual to get into the story, which meant that I kept putting it down and picking it back up.
It just didn't grab me like expected.
Once things did get going it was a lot better. And there was a nice twist too.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Just finished Watching You....oh Helen I feel like I was chucked into a tornado, landed, stuck on a washing machine of full speed, rinsed then tumble dried for 60 minutes on high speed....what a read that was, my guy Lively found love....and you let him keep it....oh God I'm tearing up just writing this.....and Luc and Ava.....you kept us waiting but hairs on my neck stood up as they entered...sooooo happy...and Connie , Brodie.....🤞..... can't wait to meet them all again....I can't pick a favourite character as I love them all....also can't wait to hear how Robin creeps me out in his own special was with Kyle....you write the most despicable, creepy monsters that always make me check under my bed before sleep....but now I'm watching everywhere for danger...cheers Helen, you are a genius of this genre

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Watching You - Helen Fields
If there is one book you should read this year - THIS IS IT!
Absolutely brilliant from start to finish - and not content with pulling the rug from under me once, Helen did it twice! What an ending!!
I sincerely hope that this is not the last we see of the characters in this latest outing - incredibly vivid, incredibly eccentric but above all else incredibly brilliant.
Book of the year for me….make sure it’s on your list.

Watching You by Helen Fields presents a premise that I thought would draw me into a dark and suspenseful narrative. The story follows renowned surgeon Beth Waterfall as she copes with the aftermath of her daughter's murder at the hands of a stalker. As a new string of brutal and seemingly disconnected murders occurs in the city, DS Lively and forensic profiler Dr. Connie Woolwine work tirelessly to uncover the identity of a serial killer. I had a hard time liking Dr. Woolwine. I did like DS Christie Salter and her relationship with DS Lively.
The author does build tension in the story, intertwining Beth’s personal grief with the unfolding investigations. The depiction of Edinburgh adds a nice backdrop to the story, making its dark alleys and streets almost a character in their own right.
However, some of the characters often feel underdeveloped and somewhat one-dimensional. And the dialogue can feel stilted to me. The resolution, while satisfying, does not offer any groundbreaking revelations that would elevate the story beyond a traditional crime thriller.
Overall, Watching You is an engaging read for fans of the genre, offering a mix of suspense and emotional depth. It provides enough thrills to keep readers entertained from start to finish. If you're looking for a gripping story to pass the time, this book delivers on that front. I would recommend and rate it 3.75 out of 5 stars (rounded to 4).

On the Dark Streets of Edinburgh, a Killer is Waiting
This taut, blood chilling thriller wastes no time getting under your skin. From the first gruesome discovery to the spiraling terror that grips Edinburgh, the tension is relentless.
At the heart of the story is Beth Waterfall, a brilliant surgeon shattered by grief. A year after losing her daughter to a sadistic stalker, she finds herself back in the crosshairs only this time, the threat is broader, bloodier, and far more calculated. The murders start stacking up, each one brutal, each one baffling. The city is panicking. The police are scrambling.
Enter DS Lively and Dr. Connie Woolwine, a detective profiler duo trying to connect the dots in a case that refuses to make sense. Woolwine brings psychological insight, while Lively grounds the investigation with grit. Together, they unravel a chilling pattern that points toward a serial killer methodical, patient, and terrifyingly ahead of them.
The book thrives on sharp pacing, short chapters, and cliffhangers that make it nearly impossible to put down. The author’s depiction of Edinburgh is moody and claustrophobic, amplifying the sense of unease. As the body count rises, so does the fear that Beth’s fate is already sealed.
I always enjoy Helen Fields books and this didn’t disappoint thank you to Netgalley and HarperCollins Collins for an ARC

Watching You is a tense thriller focusing on the hunt for a serial killer who seems to follow no discernible pattern with their kills. A homeless man stabbed. A woman mown down as she walks home from the shops. The victims don’t seem to be linked at all, and the police are fumbling for information. The police don’t know what to say, but DS Lively and forensic psychologist Connie Woolwine are convinced they have a serial killer to catch.
While the details of the deaths are unravelling we also have scenes from the perspective of someone called the watcher. They are clinical in their observations…and have set their sights on surgeon Beth Waterfall.
As we follow the teams’ investigations we watch the cases build up and gain an understanding of the characters behind the scenes.
The ending was not expected at all, and though it felt like a rather neat trick it was definitely an interesting concept.
Thanks to NetGalley for giving me the chance to read and review this.

4.5⭐️
I’m a big fan of this author with both the standalone and the perfect series. However I didn’t love The Institution but wanted to give another book in the Connie series a try as I loved the first book The Shadow man. Watching You can be enjoyed as a standalone.
I find it had to know what to make of Connie, she’s more than a little strange, the relationship with her partner in crime Baarda is also unconventional.
We have surgeon Beth Waterfall, DS Lively and plenty of bodies. We also get the antagonist’s dark twisted perspective making this a crime / psychological thriller fusion which is a favourite style for me.
I feel that the author is back on form with this book. It’s dark with plenty of interest and twists.

Watching you by Helen Fields is the next instalment involving forensic profiler Dr Connie Woolwine and ex police officer Brodie Baarda.
In the dark streets of Edinburgh, a killer is watching. Soon after several people have been murdered with no obvious link. The pair has been asked by the Murder investigation team to assist DS lively to seek the potential serial killer.
At the local hospital Dr Beth Walker is still grieving over the death of her daughter Molly who died a year previously Molly was a victim of a vicious stalker who destroyed her life. Which resulted in her taking her own life. Little does Beth know the same man is watching her. Will she be the next victim?
I always get excited that a new book from Helen Fields is born. This is another fantastic read by Helen fields. This is a well-executed story but darker and more sinister than her other books and at times quite unsettling with the stalker’s exploits. But on the lighter sides I enjoyed reading of the great characters of the investigation team and Connie and Brodie. It had an ending I didn’t see coming 5 stars from me.

Page turning police procedural drama from one of my favourite authors.
One of the best things about @helenfields_author writing is the characters she creates & makes you love. In this, we have Connie Woolwine & Brodie Baarda back in Edinburgh, which then gives us the bonus of some other much loved characters coming into play, too, such as DS Lively & a very important cameo.
Clever writing which is easy to get lost in, loveable characters, suspense, atmosphere & twists galore.
I will always recommend Helen Fields & if you want the full experience, start with the Perfect series & then just keep going.

A wonderful police procedural thriller, A Serial killer and wonderful characters that leave you gripped from the start. I cannot recommend this author enough

What an amazing book! Only to be expected with Helen Fields really. This is the first book I’ve really enjoyed in a good long while….I simply couldn’t put it down! Lots of interesting twists & turns! Thoroughly recommend

Dr Connie Woolwine’s expertise is called upon once again but this time she is assisting DS Lively with some seemingly unconnected murders in Edinburgh. As the body count rises, they become more convinced that these murders may be linked after all. With seven in total so far, the unconventional Dr and Scotland Yard detective find themselves in a race against time before any more bodies turn up.
Elsewhere Dr Beth Waterfall, a decorated surgeon is still mourning the death of her only daughter, who committed suicide after becoming the victim of a stalker. Beth is living in fear that she may become the same fate – but how does this link to the spate of killings?
Can the psychologist and detective find this killer who calls themselves ‘The Watcher’ before it’s too late?
I absolutely love Helen’s writing!! She has a way of luring you in with a false sense of security, as though you are waiting for someone to jump out at you from around a corner! The story chuggs away at the start like being sat on a leisurely train ride, then all of a sudden BANG! You’re on the wildest roller coaster of your life!! And in true Helen style, the biggest twist ever that you literally will not even expect AT ALL!
Absolutely loved this! And Dr Connie is my absolute fave!! I really think she deserves a spin of series of her own!
Thank you Helen and NetGalley for gifting me a copy of this book in exchange for my review!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Gripping. Relentless. Completely Unputdownable.
Watching You is the kind of thriller that grabs you by the throat from page one—and doesn’t let go until the final, chilling twist.
Helen Fields is at the top of her game here. This isn’t just a murder mystery—it’s a full-body experience: tension in your chest, dread in your stomach, and constant suspicion clouding every character. I was hooked, horrified, and absolutely obsessed.
🩸 A ruthless serial killer on the loose
🕵️♂️ A desperate investigation with razor-sharp twists
💔 A grieving mother, a haunted detective, and a profiler who sees too much
📍Set against the brooding streets of Edinburgh
Fields expertly weaves together grief, trauma, and psychological suspense into a serial killer thriller that feels devastatingly real. The pacing is pitch-perfect, the stakes are sky-high, and the ending? Jaw. On. Floor.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of Watching You by Helen Fields. This was a gripping read, and Connie Woolwine is, as always, a tour de force—fierce, intelligent and unapologetically complex. The character development across the board is strong, and I was fully invested in the dynamics between the investigative team and the suspects.
The forensic detail, especially around neurology and psychological profiling, is exceptional. It’s clear that Fields has done her research, and it adds real depth and credibility to the plot.
While I was completely hooked for most of the book, I wasn’t entirely convinced by the final few chapters but that didn’t take away from how compelling the journey was overall. A dark, smart and thought-provoking thriller that I’d definitely recommend.

