David Raver is hours away from leaving Ashford for a prestigious trauma program in Washington. All he has to do first is finish one last late-night pizza delivery.
Instead, he hears a scream beneath a stranger’s house.
David has always been drawn to the things other people fear. It is the one instinct he has never learned to control—and this time, it leads him through the wrong door and into the hands of a killer who doesn’t see him as just another victim.
Detective Mike Raver is already hunting a ritualistic murderer turning Ashford into a nightmare. Then the case becomes personal.
Now, a father is racing to find his son while David fights to survive a horror built on punishment, obedience, and the darkest parts of himself. Because if Mike doesn’t reach him in time, David won’t just die in that house.
He’ll become part of it.

Father by Sandrine B is a short read that absolutely hits hard from page one 👀 It opens with a creepy horror scene that had my attention straight away.
Dark, eerie and intense the whole way through, with religious undertones that added so much to the atmosphere 😳 It also dives into some heavy family issues, which gave the story extra depth.
I love when a story goes all in and keeps that same energy the entire way through, and this one definitely does 👏 I’m really impressed with this author, so much so that I’ve already downloaded A Fatal Duet and can’t wait to read it. Also the cover is brilliant and such a draw card 🖤📚

I am so incredibly glad I stumbled across this book! *Father* is the first installment of *The Raver Files* series, and it is officially on my radar as a new series to watch out for. If you love dark psychological thrillers with a horror edge, you’ll definitely want to pick this up.
What I Loved:
*The Content Warning: First off, huge kudos to the author for including a reader’s advisory/trigger warning section at the beginning. Personally, I read a lot of dark genres, so it didn’t affect me, but I deeply appreciate authors who look out for their readers that way.
* Fast-Paced Action: Since this is a novella, it gets *right* into the main dish. Sometimes short stories still manage to pack in too many distractions or filler scenes, but not this one. There are no "commercial breaks" the pacing is tight, the chapters are short, and the momentum never stops.
* A Mind-Bending Twist Right from the Start:Right out of the gate, the book hits you with a massive "WTF?!" moment. The story sets up an incredible connection between Detective Mike Raver's ritualistic murder case and a dark legacy from a decade ago. On top of that, David has this fascinating, almost supernatural ability called "the slip," where he can tap into visions of the past. The way the author weaves these elements together completely messed with my head in the best way possible. It had me flipping back chapters just to re-read details and admire how well the mystery was set up.
Room for Improvement:
My only real critique lies in some of the dialogue and descriptions regarding the medical side of things. The story features a medical student protagonist and some police procedural/morgue scenes which I usually love it feels like watching Forensic Files!. However, the author relies heavily on complex medical jargon, down to the specific types of sutures used on victims. While you can easily Google these terms, using such dense technical language in a fiction book felt a bit dry and pulled me out of the story's intense atmosphere. It would have felt a lot punchier and smoother if it had been written in layman's terms.
Aside from that minor speed bump, my biggest complaint is simply that it ended too soon! The book leaves you on a massive cliffhanger that will have you begging for the next installment. I can't wait for Book 2!
