Description

Alyssa Reed has always been a problem solver and a fan of the long con. So, when the justice system fails her best friend, Alyssa takes it upon herself to set things right. And as far as Alyssa is concerned, setting things right means killing the hockey players who assaulted her friend.

There’s just a minor problem, and it’s not means or motive. It’s opportunity and access. But when Alyssa snags a date with the team’s head coach, Mark Eriksson—after stalking him for weeks, shh!—access to the team may no longer be a barrier to entry. At least, not if she can convince Mark she’s serious about him.

When hockey players start dropping like flies and Mark becomes increasingly suspicious, Alyssa has to decide if it’s just great sex that makes her want to trust Mark or if her feelings for him have outlived the long con and evolved into something more than a means to an end.

Alyssa Reed has always been a problem solver and a fan of the long con. So, when the justice system fails her best friend, Alyssa takes it upon herself to set things right. And as far as Alyssa is...

This was definitely a dark book...as described... but I really enjoyed it a lot!! It was fast paced & steamy and I could NOT put it down!!

There was amazing vocabulary in the book - I mean, come on, when was the last time you saw the word "defenestrated" used (& correctly at that!!) in a novel??!! Love it!! (There were more, that's just an example.)

I was on the edge of my seat several times throughout the book - not "scary" or necessarily suspenseful... but I couldn't wait to see how it turned out & if Alyssa would safely get away & stay under the radar.

Loved Mark (LOL - "You fell for a mark named Mark!" - one of the best lines!)... but the character Mark was amazing... I love that he actually knew what she was doing for weeks before he even confronted her... although I found it a bit odd with the timing of it, that he knew what she was doing & all of a sudden it became such a big issue (yes, I'm aware it was partly because the police had come to question him & asked about her, it just felt a bit rushed/disjointed there).

I also appreciated the author's note at the end of the book! She represented rape awareness well! (Trigger warning - rape, attempted rape, murder, PTSD, abuse, death of parents, mothers that left when they were young & more.)

All in all - if you like dark & spicy... this book is for you!!!

Thanks to the author (Sam Evans), publisher (Super Gravity Press LLC) & Netgalley for the ARC read. All opinions are my own.

“How many hockey-douchebags can you kill before they realize they’re an endangered species?”

Did I read this in one sitting? Yes, yes I did, with the audacity of a man unsupervised.

I love dark romance, that’s my primary lane. Throw in hockey, and I’m levitating. Add a revenge plot, now I’m orbiting outer space.

Alyssa's cousin and best friend, Katie, is failed by the justice system after being gang-raped by five hockey bros. Alyssa, ever the problem solver, stalks Mark, their head coach, as part of a long con to get close to him and, in turn, gain access to Katie's rapists in order to take those pieces of shit out John Wick style.

I've said it before, shit talking is my love language, so I was howling with Alyssa and Mark. It was fast-paced and witty. Vengeance was delivered, and Alyssa slayed while she did it. She was such a strong FMC - she's a breath of fresh air compared to all the oh-so-weak and oh-so-delicate FMCs we are given most of the time. Alyssa put on her "bad ass" pants and showed up to become their problem.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC. Opinions are my own.

Thank you to NetGalley, Super Gravity Press LLC, and the author for a copy of this book.

This is the kind of dark hockey romance I am here for!! We’ve got spice (so much spice). We’ve got murder (who doesn’t love a good revenge plot). We’ve got falling for your stalker (with some fake dating, but only one of them knows it’s fake!?).

I absolutely adored this book. I love what Alyssa decides to do to get revenge for what 5 hockey players did to her cousin (Female rage! Vigilante justice!!!). I just can’t scream about this book enough. 200 out of 10, no notes. (Bonus points for the use of defenestration. I love obscure words!!)

If a dark, super spicy romance is what you are looking for, look no further.

After five hockey players are found "not guilty" of grape leaving our FMC's best friend in constant fear, our FMC sets out on quest for vengeance.

