Caught in a Cold War Trap by Miller Caldwell is set during the 1960’s, the Cold War era. It is a book about how easy it can be to be taken advantage of, to say the least. If you happen to be naive, consequences can be dire. It is about a young man named Robert Harvie, who had an interest in languages and made a pen pal of a Russian woman who encouraged him to learn the Russian language. He was a natural with language and became fluent. When he went to college, he was given a “scholarship” from Russia for $1000 per year, to help him with expenses. Naively, he did not realize there would be strings attached to the gift.
The story is easy to follow and the characters are very real. It is interesting to read a story about a time before cell phones and how people communicated back then. It would be a very different ending, I think, in the modern age of instant and constant information. It was a fun read. I would like to thank Netgalley for the prepublication copy to read and review.