I am a big fan of Helen Fields’ novels - I’ve read nearly all of the DI Callanach series and all of the Dr Connie Woolwine books and so requesting Watching You was a no-brainer.
Watching You is set in the same precinct as the DI Callanach series and has Connie Woolwine featuring, as well as side characters from Profile K. These are great if you have read all of the other books as it gives extra information on each of the characters (as well as a little Easter egg for the next read from Fields), but I don’t think would matter too much if you didn’t know all of the key players. The plot is intriguing and twisty enough to keep you hooked at every turn.
One thing that I love about Helen Fields’ writing is that she really puts you in the shoes of her characters and makes you empathise with them. Whether that is the perpetrator with a troubled past, the police that are trying to catch them, or even a victim that you know will end up dead in a few pages time. This is particularly showcased in the chapter from Divya Singh’s perspective, which stuck with me throughout.
The changes in perspectives and time-line jumps are used to good effect and the plot never becomes confusing or muddled. It works to keep the tension high, drip-feed information to the reader and add dimension to the plot. I can’t say anything without giving away spoilers but the ending is brilliant and I did not see that twist coming – perfect storytelling!
Overall, Watching You is another brilliant and twisty read from Helen Fields – highly recommended. Thank you to NetGalley & Avon Books UK for the chance to read the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A gripping hunt for a serial killer takes a couple of unexpected but welcome twists in the denouement that raises its rating from 3 to 4 stars. I was particularly impressed with the character of Connie, a brash profiler whose talents extend to conversing with the dead!

It’s always a good day when Helen Fields releases a new book. ‘Watching You’ features the enigma that is Dr Connie Woolwine, her faithful sidekick Brodie Baarda as well as some ‘old familiars’ – DS Lively and DS Salter. I love every one of these characters, they each have their own unique personalities and quirks, but I will admit that Lively is my favourite – his witty comebacks often have me laughing out loud!
All in all, this book is an expertly written police procedural, which successfully combines shifting timelines and psychological elements with suspense, twists and turns and the odd red herring. It is a fastmoving tale, which is both gripping and thought-provoking. Very highly recommended.

I have read most of Helen Field’s books and all of this series. This is a cracking addition to the story. Loved the interaction between the characters, great banter. The ending was a revelation. There were lots of twists and turns. Thought I had solved it only to have a curve ball thrown! Looking forward to the next one!

Thanks @netgalley @helenfields_author & the publishers for the ARC.
I have ALWAYS been a fan of Helen Fields books and once again this hasn't disappointed! This is the 2nd book where we meet profiler Dr Connie Woolwine and it is set in Edinburgh where a serial killer is on the loose!
It is fast paced, tense, suspenseful and really kept my attention throughout! I was totally engrossed!
The book was so well written with different chapters from different perspectives which added to the drama! And then the ending...I'm saying no more apart from you need to give this a go!

I loved the quirkyness of this one.
Lively is a good character and his relationship with Beth runs alongside the crimes in this. Beth's link with Karl makes this an interesting and suspenseful cat and mouse thriller. However, there's a great twist that is a new one for me. Good to learn something new!! 😁
Connie and Baarda add another element to this and Connie's quirky way of getting into the mind of the perps. She's annoying but likeable at the same time 😂
Really enjoyed this and couldn't put it down!!

I am a it fan of Helen Fields book but this wasn’t my favourite I am afraid. I liked it but there was a lot going on and it did seem to be dragged out in parts. The writing was amazing as always with this author
I do enjoy a dark and creepy and somewhat messy crime book and Watching You certainly did all of that. A serial killer in Edinburgh, but it is not obvious that it is the same killer. Different ways of killing victims, it is a tough case for the team.
I didn’t realise that this was part of a series, but it certainly can be read as a stand alone book. I have read the other books in the series but it is easy to read without doing so .
I really did not like Connie in this book. She is very hard to get on with, she is just weird and a bit too quirky for me., very strange.
This is a an emotional one, very character driven.
Thanks to Avon Uk for my copy to read. Out on August 28h.

I loved this! Police procedurals are one of my favourite genres and this was an epic one. This was my first Helen Fields book and although it’s part of a series it read perfectly as a standalone and I will be checking out the others immediately! I absolutely loved all the characters in this and the pacing was spot on. 5/5!

Loved it!! What a great page turner, DS Livey and his colleagues face a real conundrum. Enter Connie Woolwine and her sidekick to help. Who is killing these random and unconnected people, and why? A very intricate storyline told alternately from the watcher and then everyone else. Scary stalker content which also brought out how stalking should never be underestimated .It had many twist and turns with an explosive ending that blindsided the reader, but was very satisfying and plausible. Love all Helen Fields books, so much research goes into them to make them realistic and I cannot wait for the next one. Thank you NetGalley for the advanced copy.

Ooooh what a twisted web! So we bounce around a little bit but absolutely easy to follow, we hear from the killer as they are going after their victims. We don't always get this is crime fiction books so it is always interesting I think to be seeing through their eyes. Beth is going to be the next victim, The Watcher is sick, focused, obsessed and already targeted Beth's daughter now Beth is his obsession. Beth is a medical professional, a surgeon and great at her job, her and DS Lively cross paths through work. Beth finds herself in danger, threats becoming more and more evident and could something be there with her and grumpo Lively. Beth herself is grieving, traumatised but a strong and focused individual so that gives us a lot of insight and an emotive character. DS Lively is quite different and some of their interactions brings banter/light relief (he is a bit of the grump type though he plays well) but also the serious side of police investigation.
Do you know what I love about this book? I have read a fair few of Fields (I checked and I have two I think to catch up on, one I have another I have to buy) and I don't always read in order. However in this one I recognise quite a few characters. The ball busting boss we have met before in other books, Profiler Connie is so weird but in the absolutely best kind of way, Winnie, Midnight also make wee appearances and I love that. I did have to check my other reviews because I was like I know those names so the crossover is something I really appreciate. It also makes me check what book(s) I have missed and will be getting them sorted.
This one has stalking, murder, friendship, love, family, mental health, trauma and that is just for starters. Fields has a gift for creating some horrific baddies interwoven with characters facing some real heartache, loss, recovery so it is a real rollercoaster. 4.5/5 for me this time, Connie could have a series of 20+ and I would read them all, she isn't exactly a main character in this one but defo a central character and I think she scene steals because she is just so unique and genuine!

Yet another page turner from Helen Fields. Her characters are fascinating, her plots are thrilling and the twists and turns just keep coming. Set in Edinburgh and with D S Lively's team depleted, Dr Connie Woolwine and her partner Brodie Baarda are called in to help. Connie's methods are strange and do not sit right with D S Lively but they have to work together.
The story is told from two viewpoints - the story where the murders keep happening and from the point of view of The Watcher.
Another page turner and another wait for the next book.
Many thanks to Netgalley/Helen Fields/Avon Books UK for a digital copy of this title. All opinions expressed are my own.

