Description

A monster hunter and her monstrous enemy . . .

From the Sunday Times bestselling author of Iron & Embers, Helen Scheuerer, The Shadow Prince is an epic fantasy romance with an enemies-to-lovers plot, scorching spice and a richly woven world of magic.

Drue Emmerson wants one thing: vengeance. After her family is slain by vicious shadow wraiths, she’s determined to defend her fallen kingdom. And that means carving out the hearts of every dark creature she can find.

Talemir Starling, celebrated warrior of the realms, has a dangerous secret: he’s a half-wraith, kin to the creatures wreaking devastation on the world. He’ll do anything to keep his true nature under control, especially around the woman who’s vowed to destroy him.

When someone close to Drue disappears, all signs point to Talemir’s kind. But he is determined to prove he’s no monster, and to seek answers of his own. Begrudgingly, the pair must join forces to uncover the deadly truth.

In a world of chaos and carnage, their attraction to one another is the one thing that might just spell the end of them both . . .

Originally published as Slaying the Shadow Prince, this is a companion novel to the Legends of Thezmarr and the Ashes of Thezmarr series.

This was a fantastic read from an established author. The story centers on a strong, feisty heroine—clever, determined, and unafraid to embrace her vengeful side. Alongside her is a mysterious warrior who arrives with a purpose of his own, adding depth and intrigue to the narrative.
The world-building is rich, with Reapers and dark forces woven into the storyline, creating a constant sense of tension. The romance develops at a satisfying slow-burn pace, complementing rather than overshadowing the main plot.
What truly stood out was how effortlessly the story flowed. It’s an easy, engaging read, with a cast of well-developed supporting characters who each bring their own stories and perspectives, enhancing the journey of the main protagonists.
I was completely drawn in and ended up reading it in one sitting, eager to see how the cleverly unfolding plot would resolve.
I would definitely recommend this book. It does include some spice and occasional strong language, but both feel natural and appropriate within the context of the story.

The Shadow Prince is everything I crave in fantasy romance—darkly addictive, gorgeously written, and brimming with enemies-to-lovers tension that burns hotter with every page. Drue Emmerson’s quest for vengeance against the wraiths who destroyed her family meets an irresistible complication: Talemir Starling, a half-wraith sworn to keep his monstrous secret buried. Their alliance is uneasy, dangerous—and utterly magnetic.
Helen Scheuerer’s worldbuilding is stunning, rich with chaos, carnage, and magic so vivid it pulses through the story. The dual POV draws you into both hearts at war, layering emotion and longing beneath every clash of blades and barbed word. I loved how the slow unraveling of trust mirrors the melting animosity between them, making every stolen glance and near kiss feel electric.
This tale of vengeance, forbidden love, and identity kept me breathless to the end. The Shadow Prince proves Scheuerer is a master of romantic tension and high-stakes fantasy—an unforgettable 5-star read that left me desperate for the next chapter in this world.

Helen Scheuerer never disappoints! A monster-hunter turned monster, a lady ranger bent on vengeance, and a war that threatens to engulf the entire realm in evil? Say less!

The Shadow Prince is a standalone romantasy set in the world of the Legends of Thezmarr. The book follows Talemir Starling, celebrated war sword conspicuously absent from the Legends of Thezmarr books, and Drue Emmerson, noble-woman turned ranger whose family were slain by the shadow wraiths who've conquered her kingdom. Now, Drue seeks not only vengeance, but the survival of her people. To save them all, she is forced to work with a war sword with a dangerous secret: Talemir Starling is a half-wraith. But is he a monster or a hero? Will he save them, or doom them all?

As always, Helen Scheuerer delivers the perfect balance of the rich world-building, fast pace, and plot twists even the most seasoned reader won't see coming, alongside delicious slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance. In short, The Shadow Prince has everything a romantasy lover could ask for!

I only wish I’d read The Shadow Prince after Vows & Ruin when I read Legends of Thezmarr. For maximum emotional damage, I HIGHLY recommend reading the first two Legends books, then The Shadow Prince, then finish the Legends series!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ | ARC Review
The Shadow Prince by Helen Scheuerer
📅 Release Date: 7 May 2026
This book completely consumed me 😍🔥
The Shadow Prince delivers everything you want from a dark fantasy romance—vengeance, monsters, forbidden attraction, and a world that feels rich, dangerous, and impossible to escape.
Drue is such a powerful heroine—driven by grief and vengeance, she’s fierce, relentless, and unapologetically brutal when it comes to hunting the very creatures that destroyed her life. Watching her collide with Talemir? Addictive.
And Talemir… 🖤
A half-wraith warrior hiding what he is, battling both his nature and his growing feelings for the one woman sworn to destroy him? The tension is unreal. This is enemies-to-lovers done RIGHT—full of slow-burn intensity, distrust, and that constant edge of danger.
The chemistry? 🔥
The stakes? Even higher.
Every moment between them feels like it could either save them… or ruin them completely.
✨ The world-building is immersive, the pacing keeps you hooked, and the emotional pull hits HARD.
🖤 Overall: Dark, addictive, and beautifully intense. If you love monster romance, forbidden love, and morally grey characters—you NEED this.

I absolutely loved this installment in the Legends of Thezmarr series! Helen Scheurer knows to weave emotions in the best way possible and I had such a blast reading about this adventure again. Talemir is one of my favourite characters in the whole series and his romance with Drue was perfect. This installment serves at the perfect bridge between the second and third book which also gives a significant emotional impact to the entire series.

The easiest 5 star rating in a long time!

This book should be the blueprint for how you do enemies-to-lovers: from both sides, the banter has a sharp edge to it that stems from some complex trauma; there are feelings of hatred without it being unnecessarily cruel; and their progress to lovers feels organic, like it took the time needed to overcome some serious barriers.

Helen really knows how to pack the emotional gut-punches and The Shadow Prince is no exception. Throughout this story, there are several arcs that brought tears to my eyes. The struggles and losses of the Naarvian people just trying to claw out a living is soul-destroying. The self-hatred Tal has for what he has become is so beautifully handed that it can't help but leave you devastated for him, desperate for him to see himself for the good man that he still is. The fire in Drue's belly to avenge her loved ones at all costs often leaves her walls up in a way that means she shuts herself off from most happiness that comes her way. Whilst it is entirely understandable why she is the way she is, I was screaming at her to let Tal in!

Drue is the kickass FMC that I'm always looking for in my romantasy reads. She's not afraid to defy rules that make no sense. She's not afraid to learn the skills needed to defend herself and she's certainly not afraid to use those skills in battle against some pretty fierce and formidable opponents.

This standalone was easy to read, though by no means does that mean it was a simple story. It holds the perfect balance between angst and wanting, humour, sharp one-liners and truly heartfelt, vulnerable moments. It's not easy feat but Helen pulls it off in a way that feels effortless. This was an incredible read, truly.

Helen Scheuerer has done it again! What a book!

The chemistry between these two characters is some of the best I have read. I adore this world.

This book gives you so much more detail about the world of Thezmarr. It’s a story of hope, rebellion and found family.

Fantastic. Loved it