This is my first experience with a hockey romance because I prefer my romance a shade darker than the traditional romance. Sam Evans delivered me my shade darker hockey romance and I devoured it.

If you enjoy witty, playful, sarcastic banter with graphic, descriptive spice as well as a fierce, independent FMC... pick this up.

Thank you to Sam Evans, the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC of this read. All thoughts and feelings are my own.

"Kill the Puckers" is not your standard sports romance book. It contains a powerful message for anyone who never received the justice they deserved. We follow along the main character, Alyssa, as she systematically removes the men that assaulted her cousin from this world. Alyssa ends up righting ths wrongs of a broken system, unexpectedly falls in love with her Mark and brings her own justice to the ones who deserve it.

An absolute fantastic read that I would recommend to anyone who loves bad ass women, great storytelling, and anyone who wants to see the bad guys get what they deserve.

It gives me Black Sheep by Alexa Harlowe and Brynne Weaver Vibes.
I really like Alyssa trying to protect who she sees as her sister in a morally grey way, when the way we are often told is correct and just, fails them. I think most ask what if and don’t act. So, I enjoyed a story where they did.
I felt a little sorry for Mark at first. Then I didn’t. I liked that hints were dropped as the story progressed but didn’t outright say anything about Mark’s thoughts.
And the situation at the end earns Mark a Star ⭐️.
I’d read other books by Sam, I’d read more if there were others in the series.
Ps. I really like and appreciate the afterword.

Kill the Puckers by Sam Evans

An unhinged, cathartic dark hockey romance where vengeance is the point and romance is the complication. What makes this book special is the female rage done right. Alyssa isn’t morally conflicted about her mission and the story never asks you to be either. The justice system failed, so she steps in with a long con, a body count, and zero remorse. The balance between revenge and romance is sharp, tense, and wildly satisfying.

Tropes & Vibes:
🏒 Dark hockey romance
🔪 Vigilante FMC
🔥 Long con fake relationship
😈 Morally gray MMC
💬 Shit talking as a love language

Read this if you like:
Female revenge fantasies, dark romance that doesn’t flinch, MMCs who aren’t the center of the universe, romance that grows unexpectedly out of chaos, and stories where bad men actually pay.

I was hooked from the moment I started this book! You're thrown straight in with Alyssa (FMC) looking after her cousin who's fighting a rape trial against some hockey players. They're deemed not guilty, and Alyssa takes matters into her own hands.

This was a fast paced, spicy and intense read, that I loved every minute of. You're routing for Alyssa the whole time, and the MMC Mark is incredibly hot.

My review is live on Goodreads now and will go live on TikTok shortly.

“Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book but it was so fun! I wasn’t sure if this would be like the Heated Rivalry or Pucked Up series, but this book really is such a fun mix of genres. We have a hockey romance, with a justifiably vengeful FMC absolutely taking retribution into her own hands. There were details that I, as a true crime and chemistry nerd, definitely appreciated, especially the name of the hockey arena , which were such fun touches. The FMC and MMC have amazing chemistry! This was a definitely not a slow burn, and I love that the romance starts nearly right away! The hockey aspect wasn’t’ distracting to the main storyline, but makes sense to the overall story. Honestly, it’s a great fun read, but it’s also a fantastic commentary on what is happening in the NHL right now and the ongoing support of rapists because they play hockey well. I appreciate authors who take stands on social and political concerns, so not only was this a super entertaining read, but it was also very socially relevant. Definitely check it out ASAP!

I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. “

Hot hockey spice ✅

Adult mature relationships ✅
Humour ✅

For readers that enjoyed butcher and blackbird or lights out - this is right up your alley

Make sure that you read the trigger warning because this is all about R victims and if that isn’t for you then don’t read it. This was my first novel by Sam Evans but it won’t be my last!

"you fell for a mark named Mark"

Kill the Puckers is a dark hockey romance with comedy, murder and a lot of sex (It literally says so in the trigger warnings)
It follows the story of Alyssa Reed psychiatrist who is hell bent on getting revenge for her cousin and the only way to do that is to fake date the head coach of the hockey thats players ruined her cousins life. Only thing she did not anticipate is: falling in love.