I really enjoyed this book by Helen Fields "Watching you". This is the first book I have read by Helen, but it definitely wont be my last. There were lots of twists and turns in the book, and I enjoyed guessing right to the very end.
I recommend this book to those who enjoy thriller stories.

A fantastic thriller full of twists along the way. Some brilliant characters including a very eccentric Connie who is a great mix of madness and genius. All of the characters were very believable and authentic and I really took to DS Lively. Not sure if this book is part of a series but will certainly look out for more.

What a thrilling read again and I loved being back with DS Lively in Edinburgh again.
It was the perfect mix of twists and turns and an ending I didn’t see coming.
The new characters especially Connie just made the storyline and plot so much more engaging and I absolutely loved the small mentions of my favourite two and the beginning and end of the book. I’m hoping that means we can meet them all again very soon.
Another pulsating, dark and twist edge of your seat read.
Fabulous.

Helen Fields at her ABSOLUTE best!
I've binge read the previous Connie Woolwine books, and was beyond excited be offered the chance to read her latest. Was not disappointed

Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.
DS Lively and his team at Police Scotland are back, and crime isn't far behind. A spate of murders happen, and DS Lively starts to believe they are connected to one killer. And in comes Connie Woolwine and Brodie. Connie comes round to the same conclusion, and time is running out to catch him while he is watching.
This author is one of my favourites, and I always look forward to reading her work. This story was captivating, with twists and turns, and the odd red herring thrown in. I really love the characters, DS Lively is brilliantly written, serious with a slice of humour, and Connie and Brodie bounce off each other really well. The story was fantastically written as usual, and was fast paced, it took me no time at all to race to end. I cant wait to see what crimes await Police Scotland next. 5 star book and highly recommended.

Yes!!! This was brilliant Heart pounding intense read I couldn’t put down!!
Beth made my heart break at times she was such an inspiration character
I found Dr Connie to be an interesting character
I really enjoyed the characters
This was a very interesting thriller
What an amazing twists did not see that coming. Lee me away!!
A fantastic read

Queen of psychological thrillers, Helen Fields has done it again with her latest offering Watching You. From the very first page, the reader is thrown into a darkly disturbing death and the drama doesn’t let up for a moment.
With eight bodies and eight gruesome deaths, to unravel, we are reintroduced to Scotland finest detectives: Lively and Salter, accompanied by the super profiler Woolwine and what follows in an action-packed, nail biting gem of a story.
Multiple POV from the Watcher, victims and our heroes result in a twisty narrative that is impossible to put down.
Dark, unbelievably clever and emotionally taught, I devoured this in one setting, and am already eager to see what wonders Fields comes up with next!
Thanks you to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review.

Helen Fields never misses. She’s one of my favorite authors for a reason and Watching You only reminded me why. Her ability to mix chilling suspense with raw emotion is unmatched. From the very first chapter I was pulled into this dark and haunting story.
The plot is intense. A serial killer is stalking the streets of Edinburgh and the sense of urgency is real as each new body drops. I loved the dynamic between DS Lively and Dr Connie Woolwine. Watching them work against the clock added so much tension. But what really stood out to me was Beth Waterfall’s storyline. Her grief, her fear, her strength, it all hit hard. Knowing her daughter’s stalker might be back for her made everything feel even more personal and terrifying.
This one had me tense, emotional, and completely absorbed. Helen Fields knows how to write layered characters and truly sinister plots that stay with you. If you love smart, gripping thrillers with heart and edge, this book is it.

Watching you is a deeply suspenseful mystery in which a serial killer is at loose, committing opportunistic murders that seemingly have nothing in common. It takes the outstanding talent of profiler Connie Woolwine to link the deaths and set the detectives onto the correct path but even Connie can be mistaken. Another ingredient is the burgeoning romance between DS Sam Lively and surgeon Dr Beth Waterfall whose daughter Molly fell victim to a stalker. When these two threads become entwined, with the Watcher watching Beth, the situatI0n becomes full of tension and the suspense kept me reading to the twisty end. I have not read anything by Helen Fields before but, after reading Watching You, I will definitely read more. Helen's style brings the characters of DS Christie Salter, DS Sam Lively, profiler Dr Connie Woolwine and her assistant Brodie Baarda into sharp reality. I loved every one of this team of investigators for their quirky, distinctive personalities and can't wait to read more about them. Highly recommended to readers who enjoyed a great puzzle with lots of suspense.

Zoe: Set in the gloomy lanes of Edinburgh, a murderer lurks. When a corpse is discovered, it's just the tip of the iceberg. Seven more will soon follow. Following one body is another, then another. The savage deaths all appear unrelated, but it soon becomes clear a serial killer is on the loose - and targeting one victim’s grieving mother for their next kill.
They say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but I've never been one to play by the rules. Based on its dust jacket artwork, I suspected Watching You would fall into what I like to dub 'supermarket thrillers' - the throwaway reads you always pick up on offer at Asda and devour in a day on holiday, but roll your eyes at the implausible ending.
However, within a few chapters, I realised Fields had created something with much more substance than its cover indicates. It's an intense, fast-paced read, something you can certainly read in one sitting, but unlike its cover peers, the characters are well developed, and the twists and turns are believable.
The killer's presence looms throughout the entire novel, and despite the subject matter being quite grim, the story is character-driven rather than resorting to gore or shock tactics to get the plot going. If you're looking for a crime thriller that won't leave you frustrated this summer, grab a copy of Watching You when it's released on August 28.

Having read everything Helen Fields has ever written, I was so grateful to the publisher for this ARC copy. Needless to say, it did not disappoint.
Watching You is a deep psychological thriller that draws you in from the very first page. No spoilers here, but if you know Helen’s work, you’ll know you’re in for a twist — and this one delivers in spades. Fields crafts a tense, claustrophobic atmosphere, perfectly balancing character depth with an ever-tightening plot.
This is the kind of book that keeps you turning the pages late into the night, desperate to uncover the truth. A must-read for fans of intelligent, chilling thrillers and for anyone who enjoys being kept on their toes until the very last chapter.

This was such a good book. I loved the story and the writing so much. The characters were great and the story flowed smoothly. Will definitely read more books by this author in the future

I was unaware when I started reading that this is part of a police detective series, I will definitely be going back to read the first book. Gripping story with great twists, just something about the ending that jarred me so I’m giving it a 4⭐️ review.

Helen does it again!
Kept me enthralled by the drama.
A book with substance too.
Interesting outcome.
I would recommend!

Surgeon Beth Waterfall is struggling after her daughter succumbed to a vicious stalker and now he’s coming for her. Meanwhile, when multiple bodies turn up suspiciously, seemingly unconnected, it is down to DS Lively and his team, along with profiler Connie Woolwine to try and discover what is really going on.
Helen Fields is one of my favourite authors and I have especially enjoyed the Dr Woolwine novels. Having her investigate dark crimes alongside the characters from Edinburgh police was a great concoction. The characters are all interesting in their own rights, having a real depth behind them. This especially goes for the character of The Watcher, where the author manages to provoke a chilling portrayal of their inner thoughts and overall psyche.
The story is immersive throughout and moves a long at an even pace, intwining different narratives, while having a dark, eerie undercurrent. The writing style is very strong with clever twists and turns. I found the conclusion very interesting and enjoyed the authors note at the end. This was another thrilling book by this author overall and I will certainly recommend to current fans or ones yet to read anything by Helen Fields, she definitely remains one of my go to authors. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this copy in return for an honest review.

An absolute treat. I had this sitting in my waiting to be read folder for quite some time, like a precious jewel to be savoured and looked forward to. I was almost afraid to start it because I knew it’d only take me a day or so to read and then I’d be back waiting patiently for another to be written. Anyway I digress slightly, needless to say though I wasn’t disappointed, Helen is and remains one of my most favourite authors, for very good reason.
I was drawn straight into this book, the characters are mesmerisingly good and the narrative superb. The gore level is perfect, accurately descriptive but not excessive so that the seed is planted in your mind’s eye and you can control how far you take it. As always the science is perfect, incredibly accurate and explained in a very inclusive way so you feel equipped to follow the storyline from a privileged insider perspective.
There are quite a few nervous, heart pounding moments, to the point I had to read in shorter sections and allow myself recovery time for these. There are two wow, twist moments which sneaked up on me towards the end and shocked and delighted me in equal measures. All in all an excellent read, I’m only sorry I’ve finished it. More please.

