Description

Intimate Details teaches writers how to craft one of the trickiest aspects of a romance novel: the sex scenes.

Sex scenes are surprisingly difficult for both new and experienced authors. This guide will help you answer all sorts of questions, including some you may not know you had. What’s the difference between erotica and suggestive sex scenes? Does erotica have to include whips and chains? What should you do if you don’t know anything about BDSM? How long should a sex scene be? How many sex scenes do you need? What’s “normal” for a sex scene, and how far can you deviate from that? What are your characters supposed to say while they’re having sex?

Whether you’re writing from experience or fantasy, Intimate Details can guide you toward creating sensual, cohesive sex scenes.

I received an eARC, from NetGalley and the publisher, in exchange for an honest review.
This is about 40 pages that go over the different types of loves scene that are there to help you with your writing. I am not a writer but I do reviews and wanted to educate myself better on how authors write their books. I found this book to be very good and beneficial really to anyone that loves to write, read or review. It was a easy to understand informational book. I would recommend this book!

Good basic manual of what different kinds of scenes are in different romances (i.e. Christian/Inspirational, erotica, etc...) and what the readers expect. Looks like it would be very useful for the beginning romance writer.

Intimate Details: Elements of a Sex Scene is a must read for all romance writers, new and seasoned, providing helpful direction and tips. Some are pretty thorough, but the author is quick to point out that these are but a guide and there is great leeway for personal touches.

I don’t know if my favorite authors have read this book, had a great editor, or are naturally gifted writers, but, for the most part, they adhere to the widely accepted romance writing guidelines, metaphors, and tropes. Why? Because they work. They help move the story and provides insight for the reader.

There are lots of expectations in romance, but they don’t have to be banal or clichéd. A writer’s style/voice is what makes a story unique. Boredom is what kills a story. I can overlook, clichés, bad dialogue, and unbelievable arcs as long as I feel some emotion. I’m not too picky about which one. I admire and appreciate all writers. Every book that I pick up has intrigued me in some way. It could be the blurb, the cover, review or sample. Sometimes, my expectations are dashed, but I am always hopeful that my current read will be the next big thing. I want nothing more than to cheer for the protagonist and resent the bad guy. I want to root for you! But sometimes there is an element missing. And that’s why Cox’s input becomes so important. It is sage, supportive advice with a humorous slant. Intimate Details perfectly articulates my feelings about likes and dislikes in a book. The information found in this guide is an excellent constructive feedback and review tool. I can’t wait to read more from Beyond the Style Manual series and I hope you do too!
