Eleven-year-old Annika may be heir to the ocean-ruled kingdom of Iffenwild, but she’d much rather be sailing with her traveling theater troupe than learning how to be queen. But when her beloved uncle Max - the king - returns gravely injured from a secret mission to the Utter North, her world shifts in an instant.
Determined to find a long-lost cure, Annika journeys into the frozen North: a land of towering ice cliffs, frozen seas, and powerful ice magic. But the deeper she ventures, the clearer it becomes that something far darker is stirring. If Annika fails, it won’t just be her uncle’s life at stake - it will be the fate of the entire magical world.
A thrilling standalone adventure set in the award-winning, bestselling Greenwild universe, which has enchanted thousands of readers across the globe:

A stunning return to the magical world of Greenwild. A rich, adventurous story full of love, loss, wondrous creatures and found family. I loved Annika, Connie, Jesper and everyone. It had everything, heart, humour, danger, peril, high stakes and some very formidable villains. I loved the illustrations too. A perfect read. Five stars. Thank you so much to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an ARC.

A Welcome Return To The Greenwild & Iffenwild World, The Frozen King Works Well As A Standalone But Is Full Of Little Character Cameos To Appeal To Readers Of The Original Trilogy. The Frozen King Follows 12 Year Old Annika (A Baby In The Original Trilogy) Along With Her Companion Connie Travel On A Thrilling Adventure Across The Utter North To Find A Cure, To Save Her Uncle King Max Before It's Too Late. The Book Is Full Of Beautiful And Wonderfully Detailed Illustrations And The Writing Style Is Fast-Paced And Makes The Rich & Vibrant World Come Alive With Magic (Green, Blue Or Ice). I Loved Elska & Bjorn The Husky's And The Story Had Some Fabulous And Unexpected Twists. I Loved The Ending And The Story Was So Captivating, I Got Lost In The Pages For Hours Without Realising.
Thank You To NetGalley And The Publisher For The ARC.

The Frozen King is an absolute triumph of a standalone novel in the world of Greenwild! Within pages, everything inside me went ‘this is something special’ and I was right. Annika’s story is one that I think both young readers and adults alike can relate to about trying to find our own place in the world and learning what makes us unique and it’s told masterfully! Safe to say, I couldn’t put it down.
I was wondering how this would tie in with the Greenwild trilogy and it’s safe to say that is done in a wave of brilliance also. I won’t give anything away, but some old favourites do make an appearance and The Frozen King gives us all that nostalgia for what came before in all the best of ways. Annika and Connie are sensational protagonists whose development across the 300+ pages is marvellous, within chapters you feel like you’ve known them a lifetime.
One thing no one will ever be able to take away from Pari Thomson is her absolute expertise in world building and atmosphere creation. Greenwild, the Marindeep, and now the Utter North are so vivid in the pages and further brought to life by the exquisite illustrations of Elisa Paganelli, that I fully believe they exist somewhere out there and one day I may be fortunate enough to stumble across them.
Sometimes there’s a trepidation with standalone novels following a successful series as they fall flat against the original works, but The Frozen King is not one of those. This book will absolute excel the expectations of any Greenwild fan and is proof that there’s still so much of this world of Pari Thomson’s to explore as/when she wishes to return to it. The PERFECT half-term read (if you can bear waiting that long), this is one to get pre-ordered asap!

I absolutely loved returning to the Greenwild world with The Frozen King. Having enjoyed the original series so much, I was delighted to discover that this standalone adventure takes us back ten years later, while still feeling fresh enough to tell a completely new story.
This time we follow eleven-year-old Annika, heir to the ocean-ruled kingdom of Iffenwild, although she would much rather be travelling with her theatre troupe than preparing to become queen. When her uncle Max returns gravely injured from a secret mission, Annika sets out in search of a long-lost cure, taking her deep into the frozen North. What follows is a wonderfully imaginative adventure filled with towering ice cliffs, frozen seas, ice magic and a growing threat that puts far more than one life at stake.
The world-building is once again brilliant. Pari Thomson creates a magical world that feels incredibly rich and multi-layered, and I particularly loved the creativity of the snowy setting in this one. There is so much imagination woven into the places, creatures and magic that it is very easy to lose yourself in the story.
The characters are another real strength. Annika is immensely likeable precisely because she isn’t perfect; she makes mistakes, questions herself and grows as the story unfolds. The supporting characters feel equally well-rounded, and I loved seeing some familiar faces from the original Greenwild books appearing alongside the new cast. Those connections are such a lovely reward for existing fans without making the story inaccessible to newcomers.
Magical, adventurous, beautifully imagined and full of heart. The Frozen King reminded me exactly why I loved this series in the first place, while expanding its world in a way that made it feel exciting all over again. A very easy five stars.

I love the Greenwild series so much and I was sad when the last book said it was the end of the trilogy. So I was super excited that Pari hasn't left the world of Greenwild completely.
If you want to believe in magic again, read the Greenwild books - you won't doubt the existence of magic anymore. And once again Elisa's illustrations are beautiful and really add an extra layer to the story.
It's been a while since I read the last Greenwild book and whilst I know this is set in the future of that trilogy, I was still a little worried I'd forget important aspects but I didn't. You're immediately drawn into this world, and even though it's a new story, there's still so much about it that was recognisable, like returning home.
The way she's described the location gives it so much atmosphere. You'll find yourself almost shivering with the cold like the characters - which after what seems like a never-ending heatwave was a nice change.
I like how she's given two views on magic. In books, kids books especially, magic is often seen as fun and exciting. And it is. But it can also be harsh and dangerous and I like that Pari has balanced both.
I wondered if I'd miss the original characters because, whilst they are in this book, they're more mentions, used to propel Annika's story. But I didn't. They're great little flashbacks for those of us who have read the original trilogy, but the new characters are just as interesting to read about and follow on this journey.
There's one thread that goes through the original series and now this one, and that's the connection to nature and animals. It's a beautiful thing and I think Pari does an exceptional job at depicting it.
There are some serious topics in it - I won't spoil it - and whilst they're done sensitively, at no point does it lose its foundation which is a fun, exciting, adventurous, fantasy story for young readers.
It's one of those books where you say, "Just one more chapter", and you keep saying that until you're finished. It's not a short book and would probably be considered quite a long one for the reading age, but it's so addictive that it flies by.
I wonder if this is the start of a new series or just a one-off visit, but I'm really hoping it'll be a new series because it's just epic.
