Description
FROM THE WINNER OF THE NIGERIA PRIZE FOR LITERATURE
It is Baby’s birthday, but Grace has not seen her first born in twenty-six years. Now a wife, mother to twin daughters and the owner of a successful medical clinic, Grace has carefully constructed a new life. And now, the secret she’s kept for decades is about to resurface – and it could destroy everything.
Grace was only fifteen when she got pregnant and, under pressure from her parents, gave Baby away. Unable to forgive their decision, she cut them off completely. Now, when Grace’s estranged mother walks back into her life unannounced, the fragile existence she spent years building begins to unravel.
Grace is a story about motherhood, finding meaning for yourself and fighting for the people that you love.

Grace was a phenomenal read. I was absolutely gripped and begrudged starting it in the evening and having to put it down to sleep. The story follows Grace through the trials of her successful adult life with chapters sharing the trauma she lived through aged 15. The themes of family live, forgiveness, and redemption are uplifting and timely.
The characters are fantastically crafted and you end up rooting for them and embroiled in their family. This makes the twist even more powerful. The writing is truly excellent, it is well paced and well crafted.
The book deals sensitively with the issues of modern Nigeria. The ethical conundrums of so-called baby farms are woven through the story beautifully.
I will be recommending this book far and wide! Everyone should read it.
Deja R, Reviewer
“Grace was not superstitious, but she believed in things. Like this ritual for one. Wherever Baby was, it connected Grace to her. If she gave it up, if she missed one year, then Baby would become a ghost.“
This is the story of Grace, a woman who built a new life for herself with a loving husband, twin daughters and a successful business, only to be haunted by a secret she’s carried for almost 30 years. It’s about motherhood, forgiveness and trauma recovery.
From the first page, I was pulled into Grace’s world. I felt and understood her loss and emptiness so well, even though she led a life in which everything seemed to be in order, with people who loved her.
The writing is beautiful, powerful.
I’m not sure about the ending.. let’s say that was my least favorite part. The “twist” didn’t feel necessary, almost like the story didn’t trust its own power. But still, I read this with so much emotion that it deserves 5 stars.
Thank you so much for the ARC.