This is a compelling read - very well-written with strong characters. I loved the Edinburgh setting and the dark, creepy atmosphere. A good plot with lots of twists and turns. The tension never let up as we hurtled towards the shocking ending. Highly recommended.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

👀 ARC REVIEW 👀
PUB DATE: Aug 27th 2025
My Rating : ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️💫 3.8 Hair Raising Stars
If you love police procedural crime thrillers that are dark and detailed and hold nothing back then save this post because you’re going to love this one !
Watching You is a crime thriller that has us following a forensic profiler DR Connie Woolvine & DS Lively and together they are trying to catch a serial killer.
With its multiple POV’s and one of them is The Watcher we are taken on a gruesome and descriptive hunt that will leave your stomach in knots.
Watching You started off really strong and I was cringing at times and holding my breath with every turn of the page as we counted down to the next victim .
The writing is good and full of rich detail that makes Helen Fields stand out as a crime writer as they come across as true crime .
At times it did get a little slow and the ending was not quite what I was hoping for , but upon reading the authors note I learned a little something that I can’t post as it would be a spoiler .
Overall I’m glad to have read this and it is part of a series but can totally be read as a stand alone .
Thank you NetGalley , Avon Books UK and Helen Fields for this white knuckled and gripping ARC 🙏

Another fantastic Connie Woolwine installment, this time drafted in to help solve a series of seemingly unrelated murders. It's tense and tackles some dark mental health issues but it's so well written, it's a very emotional read where I felt totally connected to the characters. Connie and Brodies relationship is unnerving and also feels like it's teetering on a cliff edge. Altogether a super read.

Watching You is another expertly crafted police procedural from Helen Fields, combining psychological insight with gripping suspense. Criminal psychologist Connie Woolwine and her partner Brodie Baarda are drawn into a chilling investigation involving three seemingly unconnected murders in Edinburgh. As familiar characters from Fields’ broader universe reappear—including DS Lively and DS Salter—longtime fans will enjoy the crossover, while new readers will find a taut and immersive narrative that stands strongly on its own.
Fields’ use of shifting timelines, layered perspectives, and emotionally resonant character work heightens the psychological tension throughout. The novel explores themes of grief, obsession, and vulnerability with nuance, particularly through the compelling subplot involving surgeon Beth Waterfall and her past trauma. Connie’s unique, empathic profiling methods contrast brilliantly with Lively’s hard-edged pragmatism, creating dynamic investigative interplay.
With sharp prose, a haunting atmosphere, and a truly unpredictable conclusion, Watching You is a standout instalment in Fields’ catalogue—both thought-provoking and unputdownable.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for the opportunity to read an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

This type of book is by far my favourite read. A murderer is on the lose and it’s the job of Connie, baarda and Carrie to find them before more people end up dead. This book is fast paced and kept me wanting to read more. There is a good dynamic between the team working to catch the killer and the character development is good I certainly had a sense of the characters in The book. It took me a while to put the names with the roles they played in The book especially as sometime the author referred to them by surname and sometime by Christian name but I got therein The end. Not in a million years will you be able to predict the ending. Thoroughly enjoyable and left me wanting to read more from this author. 💜

Watching You by Helen Fields is a gripping, dark, and thought-provoking thriller that kept me hooked from start to finish. Connie Woolwine, as always, is a tour de force—fierce, intelligent, and unapologetically complex. Alongside ex-police officer Brodie Baarda, she works with DS Lively and his partner to hunt down a potential serial killer before he strikes again.
Helen Fields masterfully balances the intensity of a police investigation with the vulnerability of a team driven to stop a murderer. Her character development is exceptional, deepening with each installment of the Connie Woolwine series and making me feel increasingly connected to them. The forensic detail, especially in neurology and psychological profiling, adds remarkable depth and credibility—clearly the result of meticulous research.
This book can be enjoyed as a stand-alone, but starting with The Shadow Man will give you the full scope of the character arcs and relationships.
Highly recommended. I really enjoyed this book.
With thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books for the much-appreciated ARC in exchange for an honest review.

gripping from the start to the finish. i love it when i read even the first page of a book and know im in, its got me already. its such an exciting feeling. books are just great. when you get a book like this they become wonderful things and it reminds you to be thankful to talent like Helen every day.
there is a killer and they are watching deep within the shadow of Edinburgh. the bodies are piling up but what is their connection, or whom?
it seems Beth is being watched. she lost her daughter tragically to a stalker, and it seems her wants to take her too. can the team stop this happening?
the wit that weaves through this book is just great, alongside a great team working together. they are clearly a team and i like getting to know their personalities too. it always helps me care more about a book when i truly root for a character or in this case a set of characters.
the banter with the team offers a lighter note to some of the darker and emotionally heart tugging moments to do with the case. it was so sad to hear the tale of both mother and daughter in this book. and even more sad because its almost too relevant to our time today and stories we see far too often now.
i love how the layout takes us to both the story from the Teams front but also the other( ill let you find that out but its a great if chilling time)
the tension and almost anxious state this book left me in was brilliant, lol. i was genuinely worried what was coming, happening next or would end up happening and this for me means i've enjoyed a thriller. i do love a good thriller when it can do that to me.
a tense, gripping and book to both feel for and run for. i enjoyed every moment and it refused to let me go all the way through.
i cant wait to see what this author has next up her sleeve and im crossing my fingers im lucky enough to read it.

Many thanks to netgalley, the author and the publisher for approving my request to read this book.
Oh my goodness, what did I just read?! I absolutely loved this fast paced, gritty, psychological thriller and I've never read an ending quite like this one, it absolutely fascinated me.
Watching You is extremely well crafted, very clever and had me gripped the entire way through, this ones not to be missed!

Bodies begin to appear in Edinburgh and before they know it, Police Scotland have 3 murders on their hands that need investigating and they have no idea where to start with any leads as any connections appear to be few and far between.
I thoroughly enjoyed this read from start to finish, it was full of suspense and unexpected twists which kept me guessing throughout. There were some excellent characters in the book, in particular Connie Woolwine, which I felt myself growing very attached to as the book progressed.
Helen Fields has written a fast paced, suspenseful page turner which kept me on my toes until the very end, and the final twist really took me by surprise. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this book and I would highly recommend! Thank you NetGalley for my ARC.

Whilst the murders mount up in Edinburgh, Dr Connie Woolwine and Brodie Baarda are on the cases with Connie a most unusual but likeable character brilliantly brought to life by Ms Fields.
However, the other main characters are superb with their black humour - Lively and Beth Waterfall. Sometimes I enjoy their interactions more than the story line. That makes Ms Fields' books such a joy to read.
Suffice it to say the cases are solved after a few gruesome scenes along the way, but I loved it!
Thanks to Net Galley and Avon Books UK for the chance to read and review.

I LOVED this. Connie Woolwine is absolutely one of my favourite characters encountered in any book I’ve ever read - she’s random, quirky, cool and just so unique. This book manages to bring out every emotion and is just unputdownable! And as for the ending - well I most certainly never saw that coming! Very grateful for the opportunity to preview this great thriller 🥰

Whoa. Watching You doesn’t just keep you guessing—it keeps you gripping the edge of your seat, flipping pages at 2AM like your life depends on it! From the very first chapter, Helen Fields constructs a layered mystery that unfolds like a Russian nesting doll with every revelation nesting inside another. Just when you think you’ve solved it, another twist blindfolds you and spins you around. And the final reveal? Absolutely breathtaking. Watching You has one of those endings that sends a chill down your spine and makes you rethink everything you read!