My thoughts:
OMG!!! when I say I loved this book, i loved it so much I devoured it in under 24 hours. the sarcasm between the MFC and MMC was brilliant, the flirting was amazing and don't get me started on the sex because: DAMN!!! It had me blushing.
Sam Evens has written an extraordinary dark romance that is something you need to experience for yourselves.

Thanks Publishers for this one!
Kill the Puckers by Sam Evans completely surprised me in the best way possible. The storyline was engaging from the start, and the writing style made it incredibly easy to dive right in. The chemistry between the FMC and MMC? Absolutely top tier. I miss Alyssa and Mark already.

I especially appreciated the unapologetically strong female lead; it’s always refreshing to see a character who owns her power without hesitation. Overall, this was a compelling dark hockey romance that delivered on tension, character dynamics, and atmosphere. I’ll definitely be keeping Sam Evans on my repeat-author list. Honestly, who can resist a well-done dark hockey romance? I need more!

Thanks to Sam Evans for writing this gem

Kill the Puckers by Sam Evans ARC Review

“You fell for a mark named Mark”

5/5 stars

Kill the Puckers was a fantastic read overall. I thoroughly enjoyed every second and found it difficult to put down. I went into this book expecting a fun, lighthearted, spicy read and while it definitely delivers it also was so emotionally engaging and powerful.

The story follows Alyssa, who takes it upon herself to get revenge on a group of hockey players that assaulted her cousin when the justice system failed to deliver.

What really sets this story apart is Alyssa’s need to right a wrong. Her determination fuels the emotional core of this book and despite unaliving people she is someone you root for from the very first chapter. She’s strong, vulnerable, compassionate and determined. Watching her refuse to back down even when it would have been easier to stay quiet, gave the story real substance.

The chemistry and romance between Alyssa and Mark is intense and passionate, it never felt as if it overshadowed or took away from the main plot. Mark is a fantastic character, he’s layered, supportive and actually invested in Alyssa and what she’s fighting for. He never tries to overpower her fight or get her to stop, instead he stands beside her. The spice between the two is absolutely delicious and so well written, no notes at all.

Thank you to NetGalley and the Author for allowing me to read this as an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

I devoured this book. It was a freer dark romance hockey read. Plus it had a revenge angle which I also loved. It hits on a very real problem in the world loosely based on a real life event. It brings to life a real problem that happens in the sports world. Plus the spice was great and the FMC was such a kick ass strong girl which I always love. 10 out of 10 for me!

Kill the Puckers by Sam Evans absolutely delivers. If you loved the Mindfck* series, this one is going to hit all the right notes. The revenge plot was top tier....calculated, satisfying, and executed with precision. Every step of the journey toward justice felt intentional and incredibly well written. The FMC is fierce, layered, and impossible not to root for. I especially loved the dynamic between her and the MMC. His patience, loyalty, and unwavering support balanced her intensity in the best way. Their relationship added emotional depth without taking away from the grit and tension of the story. Dark, gripping, and deeply satisfying. An easy five stars for me. Highly recommend for readers who love revenge-driven romance with heart.

Revenge is a dish best served with tranquilizer darts? She will do anything to protect her cousin when the wrong people didn’t get the right charges serves. Justice failed them. So taking control back she has to make a honeypot play. And oh man is this good! The authors notes completely shocked me. But I loved the final acceptance in this. It was a great story!

I LOVED Kill the Puckers. The mix of revenge, romance, and spice was exactly what I wanted and I was locked in the entire time.

Alyssa is such a badass and I was fully rooting for her from the start. The tension with Mark was so good, and the chemistry made everything even better. The spice hit, but the storyline was still the main focus, which I loved.

This book was so much better than I ever could have imagined. It was everything I didn't know I needed.

We have a female revenge unaliver. She is absolute perfection. I love her from start to finish. Her love for her family was everything. Her sassy, witty humor and her internal monologue had me cackling.

