Description

Can hope be found in the depths of war?

July 1942. Newlywed Bobby Atherton has barely had time to experience married life with her airman husband Charlie before war separates them. Bobby must return to her work as an Air Force plotter while Charlie recovers from a devastating injury in Silverdale, leaving them only the odd snatched moment together.

But it isn’t only war forcing them apart. Bobby must face the challenge of marriage to a man mentally and physically scarred by his experiences – very different from the man she fell in love with. With her sister Lilian soon to give birth, Bobby is also haunted by the knowledge that Charlie’s injury means they may never be blessed with a child of their own.

Nevertheless, Bobby finds friendship and cheer with her fellow WAAFs. She gets involved with an entertainment troupe, using her writing skills to lift the camp’s spirits.

And when Charlie resumes operational flying, Bobby’s role as a WAAF plotter becomes a matter of life and death. Can the couple survive the war and heal the rift between them?

An inspirational and emotional historical romance, set in World War Two.

I am loving this series. It has come such a long way from when Bobby arrived in Silverdale as a junior reporter.. War has changed so much for her and all the regular characters and it's clear there is more to come in book 6. Betty Firth is fast becoming one of my favourite saga writers.

In this the fifth in series it details life in the forces and the difficulties that may bring. In the case of newly wed Athertons, Charlie & Bobby they are trying to adapt to being apart so early in their marriage with Charlie being at home in Silverdale after life-changing injuries during a flying mission and Bobby back on camp in her role as a plotter feels guilty for enjoying the camaraderie of her billet chums, will they manage to sort themselves out?
For all the difficulties Bobby has to face she always has time for others, her sister Lillian is facing the birth of her first child and needs her twins support. On camp Bobby has assisted the entertainment group which has helped buoy up her spirits, and her friend Ellis is a good support.
This book makes you really appreciate the difficulties married couples encountered. Recommend.

My favourite character was Bobby for all of the above, Scarlet was a bit of a case too. Least favourite was Connor’s.
Georgia’s storyline was sad.. I recognised Elgin, as I live close by and was aware of the airbase.
Even better, still another book to come. Looking forward to it already.

this series is such wonderful set of books. the stories now feel like coming home to people and a place we have all grown fond of. in war time this means getting a bit emotional. especially when we are seeing people either being in danger at war or coming home and being in danger because of the war. our characters are being shaped, hurt and sometimes damaged by what they have to do everyday and in this book we see the direct fall out of this. how can families, couples, young and old deal with this? its brave and courageous to even try sometimes.
a lot of men came back with huge mental health issues. and many took that to the grave without the help they needed. lots didn't talk of it and it often then gnawed away inside. and some did come home and live a life that was full of joy but a glimmer of pain lingered in the corner of many's eyes. and also the woman, keeping home going, try to keep it going when their men were either fighting or coming home changed.
in this book of Betty our main characters are facing all this and more.
you see this but you also see how the support of others and love is often key. and being there for each other can be the life saver.
there is glimmers of gorgeousness in this book too with the friendships and comrade.
this series makes me so happy with each new one. but then the fear that one day we might have to say goodbye or that something bad will happen to some of my favourite characters!
Betty writes her books with such heart and emotional awareness. like she truly knows us and her characters and knows certainly how to tell the stories she does. the setting, well we all know where this is set and isn't it a joy whenever we get to go visit, even in books.
another story that made me feel all the feels and more.

Betty Firth, what are you doing to us? I’m an emotional wreck! Many tears were shed in the reading of this book! Without giving any spoilers, there were some truly heartbreaking moments in this book but also scenes that made me incredibly happy! This really is a perfect book, beautifully written and expertly plotted. The characters are all so well drawn that they seem like real friends and it’s a joy to return to Silverdale and spend more time with them. There were some slightly darker themes in this book, as we saw the effects of war impact more directly on Bobby and Charlie and I think this added even more emotional richness to the story. I’m now torn between wishing to read the next book but not wanting this series to end! I can’t praise this series highly enough; it’s historical fiction at its best.

I just simply love this series! I was sad to finish the book knowing I have to wait for another to be written! I love the characters and being from the local area I feel at home reading each book!

This particular title addressed so many important issues which I haven't read in other books. Both the physical and mental wounds that came home with men during and after the war were often seen to be something to be ashamed of. Books rarely look at "bedroom matters" which were something that affected both the man and wife. Throughout this series they have been addressed with compassion and understanding and I applaud the author for bringing them into her books. I also think that LMF was something that whilst many men didn't want to be labelled with was something that often saved the lives of others; in this case the crew on the plane should a panic attack have happened mid flight. It makes me think that in this situation today the lives of many others would have been spared with the increased understanding of mental health and stress.

I guessed from the title where the book was heading and cannot wait for the next instalment back in the Dales with I hope many of the old characters featuring!

Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers and of course Betty Firth for writing such amazing books and allowing me to read an Arc copy.

A little miracle in the dales, by Betty firth. I didn’t realise that this was number 5 in a series and at times I found it hard to get in to because of it been a series, but I have purchased the first book and will be reading them all and this again and sure I will enjoy it more.
