'Friends references, a New York Summer and a gorgeous tiny dog called Thor – what's not to love? It was a big hug in a book and I'm completely smitten!' - Carrie Elks, author of Strictly Business
You never know when love may come knocking...
Hopeless romantic and romance editor Elle Thompson lives for happy endings – but real-life love? Not so much. Still, she's totally thrilled when her best friend gets engaged. Really. Not jealous at all.
Meanwhile, Oliver Cole likes things a certain way. Schedules and routines and order. So when his move back to New York is disrupted by the addition of Thor – the dog his sister adopted before moving to Italy – he's less than delighted. Even less enthused? His neighbour, Elle.
When Elle can't bear to hear Thor howling all night, she and Oliver strike a deal: she'll dog-sit during his shifts. But their reluctant arrangement soon leads to late-night chats, undeniable chemistry, and two guarded hearts learning to open up. Could Elle and Oliver finally get their own happily ever after?

This was such a cute, cozy read. Elle and Oliver’s story brings all the feels while not shying away from more difficult topics. Don’t worry, these are all listed in the trigger warnings at the beginning.
Overall, if you’re looking for that feeling of falling in love with someone, this is definitely the book to pick up.
I really related to Elle and the feeling of being a hype girl in someone else’s main storyline while perhaps neglecting your own a little. I loved how Oliver made her feel truly cherished.
Thank you to Aria and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Overall rating: 3.5 stars
“For anyone who feels like the hype girl. You’re the main character of your own story.”
Honestly, that dedication alone had me. Before I’d even started the story, I already knew I was going to love this book.
The One Where They Fall in Love by Cristina Wolf is such a gorgeous, feel-good rom com with heart. From the very beginning, you can tell this is a story that understands people, especially when it comes to mental health. The way Cristina acknowledges that everyone experiences things differently felt so thoughtful and genuine, and it really set the tone for the rest of the book.
The characters are easy to fall for, with fantastic chemistry that feels completely natural. Their connection is so palpable that you find yourself rooting for them from the start. There’s a lovely balance between humour, friendship, and romance, and those friend dynamics really add to the warmth of the story.
I also loved the little moments where the book leans into its rom com roots, the awareness of tropes, the banter, and the overall vibe just made it such an enjoyable read. Plus that romance, the chemistry is definitely there. The spice is written in a way that feels both emotional and intense without being overdone, that final chapter especially had that perfect mix of angst and “hot under the collar” energy, but still felt delicate and true to the characters.
“Your dreams are like the stars. They might be in the distance, but if you can see them, you can reach them."
That quote really stayed with me, and honestly captures the heart of this story.
For me, the only thing that held it just shy of a full five stars was the miscommunication trope. I know a lot of readers love it, but it’s just not a personal favourite of mine, and there were moments where I found myself wanting the characters to just talk to each other. That said, it didn’t take away from how much I still genuinely enjoyed the story.
The epilogue was absolutely adorable and left me closing the book with such a happy feeling. I’m already looking forward to whatever Cristina Wolf writes next.
A warm, romantic, and genuinely uplifting read that reminds you you’re the main character in your own story.

Hopeless romantic Elle, who believes in happily ever after for everyone but herself, is thrown together with her routine-loving neighbour Oliver when they strike a dog-sitting deal. What begins as reluctant teamwork soon sparks late-night chats, growing chemistry, and the chance for two guarded hearts to find their own happily ever after.
I have to say, the meet-cute was perfect. It wasn’t the usual “catch each other’s eyes and fall in love” moment, it felt fresh and brilliant.
Both Elle and Oliver had great main-couple energy, and I really enjoyed the dual perspectives. It helped capture who they were and made it easier to connect with them.
I could relate to some of Elle’s moments, and it did bring a tear to my eye, not because it was sad, but because it felt realistic and human.
This is the first novel I’ve read by Cristina, and I loved it. The way she slowly built the connection between Elle and Oliver was brilliant. Overall, a great, uplifting romance read.
Thanks to NetGalley for the copy.
Who doesn’t love a good love story! And with a cute dog? You don’t get any better! I lived thus the chemistry and late night chats so good
This was such a sweet and uplifting romance. Elle completely stole the show with her chaotic, lovable “main character energy,” while Oliver’s quieter personality and struggles with pressure and OCD added so much heart to the story. Their unconventional meet-cute and supportive friendship made the romance feel natural, emotional, and impossible not to root for.
This story has everything that makes a good rom-com : it's funny, cozy, with endearing characters and the cutest dog ever.
The title is a Friends reference of course, as Elle is a fan of the show.
Elle is a people's pleaser and hype girl in search of a new purpose. Oliver a reluctant doctor. They both need to be cheer up and they find that in each other after the funniest meet cute. Their neighborly friendship evolves naturally to a relationship.
The author writes their dynamic very well, and the NYC setting made me think of the movie When Harry meets Sally.
If you need a feel good story with heart, this book is for you!

