What an absolute train wreck! Jessamyn is one of the most fascinating unlikeable protagonist I’ve come across in some time. She’s not a mere actor. No, she’s a musical theatre prodigy, a gift and a rare talent. When she’s offered to chaperone the child actors in the newest play at the theatre where she works as an usher, it’s clear it’s actually her time to shine and grab the lead role.

Jessamyn is also delusional. The perpetual victim, the one that’s always hard done by. Did I mention everyone is also in love with her?

The whole story was one prolonged cringe fest. My toes curled in horror as I was dying of secondhand embarrassment, internally screaming “Girl, no!” at an increasing frequency.

I was eating this up. A chaotic psycho, a delusional narcissist, Jessamyn is one memorable villain I couldn’t get enough of.

This book is for all Yellowface lovers or Yesteryear lovers or just someone who enjoys good contemporary fiction.
You'll find yourself hating and feeling pity for the character in the same line. The story is gripping, fast paced, revealing, and in simple words, packs a punch.
It's relentless, page after page a detail breakdown of someone's breakdown or downfall.
An artist, the struggle, the desire, the limits (beyond imagination),
The helplessness is really felt in the few pages.
I wish the ending was slightly different, or maybe not.
I wish they bring it to life on screen.

What a book! I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. The fmc Jessamyn was completely unhinged and delusional, yet I couldn’t help finding myself rooting for her by the end of the book!

I found it exceptionally entertaining and I loved that it featured The Sound of Music stage show.

I also listened to the audiobook which was absolutely fantastic. This book is hilarious, yet so dark in places. I will definitely be checking out anything else written by Meredith Hambrock!

She's a Lamb is about Jessamyn, a performer whose talent has not been discovered yet. She auditions for the lead in a musical production of The Sound of Music, but inexplicably ends up as the child minder for the brats playing the Von Trapp children. This must be some cruel joke. Unless the director wanted her close to the lead, as an unofficial understudy. Determined to take her rightful place as the lead, Jessamyn stops at nothing to get what she wants. No, deserves.

Oh wow. Where to begin?
I picked this book because it has everything I love: musical, theatre, a diva main character and Sunset Boulevard vibes.
I expected a hilarious comedy and it delivered that and more. It was funny, but at the same time profound and harrowing.

Jessamyn's character is fundamentally flawed. She is not the hero of this story. She stops at nothing to get what she wants, she lies and manipulates and doesn't shy away from violence. Bit by bit, however, we are shown that the world has not treated her kindly. Many of the things she has had to deal with are unfortunately very familiar to most women. Sexual harassment, being belittled by men, transactional relationships, parental neglect, rivalry with other women, and so on and so forth. She is a tragic product of her surroundings and I found myself rooting for her even though the decisions she makes are definitely not morally justifiable.

The story makes us think about what it means to be a woman in showbiz, and the dangers of ambition. Jessamyn's delusions make her unable to see clearly. She starts to unravel and hurts others to get what she wants. This is all the more tragic because her hyper fixation on The Sound of Music makes her turn down a part that she would have been perfect for in a theatre production of Sister Gorgeous. I think, ultimately, she chose this path because she didn't want to be confronted with her own feelings. The Sister Gorgeous part is real, raw emotion and it confronts Jessamyn too much with the person she is. She doesn't want that because it makes her confront her own pain. The musical part is beautiful, idealised and it lets her pretend to be someone else, someone who is better.

In the end, of course, Jessamyn's lies catch up to her and she is arrested during the opening of the play. The ending is tragic, but ends on a hopeful note: Sophie, the young woman her father married, steps up to defend Jessamyn in the end when the police hurt her as she is being held down. It's a true kindness that Jessamyn has not experienced much at all during her life. It was shown to her not by her own father, but by a woman who perhaps understands what Jessamyn has been through. Women should form a sisterhood and protect each other! Hell yeah!

This was so profound and meaningful to me that I will be thinking about it for a long time. I heartily recommend it to anyone!

Jessamyn St. Germain (yep) knows she’s destined to be a star, she’s just biding her time with commercial work until she gets her well-deserved break. And her break WILL BE Maria Von Trapp in an upcoming theatre production of The Sound of Music. Even when her rival, Samantha, books the part instead hope is not lost because Jessamyn has been recruited as the onset nanny to keep the children actors in line. Not only will Jessamyn have time to perfect her performance *just in case* Samantha is unable to perform for some mysterious reason, but her relationship with the “Von Trapp” children further feeds her delusions.

She’s a Lamb! is an incredible display of a woman being pushed to spiral from ambition and entitlement and I LOVED every second. Jessamyn is vindictive and awfully unintentionally funny. You can resist as hard as you like but you will root for her until you come to your senses. The whole cast of characters is phenomenally written - they’re very strong archetypes but they don’t cross the line into cliche territory. All their relationships are simple and executed to a tee. I really cannot praise this cast enough, I couldn’t identify a single gap to be filled or a character that felt expendable.

I’m desperate to read more from Meredith Hambrock because even if you put this incredible story aside, everything is THERE! Pacing, great dialogue, tension, THE ENDING!!!!! I truly wouldn’t change a thing. This book is sharp, witty and refreshing and I highlyyyyy recommend.
