Having successfully restored an endangered species of wildcat to its home on Linger Island, Puffin now has a new responsibility - looking after kuri kitten Noma! And when the next adventure finds Puffin and her friend Lance, Noma is there to play the part of her adorable sidekick.

Weaving together environmental concerns, elements of magic and myth, and well drawn characters - portrayed throughout in a series of beautiful black and white illustrations - this is a gorgeous story.

The Wildcat and the Gathering Storm
Author: Lui Sit
Illustrator: David Dean
Series: The Wildcat Series
Publisher: Macmillan Children's Books
Release Date: 10 September 2026

Rating: 4/5

Lui Sit delivers another engaging adventure in The Wildcat and the Gathering Storm, blending fantasy, wildlife conservation and friendship into a fast-paced middle-grade story. Returning to the magical world introduced in Land of the Last Wildcat, this sequel expands the adventure while introducing an irresistible new character in the spirited wildcat kitten, Noma.

Puffin continues to grow as a brave and compassionate protagonist, facing new responsibilities while balancing family, friendship and unexpected danger. Noma adds plenty of humour and heart to the story, with her curious personality and emerging mythical powers creating both charming and suspenseful moments. The bond between the characters feels genuine, making it easy to become invested in their journey.

The environmental themes are woven naturally into the plot, encouraging younger readers to think about conservation without ever feeling preachy. The story is filled with mystery, action and magical moments that keep the pages turning, while David Dean's beautiful black-and-white illustrations add extra atmosphere throughout.

This is a wonderful sequel for readers who enjoy animal adventures, mythical creatures and stories with an important message about protecting the natural world. Full of excitement, heart and memorable characters, The Wildcat and the Gathering Storm is an enjoyable read that will appeal to both returning fans and younger readers discovering the series for the first time.
