What it’s about: a woman rebuilds herself after her mother shoots her abusive father, navigating trauma, caregiving, and a fight for her own freedom.

This memoir broke me open. I loved Deborah’s raw honesty. She doesn’t flinch from the ugliness — generational trauma, addiction, chronic illness, courtrooms — but she finds grace in it. I felt her exhaustion caring for her paralyzed wife while the media circled, and her quiet bravery choosing sobriety when everything collapsed.

The plot isn’t linear healing. It’s fire. I liked how she traces the path from Arkansas chaos to California light, with yoga studios and lake water as unexpected sanctuaries. The love story at the center is fierce and grounding. It proves you can choose family, choose yourself.

How it made me feel: wrecked, cleansed, and hopeful. It’s for anyone who’s carried their family’s pain and wondered if they’re allowed to put it down. This is survival, forgiveness, and rebirth told with guts and heart. I finished it breathing deeper.

This was not the book I expected it to be...but I think it was actually better than the book I expected It to be! Given that it starts off at the point when the author's mother murders her abusive father, I imagined that the "fire" of the title would be a long, drawn-out murder trial and the associated tumult. However, it's an entirely different tragedy that not long afterward upends Deborah Samuel's life with her wife and forms the bulk of the story she tells here. It is difficult to say more without spoilers, but I was along for the ride with her, and she's a good writer. I ended up glad to have read her story and glad that she came to the point of telling it.

Wow. This book is multilayered and definitely not what I had imagined. So much more. This book is not to be missed. Loved it.
