I think this is a super cute book! The illustrations are adorable. All the different expressions of love are so sweet. The ways that dogs and babies similarly interact with their environments are humorous. I would definitely suggest this book for any love-book seeking family!

Dog Loves Baby is my first Natalie Nelson book however I am now eager to read her other books. This book follows a dog and baby pair through their exploration of Valentines Day and trying to figure out what love is. The story highlights many of both dog and baby’s shared favourite things and questions if they are love. It was a fun read and there was many a giggle from my students as I read it to them.
The vibrant and contrasting colours and lineless art style throughout this board book really pop and create a lot of visual interest for the children you are reading to. All of the characters depicted in this book are quite diverse in both gender and skin tone/race, as well as a few different breeds of dogs in some pages.
All in all a fun little thought provoking read that helps children think about what love means for them. When I read this to my class we discussed what makes us feel loved and how we show love to others, as well as setting out to draw pictures of the things that make us feel loved, I think this would be a great activity for Valentines Day as well as any point in the year when wanting to focus on teaching kindness.

We have stocked several of the other books by this author including Dog's First Christmas! It was a great seller for us last holiday season - I am so excited to see the series is expanding to Valentine's day! I love the illustration style used in Dog Loves Baby and the paralells between what baby loves and what the dog loves! Will be such a cute addition to our Valentines display in 2026.
