Description

A Bike Is Not Just a Bike is the inspiring story of how the ordinary bike came to represent freedom for women and girls.

In the 1880s, a bike was just a bike—unless you were a girl. Then it was considered dangerous, unladylike, even scandalous. But some dared to ride anyway. Pedal by pedal, they defied expectations. Riding a bike became a revolutionary act offering independence, challenging fashion norms and moving women one step closer to the right to vote.

This lyrical celebration honors the fearless women who refused to stay in their lane and spotlights modern-day heroes like Ayesha McGowan and Dr. Lynnea C. Salvo. Complete with historical footnotes, A Bike Is Not Just A Bike celebrates girls riding everywhere and moves us all toward freedom, equity, and joy.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is such a wonderful book. The history of women and bicycles and how women found freedom from riding them is told so wonderfully in this book. And the pictures are very well done and are a great complement to the book. I have added this book to the list of books I plan to buy.

The stupidity that women have had to deal with never fails to astound me. (Bicycle face??!) But thanks to the women that this book highlights and others just like them, we can look back and laugh at how ridiculous the discrimination was!

With vibrant illustrations, A Bike Is Not Just a Bike takes us back to the late 1800s when women like Annie Londonderry were fighting for the simple right to ride a bicycle. They faced so many silly odds and obstacles (like the aforementioned 'bicycle face' or the idea that their innards would jostle around!) but persevered. This book is an awesome resource to teach kids how women had to fight to do just about anything, even the things that are so normal nowadays we may not even reflect on them.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing me with a free eARC in exchange for an honest review.

This engaging books covers the history of women and bicycles. In it we learn how women overcame narratives about women not being suited for bicycle. I learned a lot about the history of the bicycle and the freedom women gained in pushing back and becoming cyclists. The book boasts excellent visuals and a lovely colour palette.

This is such a great tribute to women who have broken barriers and to show how far equality has come. Nowadays, wearing pants, riding a bike, and setting goals to become more independent are things we encourage children of either sex. But during the turn of the century as women became more involved in sports, independent ventures outside of the home, and politics, they were rocking the status quo.

This charming biography highlights several famous cyclists, and uses muted colors and historically-accurate fashions to show how things once were and how things are now.

I highly recommend this for children and adults in schools and libraries.

I am all over a book that supports woman's rights, especially a children's book. We need kids to understand that they can do whatever they set their mind to. This was also a learning session for me, because I did not know who Annie Londonderry was. This was a great educational book to kids of all ages, but especially the girls because we can do whatever we put our mind to.

Thank you to Netgalley, Brenna Jeanneret, and Gloo books for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest feedback.