First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Helen Sarah Fields, and Avon Books UK for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
Always eager to explore the writing of Helen Sarah Fields, I gladly accepted this ARC. Fields delivers another strong thriller that mixes a new protagonist with one she has effectively used in the past. A killer has been targeting a number of individuals, apparently at random. A dedicated police detective in Edinburgh works with a well-known forensic scientist to find a connection. A surgeon seeks to assist, while juggling her own traumatic experience. Something is sure to come together, given the right moment and dedication to the crime. Fields adds tension to this stellar thriller to keep the reader engaged.
A killer waits the in shadows on the streets of Edinburgh. They are seeking the ideal victim. When they strike, it will be the first of a number of killings, eight in total. The killings seem random and disjointed, which baffles many.
While the bodies begin piling up, Edinburgh’s Major Incident Team is scratching their heads. DS Lively has a feeling that there must be a connection between those who have fallen victim to their killer, but nothing seems to group them. Even forensic profiler, Dr. Connie Woolwine sees it, but trying to prove it could take a great deal of time.
An established surgeon, Beth Waterfall, has just come out of her grief for a daughter who fell victim to a long-term stalker. Now, the pendulum has swung and Beth is the next victim. DS Lively has befriended her and they work through this issue, as the serial killer hunt intensifies. Helen Sarah Fields builds the tension effectively for all to enjoy.
I have enjoyed many of Helen Sarah Fields’ past novels, always finding that they tick the essential boxes for a strong thriller. As the narrative lays out the groundwork for the story, the reader can piece things together. That said, the bouncing in timelines did less for me than I feel Fields would have hoped, leaving me grasping to try assembling all the pieces. String characters helped enrich the story, particularly with the return of Dr. Connie Woolwine, though she plays less impactful a role than I have seen of her before. Twists in the plot keep the reader on edge and guessing, while never quite keeping the reader fully in the dark. I am eager to see where Helen Sarah Fields takes readers next!
Kudos, Madam Fields, for a great thriller that took a little time to capture my full attention.

I've read and loved 'The Institution' and 'Profile K' by Helen Fields so I was excited to receive a proof copy of her latest book. This was a gripping, serial killer thriller which I loved.
Bodies start to be found in the streets of Edinburgh. The brutal murders look like the work of a serial killer but what connects each case?
Renowned surgeon Beth Waterfall is grieving for her beloved only daughter after she was harrased and stalked. Could something connect these incidents and will Beth Waterfall be the next victim…
The characters are so well written. I instantly connected to Beth Waterfall and D.S Lively and felt invested in their lives. It was great to see some familiar characters too (Connie Woolvine from The Institution and Midnight Blue from Profile K) I enjoyed the dual time line and gradually finding out more about the 'watcher' and the lives of the central characters. There are some great twists towards the end which would have been impossible to predict. If you enjoy well written crime thrillers I would recommend this. I need to go back and read Helen Fields' back list now.

Watching You is another gripping addition to Helen Fields’ impressive catalogue of crime fiction. Part of the Connie Woolwine series, this novel pulled me in from page one and didn’t let go. As a longtime fan of Fields and someone who’s read most of her backlist, I was was excited to dive into Watching You, and it did not disappoint!
Set in the gritty streets of Edinburgh, Watching You delivers a taut and atmospheric police procedural with psychological depth. Fields expertly balances suspense and pacing, gradually revealing the chilling scope of the crimes. The killer’s presence is a constant, unsettling force throughout the story, sometimes glimpsed through brief, disturbing inner monologues or quiet, voyeuristic scenes that truly made my skin crawl.
The novel reunites criminal psychologist Connie Woolwine and her partner, Brodie Baarda, who are brought in by Police Scotland to consult on a string of disturbing and unrelated murders in Edinburgh. It’s a case that kicks off fast, and longtime readers will love how this book brings together characters from across Fields’ universe. Detective Lively, a gruff, no-nonsense detective from one of Fields' earlier series, plays a major role in this narrative and I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about his character and seeing a bit more of his human side.
Told through shifting timelines and perspectives, the story is layered but never confusing. Fields’ writing is crisp and clear, and she has a remarkable talent for weaving character development into the fabric of the narrative without slowing the momentum. Her characters are emotionally rich and always feel real, and I love that she builds strong, meaningful connections between them without relying on unnecessary romance, which is a big plus for me in a thriller.
Watching You stands strong on its own, but if you’ve read Fields’ earlier books, the ending packs even more excitement. There are hints that two much-loved characters might be returning in the next installment. I’m already looking forward to what’s coming next!
Many thanks to NetGalley, Avon, and Helen Fields for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

Such a good book. Lively is a great character, so glad to have more of him. He is very likeable and I find myself rooting for him, especially when he meets Beth at the hospital and realises how much he likes her. And it seems like she is going to be really good for him too. Helen Fields writes so well that I completely empathised with Molly when she was suffering from being stalked and you could feel the tension and fear for her and Beth as the incidents escalated. Against a backdrop of murders where there was seemingly no connection, we were introduced to the character Carl and learnt about his relationships with his poorly father and bullying mother. We also get more from Connie Woolwine and her strange ways of interpreting events as a profiler. I find her a fascinating character especially how she gets Brodie to go along with her ways of re-enacting crimes.
The way the reader is lead down various paths as the story develops is clever and the twist when it comes near the end is shocking!
(I like the nod to other certain characters too- phew!)

Is there any better feeling than being able to sit down and read a new book from an author whose work you love? That is exactly how I feel when I start on. anew book by Helen Fields and, with Watching You, it's a book that brought a few huge smiles to my face, for reasons that will become clear to anyone who reads it. From the very first page you can feel that tension and suspense start to blossom as we are thrown immediately into the sphere of the book's very first victim.
I say first as it appears that Ms Fields has, as is often the case, developed a touch of bloodlust in this latest offering. Or at least, one of her characters has, and it is just the way we like it. As victims, and murders, go, it's not the most intense or grizzly of dispatches we'll have read at the pen of this particular author, but it is still one that makes its mark, largely as we are treated to the final conscious thoughts of the soon to be deceased. And the intrigue only grows from there.
The reason for smile number one? Well, not only do we find ourselves back in a very familiar location, but there are, within the first couple of chapters, some very familiar names on hand to help this particularly disturbing case along. And I am not talking only of Connie Woolwine and Brodie Baarda. The two have been engaged by Police Scotland to help with a trio of murders in Edinburgh, a tantalisingly gleeful prospect that delivers the Helen Fields series mash-up we all really really wanted. Yep, Connie and Baarda find themselves working alongside DS Lively and DS Salter from the truly brilliant Perfect series, and the combination of the two worlds - the gruff sarcasm of Lively, the overt dominance of Detective Superintendent Overbeck, and the straight talking, profile driven insights of the wonderfully unique Connie Woolwine - really does make this book an absolute joy that I just tore through.
I really enjoyed the way in which Helen Fields has played out this book. I don't want to say too much about the plot directly, but the action moves back and forth in time, bringing to bear the past of one of the characters who is pivotal to the story, surgeon Beth Waterfall, and the tragedy that befell her beloved daughter, Molly. Throughout the scenes, though not overly graphic, Helen Fields manages to convey the psychological impact of a sustained campaign of stalking, and the near impotence of the victim in being able to do anything about it. How this ties in with the present day is one of the great mysteries of the book, and it had my mind churning with all kinds of ideas about what might be going on. It certainly serves to keep you on edge as it seems the stalker has moved the focus of their attention, and those close call moments between perpetrator and victim keep the pacing and urgency spot on.
As for the main case, the three murders that precipitate Connie's return to Edinburgh, they are as different as can be, not only by victim, but also by nature of dispatch, and it is hard to see how they can be linked. Once again, we are treated to a real examination of psychological profiling, explored through Connie's rather unique methodology, as she and Baarda try to draw out a suspect profile from next to no evidence. That is one of the real draws for me to this series. Connie is such a brilliant character, the ways in which she identifies with the victims, speaks to them as someone who truly cares for their feelings, no matter that she might draw strange looks from those around you, or that the victim no longer hears. There is a self confidence, and a magnetism about her character that just keeps me glued to the page, and a compassion expressed through sometime unconventional methods.
Contrast this with DS Lively and it really is a chalk and cheese kind of investigation. Lively is, as long term readers of the author will know, a bit more of a gruff, no nonsense, non sufferer of fools kind of cop and Connie's fru-fru methods of getting to a result couldn't be further from his personal style. He has a soft streak in him, but that is often hidden behind a thick veil of sarcasm. We see far more of that soft side in this book, and it was rather heartwarming. There is a brilliant working relationship between him and Salter, and a barb laden respect between him and Overbeck, the reasons for which constant readers understand. With a whole cast of fantastically observed characters, I really did find myself drawn into the fates of the characters, feeling sad for some of the victims, even those who perhaps weren't as sympathetic as you might expect.
And as for the conclusion ... well, this book has two big surprises in store. The main twist, and it is one heck of a jaw dropper, really did catch me unawares. Absolutely brilliant and delivered in such a calm and unassuming way that I wasn't sure whether to grin, nod in appreciation or weep for the reality of what had come to pass. And then, just when we think things are on an almost even keel, there is a moment we didn't know we were waiting for, but that readers will revel in none the less. I know I did.
Another absolutely brilliant addition to my ever growing Helen Fields library. Fans of either series are going to love it. It's not essential to have read any other books to enjoy this book, but you're missing a treat if you've not at least dipped a toe into either series yet. And that ending will mean so much more if you have. Highly recommended and I cannot wait to see what the future holds from this author.