We have a hot hockey coach, who there's so much more to him than you think. He also loves Alyssa's sassy-ness which leads to some HOTTTTT spicy times.

This is an absolutely binge-able read, perfect for fans of Butcher and Blackbird or Mindfck!

Dark rom-com might be one of my absolut favorite genres! The combination of romance (and spice), banter, dark themes, morally grey characters and action packed storyline just works for me!
And this was no exception!
The saracastic humor, the woman on a mission and the feel for justice in a dark romance setting was just top nudge - and I guess it falls under "hockey romance" too.
Definitely dark in more than one way - but the light banter and friendships kept it cozy.
Oh and the spice was spiceing all over ;)

I went into Kill the Puckers not knowing what to expect and ended up completely hooked. I read it in 48 hours and struggled to put it down.
The story follows Alyssa, a determined and fiercely loyal FMC who takes matters into her own hands after someone close to her is failed by the justice system. She’s intelligent, focused, and emotionally layered, which made her incredibly easy to root for.
Mark, the team’s hockey coach, initially comes across as confident and guarded, but he quickly reveals a steadier, more thoughtful side. His dynamic with Alyssa is one of the highlights of the book — their banter flows naturally, the emotional tension builds well, and the physical chemistry absolutely delivers. The spice was spicing and the dirty talk? Chef’s kiss.
The revenge-driven plot keeps the pacing tight and makes this highly bingeable from start to finish.
Trigger warnings: sexual assault themes, violence, kidnapping, and stalking. Readers should check the full content notes if needed.
Overall, this was a gripping, character-focused dark romance that delivered exactly what I wanted. Easy five stars.

We all fell for a mark named Mark with this one 😆
This book was a hilarious dark romance. I did not know that I needed a book with this level of femme fatale in my life. It seriously hit on all the marks I was looking for from the genre. It is not super dark as far as dark romance goes, so I would say it would be good for someone who wants to bridge from thriller to the dark romance genre.

The found family and banter are everything in this book - we all know how much love me both of those things in books. Definitely read the trigger warnings as this one is loaded up with a couple things that might make the normal person pause. I truly enjoyed the vigilante justice elements especially with what is going on right now - it is very cathartic to see a woman slaying troglodytes!

ooooh this had me wanting to know more from the very glimpse to the title, blurb and then opening of the book.
Alyssa has a friend who has been failed by the very system meant to protect her. so what does this capable woman do, well yes, she decides to solve it herself. this is about right and wrong in her mind and setting things straight.
oh yeh, the small part is that this might mean killing the people that assaulted her friend.....ermmmmm....
dark romance here we come. rage here we come. grey areas and nuance because of the subject matter oh yes indeed. so just sit back and let Sam take you there.
i was so hard into this book. because i felt with my whole chest that need to make bad men pay for what they aren't currently paying for! less than 1%!!! and that is simply what recorded. its anger inducing. and worse than that it makes people live in fear every single day. coming into this book i new i was extra hooked because of this. i was emotionally needing to know where this book would take me. you could feel and stand by woman just like Alyssa and her friend. you felt that raw rage but also the pain too. the feeling of not knowing what to do because the system, the world wouldn't allow it, help it, or make justice happen. so what next when you are just feeling so helpless? i felt all that within these pages.
of course that is until we have what books are brilliant for... the oh dear. because that comes in the form of the MMC Mark. he suddenly became Alyssa sticking point. their chemistry and seeing how this caught Alyssa and made her unfold a bit of her thinking and straight on trajectory was really well written.
i also then got really nervous. because how could this possibly end? and how would i end up feeling about what that would be?
this book didn't sensationalise the main themes in the book. and instead helped so much more thought and real emotion come into it that you might not be able to see otherwise.
it was thoughtful, real and powerful. if you have ever had someone hurt someone you love in this way, dont even begin to think you can try put the raw rage, upset and pain to words. this book boiled it into the pages the best it could do and in that sense you feel so much for what Alyssa is doing.
the romance never took over, but it did have it need and also its place.
i loved this read. and i zoomed through it needing to know more, be there right with Alyssa more and get to see how this might end.