I loved this book. This is my second book by this author and i loved it as much as last years How to Write a Rom-Com. I loved the NYC setting it has such strong Friends vibes and being a big fan of the show it was just great. The OCD storyline resonated with me a lot because i am a severe sufferer of this and sometimes becomes a struggle to leave the house for months at a time. It was more thank right how it was covered in this book and only a person with this debilitating illness could understand us all.
I would love to see this made into a movie. It was so sweet and would make a perfect Hallmark movie. I fell in love with Elle and Oliver and Thor the dog. Can't wait to read another book by this author.
I really want to thank the publisher for getting in touch with me after writing a lovely review last year and to think of me and giving me an ARC copy of this.
I can't recommend this book highly enough once again it's a winner for me and I've already pre-ordered my copy on paperback.

this read was all kind of wonderful. i loved it. i mean you start off with a way in to my heart by including a dog.
Oliver and Elle live in the same building. Oliver had a dog but does shifts that mean said dog is not happy.
and Elle is on the receiving end of this not happy dog because she lives in the same building. so they strike up a dog sitting deal.
i loved Elle so much. shes the type of book characters you warm to from the very beginning. shes one you think will be a great friend and gorgeous human. seeing her react to feeling left out of love was so relatable. her interaction when Oliver stepped onto the scene was just too utterly charming. these two had me from the get- go!
i felt for Oliver too. his situation isn't one of his making. its one of tough shifts and hard work and i felt for him as well. his growth throughout the book was brilliantly done.
when these two reluctantly come together with the deal it starts off as something reluctantly needed. but together this little pair(or should we say three) start to connect, hold chats, feel chemistry and feels those guarded hearts of theirs become softer, kinder and maybe even like they might want to take a chance on something wonderful happening here.
this connection, how we get to watch it happen felt so true, solid and perfect. every moment with them seeing something truly lovely grow for the pair had me feeling all lovely inside too. it felt genuine. it felt like it has to be!
Elle was someone i could just sit with all day. she got me a little emotional at times too. this woman deserved the world.
i loved this book. i honestly loved it. couldn't ask for more when going in. and yet it still managed to give it. when you read about someone making your life better like these two did for each other, life just feels that much better in itself. and whilst reading this book that is indeed what i felt.

Cristina Wolf is fast becoming a new favourite author of mine, that is two books out of two now that she has written and that I have totally fallen in love with.
Elle our leading lady is best friends with Lucy from "How to Write a Rom-Com" so the books are related, but I do believe this can be read as a total standalone. But why deprive yourself of an excellent other book!
So Elle is trying to get used to living alone and she has a new neighbour. Who just happens to be rather noisy, and worse seems to leave his poor dog alone all night barking. Ollie is in fact a med student and working shifts, and is looking after Thor for his sister, and trying to get used to being back in New York.
There is a wonderful meet cute between them, which I think could be referred to as the one where Elle sleeps outside Ollie's door all night, while letting Thor lick peanut butter off her fingers!
For you see there are Friends references throughout this, which I absolutely adored and given the title of the book probably shouldn't be a surprise to hear either!
I loved how Ollie and Elle start pet sharing Thor and at the same time Elle is determined to get Ollie happier to be in New York since she loves a project. She also sees Ollie for who he really is which is really refreshing.
I loved the connection between our two leads, in this grumpy - sunshine rom com, and generally enjoyed all of the writing and character development.
This is a fun story with depth and I was totally hooked on this.
Thank you to Aria and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
The One Where They Fall in Love
By Cristina Wolf
Publication Date: 13 August 2026
Cristina Wolf delivers a heartwarming romantic comedy that perfectly balances humour, emotion, and slow-burn chemistry. The One Where They Fall in Love is a charming story about finding love when you least expect it, wrapped up in a cosy New York setting that feels as comforting as the romance itself.
Elle and Oliver are wonderfully different characters whose reluctant partnership gradually blossoms into something genuine and believable. Their banter is engaging, their emotional growth feels natural, and watching their relationship develop is both entertaining and satisfying. Add in Thor, the lovable dog who steals every scene he's in, and the story gains an extra layer of warmth and heart.
The novel captures the excitement, uncertainty, and vulnerability of opening your heart, while also celebrating friendship, fresh starts, and the idea that happy endings don't always arrive the way we imagine. Fans of romantic comedies, forced proximity, and feel-good contemporary romance will find plenty to enjoy.
A delightful, uplifting read filled with humour, lovable characters, and a romance that's impossible not to root for.

