Description

Set mostly in contemporary Japan, Takoyaki Tales is a sharp, funny, and quietly unsettling collection of short stories that explores the absurdities and contradictions of everyday life.

Moving between offices, apartments, streets and late-night eateries, these stories capture moments of connection and alienation, intimacy and misunderstanding. A chance encounter, an awkward social exchange, or a seemingly trivial decision can tip ordinary lives into unexpected territory. Beneath the humour and lightness runs a deeper current of loneliness, desire and the strange rituals that shape modern existence.

By turns playful and dark, Takoyaki Tales blends realism with subtle surrealism, offering an outsider’s eye on urban life while revealing universal human anxieties. Wry, observant and deeply humane, this is a collection about the stories we tell ourselves to get through the day, and the small moments that linger long after.

Advance Praise

"Takoyaki Tales is a wide-ranging collection of truly unique and imaginative fiction. In it, Christopher Green displays a superlative talent for transforming everyday situations into highly readable, often hilarious, always entertaining stories." David Joiner, author of the literary novels The Heron Catchers, Kanazawa, and Lotusland

“Christopher Green takes mundane moments and spins them into engaging--and wrenching--psychological tribulations. Hard to put the book down in the middle of a story… Psychological thrillers reminiscent of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allen Poe." Steve Redford, author of Spider Lilies Bleed

Such a delightful selection of stories. If you think short stories are not for you, these will change your mind. I particularly enjoyed the stories set in Japan. Some a just quirky, some fantasy, but all are different. Ideal for reading on your commute or on the beach. I've already recommended this book to others!

I really enjoyed this collection! The stories were funny in some places but also had this strange, slightly unsettling feeling that I really liked. I enjoyed seeing all the little oddities of everyday life in contemporary Japan and how each story had its own thing going on. A really interesting collection that had me thinking about some of the stories after I finished them.