3.5 stars rounded up. A good book, lot''s of detail and my first by Helen Sarah Fields. It has been well thought out and gives you a few twists with lots of drama. I wan't to keen on the dual time lime but that's just a personal preference. Could be a bit confusing for some but not overly. I felt the pace was a bit slow at times and I struggles to get into it but once I did it was well worth it. I enjoyed the personal relationships that form the story and give a bit more interest.
Thank you NetGalley, Helen Sarah Fields and Avon Books Uk for the ARC.

I was so excited to receive an early copy of this book I could hardly contain myself! The book was incredible, with a great, fast-paced story, and a few twists I had to read twice over. The formatting was a little tricky in places, but of course that’s to be expected with an early copy. Thanks so much for letting me get the chance to read it!

Such a brilliant book - gripping, fantastically developed and so well written! I would definitely recommend it. The characters were so compelling to read about too.

I absolutely loved this book. I enjoyed every minute. I couldn’t put it down. I was completely engrossed.
Gritty, twisty plot, tense, fast paced, murders and stalkers-what’s not to love.
I just loved all the characters. They are brilliantly written making the story so vivid with the detailed descriptions and the suspense that pulls you in from the first page. You’re kept guessing until the end, an ending that you don’t see coming. A emotional rollercoaster of a read. Just brilliant. I can’t wait to read more from @helenfields_author
Definitely recommend if you enjoy police procedural thrillers. This one doesn’t disappoint and is well worth a read.

The story is told via alternating chapters of the investigation with the perspective of that of The Watcher which is chillingly powerful. It's very fast paced, lots of twists and turns and very shocking at times! If you like thrillers, this one's for you!
Synopsis: On the dark streets of Edinburgh, a killer is waiting ... When a body is found, it is only the beginning. Soon there will be seven more ... In the city’s hospital, renowned surgeon Beth Waterfall is grieving ... Her beloved only daughter fell prey to a vicious stalker a year previously – and now he’s coming for her too.
Many thanks to #AvonBooksUK #NetGalley and #WatchingYou for providing me with an E-ARC of this fantastic book!

This is a great crime thriller.
DS Lively and the team have their hands full with several murders that have happened quickly in Edinburgh. Profiler Dr Connie Woolwine is brought in to help and as they’ve worked together before, the sharp comments between Woolwine and Lively soon begin.
Woolwine has some unusual methods when profiling and spending time with the dead in the mortuary, is just one of them.
The team are struggling to find a connection with the victims but as the reader, we have chapters from a deranged man, and can start to piece it together.
All is not what it seems though and there’s some great twists in this story.
This is a great crime thriller that I’d highly recommend.
Thanks to Avon Books UK for the opportunity to read this book.

Riddled with twists and suspense😲
Totally tricky and eerily engrossing. This Edinburgh-set murder mystery was a real rollercoaster ride of emotions, with seemingly totally random and unconnected victims. Each killing method different and no clear motive until it all comes crashing into focus in a terribly exciting action climax. Captivated by the way it kept me guessing would there be a next victim and why. I felt bombarded by twists toward the story's end and loved it!
I also got really caught up in Mollie's despair at her unraveling life when she's attacked on the internet. These days, drawing attention that could result in internet trolling is a fate devoutly to be avoided but Mollie can't fathom why she's targeted and just can't get a break: reporting it to the police got her nowhere.
The author comes up with such fascinating psychological suspense in her plots. Not the first of her books I've read and definitely won't be the last!
Thanks to Avon Books UK and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
Review shared on 8/25/25 on Waterstones, Goodreads and Bookbub, and with Barnes & Noble and BAM. To be shared on kobo and Google Play upon publication.

I first came across Connie Woolwine and Baarda in The Institution and was completely hooked, so I couldn’t wait to dive into Watching You. Helen Fields doesn’t disappoint the writing is sharp, atmospheric and full of tension. Connie and Baarda make such a compelling duo, and I love how their dynamic continues to develop in this book. The plot kept me on edge, dark and unsettling in all the best ways, and I found myself racing through chapters because I needed to know what would happen next. A brilliant, addictive read. Helen Fields is fast becoming one of my favourite crime authors.

This one felt like reading a really good BBC murder procedural. Think Happy Valley, or one of those brooding David Tennant series where everything’s gray and tense and someone definitely isn’t making it to the finale. Watching You reads like that. It’s gritty, compelling, and quietly addictive.
The pacing works. It moves steadily without ever dragging, and the investigation threads hold their shape all the way through. I saw both of the big twists coming, but only shortly before they landed, which still made them fun. The final reveal, though. That one felt fresh. It’s not a twist I’ve seen before, and that alone earns it points.
The tone is exactly what I wanted. Tense, but not grim. Character-driven, but not overworked.
Over all, very solid. Very readable. Definitely recommended if you’re craving something that hits like your favorite British detective show and doesn’t overstay its welcome.

This book is everything I’ve come to expect from her: chilling, clever, and completely addictive. From page one, I was hooked. The atmosphere is intense, the pacing is perfect, and the characters are so vivid they practically step off the page.
There’s a haunting sense of unease that builds with every chapter, and just when you think you’ve got a handle on things, Helen pulls the rug out from under you in the best possible way. She knows how to write a thriller that gets under your skin and stays there.
You don’t just read her stories you feel them. The emotional depth, the sharp twists, the intelligence behind the plot... she never misses.
If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers that are as beautifully written as they are tense and unpredictable, Watching You is a must-read. Helen Sarah Fields has done it again.

It begins with one dead body and then two more, nothing seems to connect them. There is one woman and 2 men all killed in different ways and in different locations but DSI Lively and forensic profiler Connie Woolwine know they need to find something . One clue slowly leads them to believe these are all being done by one person but why? Finally things begin to clear with the help of Dr. Waterfall putting her life in danger from a killer who stalked her daughter to death.
A great read although a bit over the top. If you just want a thrill read this one is for you. Fast paced and suspenseful it keeps to going page after page.

