FINALIST FOR THE 2025 EYELANDS LITERARY AWARDS

The most dangerous gig of his life – AxMan Flyn is desperate to make his mark.

A fading British rock-star, he grabs a chance to front a high-profile charity concert in the Caribbean and do some good in the world. But hardly has he arrived than he stumbles in on the assassination of the island’s president in a coup. And, to his horror, the new gangster-president frames him as the killer.

AxMan has to go on the run, chased by a police force which is determined to stop him revealing the truth. A real softie, despite a tough stage image, now he’s forced to come out of his shell and fight for his life.

If stories of fish out of water, unlikely heroes and twisty plots strike a chord with you, you’ll love this rollicking witty tale where celebrity rock meets a dangerous underworld of violent mobsters, desperate guerrillas and unscrupulous politicians - and death is on the playlist.

Play Me by Charles Harris
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book completely caught me off guard—in the best possible way. Play Me isn’t just a psychological thriller… it’s a mind game. The kind of story that slowly pulls you in, makes you feel like you understand what’s going on, and then completely flips everything upside down.

I was hooked from the start, and by the end I was sitting there questioning EVERYTHING I had just read.

⚠️ FULL SPOILERS – EVERYTHING ⚠️

From the beginning, the concept itself is already unsettling.

A man finds himself drawn into something that feels like a game—but not in a fun or harmless way. There’s something off about it straight away. The rules aren’t fully clear, the stakes feel too high, and there’s this constant sense that he’s being watched… or controlled.

And that feeling never leaves.

The deeper he gets into this “game,” the more intense things become.

At first, it seems almost manageable.

Strange, yes. Uncomfortable, yes. But still something he thinks he can figure out.

But then the lines start to blur.
Between choice and control.
Between reality and manipulation.
Between what’s part of the game… and what’s real life.

💥 The psychological tension is insane

Charles Harris does such a good job of making you feel trapped alongside the main character.

You’re constantly questioning:
Is he making these choices himself?
Or is he being pushed into them?
Who is behind all of this?
And the scariest part is—you don’t get clear answers straight away.

💥 The game gets darker

What starts off as something mysterious turns into something dangerous.
The tasks escalate.
The pressure builds.
And it becomes clear that this isn’t just a game—it’s something designed to test him, manipulate him, and possibly destroy him.
There are moments where you can feel the loss of control.
Where he realises he’s in too deep.
Where backing out might not even be an option anymore.
And that’s where the tension really hits.

💥 The twists

Just when you think you understand the rules…
They change.
Just when you think you know who’s in control…
You realise you don’t.
There are multiple moments where the story flips completely.
You start to question everything:
The people around him
The purpose of the game
Even his own perception of reality
And each twist adds another layer of complexity.

💥 The manipulation

This book plays heavily on psychological control.
It’s not just about what’s happening—it’s about how it’s affecting him mentally.
The stress.
The paranoia.
The constant second-guessing.
You can feel him starting to unravel as the story goes on.

💥 The truth behind the game

When things finally start to come together…
It’s not simple.
There isn’t just one explanation.
Instead, you’re given a deeper, more unsettling understanding of what’s really been happening.
And it makes you rethink everything.

💥 The ending

The ending is one of those that sticks with you.
It’s not neat.
It’s not fully comforting.
And it leaves you with questions.
You’re left wondering:
Was it ever really a game?
How much control did he actually have?
And what does it all mean?

When I started to read this book, I was unsure whether it was for me or not.
However, I persevered and am very glad I did. This is one of the best books I have read for a very long time and I would thoroughly recommend it.
After a moderrstely slow start, the story really builds up and the booh just gets better and better.
Have not heard of this author before, but hopefully he has written other books!
