Description

A lighthearted and swoony contemporary YA novel with a 2000s throwback about a cheerleader who’s determined to make a comeback … and the ex-boyfriend who might get in her way. From USA Today bestselling author Janette Rallison comes All’s Fair in Love, War, and High School, a hilarious and wholesome rom-com perfect for fans of teen rivals-to-lovers stories.

Most people assume Samantha lives a pretty charmed life: cheerleading captain, decent grades, perfect boyfriend. But when she tanks the SATs (who needs college?) and gets dumped right before prom (who needs romance?), she decides to run for student body president … and realizes that she might not be as popular as she’d thought (who needs dignity?).

On top of everything else, her annoyingly hot ex-boyfriend Logan bets her that she can’t go two weeks without insulting anyone. But Samantha’s determined to win the election and the bet—even with Logan sticking to her like glue, trying to sabotage her. You know what they say: All’s fair in love, war, and high school.

Perfect for fans of Kasie West and Alexandra Moody, this sweet and wholesome rom-com is a story you can bet on.

All's Fair in Love, War and High School is a sweet enemies-to-lovers story about a cheerleader who just bombed her first SAT attempt. In hopes of showing her intended college that she is well rounded, she decides to run for student body president. The remainder of the book is a journey of self discovery for the main character. She makes mistakes, but she learns from them. This book is squeaky clean and appropriate for all ages.

I received a free advance reader copy. All opinions are my own.

💖 Going into this book, I wasn't sure how I'd feel about Samantha. She definitely isn't your typical lovable YA heroine. She's judgmental, overly competitive, insecure beneath all her confidence, and has a habit of saying exactly the wrong thing. At first, I thought I was getting another predictable "mean girl learns to be nice" story, but Janette Rallisonhandled her character growth much better than I expected.

📚 Samantha believes she has everything under control until reality hits in the form of disappointing SAT scores. Realizing she needs something impressive for her college applications, she decides to run for student body president. Then Logan challenges her to go two weeks without insulting anyone, and what sounds simple quickly turns into the biggest challenge she's ever faced.

😂 The bet ended up being one of my favorite parts of the book. Watching Samantha desperately try to stop herself from making sarcastic comments was genuinely hilarious. Even better was seeing the people around her react to this completely unexpected version of her. Her usual circle of friends didn't quite know what to do when she stopped feeding into their behavior, and those moments made for some of the funniest scenes in the story.

✨ What I appreciated most was Samantha's character development. She doesn't transform overnight, and she certainly doesn't become perfect. Instead, she slowly begins to understand how her words affect the people around her and starts building healthier relationships because of it. Her journey felt believable, and by the end I found myself rooting for someone I honestly wasn't sure I'd ever like.

💛 I also enjoyed that the story wasn't afraid to let Samantha be flawed. She's not portrayed as the smartest student, the perfect daughter, or someone who always makes the right choices. Those imperfections made her feel much more authentic than many YA protagonists.

💕 The romance takes more of a backseat compared to Samantha's personal growth. While I liked the relationship overall, I did wish there had been a little more insight into the hero's feelings throughout the story. Some of the romantic developments near the end happened a bit quickly, and I would have loved seeing them unfold more gradually.

👀 It was also fun seeing Josh again after Blue Eyes and Other Teenage Hazards, although I couldn't help cringing whenever Samantha fixated on him because I was firmly on Josh and Cassidy's side. 😅 Samantha's ongoing one-sided rivalry with Cassidy also added plenty of entertaining moments.

🌸 Overall, this is a funny, sweet, and surprisingly heartfelt coming-of-age story about learning empathy, growing beyond your insecurities, and realizing that kindness isn't a weakness. It's full of witty humor, awkward situations, and meaningful character growth, making it another enjoyable YA read from Janette Rallison.