A body is discovered at a popular landmark in Edinburgh and the murder investigation team start their searches, but then there's another, and another, all different and seemingly unconnected and the team are struggling to find any clues to lead them to the perpetrator, so the police decide to draft in forensic psychologist Dr Connie Woolwine and her partner Brodie Baarda to speed things up. Meanwhile Dr Beth Waterfall is still mourning the loss of her daughter Molly to a vile stalker the previous year and it now looks like he's turning his attention to her. Can the team catch the killer and is Beth going to be The Watcher's next victim?
Watching You is the latest in the Connie Woolwine series, it can be read as a standalone but they are better read in order to understand the background of the characters. Having already read the first two I was looking forward to seeing how this one compared and was not disappointed. This one drew me in and captured my attention from the off and, once again, Fields delivered dark and dangerous by the bucketload. It's a fast paced read which I devoured in two days, told from various perspectives, including The Watcher, over past and present timelines. The characters are authentic and believeable and I love the bond that the team have, including Woolwine and Baarda. There is much intrigue and mystery within this story and I was floored when the murderer was finally revealed, definitely a twist you won't see coming! Another excellent edge of your seat read from Fields and I hope there's more to come from this series.
I'd like to thank Avon Books and Netgalley for inviting me to read this, I will post my review on Goodreads now and Amazon on publication day.

A tricky clever and twisty hunt for a vicious killer. Know up front that this is gory. Know also that you might guess the identity of the villain but that this will not matter because the plot is more about the chase than it is the naming. The characters are well written and believable. I liked how Fields made Edinburgh a player. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. No spoilers.

Another absolutely brilliant Helen Fields book. I just could not put it down until I finished it at 3am! Full of twists and turns and well crafted characters. I can’t wait for her next book!! It’s 5 stars from me.

Watching You was an intense journey, it was fast paced, thrilling and I found it hard to put down. The twist at the end was not something I saw coming, and was completely shocked by.
I really enjoyed the main characters in the book, Connie Woolwine is a very intriguing person. She has a very unique way of working. I'm always left wondering what she'll do next and why her mind works the way it does.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it. It's a fast paced, well written, brilliant novel.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Helen Fields returns with another5 star read.
A dark creepy, intense page turner!
Dr Connie Woolwine is a fascinating character, a unique profiler, can she throw light on this series of brutal murders, they seem unconnected, but are Connie, DS Lively and DS Salter missing something?
This author creates characters who bounce off one another with easy banter, there are the familiar characters of DS Salter , DS Lively and Connie’s side kick Baarda.
Dr Beth Waterfall is a surgeon, she has had trauma in her life concerning her daughter Molly, a gifted artist, she feels she is being watched.
Connie uses her unique profiling skills to connect with the victims, she talks to them, touches them, as if they can hear her, she cares not what others think, only about drawing what she can from the three victims.
We see a softer side in this story to DS lively who is known and loved for his gruffness and sarcasm.
This book was unputdownable, full of twists, turns and surprises. A brilliant read..
Many thanks to Net Galley and Avon Books Uk For an ARC of this book in exchange for a review.

This is a well-rounded police procedural that kept me entertained for hours. The plot was slow to build, but when it did it was tense and exciting. Overall, I'd say this is a winner.
Many thanks for my gifted copy.

Watching You was a fast paced thriller which kept me turning the pages until the end. Having been familiar with Connie Woolvine and other characters in previous books it was great to see them return.
I found the writing to be excellent, the characters were so well developed I couldn’t help but feel connected to them in some way. I particularly liked the way that Lively was different in this book and am glad that his story turned out the way it did, I liked the way he was happy but still grumpy with it all. The ending I found to be very interesting and was a very good concept.
You can read this as a stand-alone, but I think it would help to read previous works to get a true idea about Connie and the way she works a a profiler.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this ebook in exchange for my honest review.

I have discovered Helen Fields writing fairly recently but have very quickly become addicted to her books. This is no exception, her books are just like watching a crime drama on tv, but better.

I loved it. Book three in the Dr Connie Woolwine Series, although she also made an appearance in The Profile. Set in Edinburgh Forensic Profiler Connie and her partner Brodie Baarda are working with the MIT we usually see in the DI Callanach series. Luc and Ava are still away so DS Lively and the team, overseen by Superintendent Overbeck, are dealing with a number of seemingly random killings. Told in dual timeline and multiple POVs this is a fantastic, gripping and complex police procedural.
Briefly, with the killer still at large the team are struggling to make any connection between the victims. Connie is convinced that they have an active serial killer but even she is finding it difficult to prove. Meanwhile visiting a victim in hospital Lively meets trauma surgeon Beth Waterfall and there is a spark between them. Beth is going through her own anguish over the death of her daughter Molly ‘Mol’ who had been viciously stalked and the stalker has now turned their attention to Beth.
Another dark and twisted story from this author with a strong cast of characters and a really brilliant plot - it had me completely fooled and that really doesn’t happen often. Connie is such a good character, she is clever but very unconventional in her approach to getting into the mind of the killer, and the victims! What an excellent, edge of the seat read.

Set in beautiful Edingburgh this is a story of a serial killer.
It is so well told that I had a bit of shock when I discovered the identity of who the killer was and the story was a joy to read.
I was hooked from the start and for me this was a one sit read.
I loved it

An extremely clever and terrifying book. Helens writing was compelling and concise as always and the story was engrossing from the first few pages. It all seems clear where the story is going, but don't be deceived. It really does make you question everything!

A gripping police procedural set in the beating heart of Edinburgh that has plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing throughout. Brilliantly written, the plot was engaging and unfolded at pace. Highly recommended. Thank you to NetGalley, Avon Books UK and the author for the chance to review.

This book was absolutely insane and mind blowing! It’s quite fast paced and sometimes slow paced but I don’t know if it’s because I’m in a reading slump. For the story to be held in Edinburgh made me more familiar with the places that’s been mentioned and I could really picture what’s going on. The author’s writing style was actually easy to follow through too which I tend to not know what’s going on when reading a detective book. I quite liked Connie’s character, she’s weird in her own way but she’s really good at her job too. The twist in the ending surprised me actually, I did not see that one coming and throughout the book I was so certain it was that specific someone but overall, this was definitely a gripping thriller and it makes you look back twice to see if anyone is following you.

This book is amazing & a real page turner! There were twists and turns that made it so fun to read! I highly recommend!

One of my favourite authors, it's always going to be a hard hitting crime story. Once I picked this up, I did not want to put it back down. Set as always in Edinburgh, Dr Connie Woolwine is once again called on to help the Major Investigations Team with a murder investigation. Along with partner Brodie Baarda, Connie is at the heart of solving three seemingly unrelated murders. In the continued absence of Luc and Ava, DS Lively takes the helm, a somewhat softer version of himself as the story progresses. Superintendent Overbeck is not softening and the banter is great. As well as the murders, surgeon Beth Waterfall is being stalked by the same stalker who caused the death of her daughter Molly. It's a tangled web. As we get to know the characters, the outcome is even more shocking. I did enjoy the teaser at the end that hinted of the next book. Can't wait. #netgalley #watchingyou

One of the things I like about a Helen Fields novel is that no character is safe. She doesn't hesitate to kill off characters, even if they have played a significant role in a series. In this, her latest in the Connie Woolwine series, she has paired her with characters from her DI Callanach series, and it's anybody's guess which characters will survive.
With two of the lead detectives out of the picture, forensic profiler Connie Woolwine and her associate, Brodie Baarda, are called to Edinburgh to help with an investigation. As the body count mounts, Connie is convinced there is a serial killer on the loose. With little forensic evidence or a pattern to go on, she works with DS Lively to try to track down the killer. Lively is developing a relationship with surgeon Beth Waterfall, who is still recovering from the death of her daughter, and who may be the killer's next victim. It's up to Connie and her team to catch the killer before they strike again.
This book is quintessentially Helen Fields: dark and twisty, with every character in danger of being killed. Fields does an excellent job of keeping the tension going from beginning to end. This is a good test for Connie's skills and expertise in yet another gripping psychological thriller. 4/5 stars.
Thank you, NetGalley and Avon, for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. The publication date is August 28, 2025.

There is a killer loose on the streets of Edinburgh! Who is it? What led to these incidents? How are they connected? The Police with Dr Connie Woolvine need to keep their wits about themselves during their investigation of the case and examine the clues to discover the culprit. However, the clues lead them to Dr Beth Waterfall and it would appear she will be the next victim. It was full of twists and turns, gripping, gritty, heart stopping, pacy and unputdownable.

