Description

AJ knew the honeymoon phase wouldn’t last forever, but she didn’t expect that she and her husband would feel more like roommates quite so soon. How could she have gone from being certain he was ‘the one’ to wrestling with the question she couldn’t admit out loud: Is this it?

Between the disillusionment of early motherhood and the claustrophobia of the COVID-19 lockdown, she becomes increasingly dissatisfied with a life that was supposed to bring contentment. Antidepressants and secret fantasies of other men quiet some of her inner turmoil, but after she stumbles into an all-consuming Instagram affair with a man on the other side of the world, she begins to wonder: what if her marriage isn’t the problem? What if it’s monogamy?

Desperate to experience novelty and passion again without destroying her young daughter’s stable family life, AJ proposes a radical solution: an open marriage.

Her reluctant husband eventually agrees, provided they stick to the strict set of rules she created to ensure their new lifestyle doesn’t impact their family life.

AJ soon discovers that, as a married woman on dating apps, it isn’t so easy to find the type of connection she yearns for within such constraints. Before long, lines are crossed and the rules start to bend.

As vulnerabilities are exposed and power imbalances emerge, what seemed like the answer to preserving their marriage gradually pushes AJ and her husband to their limits.

Written under a pseudonym to protect the privacy of those involved, The Undoing of My Marriage blends immersive prose with evocative poetry originally composed in real time to offer a rare perspective on non-monogamy. Intimate, raw and brutally honest, it explores female desire, maternal identity and the messy reality of a marriage unravelling.

For readers of raw autofiction, contemporary domestic drama and emotionally complex relationship narratives.

This was such a raw and devastating look at the undoing of a marriage and what lead up to the end. The author’s honesty is amazing and I was captivated while reading. This is a book many people in our current times will be able to relate to in one way or another. The poetry throughout was also beautiful. This book will really make you reflect and think. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Review will be posted on Instagram and Amazon on pub day and links added to NetGalley.

this is such a raw and emotional read. i felt it in my whole heart. you can relate to alot of what these characters are going through even if only in parts and even if its simply because we are all living in current times. but the grass isn't always greener line is one for a reason. and we might all think or see a different life, a different moments. but for me this book proved that humans are humans as they ever were and sometimes a "new way" is going to challenge a fair few human hearts a bit too much. especially in this book when our main character clearly was behaving out of symptoms of a wider problem within rather than just want to be devoured and have fun with someone other.
i liked how it was judgy or pushy and simply a story of itself.
and it was as honest as it needed to be given the subject matter which i also appreciated. whilst being on the side of not wanting us all to spiral into a depressive state whilst reading!
i want to check out more from this author for sure as the writing was really good and i enjoyed the flow of the writing alot.

This book was very raw. It was sad. It was very emotional and a lot of people can relate to this book in their day-to-day life or their path, life, etc. but it has so many mixed emotions. It grabs you by the road it doesn’t let you go into the very last page I was excited for this book because sometimes we all go through things and we’re afraid and she took a lot of chances and it was very roar. Thank you for this read.

Very well written. I was hooked to the story already from the first pages. It's the reality of a married life that drew me in. I really like the writing and I enjoyed easy and captivating chapters. Poems are nice addition and relevant to the story. Thank you for this book and something to think about. I will be re-reading for sure.

Interesting book.
Thanks to author, publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book. While I got the book for free it had no bearing on the rating I gave it.
