Georgia Carter Smith was born in 1926, one of five children to farmers in Oklahoma. The Great Depression hit them hard and after their father died, the youngest children in the family were left in the care of the Tulsa Home for Children. After a sketchy adoption and subsequent return to the orphanage, Georgia became homeless at the age of twelve, before finding her “forever home” and family as a teenager. Georgia always believed that her mother would return for her and continued to search for her throughout her life.