I was not expecting loving and having so much fun reading this! I loved Alyssa and Mark's story, their banter, chemistry, spice scenes, evolution as couple, the way she let her feelings for him grow, accept and talk about it! Alyssa's so smart, I was so invested in her revenge, all the new ways she come up.. all the side characters were very interesting, loved Sam's writing, the pace of the story was perfect and I think I read faster than I thought I would! Also and as hockey fan I quick got the reference while reading and as the author said it's important it's not forgotten.

I loved this book. A bit of a slow start for important scene setting, but then the story explodes all the way to a satisfying conclusion. Nothing is hastily tied up, no storylines are rushed or dropped, spicy but the main themes are thriller/suspense with the secondary focus the spice.

Interesting premise, FMC Alyssa is technically, legally in the wrong but her reasoning is understandable and even defendable. 1 out of 3 women are Alyssa’s cousin Katie. Doing the right thing doesn’t always line up with what is legal. The fact that the team mascot is Black Bears adds a fun twist at different points in the story and doubles down that all women would choose the bear.

I also really enjoy how intelligent the main and even the side characters are. Everyone has their own motivations, history, and goals that are expressed in believable ways. I do wish there was a pov for the MMC Mark, but it does make sense for the story and kept things mysterious.

Brynne Weaver is an author I’d say has a similar writing style. As a Pacific Northwest native, this one has an extra special place in my heart. Thanks for giving them what they deserved. Thanks to NetGalley I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Additionally, I plan on ordering a physical copy for my shelf as I loved this book. ARC Review — Spoiler Free

Kill the Puckers by Sam Evans is a dark, revenge-driven story set against a hockey backdrop — and it leans far more into plot than traditional romance.

From the opening chapters, this book establishes a high-stakes premise and maintains strong forward momentum throughout. The pacing is what hooked me; I kept reading because I genuinely needed to see how everything would unfold. The tension builds steadily, and the morally gray direction is fully committed.

While the romance is present — and there are spicy moments early on — it takes a secondary role to the larger storyline. For a book labeled “dark hockey romance,” the romantic development felt lighter than expected. The connection between the FMC and the head coach functions more as a ride-or-die partnership formed under pressure rather than a deeply explored emotional arc.

That said, I appreciated that the story didn’t sacrifice its plot intensity in favor of romance beats. This reads more like a revenge thriller with romantic elements than a romance-forward sports novel.

If you enjoy morally complex characters, escalating stakes, and dark anti-hero energy, this will keep you turning pages. Just go in knowing the plot is the true driver here. With that being said, I still really enjoy this book. It was a quick read, and it kept me engaged which is sometimes hard to do.

Thank you to the author for the ARC.

ARC Review • KILL THE PUCKERS by Sam Evans

My second ARC of the year and WOW… this one is a full blown 10/10 obsession.

This book is sexy, thrilling, funny, razor sharp, nerve wracking, and completely impossible to put down.

My only regret?
Reading it too fast.

Alyssa Reed is a master strategist and lifelong problem solver. When the justice system fails her best friend and cousin, she takes matters into her own hands. Justice, in her mind, means eliminating the hockey players responsible for the assault permanently.

The problem isn’t motive or method. It’s access.

That problem disappears when she lands a date with Mark Eriksson, the team’s head coach, after some very deliberate maneuvering. Suddenly, the long con is in motion.

Mark and Alyssa’s chemistry is INSANE.
It practically bleeds off the page.

You know when a romance just hits, when the tension, the dialogue, the intimacy, the connection all feel electric and real? That’s this book.

Being inside Alyssa’s head, her rage, humor, and determination, makes this story feel visceral and addictive.

If you love dark romance with witty banter, laugh out loud moments, and a heroine fueled by righteous fury, this will own you.

Think

A dark, murderous, hockey romance?!? What else could I want?!

I found this to be a fun take on the hockey romance genre, especially with elements of murder and revenge. Yes, you will have to suspend reality a bit, but I think it's worth it.

