The Weight of Sunshine drew me in with its compelling cast and held my attention as their lives unfolded in unexpected ways. I appreciated the way the novel examines the ripple effects of decisions, personal connections, and generational ties without ever feeling forced. The characters are layered and imperfect, making their journeys feel genuine and emotionally resonant. I found myself fully invested in their stories and eager to see where each path would lead. Thoughtfully written and richly developed, this is a novel that lingers in your mind after you've finished it.

I am speechless, I truly don't have much to say. This is one of those novels that rewires your brain, and makes you rethink your relationship with others. Each character is unique and flawed, but yet very nuanced and layered. Maguire did a brilliant job of narrating their journeys through life and how the ripple effect of their decisions. Truth be told: I wasn't entirely convinced after the first chapter, but I am so glad I continued because every perspective gets better as you progress in the novel.

wow wow wow. the weight of sunshine truly entranced me. this is a story about love, about grief, about the weight of ourselves, and about feelings. this book spans five decades, beginning with our primary main characters, Nina and Jax, their afternoon together and the ripple effects that has on the rest of the story. we are taken through Nina and Jax’s lives separately and together. there is a vast array of characters, bringing their own experiences and feelings around our main characters, propelling the story forward. the story progressed quickly, we jump from rags to wealth through New York, Idaho, San Francisco, Napa, and France. the reader learns of grief, heartbreak, wine, friendship, life and death, wealth and its disparity. I honestly flew through this book, I was so enamored with the characters and story. each character was complex, and their introduction added to the overall plot, the bouncing of their POVs like conversations overlapping at a dinner party. I cannot articulate the emotional rollercoaster I went on reading this. I had parts I laughed at, parts I cried at, parts I wanted to just sit and drink wine with the characters at.

This book was a total roller coaster of emotions. I felt sadness, tension, laughter, joy, and tears. I just didn't want it to end!
The writing style is beautiful and high-end. A true masterpiece. The author doesn't just describe a luxury lifestyle—she weaves it right into the story with elegant vocabulary and French words. It actually made me use a dictionary, and I learned a lot while reading. It is so rare to find writing this good.
I especially loved how real the characters felt. Their emotions and struggles were so deep that I felt like I was watching real people right in front of my eyes.
The story covers so many deep themes across generations, but it kept me hooked from the first page to the very last words. This is a stunning book by a highly talented author. I am still under its spell and will be thinking about it for days. Highly recommend to everyone!

This one is hard to categorize. I liked it, kinda, I would recommend it, but with a caveat: you sometimes get lost!

Nina Rhodes Welbourne and Jackson Hart have been "best friends" since their college days in the late 1980s. But they have never "hooked up" because Nina is the kind of girl you might want to end up with, until a chance meeting in Idaho in 2000. They meet by accident: Jackson is currently living nearby and Nina is in town for the funeral of her husband's best friend. Neither of them is in a good place. They have both married for the wrong reasons and those reasons are now overwhelming them. Sitting in a bar eating oysters and talking, Nina maintains that men and women can never be friends "because of sex". Jackson says that is not true, but admits that he has on occasion wanted to have sex with her. In the end, they have sex upstairs at the inn and then, once again, go their separate ways. Later that night, Nina has sex with her husband for the first time in a long time, so when, a few weeks later, she discovers she is pregnant, she figures either man could be the father. Only when her son is born does she discover he is undoubtedly Jackson's son. But she doesn't tell him.

A few years later, Jackson unexpectedly shows up at Nina's husband's funeral, sees his son, and realizes the truth instantly. Still she doesn't tell him, even though it is obvious he knows. Eventually he confronts her and asks to meet his son and have a chance to be included in his life. The two eventually marry and move to a vineyard where Jackson has been living after his wife abandoned him and he lost himself.

The book goes on for a while. There are a LOT of characters, and many of them end up narrating sections of the book. The timeline stretches from 1987 to 2037 and there is a lot of it, but if you stick to it, you will get a good read. It just could have been a little more coherent!

i knew as soon as i began this book that it would break my heart. i knew it would be one of those i would feel pain for simply because of how involved i was. one of those books ive come to almost,almost break my rule and flick through so i can prepare myself for whats coming! this is one of those books the crawl into a nook in your heart and makes a home there.
when done right a book like this that spans the years and years of the characters lives is one of my favourite type to read. and again, only causes you to become far more invested in those you read about. it IS then like you are connected, you know them, they mean something more to you because infact we have seen their loves more fully.
we follow the story and decades of Nina and Jackson. they have been best friends since college. but best friends it has always been. all fine. we see their lives both crossed and apart. until that one moment neither are in a good place and the ground shifts moving them closer. and perhaps too close. is it? they then will go their separate ways once again. will the distance be this long this time? because what we also now know is that one act lead to a whole other person. eeeeesh!
this book is also kind of brilliant because not only do wee see the authors telling of their tale. but we also get the characters in their lives tell of their tale too. i thought this was a really clever and then thought provoking set-up. i really liked how it wasn't too much though, it never overtook to a place where we just seemed to be getting others opinions.
the characters in this book didn't have it easy. and it hit me good and proper. i got emotional with and for them and just needed to know where the next place we'd meet them would be next. how were they in every step became a need. of course there further we get the more we learn and also the more you cant help but think "oh golly how could this possibly end". i really didn't want to have my heart broken people!
the lives and choices in this books are complex and true. they arent always agreeable but this is also what makes them all the more digestible. they effect themselves, each other and also those around them.
the themes met also felt real and naturally threaded through the book. it didn't feel forced or like situations were just done for effect or to include a certain trope. it felt this was indeed the telling of their lives and all that came with that.
a book i wanted more from and couldn't put down.
a book you know you'll never be able to search for the like of in google so when this type comes along it feels even more special.
