Meet Violeta! Violeta is a thirteen-year-old skateboarder and podcaster. But most importantly? She’s a PUNK! Oh, and a superhero, too. Superhero + punk = SUPERPUNK. That’s Violeta!
After discovering her grandfather’s old cassette player, Violeta decides to play a cassette tape backward. (Why? It’s pure punk rebellion, duh!) What she didn’t know was this rebellious act would grant her magical powers! Aaaaand . . . unleash monsters. A LOT of them. Violeta will need to use all her new superpowers to protect her home of Hollow Hills from the strange creatures and send them back to wherever they came from. Luckily, she’s joined by Alan, Violeta’s faithful sidekick and fellow podcaster. Together, they’ll have to find a way to put these monsters back in their place. But between homework, podcasting, and skateboarding, Violeta has a tough time managing it all. When a horde of monsters descend on her school, will this superpunk be able to save the day?

Thank you to NetGalley and Oni Press for providing access to an early review copy of this title in exchange for my honest feedback.
After unintentionally releasing a horde of monsters by playing a vintage cassette tape backward, thirteen-year-old Violeta must navigate her dual life as a skateboarder and podcaster while embracing her new role as a superhero. Alongside her sidekick Alan, she utilizes her Superpunk abilities to protect Hollow Hills and her school from the supernatural chaos she inadvertently unleashes.
This graphic novel was a enjoyable read. I particularly appreciated the detailed illustrations, especially the two-page spreads. The author also includes Violeta's playlist, giving insight into the punk rock songs she listens to as she confronts the monsters. I am hopeful for a sequel.
I believe this book will be well-received by students, and I plan to add it to my library collection.

A great book to suggest to the kid who enjoys retro. It is also a great entry book for the kids who may think reading isn't "cool". I quite enjoyed it and will be buying it for my library!

This was a cute middle grade read reminiscent of Ghostbusters. The artwork was eye-catching and the inclusion of punk songs throughout was a nice touch. Superpunk is about a ragtag group of misfits; the punk girl, the nerdy podcaster, and the new girl. The end did have me wondering what was next for this crew.

A cute story about friendship, monsters, and punk. Violeta sees monsters and becomes a superhero when she plays her grandfather's Walkman. Who will believe her and help her? Is she able to save her school from the monsters that few can see? A fun superhero novel with an unexpected lead character.
I received an advanced copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
For a thirteen-year-old skateboarder, Violeta, being punk is everything to her. While listening to her grandfather’s old cassette player of punk music, she starts to play it backwards, which leads her to turn into a superhero. But with every superhero comes a supervillain, in the scary form of shadowy monsters. Can Violeta, as a SuperPunk hero, save her town from all-consuming evil?
It’s time to play some punk music and come up with sweet moves on your skateboard, and that’s exactly what the main character (Violeta) does in this action-packed graphic novel. From wearing plaids and having punk colored hair, this superhero or superpunk just wants to save her town from the strange creatures that want everything in order and in obedience. Lime greens and retro reds splash together across the multicolored pages of one young teen who wants to make a difference while saving her friends and still having time to skateboard, too.

This was a super fun middle grade graphic novel! Loved the meta reading in the beginning where they are making a comic IN the comic!!! Also loved how silly goofy this was without this part taking over the «let’s kick ass and take down monsters» vibe. Will definitely keep an eye out for vol 2!
