Evie Woods’s The Violin Maker's Secret is a beautifully crafted novel that enchants from the very first page. Expertly written and steeped in atmosphere, this magical story is utterly captivating, drawing the reader into a world where music and mystery intertwine.

What sets this book apart is its unique narrative voice: the violin itself. Woods’s decision to have the story unfold through the eyes (and strings) of the violin is inspired, offering a fresh perspective as the instrument witnesses centuries of history. The journey of the violin through the ages, as it passes through the hands of various owners, is both compelling and emotionally resonant.

The cast of characters is wonderfully realised. Each owner is brought vividly to life, their hopes and struggles rendered with remarkable realism and depth. I found myself invested in their stories, the characterisation making every individual feel genuine and believable.

The novel is suffused with a sense of magic making the reading experience transportive. The evocative descriptions create a tangible sense of place and time, immersing the reader in the violin’s journey. There’s a haunting beauty to the narrative, with music acting as both a motif and a bridge between past and present.

This is a compelling, enjoyable read that lingers in the mind long after the final page. With its unique premise, imaginative storytelling, and memorable characters, this is a must read,

A mesmerising, atmospheric journey through time.

Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the ARC

The Violin Maker’s Secret is a beautifully atmospheric and emotionally rich story, filled with mystery, music, and a strong sense of place. The Irish influence adds warmth and soul, while the vivid settings of London, Milan, and Cremona make the story feel immersive and deeply nostalgic.

The characters are quietly compelling, their grief and longing handled with care and emotional honesty. Music plays a central role, elevating the narrative and giving it an intimate, almost personal resonance.

This is a reflective, heartfelt read that lingers long after the final page, perfect for readers who enjoy emotional depth, subtle mystery, and stories where place and memory matter.