I once had a neighbor when I was younger, he lived directly up my house and he makes so much noise, it’s so so so annoying ! Do I think we would have a romance thing going on??? Absolutely NOT but is this book so cute, YESSS!
I enjoyed reading this book so much. I blushed, I smiled, I frowned. It’s just so beautifully written. I’m so happy I got this ARC. Thanks to Netgallery and the publishing company for approving me to read this books. I love it so much, I’ve acquired the author and their books lol

I enjoyed this light, amusing story. Elle and Oliver are opposites, and at first it appears that they are going to hate each other. Indeed, both are more than happy for that to be the case, but they can’t fight the growing attraction that they feel. True to form with the best romantic fiction, they are pulled together then torn apart. Don’t despair; the author knows what we demand and gives it to us. Summer fiction that ticks the box.
Another fantastic romance novel from. Cristina Wolf. Can be read as a stand alone but does follow on from her first novel. Cutsey 'friends' vibe, this bookhad enemies to friends to lovers all through the companionship of a dog. The characters are so lovable, it is a slow burn with some spicy elements. I really enjoyed this story.

Such a sweet, heartwarming romance! I loved the slow-burn chemistry between Elle and Oliver, and Thor completely stole the show. Their relationship developed naturally, with plenty of banter, emotional growth, and feel-good moments. A cozy, charming read that left me smiling from beginning to end.
I accidentally read this until 1 a.m. and somehow still wanted "just one more chapter."
This romance feels less like an escape and more like peeking into two real people's lives. It's messy, emotionally exhausting, frustrating and surprisingly authentic.
The inclusion of OCD, anxiety, and deep insecurity grounds the story in reality, even incorporating coping strategies that are actually used in therapy.
What worked:
Oliver completely won me over. A kind, well-built doctor with OCD, anxiety, a cute dog, and a protective streak? Yeah... sign me up!
The pacing is fantastic. At just over 300 pages, I flew through it in about five hours because something was always happening.
The mental health representation felt genuine instead of becoming the characters' entire personality.
What didn't:
The relationship became frustrating rather than emotionally tense. Oliver spends so much time pushing Elle away that I eventually wanted to shake him and yell, "You're thirty. Get your shit together."
I also missed that slow, unbearable build-up. I always knew they'd end up together, it just took them forever to stop sabotaging themselves.
If you're looking for a contemporary romance with realistic characters, mental health representation, forced proximity, a protective MMC, and plenty of emotional angst, I think you'll have a great time.
For me, it was an incredibly addictive read that just needed a little more romantic tension and a little less self-inflicted drama.

This was such a cute and heartwarming read! As someone who actually had a noisy neighbor growing up, I can confidently say I never imagined falling in love with one—but this book definitely made the idea feel charming.
Oliver and Elle were so easy to root for. I loved their slow-burn romance, the fun banter, the adorable dog, and all the Friends references sprinkled throughout the story. The multiple POVs also helped me connect with both characters, and I really appreciated how Oliver's OCD was handled with care and compassion.
There were a couple of moments that didn't completely work for me, especially the attempt to set Elle up with someone else, but it wasn't enough to take away from how much I enjoyed the story.
Overall, this was a sweet, funny, feel-good romance that left me smiling. If you're looking for a cozy rom-com with lovable characters, great chemistry, and plenty of heart, I'd definitely recommend it.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and Cristina Wolf for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
Is this book specifically written for millennials who still believe in happily ever afters? Honestly… it feels like it might be
*Friends references?
*Set in NYC?
*A meet-WTF instead of a meet-cute?
*Rom-com vibes?
This book had everything I look for in a feel-good romance, and I had such a great time reading it!
I loved that it's told in dual POV, it's one of my favourite things in rom-coms because you really get to see both characters fall in love. Elle and Oliver were so much fun together, and the grumpy sunshine dynamic never gets old.
Thor absolutely stole the show. This adorable little doggo was the perfect sidekick!
If you're a rom-com connoisseur, you will have a great time with this one, I'd definitely recommend!

this book just healed a part of me i swear. i absolutely flew through this and read it in two sittings, there was not one moment where i wasn’t hooked. elle and oliver had such depth and watching them slowly drop their walls for each other had my heart exploding. there was the perfect mixture of banter, tension and emotional depth. both elle and oliver had their own issues and seeing how that shaped their lives was just so real. and oliver… he had me feeling seen, as someone going through what he struggles with i felt like i was not so alone with it all. i think this book will stay with me for a looooong time
I loved this, I loved the romance, there was great banter, and obviously we can't forget the character who absolutely stole the show (he's the actual VIP main character): Thor. I really like the characters, with Elle being so kind and funny and yes she will do extreme things (case in point with Thor) but I love it. Oliver might seem grumpy at first glance and he has a bit of a hard shell, but he comes through for the people he cares about and he was so relatable for me in ways, so yeah I love him.
I did think that Elle was harsh towards Oliver when there was the conflict, but I understand that it's also her own fears and past experiences influencing that, so I do understand where it came from, but I just felt for Oliver so much. I loved when they communicated, because I love these two together! I loved the conclusion of the story and where the characters ended up!
Oh and I absolutely loved them going around NYC, I really love that city, so I thought it was a great addition that made NYC not only the setting of the story but also gave it a more prominent place in the story.
Overall, I think this was a great read that had a light side, but also some heavier topics (so do check the trigger warnings) and I'd definitely recommed reading it!
