Description

The thrilling new historical adventure in the Master of War series. Sir Thomas Blackstone must travel into enemy lands with a price on his head as he seeks to secure alliances and gold for the Plantagenets' war with France.

1368. Amidst the Hundred Years' War, alliances must be brokered. The Duke of Clarence, second son of King Edward III, journeys from Paris to marry the daughter of the powerful Lord of Milan. Little does he know that he is heading into a trap.

Luckily the Duke is preceded on the road to Milan by Sir Thomas Blackstone, Master of War, on an urgent mission of his own. Blackstone must get his hands on the gold the Prince of Wales needs to wage successful war in France.

But there is a price on Blackstone's head, and assassins willing to risk everything to claim it before he even gets to Milan. He must outwit a succession of ever deadlier enemies, and the Master of War has other foes to conquer: the ambitions of his son Henry, who has inherited his father's knack of getting into scrapes. Scrapes that could end in a hangman's noose...

David Gilman is one of two authors I'll put other books down to read. Rage of Swords is no exception. It has all the action and adventure you could want in an historical fiction novel. I eagerly await the next Blackstone novel. He cannot write them fast enough.

Fans of David Gilman will not be disappointed. He remains one of the country’s foremost masters of historical fiction.
Unlike many who are stuck in the Ancient Rome genre his Master of War novels are based in fourteenth century Europe. In itself a refreshing change
Whilst I would recommend reading the novels in chronological order you dip in and out as each novel works as a standalone

I have found with this series of David Gilman books and his main character, Thomas Blackstone, it’s almost like being in reality TV than reading a historical novel such is the way you get immersed in the whole storyline and action. The Master of War books, for me, are a masterpiece in historical fiction.

An excellent story about Thomas Blackstone (the Master of War) and his son Henry in Europe in the 1300s. Good character development, good plot pace and plenty of action. You get a real sense of how brutal the battles were during this period and how loyalties could change quickly. A good story about soldiers trying to do the right thing under very difficult circumstances. An excellent read.
