Description

Too Jagged to Hold is a luminous and intimate debut that traces the long, spiraling path of recovery after sexual violence. With poetic clarity and fierce tenderness, Kristen Hornung writes from within embodied memory, mapping the shifting terrain of dissociation, grief, attachment, and the slow, alchemical process of healing.

These poems use vivid imagery and lyrical precision to draw the reader into the paradox of life after trauma: where self-protection meets vulnerability, where despair gives way to resilience, where even the sharpest edges can become sites of connection.

Hornung offers no easy resolution; instead, this collection gives presence, honesty, and understanding. It is for anyone who has ever asked themselves, Am I recovered yet?

Advance Praise

"Amazing and relatable. 'Broken Open' shows the feelings of isolation and disassociation that comes with trauma. The urgency to be somewhere else spoke the most for me as I also feel the continual need to numb myself. Hornung will guide you through her own journey of healing to show that resilience and healing are possible, even to those who are isolated from others, socially and from themselves, psychologically."

I read Kristen Hornung’s work from the perspective of a fellow survivor. ‘Too Jagged to Hold’ deserves infinite praise and recognition for the power it conducts through its pages. Though this collection is short, the poignant imagery and emotion Hornung crafts feels infinite. It is not often I feel empowered by the writing of a stranger but, after reading this book, I am reminded of the strength and fortitude in sharing our stories and the power of poetry as a form of processing.

To the author: thank you. I read this book on a whim, not expecting to be so genuinely moved and inspired by your writing, so I feel immensely grateful to have come across your work. Though I do not know you, I am proud of you and look forward to reading more of your poetry in the future.
