Description
Just in time for America’s 250th birthday—because what better way to celebrate than with a genuine, entertaining, soul-searching road trip through the whole dang country? "John W. Butler, an award-winning broadcaster, is an authentic voice with stories from the roads less traveled. It’s John Steinbeck’s "Travels with Charley" meets William Least Heat-Moon’s "Blue Highways," with fewer dogs and more coffee stops."
In Heartland Highways: In Search of America, award-winning broadcaster John W. Butler takes readers on a 33,321-mile odyssey through America’s landscapes, small towns, and big cities—redefining the“Heartland” as every place and person who embodies the nation’s spirit. Released as America approaches its 250th birthday, this book is a love letter to curiosity, detours, and the stories that knit the country together.
"Read this book. It’ll make you laugh, think, and maybe stop yelling at the news for a minute."

"Read this book. It’ll make you laugh, think, and maybe stop yelling at the news for a minute."
"John W. Butler, an award-winning broadcaster, is an authentic voice with stories from the roads less traveled, the diners more deliciously greasy, and the people more real than anything you’ll see on cable news. It’s John Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley meets William Least Heat-Moon’s Blue Highways, with fewer dogs and more coffee stops."
Marketing Plan
Television, radio, podcasts, and print interviews are being scheduled to begin in late September and continue through Christmas. A national tour will be tied to America250 celebrations, leading up to July 4, 2026. The mission is to encourage people to "trade screens for scenes" and go on a road trip. John W. Butler will deliver talks to schools, civic groups, and book clubs, and conduct interviews with all media outlets. He promotes the values of travel, history, culture, and a deeper understanding of the American experience. John focuses on authentic narratives that honor the nation’s past, reflect on its present, and inspire engagement with its future.