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! This book is so intense, thrilling, and completely unputdownable! Helen Sarah Fields at her absolute best! From the very first chilling scene on the dark streets of Edinburgh, I was hooked, and the tension never let up.
The plot is razor-sharp, following a series of brutal murders that at first seem unconnected but soon reveal a disturbing pattern. Every twist caught me off guard, and just when I thought I had it figured out, Fields surprised me again.
I loved the mix of characters. Dr. Connie Woolwine is such a fascinating protagonist. Her sharp mind, empathy, and unconventional approach make her unlike any other profiler I’ve read. DS Lively and the rest of the team, Salter and Overbeck especially, added so much balance, creating a dynamic investigative group I couldn’t get enough of. And Beth Waterfall, the grieving mother and brilliant surgeon, added a deeply emotional layer that kept me rooting for her survival.
Despite the number of characters, it never once felt overwhelming—each one was vivid, well-developed, and emotionally engaging. I found myself genuinely connected to them, which made the stakes even higher.
Edinburgh itself became almost another character, its dark and atmospheric streets setting the perfect backdrop for the hunt.
This is a masterclass in crime fiction - heart-pounding, deeply emotional, and endlessly gripping. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. If you love thrillers with clever twists, compelling characters, and writing that keeps you on the edge of your seat, Watching You is a must-read. Unforgettable book!
My copy of this book was provided by NetGalley and Avon for review purposes. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This certainly grabbed my attention from the first few pages and kept me guessing throughout with all the twists and turns that completely led me up the wrong path! The result was that the ending was a total shock, as all good murder mysteries should be. Thanks to Helen Fields for an excellent read.

Another brilliant outing for Dr. Connie Woolwine(who I love) and Brodie Baarda. This book has everything you want in a read:a chilling killer, strong police procedural detail, love, and a great plot.
I enjoy how the author brings back familiar characters, and although this is part of a series, it works perfectly well as a standalone.
Chapters are told from multiple points of view, including The Watcher,Molly, and others.
The most chilling parts are the ones that take us inside the murders-they are gripping and upsetting in equal measure.
The plot feels fresh, with several standout moments and an outstanding.twist at the end.
I don't want to give anything away, but I liked that the author explains the medical reasons,it definitely shocked me that this is a thing.
This is a clear your schedule read. You won't want to put it down.
Thanks to Netgalley and Avon Books UK for the Arc.

I have to admit, I found the beginning of this book a real challenge. The constant shifts between perspectives – Lively, Connie, the victims, the Watcher and Mol – left me feeling as though I never had time to properly settle into anyone’s voice. The chapters were short and sharp, but instead of creating pace, they pulled me out of the story each time. I felt as though I was being asked to juggle too much too quickly, which meant I couldn’t connect with the characters in the way I usually can with Helen Fields’ books.
That said, once I hit the halfway mark, something clicked and I felt more anchored. The narrative steadied, the threads began to weave together, and suddenly I couldn’t put it down. From that point on, I was fully invested, and the tension built beautifully. I especially thought Mol’s story was devastating. The way an ordinary life could be upended by a single random person was terrifying in its simplicity, and it left me with a lingering unease. That part felt painfully real, and it was written with a sharpness that stuck with me long after I finished.
As a long-time fan of the DI Callanach books, I was curious about how this one would tie into that universe. Luke’s name is mentioned only in passing, but there’s a flicker towards the end that felt like a deliberate nod, almost as though Fields was planting a seed for what’s to come. I’ve been waiting for his return, and that tiny allusion gave me a bit of hope that he hasn’t been forgotten.
The twist, when it came, was excellent. I hadn’t worked it out at all, and it landed perfectly. It was clever without being outlandish, and it tied everything together. I really appreciated that feeling of surprise, especially after such a rocky start.
Overall, I’d call this a good read, though not an easy one to begin with. The first half tested my patience, but once I felt settled, it paid off. It’s not my favourite Helen Fields novel, but it did remind me why I enjoy her writing – the mix of dark themes, human vulnerability, and sharp plotting. If only the opening had been steadier and less fragmented, this could have been a real standout for me.

3.5 stars
Wow! Helen Fields and Dr Connie have done it again! There’s a serial killer and a stalker on the loose in Edinburgh. The twists had twists in this book. I always enjoy when we get to catch up with the gang from the Callanach series. It took a village to solve this mystery, and I was there for it from start to finish!

Surgeon Beth Waterfall is grieving. A year ago her daughter committed suicide after being stalked online and now it looks as though he is coming for her.
The police in Edinburgh are worried as more bodies are found with no visible connection.
DS Lively and a forensic profiler, Dr Connie Woolwine are called in to help. They know there is a serial killer out there but they need to find him and fast as Beth could be the next victim.

This book has plenty of twists and turns throughout the storyline.
The main focus of the story being on DS Lively and forensic profiler Dr Connie Woolwine hunting a serial killer. The story follows alternating chapters of the investigation which I felt left each narrative area with you wanting to know more.
The ending had lots of unforeseen twists and turns which keep you guessing and I would not have seen coming. This was a dark suspenseful thriller which I enjoyed. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC of this book.

Wow, what a book. I loved this. Set in Edinburgh, love a wee Scottish book. (No spoilers here). Police Scotland, murders, stalkers, it’s all happening. I love all the main characters and their relationships with each other, but what I wasn’t expecting was that massive twist at the end. Just as my brain was recovering from that, It was hit by another twist. Helen Fields is a great author. I’ve read The Profiler by her also, and that was brilliant too. Watching You would make a great police drama/movie. I definitely recommend. 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Phew—this one is a gripping read!
There’s a killer on the loose in Edinburgh. A body is found, and Beth Waterfall and her team of surgeons fight to save the victim’s life, but to no avail. Soon after, a second body turns up at Jupiter Artland—this one unrecognisable. But that’s just the start… more bodies will follow.
Who is The Watcher? Why is he watching Beth Waterfall? Beth has already lost her daughter, Molly, to a stalker. They could never prove anything—the stalker had been very clever at hiding his identity. Now Beth herself is being targeted. Could the two cases be linked?
DS Christie Salter, DS Sam Lively, forensic profiler Dr Connie Woodwine, and ex-Met officer Brodie Baarda must race against time to find the killer before he strikes again.
I absolutely loved Connie Woodwine and Brodie Baarda together—their sharp minds and quick banter made for some of my favourite moments. DS Lively was another standout for me. He starts out grumpy and closed-off, but gradually changes when something new enters his life, and I really enjoyed that transformation.
The story alternates between past and present, giving us Molly’s perspective as she deals with the relentless fear and frustration of being stalked. These sections are incredibly well written—they capture the helplessness when the police can’t act without evidence, and they highlight the dark side of social media and the devastating effect it can have on someone’s life. As well as Beth as she picks up the pieces and deals with things.
Other chapters are told from The Watcher’s point of view as the killings occur. These scenes are intense, chilling, and expertly build the tension. Meanwhile, we follow the police investigation and Connie’s profiling work—only the killer leaves no trace behind. The suspense ramps up as the end draws near, with curveballs that you absolutely won’t see coming. I found myself picking my jaw up off the floor more than once.
Be prepared for emotion, shocks, and moments where you’ll be holding your breath, fearing the worst. I couldn’t put this book down—it kept me hooked from start to finish.
I have an inkling about two characters who appear near the end, and I’m crossing my fingers I’m right. Either way, this was a fantastic, edge-of-your-seat read.
Thank you to #Netgalley and @AvonBooks for an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest, and fair, review, all thoughts and opinions are my own and have not been influenced in any way.

WOW, What a story, Helen Fields has written an amazing story that unfortunately could be true, it has a plot that seems straight forward of a killer stalker but maybe there is more than meets the eye.
Set in Edinburgh there are some random killings that don’t seem to be linked so the unique Dr Connie Woolwine and her colleague Baarda are called in with the hope she can use her special skills to try and find out if there is any links. Watching you, although it has reoccurring characters from previous stories it works perfectly as a standalone novel and I look forward to see what will develop between Connie & Baarda in future stories.