I found it well balanced: it has spice but is not overly spicy, and it is graphic but not gut-wrenchingly so. The FMC finds her stride, and revenge has never felt so good, especially when it comes with a side of a handsome hockey coach.

I love a book with a content warning! I like to know what look forward to and what to prepare myself for. And I appreciate the author letting the reader know what their getting into right outta the gate.

Featured book: Kill the Puckers by Sam Evans ☠️

Kill the Puckers did not disappoint! It's a darker hockey romance about a woman who takes vengeance into her own hands after the court systems find her bff's rapists "not guilty". The scum happen to be a bunch of professional hockey players and so Alyssa figures dating the hockey coach is a good way in...only then she maybe catches feelings and he might be starting to get suspicious about why his team keeps dropping dead.

I was riveted by this story and read it in 48 hours because I needed to know what happened! Sure, you need to suspend a little belief here and there, but it was so fun and even heartwarming, while being absolutely sarcastic and dark.
I really appreciated the afterward sharing what real life events inspired this story and I look forward to reading more from this author!

I wasn't sure what to expect going into this one, but I absolutely loved it! I read all the trigger warnings, and I felt comfortable moving forward. It turned out to be an amazing story of revenge where it was most deserved. The romance was a happy little bonus. I love the chemistry between our main characters, I loved the relationship with her "surrogate" father, and I loved the entire plot. Avoiding spoilers here, but to say I looked forward to each murder probably makes me sound crazy, but you'll get it when you read it. It was a wild ride, and I loved every second of it.

"Kill the Puckers" is a really great read. Starting with the content warning in the very start of the book, the author had me chuckling: "You're reading DARK hockey romance. It says so on the cover. So don't complain that you didn't know what you were in for." And hoo boy, she wasn't kidding! (Also, sidenote, the chapter titles were fantastic!)

The book is as advertised; a dark hockey romance, filled with revenge and murder! Our FMC, Alyssa, is incited to take justice into her own hands after her cousin is drugged and assaulted by a group of professional hockey players, then let off as not guilty by the courts. Her plan--kill the puckers, obviously!

"And if the judge and jury had gotten it right, then I wouldn't have to play executioner..."

Alyssa was a bit hard for me to totally buy into and fully like because she was very lone wolf and thought she knew everything, even when she was coached and told other things from her con-man lifelong criminal mentor. This fit her character though, and was explained from past trauma, but still had me shaking my head when she sometimes fast-tracked her plans and was winging it and hoping for the best... Maybe that's my anxiety talking... Was it the most realistic always? Nah. Was I constantly thinking about how there are cameras recording everywhere and she would most likely not get away with any of it? Yes. BUT THAT WASN'T THE POINT and didn't detract from the story.

The writing was excellent, witty, and had fantastic banter and chemistry between our FMC and MMC, Mark the mark, who's such a good book boyfriend. The ending was satisfying and not over too quickly or rushed.

Overall it was a solid read, easily earning five stars, and I'd definitely read more by this author!

I was drawn to the title and premise but stayed for the dark romance. I'm not someone who would consider myself a hockey fan but Sam Evans crafted a spicy revenge story. Alyssa initially starts dating Mark the head coach of a professional hockey team because she wants revenge on the five team members who raped her cousin. This is a gory revenge story where Alyssa is not afraid to get her hands dirty and I love the righteous feminine rage. What surprised me was how invested I got in Alyssa and Mark's relationship. It may have started out as a means to an end on Alyssa's part but the the chemistry was off the charts and the spicy scenes were scorching. Highly recommend this to dark romance readers.

The chemistry between Alisa and Mark were scorching🔥 she never backed down
Mark is a fantastic character who would supportive never find a soccer and always by her side.
And the spice ❤️‍🔥🥵🔥
They fit perfectly together. I like that it wasn’t overly focused on the romance. That she was focused on her goal….for the most part 😈
I love this so freaking much I think dark rum comes are my new favorite genre. It DEVOURED this.
