Description

Peter thought his life would look different at thirty-two. Instead, he’s stuck bartending in Thunder Bay, drinking too much, and watching his ambitions slip away. But when an opportunity to relocate to Ottawa arises, Peter sees a chance to reinvent himself.

He meets like-minded Ruby one night in a pub, and before long he has built his world around her. But alcohol-fuelled nights soon give way to constant arguments, eating away at their little paradise. Fearful of ending up alone again, Peter becomes determined to hold everything together — even as he starts losing himself in the process.

A raw and emotionally grounded contemporary novel, Birds Beyond Reach explores relationships, addiction, and the difference between loving someone and needing them.

This was a very good book and a look at toxic relationships on both side. The theme of addiction is also explored and between that and toxic relationships, the characters are extremely relatable. I was rooting for Peter the whole way through. This book is very raw and real. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Review will be posted on Instagram and Amazon on pub day and links added to NetGalley.

This story was absolutely amazing and kept me gripped from the first chapter. I couldn't put it down! The characters were so likeable and I was rooting for them the entire book for their own personal success. It really made me feel. Loved it! Will definitely be recommending!

This is debut novel by Dwayne Ulliac, and I think it’s a hit!

If you’ve ever wondered what the term “toxic relationship” means, read this book because Peter and Ruby are the textbook definition of unhealthy. Ulliac gives us a very real look into codependency, control, manipulation, resentment, and how we slowly sacrifice pieces of ourselves to stay in these relationships. Peter’s addiction to alcohol and his rationalizations for staying in a harmful relationship seemed very true-to-life. These things usually occur slowly and quietly; rarely are they glaring from the beginning of any relationship.

This is a great book for readers that enjoy character driven books and their everyday lives. Looking forward to Ulliac’s next book!

This was an interesting character-driven novel that explores toxic relationships and addiction (two things that often go hand in hand).

Peter and Ruby were horrible for each other, but a lot of people in toxic relationships have so much trouble leaving the situation.
I was really rooting for Peter.
I mostly read thrillers and I enjoyed reading something a little different this time, especially because it takes place in Canada.
