Description

Anna was fourteen when she met David. Twenty-nine when she finally let him go.

One girl growing up in the loud, beautiful chaos of the early 2000s punk rock scene, chasing music, chasing him, chasing the version of herself she thought she was supposed to be.

David turned every lyric into a promise. Anna believed every one of them. But love at fourteen isn't love at twenty-nine, and somewhere between garage rehearsals and festival stages, between first kisses and farewell emails, she had to learn the difference between being someone's muse and being her own.

What We Left on Stage is Daisy Jones & the Six meets Gilmore Girls, an emotional, music-soaked coming-of-age novel about first love, growing up, and the songs that mark us forever.

Each chapter comes with its own original Spotify playlist. 11 playlists. 200+ songs. One girl, fifteen years, one unforgettable story.

I love a good coming of age story, and Hernandez definitely smashed it. It was a joy watching Anna grow, love, and heal. The music angle was a bit cheesy but not in a bad way. It reminded me of Wattpad days when authors wrote stories based off an album. It was very nostalgic.

What We Left on Stage
Author: Valerie Hernandez
Publication Date: 4 November 2025
Rating: 4/5

What We Left on Stage was such an emotional and nostalgic read, especially with the early 2000s punk rock setting running through the whole story.

We follow Anna from the age of fourteen, when she first meets David, right through to twenty-nine, when she finally learns to let him go. Their relationship grows and changes alongside them, and I really liked how the book showed that the person you love when you're young isn't always the person you're meant to be with forever.

There were definitely moments when I wanted to give Anna a little shake, but I think that's also what made her feel real. She spends so much time chasing David and trying to be the person she thinks she should be that she slowly loses sight of who she is without him. Watching her begin to understand the difference between being someone's muse and actually living for herself was probably my favourite part.

The music plays such a huge role in the story and really adds to the nostalgia. I also absolutely love the idea of every chapter having its own original Spotify playlist. With 11 playlists and over 200 songs, it makes the book feel like an experience rather than just something you're reading.

A lovely, bittersweet coming-of-age story about first love, heartbreak, music and finally choosing yourself. If you grew up around the early 2000s music scene, I think this one will bring back plenty of memories.

WHAT WE LEFT ON STAGE is not a book, but an experience. Accompanied by a Spotify soundtrack (there are QR codes with the chapters so you can really immerse yourself in the world of the book), Anna moves from place to place, song to song, and man to man with each iteration of herself. This is a coming-of-age story with all the flavor of the 2000s and the songs and movies that made it memorable. Anna is a Holly Golightly of the new millennium, and I loved experiencing her world.
